Mercedes held on to Sam's hand tightly as they sat in the doctor's office waiting for the OBGYN to come back. Even though the test were all positive, they still wanted to make sure.
Dr. Kline opened the door, smiling at the couple as he walked to his stool, "Good news here. You are indeed pregnant Ms. Jones." He sat the file down on the counter, "Seven weeks to be exact."
Mercedes looked over at Sam with a smile when he squeezed her hand.
"I'm going to start you up on some prenatal vitamins and get you scheduled in for your regular check ups." He grabbed his pad out of his pocket and scribbled something down, ripping it when he was finished, he handed the paper to Sam, "I will see you in three weeks."
"Thank you Dr. Kline." They said in unison as they watched the man leave.
Mercedes looked at Sam with a smile, "I can't believe I'm having another baby and getting married."
"Believe it baby. It's all happening." Sam kissed the side of her forehead, "And I can't wait for it."
"Me either." She hugged him closely.
Sam helped her off of the bed and walked out of the building. When they got in his truck, he turned to her, "Are you hungry?"
"Mhm." She said as she sat her hand on her stomach.
Sam smiled at her as he turned on his engine and pulled out of the parking lot.
Mercedes was in the living room packing up some of the things that she could. Since she found out she was pregnant, her and Sam decided it would be best if they started the process of packing up their homes. Mercedes grunted as she tried to reach the top of the shelf for something.
"I'll get it." Maverick said as he walked over to her, reaching his arm up to grabbed the DVDs from the shelf.
"Thank you." She smiled as she took them from his hand and sat them in the box on the table, closing the tabs down.
"You're welcome." He looked around at all the boxes and the half emptied living room, "This is really it.."
Mercedes tapped the box closed before she looked back at him, "Yeah, it really is."
"I'm excited." He said as he plopped down on the couch.
"Me too." She sat down beside him, resting a hand on her stomach, "I'm tired already."
Maverick smiled at her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders, "I can finish up if you want me too."
"I don't want you to do it by yourself." Mercedes pouted.
"Mom, you're pregnant. You really shouldn't be doing anything anyways." He gave her a stern look.
"Since when did you become my daddy?" She raised a brow at him.
"Since you became pregnant and need to be less stressed as possible." He said, mocking her facial expression. His eyes soften after awhile, "I'll just get some of the guys to come over and help."
Mercedes frown started to dissolve from her lips, "Thank you."
"You're welcome." He patted her knee as he stood up, "I'm going to go call them."
"Okay." She watched as he disappeared into the other room. She laid her down on the couch, letting out a small huff as she did so.
Madison was humming along to the radio that was playing in her room. She was so excited about getting to move into their house a little early and she was definitely happy about being a big sister. She blew her hair out of her face when she moved one of her boxes out in the hallway.
Sam heard a small grunt as he was heading up the stairs, seeing his daughter trying to push the box out by herself, he laughed softly, "Need some help?"
Madison looked up, shaking her head, "I got it daddy."
"You sure?"
Madison bent down and picked the box up, tilting a little to side as she did, blowing out a long breath, "I got it." She smiled as she walked passed him and down the stairs.
Sam shook his head with a smile on his face as he walked towards his room, hearing his phone ring, he picked it up from the dresser, "Hello?"
"Samuel Evans, you have some explaining to do."
Sam winced at his mother's tone, "Ma.."
"Don't you 'Ma' me boy." She said through gritted teeth, "Why the hell did you not tell me that you not only are engage and brought a brand new house but I'm getting another grandchild also?"
"Ma, I was going to call you..I've just been super busy with everything I swear." He said honestly.
Mary took a calming breath, running her hand through her hair, "I'm sorry.. I'm just kind of hurt that I had to hear it from your brother and not you."
"I know and I'm so sorry." Sam said as he sat on the edge of his bed, "Would it be better if I told you now even though you already know?" He cleared his throat loudly, "Mom, I brought a new house for my new family. I proposed to my girlfriend the same night I found out I was going to be a father again."
Mary smiled at his silliness, feeling her eyes water up, "I'm so happy for you."
