Chapter 49

Kol went for the warmer while Stefan and Bonnie delivered the baby to Katherine.

"You can't have long with him I'm afraid. His lungs are a little weak still and he's not holding body heat," Bonnie cautioned and Elijah nodded.

"Once he's in the warmer you can see him whenever." Stefan said softly to them. "I'm not risking my nephew's life like this."

Damon took the newborn who was tightly bundled and okay on warmth for the moment and shared him with Katherine. She cried as she saw her son.

"Thank you, all of you. Welcome to the world Christopher Stefan."

Klaus grinned. He did something good for a great cause. That little darkness in his heart began dwindling till it was nothing but a spot.

"I'm back!" Kol raced in lugging the warmer unit. It took several of the men to get it hooked up.

"Okay, let's have him," Stefan said gently. He collected his nephew from the reluctant parents and then they settled him into the warmer and Bonnie hooked the oxygen to his little nose with the suture tape to hold it in place.

"Okay who wants first watch?" Elijah asked.

"I do." Damon said. "He's my son and I want to be the one watching him."

"I'll take the second watch," Stefan said.

"I volunteer for the watch after that," Kol said.

"So do I," Elijah said.

Elena smiled at them.

"I'll watch after the boys." She said teasingly to her husband.

"Thank you," Damon smiled truly touched by such support.

"Katerina you don't get up and walk for twenty four hours okay?" Elijah instructed. "If you have to go anywhere Damon carries you." He stared at her for a long moment. "You came close Katerina...too close."

Congratulating the new couple everyone else began to leave the suite. It was mid-morning now and the rain was pouring down in sheets.

"I'm hungry," Bonnie said to Kol, "and this rain has given me the idea to just be lazy in our suite all day."

"Oh doesn't that sound great!" Caroline agreed.

"I just want to go back to sleep." Elena murmured and Elijah kissed her deeply.

"Let's get you back to bed my angel." He whispered as he swept her up in his arms.

As soon as Bonnie got food in her she fell back asleep against Kol. It had been a rough but rewarding morning.

Damon Salvatore stared into the little box that was helping keep his son alive and watched as the baby opened his eyes and began to move his little legs.

There was a no more beautiful sight as his eyes met his son's for the first time.

"Is he okay?" Katherine worried from her position on the bed. She was healing but she still felt sore and weak.

"He's doing well Kat." He told her with a smile on his face.

True to his word about the time sleepiness was catching up to Damon, Stefan came to relieve him. He sat for two hours and by the time Katherine woke again Kol was in the room. He had the lid to the warmer open and was seated next to it with Christopher in his arms giving him a very small bottle. The wee infant seemed satisfied with his care as one hand was wrapped around Kol's pinkie finger. Kol was smiling down at him as he fed.

"Thank you for doing all of this Kol." Katherine said to him with sincerity bleeding from her voice.

"I am glad that you have found your happiness Katherine and I'm glad that I no longer have to hunt you. This little man here seems to be doing just fine for his Uncle Kol. In case you're wondering where Damon is I sent him out for supplies. This cloth diaper is going to be a nightmare in about a half hour. I have half a mind to make sure Elijah has him by then." Kol smirked. He lifted the six pound bundle to his shoulder and rubbed the back until he got a burp and some spit up.

"I knew you didn't need that last half an ounce little man," Kol cooed to the infant.

"You really are ready for one of your own," Katherine marveled, "when I first saw all of this I thought you were crazy."

Kol glanced at her with a raised eyebrow.

"You still don't believe that I'm crazy?"

"Nope, sorry but I won't let the secret outside the family," Katherine said. About that time Kol felt the baby shiver.

"Okay little man, I hear you. Back in the warmer with you," Kol said as he gently laid the infant in the warmer.

"How are you holding up?" Kol asked her, curious about how she was actually doing. The birth really did something to her and he couldn't help himself as he imagined Bonnie, Elena and Caroline in Katherine's place-in so much pain from the delivery.

"I feel much better now. I think Elijah is just being a little overly cautious. Most births aren't like that in case you're worried," Katherine replied.

