Chapter 24:
Soon everyone was dressed and ready. Silently they loaded the vehicles and went to the site where Davina's human life would end.
"Lafayette cemetery." Jeremy mused aloud. "Where the dead stay dead." Davina nodded and once they all left the car, they made their way to the crypt where the sacrifice was going to take place.
Sophie was there and had the knife prepared.
As the Mikaelsons began to approach Sophie a whole coven of witches seemed to appear from behind the various crypts and soon it was vampires on one side and witches on the other. Jeremy had his arm around Davina. The tears running down his cheeks were real and Elena was crying at the sight of her brother in so much pain. Kol had told Elijah in no uncertain terms that while Rebekah was his sister and he would die for her in this instance he was going to be protecting Bonnie. The witches would undoubtedly realize that she was somehow a hybrid and they might try something not to mention Bonnie was the one standing between them and Rebekah's baby.
Elijah and Klaus were protecting Rebekah as well as looking after Elena and Caroline. Stefan stepped forward when it became obvious that Jeremy couldn't let Davina go. He placed his hands on Jeremy's shoulders and restrained the young man. Davina gave him one last long kiss and then continued on to Sophie. Elena left Elijah's side to join Stefan and Jeremy because at this moment it felt like old times. They all knew this feeling because they had been there before. She remembered as she had begged Stefan to close his eyes and she had been spirited away from him. Her heart ached like it was yesterday as she held Jeremy's hand while he watched the woman he loved go to her death.
Sophie held the knife against her throat.
"Do you believe?" Sophie asked and Davina only nodded, her throat too tight to speak but a little whimpering sound escaped.
Sophie took that and closed her eyes before opening them and slitting her throat, allowing her this moment to grieve for what she had done to an innocent.
"Ancestors, please, bring them all back." She shouted while the witches watched but realized that Davina wasn't coming back-nor the other three girls.
Elijah had his eyes closed as did Stefan, Klaus and Kol while Rebekah looked uncertain about these new events.
All in all, she wasn't really all that caring about what happened. To her, humans live and die all the time, this was no different.
"Nooo!" Jeremy cried out but Stefan and Elena held him firm as the life faded from Davina's eyes quickly as her blood spilled. Suddenly little white lights appeared and seemed to go into the witches. Kol looked angry now and Bonnie held him tightly.
"Just remember we've won," she said under her breath where none of the witches would be able to hear.
"The harvest is done sisters," one of the elder witches pronounced. "Let us give thanks that our powers are renewed." The rest of the witches left leaving Sophie crying over Davina's body. Stefan released Jeremy and he ran to Davina's side.
"It will take a while, several hours at least," Klaus said.
"Let's get her home," Elijah said.
"That's some decidedly delicious blood," Rebekah purred and everyone turned to stare at her for her awkward comment. "What? I'm hungry!"
Klaus and Stefan went to her side instantly. Each one was nervous as they stared at her.
"I'll get you some blood back at the house." Stefan promised and Klaus ushered them to go inside the car and wait for the others.
Jeremy was the one who carried Davina back into the car, sitting next to Rebekah and Elena was sitting on the other side and Elijah beside her. Kol and Bonnie got the back.
Klaus was driving as fast as he can and Stefan was in the passenger seat.
Unknown to them, not all the magic went into the witches that attended the ritual. In fact, four little orbs of light made their ways into already deceased witches.
Greta Martin, Jonas Martin, Aja and Sheila Bennett.
Each one with their own mission.
They arrived back at the mansion and Elena brought a cloth to beginning cleaning Davina but Jeremy took it from her.
"Can you just leave me with her. I just want to be alone right now 'Lena," he said. Elena felt a little hurt but left him alone. Klaus and Stefan made sure Rebekah got what she needed and Kol sought out Bonnie who was frowning.
"Bonnie? What's wrong?" he asked.
"It's..." she frowned. "Nevermind it must be nothing."
"What?" he prodded gently.
"I thought I felt my grams...it's just been a while that's all. It was probably just wishful thinking."
"Oh my dear sweet Bonnie." She turned, as did Kol, to see her grams standing there in the flesh. "You really did feel me." Sheila moved over to her and hugged her. "Though there is not much time-the ritual was hijacked and instead of the young girls coming back to life-it was me and three others."
"Who are they?" Bonnie asked. She shook her head.
"This needs to be said with everyone."
Bonnie took a long look at her Grams and wondered what she would think about the changes Bonnie had made in her life. She stood protectively with Kol and for once she realized she was protecting them from each other.
