"Lindsey, can you call Judge Banks and let him know that the files are being sent to him as he we speak?" Mercedes said as she walked towards her office.
"Yes ma'am." Lindsey said, picking up the phone.
"Thank you." She called out. Just as she was about to close her door when a foot stop it. She looked up and saw her boss with a blank expression on her face.
"My office. Now." She turned around on her heels and walked away.
Mercedes looked at her confusedly but followed her. She looked at Lindsey, who was just as confused as she was. When she got into the office, she closed the door behind her, "What's wrong?"
Laura looked at her, "Have a seat."
Mercedes sat down in front of her desk trying to figure out what was going on.
"You know for a lawyer, your boyfriend is pretty dumb."
"Excuse me?" Mercedes asked as she looked at her.
Laura held her hand up, "Before you jump down my throat, listen to this." She pressed the button on the phone and stared at her.
Stop sending your family around to try to see her because that's not happening either. And if you do get out of jail and you try to come for her, I will fucking kill you myself.
Mercedes sat there in shock for various of reasons. First, Sam didn't tell her that bitch was contacting him. Secondly, he knew that phone calls were always recorded. Third, why didn't he tell her?
"Mercedes look..I know the ordeal that happened between him and his baby mama but he can't go around threatening people." She folded her arms across her chest, "I'm sorry to do this to you but you have to prosecute him."
"The hell I am Laura." She frowned at her, "He's my boyfriend."
"Exactly. Boyfriend. Not your husband, so you can't vouch out because of spousal privilege."
"He hasn't been arrested so there's no need for that."
"Not yet. He hasn't been arrested yet because it hasn't came out yet. An inside source sent this to me for us to get the case and I'm going to need you on this."
"Do you even hear yourself right now? I'm not doing it. What Sam did was very stupid but I'm not going to help put my boyfriend away for a threat that might not even mean anything."
"How do you know it doesn't mean anything? I mean do really know who you're sleeping with at night, Mercedes?"
Mercedes wanted to slap the piss out of her when she said that. She was way out of line, She stood up and swung the door open, stalking out of the office.
"You don't do this Mercedes and you're fired." She yelled out, causing the whole office to get quiet.
Mercedes turned around with an anger stricken face, "Fired me then Laura. And when you do, prepare to have a fucking lawsuit on your hands." She walked into her office to grab her stuff and head over to Sam's office.
Sam was getting ready to go to lunch when he heard the commotion coming from outside his door. He jumped when his door swung opening, showing his very pissed off looking girlfriend.
"I'm sorry Mr. Evans, I tried to stop her." His assistant said as he looked at Mercedes with a frown.
Mercedes glared at the young assistant, "Problem?"
"It's okay, Jake." He quickly reassured the young boy, trying to save him from the wrath of Mercedes Renee Jones. He grabbed him by the shoulders and gently pushed him out, closing the door behind him as he turned back to his girlfriend, "What's wrong?"
"Oh nothing. Just the usual at work." She walked over to him with a frown plastered on her face, placing her hand on his shoulder, "My boss is telling me that she wants me to prosecute this new case that we are getting. Mhm, the one were my boyfriend threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend over the phone." With each word, her grip became stronger against his shoulder, pressing down hard.
Sam winced as she pressed down on his shoulder, "Ouch, baby." He looked at her sighing, "It was in the heat in the moment. She was pissing me off Mercedes and it just slip."
Mercedes pushed his shoulder, "Dammit Sam. You cannot threaten to kill somebody when the call is being recorded."
"I wasn't thinking. Dammit, I wasn't thinking at all to be honest. She said she was going to take my daughter back away from me Cedes." Sam said as he sat down on the couch, rubbing his sore shoulder.
Mercedes ran her hand through her hair as she walked over to him, sitting down in front of him, "Sam, there is no way she can get her back. None. There are other ways to make sure she doesn't, but threatening her Sam...that's just a no no." She grabbed his hands, intertwining their fingers together.
Sam sighed as he looked away from her, "I screwed up and there's a possibility that I may get in trouble for this."
"I'm not going to let you get in trouble for this." She stood up from the ottoman, "It's not out but Laura somehow got that recording from an inside source. We just need to find out who that is. Plus, it's not like that bitch didn't say anything to you." She paced back and forth for a couple of minutes before she came up with an idea, "I'm going to Miami."
"What?" Sam looked at her in shock, "Mercedes no."
"Why not? I just need to schedule an appointment with the warden and start from there." She waited for him to give her an answer but opened her mouth, "I'll take care of it. I just need you to watch Maverick for me."
He let out a defeated breath, "You take care of me too much."
