Maverick sighed as he walked towards the library. He couldn't believe he had one week left before he graduated. This last eight months have went by so quickly. He was so excited about starting a new chapter in his life and he legit couldn't wait for college. He entered the quiet area and found the person he was looking for, sitting his book bag down in the chair, "Hey.."
Brent looked up from his book and sent him a small nervous smile, "Hey.." He turned his attention back to his book as he tried to calm down his nerves. Him and Maverick had got partnered up to do their final project in English and the awkwardness was to a ten. Brent tried like hell to get the teacher to placed them with someone else but she refused. He bit down on his lip as he looked back at him, "Look, we don't have to do this together. I can e-mail my part so you don't have to work with me."
Maverick shrugged as he looked at him, "Who said I didn't want to work with you?"
"Come on Maverick, we both know you hate me." He said quietly as he played with the some of the pages in the book.
Maverick sat up in his seat and folded his arms across his chest, "I've never said I hated you Brent..pissed off and hurt? Yeah, that I was but I don't hate you..it's impossible for me to do that."
Brent sucked in the air before he cleared his throat, "Lets just begin on page twenty, it's the start of the climax."
Maverick rolled his eyes as he leaned over and closed the book, "Don't you get? I don't hate you. No matter how hard I have tried and trust me I tried, I can't hate you because despite what you did, you were still my best friend and my first love and I will always have a special place for you in my heart, no matter what."
Brent sat back and looked at him with tears in his eyes, "I'm sorry that I hurt you, that's the last thing I wanted to do. I was stupid and I made a mistake. You have no idea how much I regret what I did.." He wiped his face before he stood up abruptly and grabbed his things, "I'll just send you my part.."
"No, we're doing this together. We'll be done in no time." Maverick said as he stood up, stepping in front of him, "And when we finish this, we're going to continue to sit here until we work out our issues. I lost you as my boyfriend, I don't want to lose you as my friend."
Brent sighed as he dropped his book bag down, plopping back down in the chair, "Fine."
Maverick nodded as he went back to his chair and sat down, pulling out his own book so they could get started.
Sam smiled as he held Savannah in his arms. It's been an incredible eight months. He was so happy in his life. He had four amazing kids and an amazing wife. That's right, wife. Sam and Mercedes couldn't wait anymore. So four months after the twins birth, the two had a small ceremony with their family and friends in their backyard. It was one of the most amazing days of his life. He looked at Mercedes, who was walking in front of him pushing a sleeping Spencer in the stroller and holding onto Madison's hand with her free one and couldn't help but love the motherly look on her.
Mercedes stopped as she handed Madison the key to open the front door. She smiled when the little girl opened it and stepped aside so she could push the stroller inside, going directly into the living room. She slid out of her sandals and placed her purse on the couch, turning to her husband with a smile, her eyes going to their daughter, "Alright little missy, it's nap time."
As if she knew what her mother was saying, a small pout formed on her lips as she laid her head down on Sam's shoulder. Sam looked at Mercedes, tucking in his lips to keep his laughter at bay.
Mercedes threw her hands up in the air, letting out a huff, "I swear she is a daddy's girl." She picked Spencer up from the stroller and made her way up the stairs.
Sam laughed as he followed behind her, rocking Savannah so she could go to sleep.
Madison looked at her parents as they walked up the stairs, knowing they were going to be up there for a minute, she still didn't have much time. She ran to the kitchen and washed her hands quickly before opening the refrigerator to grab some ingredients. Once she got everything she needed, she stepped on the step stool and took out six sliced of bread, placing them each on plates. Taking a plastic knife, because Mercedes didn't want her using a real one yet, she spreaded mayo and mustard on all six slices before stacking it up with turkey, ham, lettuce and cheese. She smirked to herself as she stepped down, going over to the cabinet to get a big bag of Doritos, she moved everything over to the kitchen table.
Sam turned off the light as he held the baby monitor in his hand, "Well that was easy today."
Mercedes rolled her eyes at her husband as she walked down the stairs, "Yeah right, your daughter wouldn't go to sleep for nothing."
"She's your daughter too babe." Sam chuckled as he followed her down the stairs.
Mercedes shook her head as she stepped down the last step, turning the corner so she could go to the kitchen and start on lunch. When she got into, she was surprised to see the table fixed up with sandwiches and chips already waiting on it, "Madi what's this?"
The little girl smiled as she sat the last plate on the table before turning to her mother, "I made us lunch." She stated proudly as she pulled out a chair for her.
Mercedes smiled at her daughter, dropping a kiss on her forehead before she sat down, "It looks so delicious, thank you baby girl."
Sam entered the kitchen with his growling stomach, "Woah, you made lunch fast babe."
Mercedes laughed softly, "I didn't make it, Madison did."
"Thank you Muffin.." Sam looked over at his daughter with a smile as he sat down, raising a brow, "But what's wrong with you sweetheart?"
