Lindsey blinked awake in the unfamiliar bedroom, scrubbing at her eyes. She barely remembered the trip back to Goku and Chichi's house last night, she was so tired. She'd dozed off and on during the car ride, not even Goten's chattering and questions could keep her awake. And when they got to the house, she could barely manage to follow Chichi up the stairs to her room.
But now, the smell of food wafting into her room made her stomach growl. "Ughhhh," she groaned, wanting to get something for breakfast, but not wanting to get out of bed yet either. She stretched and finally pushed herself up, blinking to try and wake herself up better. She didn't bother to get dressed yet and found her way down the stairs and to the kitchen. "Morning," she said as she sat down at the table, smiling when Chichi placed a plate in front of her.
"Sleep well?" Chichi asked, biting her tongue when she saw the young woman hadn't even bothered to get properly dressed. She silently reminded herself that the girl was foreign, maybe she didn't know proper etiquette. Chichi would have to teach her.
"Mmhmm," Lindsey nodded as she bit into a piece of toast. It was only when she reached for a glass of juice that she noticed Gohan sitting across the table from her. "Oh! Um… hi," she said with a slightly embarrassed laugh. She was sure she looked like a hot mess in her slouchy pajama pants and tank top, her hair unbrushed. "I'm making a great first impression, aren't I?"
Gohan chuckled at the surprised look on her sleepy face. "Considering you had a sixteen hour flight and got in late last night, I think you are okay. Just this once though," he said, studying her. He was surprised to find that Lindsey was a woman; yesterday, his mother swore up and down that the exchange student would be just like him. There must have been one heck of a mix up. "Did you sleep well?"
"I think I could have slept just about anywhere last night," she said. This was weird. Sitting at a breakfast table with a family, with parents, eating a healthy breakfast was something she wasn't used to. She wasn't sure how to feel about it and shifted a little nervously in her chair. She had to tear her gaze away from Gohan, fearing if she stared at him too long she'd make him uncomfortable. But oh, he was fun to look at. That black hair, his warm eyes, and handsome face. Not to mention the muscles she could see. Goddess, help her. "Heh. I almost forgot what a healthy breakfast is," she said. "Gramma fed us cake for breakfast all summer long."
"Cake for breakfast?" Gohan questioned, his eyes darting over to his mother. She would NEVER in a million years, serve cake for breakfast.
Lindsey nodded as she ate some of the eggs on her plate. "Chocolate usually," she answered. "I mean, sometimes she'd make other flavors. Or she'd make muffins! I guess that's not much of a difference." She paused and looked up, seeing the looks they gave her. Chichi looked almost outraged at the thought of cake for breakfast. "That's… not normal, is it? That's not normal. We're not normal," Lindsey muttered quickly and looked back down at her plate again.
Gohan couldn't bite back the bark of laughter and ducked his head in apology to his mom. "Well, you will fit right in around here. Not normal is our normal." He looked over to his mom, "You said Dad used his instant transmission last night?"
Chichi narrowed her eyes across the table at her husband. "Yes he did. After I repeatedly asked him not to." She was still rather sour about that. She huffed and shook her head as she took a dainty bite of her breakfast. "No one ever listens to me," she muttered. "And sorry to disappoint, dear, but I won't be serving cake for breakfast."
"That's okay," Lindsey said. "It goes straight to my hips anyway. Gramma acts like that's a good thing." She rolled her eyes. "What's instant transmission?" she asked as she finished her breakfast. "I must've missed a lot when I fell asleep in the chair, cause one minute Sabriena was there and the next I wake up and she's gone and it's time to leave!"
"Cat's out of the bag, Mom, she's going to notice everyone flying around soon anyway." Gohan could see the stiffness in his mother's shoulders, the little sigh of irritation. He gave Lindsey a smile. "Instant transmission is a technique Dad learned when he was traveling back home from the planet Namek. Though, that was years ago. He can travel anywhere, instantly, just by visualizing the destination and then manipulating his energy."