Sam felt his own eyes starting to fill up with tears, "It's everything I have ever wanted and now it all happening at once."
Mary nodded, "It's a blessing. I'm excited to be gaining a daughter in law and two more grandchildren."
"They're pretty excited about it too. To be honest, I thought Maverick was going to hate this ordeal and I really thought he was going to not like me and think I was trying to replace his dad."
"It all comes down to how he was raised and Mercedes did a wonderful job in raising a respectable young man. He knows that you are not trying to replace his dad, Sam. He sees the love that you have for his mother and for him too."
Sam sighed as he looked outside of door, seeing his little girl take another box down the stairs, "Thank you for that."
"I'm your mother Samuel, it's my job." She smiled through her phone, hearing her husband call her for help, she rolled her eyes, "I have to go tend to your father, he's attempting to fix the sink."
Sam laughed at her, "Alright. I'll talk to you later. Love you." He hung up the phone and tossed it in his bed.
Madison came into his room and plopped down in his lap with a huff.
Sam chuckled at her, "Tired Muffin?" Feeling her nod against him, he wrapped his arms around her and stood up, "Come on, I'll help you and then we can go get some lunch." He headed to her room to help her get the rest of her things downstairs.
Mercedes watched as the items in the rooms quickly became packed. She had to admit that she was grateful for the extra hands in the house. She sat up the computer and turned on to Skype. She never made it around to telling her brother about everything that has been going on and she's pretty sure that Luke or her dad has told the rest of them. She straighten up her hair when she saw Brandon calling, clicking the answer button, "Hey."
"Hey pregnant fiancée lady." He smirked as he sat up in his chair, "Congrats sis."
"Thank you." Mercedes said sweetly.
"You're welcome." Chris said as he looked at his watch, "I only have a few minutes so I wanted to tell you that I plan on coming out there in a couple of weeks to help if y'all need any."
"That'll be good." She looked up when she heard someone call her name, she looked back at him with an apologetic look, "I'm sorry I have to go."
"It's okay, I do too." He smiled at her, "I love you Mercy."
"I love you too." She waved at him before she turned off the computer, reminding herself to talk to her mom and sisters later on. She stood up from the stool and walked towards the living room, nodding in appreciation to see that they were done with all the rooms downstairs, "Thank you guys so much."
"Welcome Ms. Jones." Jason said as he sat on the stairs.
Brent sat beside his brother and laid his head down on his shoulder, "No problem Ms. Jones. You know we'll do anything for you."
The other six boys nodded in agreement.
Mercedes smiled at them, grabbing her keys from the table, "And I couldn't thank you guys enough for that. Lets go get some food, everything is on me." She laughed loudly as they all piled outside and headed to their cars, shaking her head, she closed and locked the door behind them.
Sam held Madison's hand as they walked into the pizza parlor. Mercedes had called them to let them know they were getting some lunch and invited them down. He smiled at his daughter as she excitedly ran to the table.
"Hey mama." She kissed Mercedes cheek as she sat beside her, waving over at Maverick who was down at the other table.
"Hey sweetie." She smiled as she slid her the drink, "I ordered you a sprite."
"Thank you." She said sweetly.
Sam bent down beside her, kissing her softly on the lips, "How are you?"
"Good." She smiled at him, "Thanks to those handsome young men over there, I didn't lift a thing today." She turned a placed two slices of pizzas on Madi's plate, sliding it to her with a smile.
Sam chuckled at her as he fixed his own plate, taking a bit out of his own slice.
Madison bit down into her sausage pizza, smiling at the delicious taste.
Mercedes wiped her mouth, sipping down some of her water, "Did you guys get done?"
Sam nodded, swallowing his food, "We finished our rooms, getting the things out of the cabinets in the kitchen, and we're almost finished with the living room."
Madison nodded happily, "We're almost done and then we get to move into the new house."
Mercedes wrapped her arm around the little girl, "Are you excited?"
"Yes." Madison looked at her with a wide smile, wiping her hands off with a napkin, she placed one of her hands on Mercedes stomach.