Mercedes smiled at him, "You would do the same." She leaned down and kissed him before walking out the room.
"So..mom went out of town?" Maverick asked as he sat on the couch in Sam's house.
"Yeah." Sam answered absently as he stared at his daughter. He has been doing that every since that phone call with Nicole. The thought of her being taking away from again was running through his mind. He knew that it wouldn't happen but the thought of it scared him.
"When is she coming back?" Madison asked as she sat by Maverick.
"Don't know."
The kids looked at each other before they turned back to Sam, "You don't know?"
Sam couldn't tell them when she would be back because he didn't know himself and he definitely wasn't going to tell them what she was gone for either, "No I don't y'all."
Maverick scanned his face, "You're not telling us something."
Sam stood up from the couch, grabbing his keys from the table, "How about we go out for dinner?"
"Daddy, you told me it's not nice to lie." Madison folded her arms as she stood up, staring intently at him.
Sam sighed as he looked her, "You're right. Mama is gone on a work related trip to Miami. Now, can we go because I'm starving." Sam said as headed to the front door.
Maverick looked at Madison, "Come on." He opened his arms for her to jump.
Madison giggled as she jumped in his arms, wrapping her own around his neck.
Mercedes tipped the cab driver as he dropped her off in front of the prison. She took a deep breath as she walked up to the gate, nodding at one of the guards when he opened the gate for her. When she entered the building, she was patted down by a very eager rookie. She signed the sign in the book, taking the pass that the guard gave her and sat down.
Mitchell was walking through the building as he was coming back to lunch when he spotted a familiar face. He squinted his eyes to make sure it was her before he approached her, "Mercedes Jones?"
Mercedes turned when she heard her name, she smiled when she saw him, "Mitchell Rivera." She stood up from her seat and hugged him, "How are you?"
"I'm good and you?"
"Good." She smiled at him. Mitchell was a good friend of hers from law school. She hasn't seen him in years.
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm actually here to see the warden. I have a meeting with him at one."
Mitchell smiled slightly, "You're talking to him."
Mercedes eyes bugged out, "Seriously? I thought you were.."
"I was." He smiled at her, "Last minute changes." He moved aside, "How about we head to my office?"
"Okay." Mercedes grabbed her things from the chair and followed behind him.
He opened his door and let her go in first, "How is your son?"
"He's wonderful. He will be a senior after this school year." Mercedes said as she sat down in the chair.
"Wow..times sure does fly by." He sat in his chair, folding his hands in front of him, "So, what can I do for you Ms. Jones?"
"I need your help with something." She opened the file up and slid it to him, "You have inmate in here, Allison Parks. Bank robbery and aggravated assault a couple of years ago."
Mitchell read the file nodding, "Yeah, I know her. She's a bit on the crazy side. Are you taking her on as a client?"
"Hell no." Mercedes said quickly, ignoring the look he was giving her, "She is apart of the reason I'm here though." She shook her head as she began to tell him the whole story. Seeing the reaction on his face, "That's why I'm here because I need to see if there is anyway I can make sure that a recording of that phone call does not get released."
"Hold on." Mitchell was trying to take everything she was saying in, "She was abusing her own daughter?"
Mercedes nodded sadly, "Yeah."
"Hell, I would threaten to kill her too if she would say something like that." He said angrily, "What do you want me to do?"
"Is there anyway you can get rid of the recording all together? I know I'm asking for a lot and breaking all kinds of laws but.."
He waved her off, "No..it's okay." He picked up his phone and called for a guard to bring an inmate in. Hanging up the phone, "It's always useful to have an inmate with system hacking skills."
Mercedes laughed softly, "That's true." She sat back in her seat and waited.
Sam wiped his mouth carefully as he looked at Maverick texting furiously on his phone. He looked at Madison who looked at him curiously.
"Boyfriend problems." She whispered.
"How do you know?" He asked his daughter in a hush whisper.
Madison just shrugged, "I'm smart daddy." She giggled as she returned to her burger.
Sam laughed lowly at his daughter. She was too grown for her own good. He looked over at Maverick, "You okay?"
Maverick looked at him with a sigh, "I don't want to burden you with my problems."
Sam internally rolled his eyes, "God, you sound just like your mom. You can tell me anything, no judgement here. I'm all ears."
"Okay, so you know I'm in the spring production play for Romeo and Juliet and of course I'm the modern day Romeo and all that jazz but that's not the problem. As part of my character, it's pretty obvious that I have to kiss Juliet and the director wants me to really get into it and make it seem real."
"Ohh." Sam said slowly, smirking a little, "Brent's jealous."
"He is and it's causing a rift between us. He just can't get the fact that it's acting and not me doing it on purpose."