"Right," Lindsey said, unsure of what the hell to think. It made her head spin, trying to understand what Gohan was saying. Although manipulating energy was something she was familiar with. She'd learned a great deal of that through working with Gramma casting spells. "Well, I think I'd better unpack and get dressed for the day," she said as she pushed away from the table. She met Gohan's eyes again, his smile making her heart flutter. She returned the smile and tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear. She really wanted to talk with him some more. "What are your plans for the day?" she asked, feeling a little bold. She wasn't nearly as good at this flirting thing as Sabriena was.
Gohan stretched as he finished his plate, raising his hands over his head until his back popped. "Normally, classes and school work, but I am all caught up for the next month, so I'm thinking it is going to be a training day. There's a tournament coming up soon, I know Dad's been excited for it. You could come watch us if you want. Might give you a better idea about us. Or more questions."
"Gohan, your classes start next week. Shouldn't you be studying?" Chichi said. It took everything she had not to roll her eyes. Everything was training this, and fighting that. Goku had eaten his breakfast even faster than normal and rushed out the door to train before Chichi had even managed to serve Gohan and Goten their breakfast. She looked to Lindsey. "Gohan's studying to become a doctor!"
Lindsey wasn't paying attention to Chichi. "I'd love to come watch you," she said. "Just let me get my stuff sorted and I'll meet you outside." She gave him another smile, then turned and hurried off upstairs, a happy little fluttery feeling in her stomach.
She sorted her belongings in record time, putting her clothes in the dresser or the closet, tossing her laptop on the desk. She hated to hide away her altar and ritual tools, her spell books, but she thought displaying them out in the open might be a bit much until her host family got to know her. So she set all the supplies in the floor of her closet, mostly hidden by the other belongings she had there, and had to call it good for the time being.
She dressed quickly and yanked a brush through her hair, then headed outside, hearing loud shouts from the backyard. The bright sunlight seared her eyes and she raised an arm to block it. She looked around for the source of the yelling and let out a strangled scream as her eyes finally recognized Goku's and Gohan's forms. They seemed to be fighting and they were suspended in midair. How was that possible? This must've been some sort of weird dream. They were flying! Was this what Gohan was talking about at breakfast?
Goku laughed and ducked a high kick that Gohan had aimed for his head, countering with some quick jabs of his own. His fists were a blur in the air. "You're gonna have to be faster than that, son!" he laughed, "Unless you think you can beat Trunks in that martial arts competition." He flew backwards, avoiding a nasty right hook. "You know how Vegeta is; he will train his son into the ground if he thinks he can win and won't hold back. That's when you strike!" He powered up, firing a small energy blast at Gohan, and he grinned as it missed. His son was getting faster and faster each day. He wished that he could convince Chichi to let him pursue fighting as his calling, but she'd merely waved him off and said that studying was more important.
Lindsey pinched her own arm as hard as she could and gave a little squeak when it hurt. Okay, so she wasn't dreaming. But then how was this possible? She took a couple cautious steps forward, looking around for wires or something, but there was nothing except clear open sky. She shook her head violently, her eyes squeezed shut before she looked again. This didn't make any sense. She had to know how they were doing it or she would go insane. There had to be a trick to it, some logical explanation. "Hey!" she called loudly, "What are you doing? How are you doing that?!"
Goku, distracted by her voice, paused for a moment and blinked down at her innocently. "Doing what?" he asked before Gohan's fist connected with his cheek and the force of the hit sent him flying into the dirt, leaving behind a destroyed piece of earth. "Oh wow! Gohan! You've been practicing behind your mother's back, haven't you?"
Gohan grinned widely and lowered himself to the ground. "Maybe," he chuckled as Lindsey came running.
"Oh my gosh! Are you hurt?" she cried, but Goku merely got to his feet and brushed the dirt off. She took a step back, shaking her head in disbelief. "You… you were flying!" she gasped. "How did you do that?" She grabbed Gohan and turned him around, looking him over for some sort of wires or something that would give away the secret, but she found nothing. "I don't understand. That's impossible! People don't fly!"