"Everyone, living room please," Kol called. In a flash vampires began to flash in from all parts of the house. Elena and Caroline looked shocked as they saw who was before them. Boldly Kol wrapped his arms around Bonnie and held her close. Bonnie hadn't even told Lucy yet that she had turned for Kol and now her Grams was before her.
"The ritual was hijacked-the girls should have come back...in a way." Sheila started as she looked at Davina's body. "They should have but a witch made it so that they won't come back until you and your family was gone." She added as she saw each Original sibling.
"Who came back and who are the targets?" Klaus asked. He was getting antsy, ready to kill anyone who goes after his family.
"Greta Martin," She saw Klaus pale. "Jonas Martin," this time it was Elijah who paled. "Myself and Aja-a friend of Abby's." Kol and Caroline paled.
"I killed Aja." Caroline whispered. "She's after me." She added.
"Jonas is after me." Elena whispered. "The whole Hybrid ritual bit I believe and he blames me for his son's death." Elijah looked threateningly at the doors and windows, just daring the warlock to try and take Elena from him.
"Greta..." Klaus murmured.
"What can we do to defeat them?" Bonnie worried. She looked around at the concerned faces. She watched as Elijah pulled Elena to him while Stefan wrapped his arms around Rebekah and they placed their hands on her growing belly. Even Klaus wrapped his arms around Caroline though things were still unsettled between them.
"I am going to put a protection spell on the house for starters," Bonnie said. "First we probably need a blood run...once it goes up it will be no one in or out."
"Good idea." Elijah said in agreement. "We need a blood run if we are going to have two new vampires in this house." He added as he looked at Jeremy who nodded.
He was ready. He was willing to do this and stay with his sister forever as well as Davina.
It was that moment that Davina woke up, needing air and blood.
Jeremy tried to hurry to her side but Kol cut him off and Elijah settled next to Davina. He opened his wrist and Davina took a sip. She began crying as the pain shot through her jaw and head. Kol was holding Jeremy back despite the fact that Jeremy was taking swings at him.
"She would do things she would regret to you right now mate," Kol said. "Elijah wouldn't dare hurt her." Elijah gave Davina a moment and then offered her his wrist and she bit him hungrily.
"A new vampire is born," Elena smiled. "Hey Bonnie you're not the newbie anymore." Bonnie glared at her.
"Oh child you think I didn't watch you turn two months ago," Sheila Bennett said. "I've been watching you Bonnie. I know all about you and Kol Mikaelson." Kol wrapped his arm even more protectively around Bonnie bringing her protectively against his chest.
"I chose to turn." She told her grandmother. "I wanted to turn under different circumstances but I don't regret anything."
"I didn't expect you to regret anything." She smiled at her. "This was your choice and I want you to live to your full potential."
"I'm in love with Kol and my life is with him," Bonnie said with a smile.
"Okay who's going to make the run?" Caroline asked worriedly. Time was not on their side and they needed to hurry up and get protected.
"I'll go," Stefan said, "I'm not a Mikaelson and therefore not much of a target." "I'll go with him," Caroline said with determination.
"You're a target though." Bonnie worried. "Aja wants you dead." Elena nodded. Caroline smiled.
"I'll be fine." She said to them. "Don't worry." She added as she left the house with Stefan.
Worry was what they did for two hours straight until they came back in, bloody and with a lot of blood.
"What happened?" Klaus worried as he had her in his arms and then was looking her over a minute later. Rebekah was just as worried about Stefan. Bonnie began chanting them and she had to grab both Kol and Elijah to put the kind of protection on the house that she wanted to. Meanwhile Davina was staring at Jeremy but holding herself rooted to the spot. The last thing she wanted was to hurt him.
Jeremy walked over to her and held her hands in his. He got her to look him in the eye.
"I love you and I don't care what you do to me." She smiled and shook her head.
"I don't want to hurt you." He pulled her into his arms and murmured softly into her hair.
"I don't care. If you want, take as much as you need." She didn't bite him, though it was tempting.
"I'm scared," Davina confided to Jeremy, "I've never felt this...empty...before. Bonnie told me it would happen but I feel lost."
"Don't worry, I'm here," Jeremy tried to soothe her.
"There it's done," Bonnie said but the second she let go of Kol and Elijah her feet wouldn't hold her and she lost consciousness. Kol swept her into his arms but looked incredibly worried.