"Sounds like both of you need to work on your insecurities. Just four days ago you jumped down his throat about the ice cream guy who gave him an extra scoop of ice cream on the house."
"But I had a valid reason. The dude gave him his number on a napkin, despite me being with him, he still did it." Maverick pouted as he sat back in the booth.
Sam looked at his daughter, "I'm definitely dreading the moment when you start dating." He turned back to Maverick, "You two should sit down and talk. If you don't, then it's just going to boil up and potentially make things worse between you guys."
Maverick knew he was right. They needed to talk and be honest with each other. He hated fighting with his boyfriend, he really did, "You know..I'm really glad you're in my life."
Sam smiled shyly, "Me too."
"Hey! What about me?" Madison asked with her mouth full of fries.
"And I'm really, really glad that you're in my life." He leaned over and tickled her side.
Sam smiled at them as he played with the straw of his drink.
Maverick pulled back and looked at Sam, "I've been meaning to ask you and mom about this last week but when are we moving in?"
"We're still trying to figure out if we want to buy a new house all together or just one of us moved in to the others. When we make a decision on that, we should be moving in at the beginning of summer."
"I think we should start somewhere fresh. We will need a bigger house anyways so my brothers and sisters can have a room." Madison said with a smile.
Maverick laughed loudly at her. She wanted a little brother or sister so bad and he couldn't blame her. He wanted one too and wished that his mom and Sam would speed up the process in giving them one.
"Remember our deal Muffin." Sam looked at his daughter with a raised brow.
Madison sighed, "Yeah, yeah..when the time is right. Geez daddy, I know."
Sam laughed at her bored tone, leaning over to kiss her cheek, stealing a fry from out of her basket.
Mercedes stood up from the chair when the girl was finished. She looked over to Mitchell, "I couldn't thank you enough."
"It's no problem Mercedes. I have two daughters and if something happened to them, I know I'll do anything to protect them." He opened the door for her as they walked back to the front of the building, "I'll double check and make sure that it's all gone."
When they came to the front door, she turned and hugged him, "Thanks again."
"You're welcome." He said, hugging her tightly, "And don't be a stranger. Next time you're in town, we should have dinner. My wife would love to meet you."
"I'll let you know." She smiled as she pulled back, tugging on her purse, "Thank you again Mitch." She waved one last time before she walked out the door. Picking her phone out of her purse as she walked to the cab, she dialed Sam's number excitedly, waiting for him to pick up so she could tell him the good news.
Sam was waiting for Maverick and Madison to finish up their food when he heard his phone ring, picking it up from the table, he smiled when he saw her name, "Hello."
"Hey baby." She moved aside as the man opened the door for her, sitting her purse in first, she got in her seat, strapping herself in, "It's taken care of."
Sam let out a breath he didn't even know he was holding, looking at his daughter who was explaining something to Mav, his emotions taking over him, "Thank you so much Mercy."
Mercedes smiled at his gentle tone, knowing that he was probably staring at Madi getting emotional, "I told you that I'll to anything for you and Madi." And that was the truth. She would do anything for Sam and Madison. They meant everything to her, "Now, I don't expect much but I do want a little something..if you know what I mean."
Sam eyebrows shot up, smirking at the thought of what she was saying, "I think I can manage that."
Mercedes smiled, "Good. Because it's long overdue." She looked out the window towards the trees, "What are you three up too?"
"Burger night."
Madison scooted by Sam and leaned up to the phone, "Hi mommy."
Sam chuckled at the little girl, giving her the phone.
"Hi sweetheart." Mercedes smiled, "Are you and Maverick being good for daddy?"
"I am, I don't know about Maverick."
"Hey!" Maverick looked at her, simulating shock.
Madison giggled at him, "When are you coming home?"
"Well, mama is getting on a plane tonight and I will back first thing tomorrow morning." She played with the ends of her shirt.
"Good because I miss you and Maverick is having boyfriend problems and he needs you."
"I'm sitting right here." Maverick said with a small laugh, shaking his head as he went back to texting his boyfriend.
Mercedes laughed as she heard Maverick, "Oh no, you're going to have to help him until I come back."
"I will mama. I love you and see you in the morning."
"Love you too baby girl."
Madison smiled as she handed to phone back to Sam.
Sam smiled as he took the phone back, "I'm back." He grabbed his wallet from his pocket, throwing some cash down for the bill.
"I'm going to let you guys. I'll call you when I land back in LA."
"Okay baby, have a safe flight. Love you."
"Love you too." She said before she hung up, looking out towards the beach when they got onto the highway.