Mercedes smiled down at her, placing her own hand down on Madison's, "You're going to be a wonderful big sister."
Sam smiled over at his girls, sipping some of his drink down.
Mercedes kissed her forehead, she leaned up and grabbed a couple of coins out of her purse and handed it to her, "How about you go play a few games while I talk to daddy?"
Madison nodded as she slid out of the chair. She smiled as she followed Maverick into the game room.
Sam stood up, going to sit beside her, "What's going on?"
Mercedes turned to him, playing with her hands, "I want to talk to about something and I want to know your thoughts on it."
"Okay.." He stop her from fiddling with her hands, intertwining their fingers together.
"I have been thinking about this for awhile and I just didn't know how to bring it up to you." She said quietly, tucking her hair behind her ear, "I-I want to know how you feel..about me adopting Madison. Well, not exactly adopting her but become a legalized guardian for her." She stammered out, nervously awaiting for his answer.
Without a beat, Sam grabbed her by her face and kissed her, tilting his head to the side.
Mercedes was shocked by the action but she didn't pull away.
Sam kissed her fully until he pulled back, kissing the side of her face, running his fingers through her hair, "Why were you so nervous to tell me?"
Mercedes shrugged as she avoided eye contact with him, "I didn't want to overstep my boundaries."
Sam frowned at her, "You're not overstepping anything baby." He lifted her chin, forcing her to look at him, "Madison loves you Mercedes, she idolizes you. You are the only real mother she knows."
Mercedes felt a tear slide down her face.
Sam leaned over and hugged her, rubbing soothing circles in her back, "Hormones starting already?"
Mercedes let out a watery laugh, sniffling as she buried her face in the crook of his neck, "I'm sorry.."
"For what? You have nothing to be sorry for." He whispered against her forehead, holding onto her tightly, "I think it's a great idea that you want to do this."
"Yeah?" She whispered as she looked up at him.
Sam nodded, "Yes."
Mercedes nodded against him, letting out a slow breath, "Okay." She wiped the remaining tears left away.
Madison came back happily, frowning slightly when she saw Sam in her seat, "Daddy you're in my seat."
Sam looked over at her, chuckling to himself as he let go of Mercedes, "My bad." He kissed Mercedes again before he got up.
Mercedes smiled as Madison came back and sat by her, smirking at Sam when she cuddle up into her side
Sam shook his head as he grabbed his wallet out of his pocket, "I'll take care of this."
"Sam.." Mercedes whined loudly.
"Mercedes.." He gave her a knowing look before he stood up and headed to the register.
Mercedes let out a huff, looking down at Madison with a pout.
Madi giggled loudly when she looked at Mercedes. She leaned up and gave her a hug, "I love you."
"I love you too." Mercedes smiled as she sat back, "Lets eat the rest of this pizza."
Madison smiled as she sat back in her chair and grabbed another slice.
Mercedes tugged at her shirt as she sat in the the chair in the courtroom. Today was the day that she was hopefully going to become Madison's parent. It really didn't matter what the outcome was going to be, she still was going to love that little girl like she has been doing for the past nine months. She looked over at her lawyer, Michelle Cassidy as she wrote something down on a piece of paper.
Sam grabbed her hand, squeezing it for comfort.
"Mr. Evans, Ms. Jones, and Ms. Cassidy." The judge greeted them as he walked in and sat in his chair.
"Judge McClain." The three said together.
"What a great pleasure it is for me to have my favorite lawyers and prosecutor in here today." He smiled at them before he looked down at the paper, "Ms. Jones..you're seeking to be a legal guardian over Madison Grace Evans?"
"Umm, yes sir." Mercedes said nervously as she held Sam's hand.
Judge McClain looked at her, noticing how nervous she was, "Ms. Jones..you know how this goes." He signaled for the bailiff.
"Yes sir, I do." She smiled weakly at him.
Sam looked down at her with a small smile.
Madison jumped off the bench when the bailiff came and got her from the back. She played with the end of her French braid as she walked towards the front. She looked over at Sam and Mercedes and sent them a nervous smile. Once she sat down in the chair, she turned to the judge.