"You truly love her don't you?" Sheila Bennett marveled as she watched how tenderly Kol treated her granddaughter.
"I do." He looked at the witch that was brought back to life. "I really do love her." Sheila smiled at him.
"Then protect her from those that wish to harm her." Sheila said as she sat on the couch, just enjoying what was going on.
"Elijah I'm ready whenever you are," Jeremy told him boldly. He hadn't left Davina's side though Davina was obviously struggling just to be with him.
"We've got company..." Caroline barely choked out though her mouth seemed to be full of sawdust. The others joined her at the window to see the gathering of witches and warlocks.
"Davina do you feel anything coming back yet?" Kol worried. Bonnie was still unconscious and he wasn't sure if he trusted Sheila Bennett to protect anyone other than her granddaughter.
Davina closed her eyes and then they snapped open.
"Yes." She got out. Closing her eyes she managed to increase the protective wards around the place.
Elijah, meanwhile, looked at Jeremy.
"Are you sure?" he asked, making sure that he was positive about this.
"I am." Jeremy felt the Original's blood go into his mouth and when the wrist pulled away from his mouth, he heard his neck snap.
He was dead...but they weren't sure for how long.
Davina settled with Jeremy grateful that there were no longer any human heartbeats to contend with. Elena was also sitting next to Jeremy her anxiety of the whole situation was trying to overwhelm her. The witches and warlocks were chanting outside and though it took them four hours they were finally able to get through the forcefield after a fashion.
Caroline sauntered over towards Klaus and he smiled at her. He barely had time to catch the flash of the knife and change positions. She got in another strike before Kol was able to pin her down. Bonnie closed her eyes to concentrate harder and Sheila stepped in to help. Recognition came back into Caroline's eyes and she dropped the knife looking to Klaus with absolute horror on her face.
"What's wrong with me?" Caroline asked as she stared at him, still in horror.
"You were being controlled by one of the witches out there." Klaus soothed. She felt horrible and went over to the other side of the room. She wasn't going to hurt anyone else if that happens again.
"Great if they can start controlling us we're in serious trouble," Elena worried. "All they'd need would be Kol. With Bonnie out of the way the protection would fall and they'd be in."
"It will take a lot more than they've got out there to get into an original's mind," Elijah said calmly.
"Do they have the power to carry out their task? Can any one of them kill an original or would it take all three?" Bonnie asked Sheila then. She wasn't sure how long she was going to be able to keep up the level of protection. She was beginning to be in desperate need of blood, powerful blood.
"I'm unsure-I'm not that privy to their plans as the one witch who would have come didn't." Sheila smiled sadly at them. "They wanted Ayana to be here but she sent me instead, as she was on most of the witches side that didn't believe in the extermination of vampires was a good idea."
"Our mother must have had a fit." Kol said bitterly. Sheila nodded.
"A big one." Sheila told him as she added a level of protection, to help out the vampires on the inside and to keep the witches on the outside and without having them do their mind control trick.
All that was left was to see if it worked.
"They're blocked," Kol said as he relaxed a little. They had been trying to get inside his head for a while now but Kol was well practiced in keeping people out. "The problem is how long can we keep this going. Bonnie is going to exhaust herself. I can feel her growing weaker." Kol's worry was obvious and he settled around Bonnie so that she could draw from him to keep up her strength.
"There has to be a way to get rid of them," Klaus growled. "How do we end this?" Caroline had brought Bonnie a blood bag and was enjoying one of her own. Elena brought one to Elijah but he refused it. She growled at him and he finally gave in and drank.
No one knew how to answer his question, as they were all wondering the same thing. Elena looked at them and as she touched the window, the glass shattered and a knife was in her stomach. Elijah raced over to her and as he saw the knife being thrown at him, he caught it and threw it at the main witch-Aja.
She was down and the other witches were barely standing after that. He pulled the knife out of her stomach and he threw that one at a vampire, hitting him in the heart.
With sudden realization, that vampire was Thierry. Marcel's right hand man.
"I think we just declared war," Klaus announced and his eyes shifted amber. He was tired of hiding and he threw the front door open to meet trouble head on. Jonas had turned his attention towards Elijah and Klaus put himself in the line of fire taking a bite out of Jonas and sucking the magic out of him. A moment later his services were no longer required as Elena ripped Jonas' heart from his chest which apparently still worked for ending a warlock - even a back from the dead one.
Elijah didn't have time to act on the fact that seeing Elena do that was quite the turn on. Instead he was at the door to stop Greta.
