Chapter 40:

After lunch things got a little tense as the courtyard cleared. Everyone came out onto the second story walkway while Elijah and Elena stepped into the courtyard. Katherine had been seated in one of the patio chairs but rose at their appearance. Damon was not present. Katherine had assured him she could do this. He was at the door to their suite watching.

"Elijah...Elena thank you for agreeing to see me," Katherine began with a gentle smile.

Elena nodded but Elijah didn't make a move.

"I'm...sorry for what I did to you." Katherine began. "I'm sorry that you lost Isobel, John and Jenna. I'm sorry that I brought Klaus to you and I'm sorry that I pretended to be you while trying to get my plans to fruition."

"I accept your apology." That threw everyone in a loop. "You thought I stole your happiness but the reality is that your father did. "He stole your little girl and forced you to live somewhere you had no idea about." She smiled sadly at her. "I was in that same situation-minus having a daughter and parents who are alive-but I was in that situation."

"You do?" Katherine was completely surprised. She had expected backlash from the young doppelgänger. "How far along are you?"

"I'm twenty weeks," Elena smiled, "you?"

"Twenty-eight" Katherine replied.

"Know what you're having? I'm having a son." Elena had her hand over her bump.

"So am I." Katherine told her warmly.

"Twilight Zone anyone?" Kol got out as he watched this with fascination.

"If it wasn't for the highlight it would be like deja vu; except Katherine's further along," Bonnie said. "I can't believe she's having Damon's baby."

"Well you're having Kol's twins," Caroline giggled. Bonnie grinned and rubbed her baby bump proudly.

"Twins?" Damon yelped. Bonnie nodded at him.

"Kol's twins-a son and a daughter." She said proudly.

Damon fainted. Elijah looked up and cocked his head to the side.

"Damon discovered that Bonnie's having two." Davina explained to him.

He nodded and turned back to Elena and Katherine who now was placing her hands on his fiancée's bump.

"I am sorry for the pain I caused you Elena," Katherine said, "I hurt a lot of people for my own selfish reasons...I should have left you and Stefan alone. At the time I thought you needed to be as miserable as I was."

"Well you were doing a pretty good job but I don't think anyone could be as miserable as you were," Elena said.

"Oh!" Katherine smiled and Elena did as well but the sound had startled Elijah.

"The baby kicked, Elijah," Elena explained.

Elijah moved over and placed his hand next to Katherine's when he felt the baby kick again.

"That is amazing." Elijah said as he stared at the bump in wonder.

"He's my miracle," Katherine smiled and then she looked to Elena, "I think you know exactly what I mean."

"Yes, there's something about finally realizing the perfect man is right before you," Elena said, "and then having his baby is like having all your dreams come true."

"You said it." Katherine said with a bright smile on her face.

Elena sat down and Katherine sat beside her, both smiling at each other and looking close to becoming friends.

"Okay...does anyone else feel like they're hallucinating?" Caroline said.

"I'm just wishing I had bet on this one. The odds would have been so long the payday would be huge," Bonnie said.

Meanwhile Katherine and Elena spoke for a little longer until both ladies began to yawn.

Elijah and Damon went over to their better halves to take them off to bed for nap time.

This was the only time the two men will ever be in the same room.

"Well that went surprisingly well," Bonnie shrugged. She made her way to their sitting room and Kol was right behind her. He kept promising he was going to put her down for a nap but they never got to the sleeping part.

Meanwhile Klaus made sure that Caroline had more of his blood in her system to keep her from being poisoned by their child within her.

Klaus was flipping through books in the library-a place that he'd never truly be in if he could avoid it-when he came across a leather bound book that looked like a diary.

Maybe I can have some dirt on Elijah now he thought with a chuckle. Out of everyone in their family, he was the only one he knew that owned a diary so as he opened it; he was surprised to see that the words on the page were in Rebekah's handwriting.

Each page showed just how much she hated having her brothers dictate who she can and can't be with until the one passage made him wish that he had daggered Rebekah when he had the chance.

I did it. I contacted a witch to help me find Mikael. Out of my brothers-who I adore-Mikael was the only person who knew that I needed my freedom from Nik and he had the key.

The White Oak Stake that he carries on his person.

Though I love Nik, I can't stand his tyranny and his ways any longer. I know that Elijah still believes in him-that he has humanity left, that same faith he has in Kol who we all know lost his-but he is weak willed. He will always believe in the best and in the good of those who aren't so good.

Just look at Katerina Petrova.

I had her tell Mikael where to go and who to hurt-that little wolf he had been with, Lana, will be the first to die.