"How are you today Madison?"
"I'm fine and you?" She asked sweetly.
"I'm doing quite well, thank you for asking." He smiled at her.
Madison nodded as she looked towards her parents.
Judge McClain cleared his throat as he looked at the little girl, "Do you know why you are here today?"
"No sir."
"Well..we're here to talk about Ms. Jones over there." Judge pointed to Mercedes, "Do you know her?"
Madison nodded quickly with a smile plastered on her face, "She's my mama."
Mercedes smiled at her as tried to hold in her tears.
"Your mama?" Judge McClain asked with a raised brow.
Madison frowned at him, "Yes my mama." She said with a little sass laced in her tone.
Sam bit back a laugh as he shook his head, he placed his arm around the back of Mercedes's chair.
"Okay." He said slowly, noticing a little hostility in her voice. She was a little feisty one, "Tell me why you like Ms. Jones."
Madison took a deep breath before she spoke, "Mama is just that, my mama. She loves me and I love her. She never has did anything to hurt me like that woman has."
"Who is that woman?" He asked curiously.
Sam cleared his throat loudly, getting up from his seat, "Judge if I may."
"No daddy." She looked over at him reassuringly, "I got it."
Michelle looked at Sam and nodded with a smile, "She has it Sam, we went over this."
Sam looked at her before he reluctantly sat back down in his seat.
Madison turned back to the judge, "That woman is my real mom but I don't want her to be. She use to hit me all the time and told me I couldn't go with daddy. I had a big bruise of my hip for a long time."
Mercedes covered her face with her hand, trying to keep her tears hidden, holding in a sob that was threatening to escape her mouth.
Sam bit down harshly on his lip as he listen to his daughter talk about that bitch. He rubbed Mercedes back when he saw her getting emotional.
Judge McClain wrote down everything that she was saying with a shake of his head. He couldn't believe someone could do this to a child. This is why he sometimes hated his job because he had seen way too many cases like this. He cast a glance over to the table, seeing that they were having a hard time so he decided to get off of the subject, "Okay..lets go back to talking about Ms. Jones."
"Like I was saying..I love my mama and I always will. She is the sweetest person ever and I don't ever want her to leave me." She looked to Mercedes with a smile on her face.
The judge smiled at the little girl, it was clear that she loved Mercedes and that she was well taken care of, "Thank you Madison, you can go back to your seat."
Madison stood up and went straight to her father, hugging him tightly around his waist.
Sam pulled her into his lap, "You did good sweetheart." He whispered as he dropped a kiss on her forehead.
"I think it's pretty clear that the love here is legit." He looked over at Mercedes, "Ms. Jones, I can tell this little girl truly adores you. Even with all the physical and emotional abuse, she finds comfort in you as a mother figure."
Mercedes wiped her tears away, nodding as she listen.
"And I don't see any reason you can't be a legal guardian towards her. With Mr. Evans having full custody rights, it's really up to him but as I can see...I think he wants this way more than you do." He chuckled loudly, pulling out a slip of paper, signing his signature over the documents, "But today, I hear by announce you as Madison Grace Evans second legal guardian and you also will have full rights just as your fiancée, Sam Evans." He smiled as he stood up and step down the steps, handing the papers to her.
Mercedes stood up and hugged him, taking the papers from him, "Thank you so much."
"Don't thank me, I'm just doing my job." He smiled as he walked away.
Madison ran over to her with tears in her eyes, face completely crimson as she looked at Mercedes, "Now you're really my mommy."
Mercedes picked her up carefully, mindful of her stomach, wiping her tears as well as Madison's, "I was always your mommy, no one can tell me otherwise."
Madison sniffled taking her small arms and wrapping them around her, burying her face into her neck.
Sam stood back and watch the scene before him, his own eyes getting misty. His daughter had a mother. It doesn't take blood to make you a family.
A/N. Ahh, happy times! This is just a filler chapter and the process of them moving in together will be in the next update. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow you guys. :)