Goku chuckled, "Well, most normal people haven't figured out how to manipulate their energy. So they can't fly." He lifted off the ground again, rubbing at his face. "Come on Gohan, we're just getting warmed up!"
Gohan shook his head and laughed, keeping his feet firmly on the ground. "Ah, Dad? She doesn't know what's going on. I think we need to explain a little bit." He looked back at her and smiled, "Sorry. My dad is used to everyone understanding how it works. To put it in simple terms, we are manipulating energy that's part of our body to push us up off the ground. As if the earth were a magnet and our energy is a polar opposite."
Manipulating energy. That sounded very familiar. Once again, Lindsey thought of her grandmother often speaking about energy and how to use it to bring about change, how to use it in spellwork. "So, it's magick, right?" she asked. "I've never seen magick used like that before, though." She tipped her head as she looked at Goku still hovering in the air.
Goku lowered himself down and stood next to Gohan, blinking at her. "Magick? What's magick? Oh! You mean like when those guys on TV that make things disappear? I love those shows!"
Lindsey shook her head at Goku. "That kind of magic is different. That's just illusions. I was thinking of something different," she said.
Gohan rubbed at his face and pinched the bridge of his nose, but there was an amused smile on his face and he looked at Lindsey. "Well, as far as I know, they are two different things." He held a hand to his chin as he thought about how to explain it so someone who wasn't familiar with the topic would be able to follow. "This is more like our energy. You know, or ah, what do they call it? Chi? It's our own energy that we can channel in times of need. The power comes from ourselves, you can easily get winded by using up too much."
She figured it might be best not to mention the kind of magick her grandmother did, how they were taught to use energy. Most people looked at her funny when she told them her gramma was a witch. She'd stopped telling people a long time ago. She turned her attention to Gohan. "So, can anyone do it?" she asked curiously. "This is all a little weird."
Gohan smiled and laughed, "Well, yeah of course anyone can do it, but most people lack the focus or drive to keep at it long enough to show any results."
Goku grinned. "We're training for a tournament, martial arts in two months. You should enter and we will teach you how to fly. No parachute needed!"
Lindsey frowned. Focus and drive were two things she seriously lacked. "Eh, I dunno," she said hesitantly. "I'm usually not very good at, you know, finishing what I start. I get distracted easily." She gave a little laugh at the thought of being in a martial arts tournament. "I don't know anything about fighting. Well, not that type of fighting. I think the closest I've ever come to a fight is when I punched one of my brothers for cutting off my Barbie doll's hair when we were little. I'd probably just end up embarrassing myself."
She chewed her lip for a moment and studied Gohan. Good gods, he was handsome. She couldn't help but let her eyes roam over him, drinking in the lightly tanned skin over the rounded muscles of his arms. The low-cut V of his neckline revealed powerful muscles of his chest and it was all too easy to imagine what the rest of him looked like beneath the dark blue gi he wore. She felt a slight blush touch her nose and she forced herself to look away. She certainly wouldn't mind spending more time with him. "Ah, hell, why not?" she laughed. "As long as you all think you have the patience to work with me. I'll try!"
Goku smiled brightly. "That's the spirit!" He beckoned her over to where he was standing, positioning her in front of his son. He chuckled at their deer caught in the headlights looks. "Let me show you some of the basics and then we can get to the real fun stuff."
Lindsey blinked as she was suddenly face to face with Gohan. Why was her heart racing all of the sudden? "Ah, o-okay," she said and tried not to smile too much when her eyes met his warm black ones. There was a wisdom and a kindness there that she had never seen before and his gaze made her stomach flip pleasantly. She ripped her attention away from him for a moment and listened as Goku told her how to stand and hold her arms. She looked back up at Gohan and gave him another little smile. "Don't hurt me, now. I cry easy."
Gohan chuckled, "I'll try to slow it down for you." He admired her for a moment. The way the sunlight caught her hair made it look as if it had caught fire. He watched as his dad guided her through a basic block and a punch, guiding her hand and body, showing her how to put her full momentum behind her attack.