As soon as her plane landed back in LA, Mercedes headed straight for the law firm. She left on a bad note and didn't know whether she was fired or not. Either way, she didn't really care. Laura was out of line for what she did and if she wanted to fire her for it, so be it. She sighed as she walked into the office, it was a little before six and all she wanted to do was be at home but she needed to take care of this. She knew Laura always came to work early, so she headed towards her office.
Lauren was finishing up some paperwork when she heard footsteps. She sighed when she looked up and saw it was Mercedes.
"So, I need to know if I need to clean out my office or not." She folded her arms across her chest.
Laura sat her pen down on her desk, leaning back in her chair, "I was out of line Mercedes." She said honestly, feeling bad for her behavior that she showcased, "I apologize for my behavior and hopefully you will forgive me."
"Laura.." She took a deep breath, trying to keep her anger at bay, "Besides being my boss, you were my friend. And as a friend, to ask me to do something like that was really shitty."
"I know Mercedes." She ran her hair through her hair, "I was so caught up into getting another case that I didn't actually think about what I was doing." She sighed when Mercedes didn't say anything, standing up, she grabbed her coffee cup, "You're not fired and I'm sorry again." She gave her one last look before she walked away.
Mercedes looked at her retrieving from with a sigh. She turned on her heels and walked out the building. Getting into her car, she drove a twenty minute distance to Sam's house. When she pulled into the driveway, she couldn't wait to get out of the car and be with her family. Closing the door, she walked up the walkway and got her key out to open the door. Turning the nob quietly, she closed the door back behind her and sat her things on the table. She walked up the stairs and stopped at the guest room, opening it slowly, she smiled when she saw Maverick on top of the covers snoring loudly. Shaking her head, she crack the door back and headed down the hallway so more to go to Madison's room, quirking a brow when she notice that she wasn't in her bed. She opened the door to Sam's room, immediately smiling when she found the two in the room.
Sam was rubbing his sleeping daughter's back gently as she laid down on his chest. He looked up when he heard the door crack open, smiling when he saw it was Mercedes, "You're back."
"Mhm." She walked over to him and planted a long kiss on his lips. She moved her mouth away from his and kissed Madi's forehead.
"She was up at four waiting for you." Sam whispered as he smooth down her messy locks.
Mercedes smiled as she slid out of her shoes, throwing her hair into a bun, walking to the bathroom to turn on the shower, calling out, "I had to stop by the office before I came here." She came back out and grabbed some clothes from the draw, "How about we keep the kids in today? It's Friday and I think they deserve a break."
"It's fine with me." He smiled when she smiled at him before disappearing to take a shower.
Madison shifted in Sam's arms when she heard him talking, "Daddy, is mommy here?" She said quietly, eyes still close.
"Yes baby. She's taking a shower." He kissed her forehead, "You don't have to go to school today sweetie, so you can go back to sleep."
"Yay." She celebrated softly as her eyes fluttered open, "But mommy's home, so I'm up now."
Sam laughed at his daughter, watching her moved off of him and lay beside him, "Madison?"
"Yes."
"I never ask you this but are you happy?" Sam asked seriously. He knew that she was but he wanted to here it from her own mouth.
"Yes daddy I am." She smiled at him, "I'm very happy that I'm with you and I don't have to see that woman again. She really hurt me daddy and I was sad that I couldn't come with you."
Sam felt tears starting to form in his eyes.
"But you came and got me like you always promised you would." She leaned up and wiped his tears, "I may only be six daddy but I know a lot for my age and I know that you love me and wouldn't let anything happen to me." She leaned up and hugged him.
Mercedes peeked through the door as she listen to Madison talk. It was unbelievable but so amazing how mature and intelligent she was for her age.
Sam hugged her tightly, letting his tears flow freely, "I love you soo much Muffin."
"I love you too daddy." She kissed his cheek as she laid her head on his shoulder.
Mercedes moved from the door and dried off completely, throwing on one of Sam's shirts and a pair of shorts. Putting her dirty clothes in the hamper, she opened the door, "Is there enough room for me in this hug?"
Madison pulled away and smiled. She got off the bed and ran to her, wrapping her arms around her waist.
Mercedes bent down and picked her up, walking over to the bed, she pulled the covers back and slide in with Madison in her arms, comfort hitting her as she laid on the cool sheets, letting out an appreciative hum as she closed her eyes.
Sam looked at how tired she was and decided to do something, "How about we cook some breakfast Muffin while we let mama sleep?"
"Okay." Madison nodded as she closed her eyes also, letting sleep take over her.
Sam laughed at how quickly they both fell asleep. He slid out of the bed and pulled the covers over them. He leaned down and kissed both of their foreheads before he turned off the lights.