Madison bit down on her lip as she sat down in the chair, "Nothing daddy.."
"Oh there's something wrong.." He said as he popped a chip in his mouth, staring at her intensely.
Mercedes bit into her sandwich, chewing and swallowing before she looked between Sam and Madison curiously.
Madison sighed as she stared at her plate, "I just want to spend time with y'all. I know your busy with Spencer and Savannah and I just feel like..." She drifted off, letting out a sad sigh.
"Oh baby.." Mercedes said with a small frown as she moved over to her, knowing exactly what was wrong with her, "We didn't want you to feel like that weren't paying attention to you Madi. That's the last thing we want to do."
"I know..and I know the babies require a lot of attention but sometimes I feel like you don't love me anymore and I'm sorry that I feel that way." Madison said quietly as she wiped a tear that managed to slide from her eyes.
"Come here.." Sam said as he gestured for Madison to come to him. When she did, he picked her up and placed her in his lap, "We will always love you Madison, always. And don't you dare apologize for feeling like this.." He wiped her face, "You know...I felt the same way you do know when Aunt Stacey and Uncle Stevie were born."
"You did?" Madison looked at him in shock.
Sam nodded as kissed her cheek, "Yep..I locked myself in my room and cried many of nights because I thought my parents didn't love me anymore. Come to find out, that wasn't the case at all. My mom cried when I finally told her why I was being so distant from them. She said she didn't even notice that I felt that way. Her and my dad apologized all that night for it too." He watched as Madison put her head down and played with her fingers.
"I also thought my parents were the same way. With six of us in the house and me being the oldest, their attention were sometimes was more on Zoe and Luke instead of me." Mercedes grabbed her small hands with a soft smile, "Daddy and I are sorry baby girl. We're just going to have to work super hard on not leaving or making anyone feel left out."
"And we're going to do that this weekend.." Sam piped in, rubbing her back gently, "I'll get mom and dad to watch the twins while you, mama, and myself do something together. Just the three of us. Sounds like a plan?"
Madison nodded with a happy smile on her face, "Yes."
Mercedes smiled as she leaned forward and kissed her forehead, "I love you baby girl."
"I love you mama.." She smiled sweetly before turning to Sam, "I love you too daddy."
"I love you Muffin." He hugged her tightly, "Never be afraid to tell us how you feel okay?" When she nodded, he smiled and kissed the side of head patting her thigh, "Now, lets enjoy this nice lunch you have prepared for us."
Madison smiled as she bit into her sandwich. Don't get her wrong, she loved her brother and sister so much but she missed hanging out with her parents.
"See, we finished in less than three hours." Maverick said as he placed their essay in his binder, looking back up at Brent, giving him an I told you so look.
Brent rolled his eyes, letting out a small chuckle, "Fine..you were right."
"Thank you." Maverick smiled smugly as he leaned back in his chair. It felt like old times before all the drama came between them. They haven't spoken in months and it was kind of weird on how they fell back into ease with one another. He looked at Brent closely and could tell the changes that went on with him throughout the months. He seemed more mature and relaxed than he has been, "Can you at least tell me why?"
"I was stupid." Brent said honestly, knowing exactly what he was referring to, "There's no other reason I could tell you besides that. I cheated on my best friend and every single day that goes by, I regret it. I can't apologize enough for hurting you Maverick, I can't."
"I know you're sorry and I forgive you." Maverick said as he played with the ends of his tablet. Thing was, even how stupid it may seemed to anyone else, Maverick forgave Brent a long time ago. He didn't believe in holding grudges against anyone, no matter what they did. He looked up at him with a curious expression, "So..are you like dating anyone?"
Brent laughed as he stood up and placed his book bag on, shaking his head, "No, I'm not. I need to work on myself before I even try to get in another relationship."
"Good.." Maverick said in a relieved tone. He closed his eyes when he realized how that sounded, cursing under his breath, "I mean it's good that you're working on yourself.."
"I knew what you meant." Brent said with a small smile, looking at his phone, "I should get home."
"Me too." Maverick said as he grabbed his stuff too and walked with Brent until they made it out of the building, saying their goodbyes before they went their separate ways.
"I just have a quick question though.." Brent called out as he stopped in the middle of the street, turning around to Maverick with a teasing smirk, "Is he a better kisser than me?"
Maverick mouth open and closed before he bursted out in laughter, shaking his head, "I'm not answering that."
Brent shrugged, "It was worth a try. I'm glad we can be friends again Maverick, I really missed you."
"Same here. Even mama misses you, that should tell you something." He smiled as he stuck his hands in his pockets.
Brent nodded with a smile as he turned back around and started walking, "See you around.."
"Bye." Maverick called after him as he moved into the direction of his own car. Friendship is always a sweet responsibility, not an opportunity. That quote stuck with Maverick because him and Brent have been friends forever. He's been with him through the toughest times and despite what had happened between them when they were in a relationship, he knew that deep down in his heart, he would never find another friend like that.