Goku looked up at his son, seeing the way he was looking at the girl and he grinned before he stepped back, his attention on Lindsey again. "Okay, try that a few times on your own. Let me see your stance."
"Okay," Lindsey said and licked her lips. She drew a deep breath before she swung a punch at Gohan just the way Goku showed her. He easily avoided her attack and she snapped her arm back to her side and tried again. She growled in frustration as he blocked the next punch and she swung hard again but lost her balance and fell forward, wrapping her arms around his waist to keep herself from hitting the ground. "Oh my god! I'm so clumsy!" she laughed embarrassedly.
Gohan felt his face heat up again, a hot blush spreading across his cheeks as he steadied her on her feet. He gently grasped her arms, not quite pulling, not quite pushing her away. "Easy there," he said softly, smiling down at her, letting his hands linger on her arms for an extra second or two, "Clumsy in this house is not something to be worried about."
Goku laughed, "If that's what you call clumsy, wanna trade? I end up breaking china plates and furniture!" He helped her get back into her stance. "And relax, this is your first day!" He grinned at her. "It takes years of practice and mental focus to do what we do, but it's worth it," he said before he looked over at Gohan who looked as if he were reliving a distant memory.
"Maybe learning to fly wouldn't be such a good idea for me," Lindsey laughed. "I'll just end up crashing." She rubbed at her face, trying to will away the hot blush there. She wondered if she could do that again on purpose, just to feel his body in her arms again. It made her heart skip and her breath catch, but the damn blush on her face was sure to give her away. "Okay, okay," she said, shaking her arms loosely for a moment before she resumed the fighting stance Goku had shown her. "Try again. I can do this."
Goku smiled widely as he watched Lindsey and Gohan go at it again. She was nowhere near their level, how could she be? She had just started. But, there was something about her, Goku mused, that just struck him as a wild, passionate creature who would enjoy this.
Gohan slowed down, letting Lindsey get used to throwing punches and blocking. "You know, martial arts is really more of a dance. You face off against your opponent and you don't just use one technique over and over again. You learn to adapt to your body and trust in what it's trying to tell you."
Lindsey's eyes brightened at that. "Dance?" she asked excitedly. "Now that I can do!" She focused a bit more on his movements, trying not to let herself get too distracted by the way his muscles moved beneath his tanned skin as she moved to block a punch he aimed at her. She watched as he stepped to the side and she moved in turn, keeping the same amount of space between them before she kicked out at his leg, falling into a sort of rhythm with him. This was fun. She felt herself smiling again as she thought over his words about trusting her body and listening to it.
Gohan grinned widely as she found her own pace, her movements no longer blocky and stiff but fluid and graceful. True, she was still slow, but speed came over time after the movements became so ingrained into her body they would feel like second nature to her. Slowly, he stopped thinking about the fight and more of the dance that they were doing together and he lost himself in the moment.
Lindsey kept at it, taking direction and encouragement from them when they gave it, until she was sweaty and out of breath. "I think I need a break," she panted, leaning her hands on her knees. She glanced up at Gohan and realized he hadn't even broken a sweat yet. She wiped at the sweat on her forehead and pulled a face, "And maybe a shower." She groaned as she sat back in the grass and grinned up at him again. "So how long until I can fly?" she asked in a joking tone. She had the serious impression that it was going to take a long time to learn something like that.
Gohan laughed, taking advantage of her position to sneak a peek at her ample cleavage. Her face had gone rather pink from her exertions, making the freckles there stand out even more. Acting on pure impulse, he went over to her and wrapped his arms around her carefully. "Not long at all," he answered before he jumped up into the air and took off. He had to get fast enough for what he had in mind to work. He grinned down at her, the wind blowing their hair back, "Do you trust me?"
Lindsey gave a startled cry as he lifted her so suddenly, so easily, and she looked down at the ground far below them. It looked like a blur at the speed they were traveling. "Oh gods, what are you going to do?" she squeaked. She closed her eyes tightly for a moment, somehow knowing that he wouldn't let her get hurt, before she looked at him again. "Yes."