"Though considering what happened during your first one," Kol said softly to her. "We all need to worry and be cautious."

He nodded his head.

"I'll be delivering my twins." He said. "I believe that I can do it."

"That will be a comfort to Bonnie," Katherine replied.

"I hope." He got out when Damon came back with the things Kol sent him to get.

"Do you know how many different types and sixes of these things there are!" Damon yelped.

"I told you how much the baby weighs," Kol sighed.

"Yes but I only remembered that after the panic set in," Damon explained. Kol laughed. "Well look you got the right size. Elijah you're just in time." On cue Christopher started to wail the dirty cry. It had been a thousand years but Elijah still remembered what the different cries sounded like.

"You're responsibility Damon." Elijah told the raven haired vampire. "You can do this."

Damon sucked in a breath and under the watchful eyes of two Originals and Katherine, Damon changed Christopher's dirty diaper.

"OMG how does something that little make something that smells THAT bad!" Damon yelped. For all their prowess though it took all four of them to figure out how to work the diaper genie Rebekah had given her at their family baby shower.

When they had finally figured it out, Elena was awake and walked into the room, wanting to see Christopher.

"Do I even want to know why you're all so happy?" She asked as she smiled at the baby.

"Nope"

"No"

"Nothing to see here," Damon said.

"Absolutely no reason at all," Kol said. They weren't confessing that one on pain of death.

"How is my bird?" Kol asked eagerly.

"Chirping up a storm and trying to escape his new little cage." She teased. "His most daring escape was when I went to fill the food dish, he darted right out of the cage but ended up in the little one you placed in front of the big cage."

"As soon as we determine the sex I'm going to get it a mate and move them to the large cage I ordered for our sitting room," Kol explained.

"When it gets past the age of six months, the cere above the beak will change color." Elena told him warmly. "Though Kol, that bird is you."

"Not if it's a girl it's not!" Kol objected. "So you think it's a male huh?"

She nodded.

"Considering that the bird is a daredevil, it's so you."

"Well mates are excessively good for vampires so I'm sure they're good for parakeets as well," Kol smiled. "So I'll have to try and find one as beautiful and talented as Bonnie to tempt him."

"One thing that I can give you advice on when it comes to parakeets-after you have had them for a year, then mate them." Elena said as she placed a hand on her bump. Instinctively, she grabbed Elijah's hand and placed it on her bump, when the baby kicked.

"I think there's enough mating going on around here," Damon groaned good-naturedly. Bonnie appeared about that time. She smiled at Kol and kissed him as she made her way over to him. Even though she and Elena were due at the same time Bonnie was definitely bigger.

"Hello Darling..." Kol grinned.

"I love you," Bonnie leaned in to kiss him as much as she could. His hands immediately went to her baby bump. The babies kicked in response. "Don't rile them up. They're already making me black and blue..."

"Does it hurt you that much?" Kol asked nervously.

"Not that much Kol." She reassured him. Elijah looked worriedly at Elena and she smiled at him in the same manner as Bonnie smiled at Kol-lovingly and affectionately.

"It's not nearly as bad for me like it is for Bonnie." She told him with a kiss to his lips.

"I'm fine darling I promise. I'm a vampire remember?" Bonnie smiled. "You made me and you're stuck with me."

"I'm still allowed to worry about you bunny." Kol replied evenly.

Bonnie smiled, "I love you darling. How's little Christopher doing?"

"I fed him earlier," Kol grinned.

"I changed the diaper," Damon frowned.

"If your enemies could see you now," Katerina laughed. Elena giggled at the thought of their enemies seeing how domestic the Originals and Damon are.

"That would be an awesome sight." Elena told them smiling.

"I've still got it," Kol growled. "I could terrify every one of you in this room."

Bonnie grinned at him before grabbing his hands and placing them on her bump. The two kicked again and the psychotic original brother smiled at her.

"Yes that smile is terrifying." Elena laughed and Elijah kissed her.

"Try to hurt her and see how terrifying he can be then," Katherine said. "I have seen Kol in defense of something he values. It never ends well for the other party."