Elijah didn't waste any time in ending Greta, he just simply beheaded her before she fell to the ground, dead. Elena, when she saw him do that, was immediately turned on.
As soon as the threat was over Kol scooped Bonnie into his arms as she was about to collapse. Meanwhile Elijah pulled Elena into a loving embrace checking to make sure she was okay.
"Are you alright?" Klaus asked Caroline with obvious worry on his features.
She nodded, her eyes sad. "I'm fine."
"I'm not convinced Caroline," he said gently as he held her. He got her a glass of scotch and sat down with her. "Drink this it will help steady your nerves."
She snapped at him. "My nerves are fine!"
He placed the scotch in her hands and compelled her to take a drink of it.
Still glaring at him, she did.
"You're going to be alright love," Klaus tried to soothe her. He was trying to be considerate but she was throwing it back in his face. Elijah frowned. He didn't care for this hardness in either of the girls. Their appeal had always been their beautiful light and compassion. It made him wonder if perhaps Elena was just toying with him. Perhaps he was a means to an end.
Rebekah was watching all of this with a subtle hatred in her eyes. It was no secret that she hated the girls-all three of them-but the way her brothers acted while with them was disgusting.
She wanted to leave that room and go to hers but as she needed help, she sighed.
"Need help?" Elijah asked, wandering over to her. She nodded and he helped her stand up. She smiled and kissed his cheek.
"You deserve better than the doppelbitch brother." She whispered, making sure that Elena could hear.
"Stefan deserves better than you Barbie Klaus." Elena told her in a sugary sweet voice as she ran a hand through Jeremy's hair fondly.
"Ladies," Elijah and Stefan said as they tried playing peacemaker. "I know that you all have some things that need to be buried but just...be nice or something for now, please." Stefan added as he led Rebekah upstairs.
Elena turned to Kol.
"Do you know if the witches are gone? Hybrid helped me kill Jonas, Mr. Noble killed Greta and Aja was killed." She ticked off her fingers. "Tell me-do you think it's safe to go out there?"
Before Kol could say anything, Elijah interrupted them.
"Elena, may I speak to you in my study?" She let out a breath and nodded. Giving Jeremy's forehead one last quick peck, she stood up and followed Elijah into his study where he watched her sit on his desk, her ankles crossed.
"What is it?" She asked.
"Elena I'm worried about you, you and Caroline both," Elijah confessed. "I understand that you have been through some horrible things and I have apologized for my part in them, as has Klaus. I urge you, not for my sake lovely Elena but for your own to discard this coldness that you are letting creep in. Do you not remember the memories that you have seen of my family when we were younger - how loving and innocent we were. It startled you when you first saw them and you could not believe the transformation. Elena I am afraid that you and Caroline may be headed down that same path. Your compassion is beautiful Elena, a gift and I've told you so before. Do not seek to set it aside or one day you may be startled by who you see staring back at you in the mirror. It is a fate I would not want for you," Elijah delivered his words with all the tender concern and love that he felt for the woman before him and hoped that they would be received in kind.
She gave him a startled look. "You think that I tossed my compassion aside?" She asked and at his nod, she simply shook her head. "I haven't-it's just...I learned that I need to figure out who I need to show that side of me to." Hopping off the desk, she gave him a languid kiss and whispered, "I know you too well Elijah." Tears fell. "I loved you and damn it I still do but-" she was cut off when he kissed her back, tenderly and softly.
"There's been no one else but you in my heart Lovely." He told her once they parted, his forehead resting on hers.
"I still have the letter you wrote to me after you kidnapped me. I carry it with me, always and forever." His thumbs wiped away her tears and he just held her in his arms. "Care still has her goodness and her light but because of all the betrayals and the loved ones she had who died, she still has it but you have to work to get her to open up again." She laughed softly. "She's the reason I haven't shut it off but kept it in the middle...but thanks to you, it's been inching up towards being on again." Her eyes bore into his. "Just give me a reason to have it on again otherwise it'll be right in the middle."
He kissed her forehead. "I love you Elena Gilbert-Elena Sommers...I love you and I always will."
"I love you as well Elijah Mikaelson."
Meanwhile Klaus checked outside to make sure they were safe.
"I'll take you back to Marcel now Caroline," he said gently though it pained him to do so. He knew it was what she wanted and above all he wanted her to be happy.
"She will be fine Kol Mikaelson." Sheila told him. She knew that he loved her granddaughter and now, when she sacrifices herself, she'll find her peace.