Gohan laughed and made sure he had a hold of one of her hands. "Spread your arm out!" He waited until she did and then carefully loosened his grip on her, except for their hands. He held her out to his side, the cushion of the air keeping her afloat next to him and they flew, side by side.
Lindsey's eyes went wide and she gave an excited scream. She'd never experienced anything like this before in her life. It was crazy, it was wonderful. Talk about an adrenaline rush. The wind whipped through her hair and rushed loudly in her ears as she screamed and laughed again. "Oh my god! This is AWESOME!" she cried turning her face to look at him. She squeezed his hand a little tighter, praying to the Goddess that she didn't lose her grip on him. This was incredible.
Gohan felt his stomach do a flip as her fingers tightened around his hand, her excited cries filling the air along with the wind. He had never taken anyone flying like this before and the people he hung around who could fly thought it was old news and nothing to get excited about. It was refreshing to have a clean slate to work with. "Just wait until you can do it on your own, it's amazing!"
Her smile brightened even more, if that were possible. "Oh, I am definitely going to learn now! I hope you don't get tired of me, cause I'm gonna be bugging you about this every chance I get!" she teased. She was going to dream about this, she just knew it. The feeling of being absolutely weightless, the wind blowing in her hair, but mostly about the feeling of his strong hand in hers. This was something she would never get tired of and she couldn't wait to learn how to do it on her own.
Gohan pulled her back into his arms before he slowed them to a stop in the middle of the air, holding her curvaceous figure against his body. He paused to look down at the ground, miles below. He had almost forgotten how exhilarating flying could be. "I guess now would be a bad time to ask if you are afraid of heights?"
She laughed. "If I was before, I'm not anymore!" She had to stop herself from sighing at the feeling of his strong, muscular arms around her. He smelled amazing and already she could tell how sweet and kind he was. So much different than what she was used to. She gave a little giggle, "You know, you really should ask a girl that BEFORE you sweep her off her feet."
He chuckled and flew them back to his house before he carefully lowered them to the ground. "Ah well. Where's the fun in that? Better to surprise them and get smacked later. Let them enjoy the moment. I think. If it really was a problem, I'm sure you would let me know."
She raised an eyebrow at him as her feet touched the ground again. She was shaking from the adrenaline coursing through her system. "So you do that with all the girls, huh?" she teased. "How many of them actually have smacked you?"
Gohan smiled and trailed his fingertips down her back, feeling her trembling beneath his touch. "None. You were the first one I've actually wanted to take flying before. Plus, you didn't bully me into it, so I think that makes it special. Don't you?" He laughed and rubbed the back of his neck, "Wow! That sounded corny, you'll have to bear with me. I'm a bit rusty. Haven't had much time for, you know, relationships while studying."
She arched her eyebrow even higher at him. "Relationship? You're gettin' ahead of yourself, boy," she said with a little smirk. She pointedly looked him up and down once, fighting the shiver that tried to run down her spine. "I haven't even known you a full twenty-four hours yet."
Gohan laughed, "Well, it's like my dad says, live for the moment!"
"Since when do I say that?" Goku asked from his reclined position on the ground, his head propped up with one hand as he stretched out, watching them with a smile on his face. "Have fun?"
His son startled and let go of Lindsey and took a step back from her, a deep red blush growing across his cheeks, "DAD!"
Lindsey jumped at the sound of Goku's voice as well, but grinned brightly at him. "YES!" she cried. "That was the most awesome thing, like, EVER." She clasped her hands together and begged, "You guys HAVE to teach me how to do that. Please?" She turned to Gohan and batted her eyes at him. "Pretty please?!"
Gohan smiled at her and nodded. "Of course we will! It takes a while though!"
Goku sat up and slapped his knees. "Well then, I guess we'd better get started."
Lindsey smiled and gave Gohan a wink. "Oh don't worry. You're not getting rid of me any time soon. I'm not going anywhere."
