And now, let the story resume!
June, Soledad, Lily, Logan, Takeshi, Amber, Jay, Jocelyn, Lexi, Nolan, Michio, Annastasia, and all of their Pokémon were on their way to their first battle location, the Mahogany Gym. The Mahogany Town was located in the woods not too far from Pallet. Their plan was to spend the entire day training with their traveling companions, and then Lexi and Nolan were going to challenge AJ, the gym leader. This way the kids will not only get in a lot of training, but they will also get to watch two accomplished Pokémon trainers battle for their badge first.
"I have never been to the Mahogany Gym before," said Lexi.
"Last time we battled at the Indigo Plateau, we only did the traditional gyms," Nolan explained. "Cerulean, Pewter, Vermillion…etc."
"My dad battled at the Mahogany Gym before it was even an official gym," Amber said proudly. "He says Gym Leader AJ is super tough."
"And my parents stole from the Mahogany Gym before it was an official gym," said Jocelyn, crossing her arms proudly.
"Flaafy flaa," said Flaafy, mimicking her movements, as usual.
"Don't you mean 'attempted to steal'?" Soledad inquired.
"Char Char?" asked Soledad's Charmander, who she recently nicknamed 'Chary'.
"Nope. Though they failed at their main goal, which was to steal Pikachu, they did manage to go back after Ash had left and steal a bunch of Pokémon food and some Pokeballs," Annastasia responded. "Not saying that I approve…"
"So, they weren't total failures," Jay added.
Nolan rubbed the back of his head and blushed. "So, Annastasia—what kind of gym is this supposed to be again?"
"Primarily a normal-type gym," she smiled. "Ash told me he has a Sandslash, Pidgeotto, Raticate, Nidoran, Snorlax, and a Doduo. So, some are flying and ground-types too, but there are no elemental Pokémon, such as water or fire-types."
"Normal-type gym? What a dumb idea," said Michio.
Michio lagged towards the back of the group and was the only one who did not have at least one Pokémon walking beside him, as Pikachu was still locked inside her ball.
"It's smart," Annastasia responded. "Normal-types have more neutral weaknesses than any other type. Whether or not you win the battle depends more on the individual's training than type differences."
"Except when you're up against fighting-types, which are super-effective against normal-types, or ghost-types, which are not affected by normal-type moves at all," said Jay.
Annastasia beamed. The other kids looked at Jay, impressed, except for Amber.
"He read that out of his Pokédex," Amber said as she revealed the device Jay had tucked behind the Togetic in his arms.
"Well, it's good for you all to have that information anyway, and good for you, Jay, for doing your research," said Annastasia. "Michio, did you catch that?"
"Not using type differences sounds like a lot of extra work," he retorted.
Annastasia stopped in her tracks and glared at Michio. Everyone stopped walking to watch the two of them.
"Wouldn't you know?" Nolan jeered.
"Nolan, I got this," said Annastasia. "Listen, Michio—"
As Annastasia lectured, Takeshi tapped June. She went red and speechless for a moment as he whispered:
"He sure is a piece of work. Poor Annastasia."
June fumed; that was the eighth time that day Takeshi mentioned Annastasia; every other sentence from Takeshi was about her.
"At least I know there's no competition," June mumbled after he turned away. 'Because Takeshi's as realistic as he is gorgeous and A's probably spending every second of her free time thinking of ways to curb Michio.'
"Did you say something?" Jay asked, leaning in.
"N-no!" June quipped. "I didn't say a word."
"I thought you whispered something. Guess it was just my imagination."
"Yes—it must've been."
June made brief eye-contact with Michio. She sighed in frustration—this journey was going to be a long one.
"You're so annoying when you talk," they heard Michio continue. 'Grunt.'
"You can talk to her like that!" Jocelyn exclaimed.
"Flaaa!"
"You have some nerve," said Nolan. "Annastasia deserves your respect."
"Yeah!" the rest of the group agreed.
"You're the rudest person I ever met," said Jay. "A, aren't ya gonna do something?"
"It's okay," Annastasia assured the others. "I don't need you to defend me—I can more than handle him on my own."
Annastasia walked up to Michio and got really close to his face. Up against a tree, there was no way for him to back up.
"I'm in charge," Annastasia asserted. "Your parents and I have an arrangement. Every time you misbehave, I notify them, and then they prepare to auction off one of your precious little purebred or legendary Pokémon."
Michio's expression changed from anger to confusion.
"That's a lie," he said, pushing her away.
"Annastasia doesn't lie," said Nolan. "And don't you dare touch her again."
Michio ignored Nolan and focused on Annastasia.
"You're bluffing," he said.
"Nope," Annastasia replied. "They said they would start with the Liepard. There was this one your mother called 'Peru' or something. You father said she would sell for over two million dollars in the auctions."
"They wouldn't dare sell Peruva."
"They said that you have to listen to me. That means you have to be respectful. If I give you an order, you have to follow it. If not, I send Mom and Dad a text."
"Whoa. She totally owns you," said Amber. "A, you're my hero."
Annastasia smiled. "Thank you. And you ought to know that I'm a benevolent despot—I'll warn you before I message your parents and I will treat you just like everybody else here. That means you have to help with the chores, be kind to your Pokémon, and stop cursing every five minutes. It's pissing me off."
"I'm sorry," Jay sighed.
Annastasia and the others watched him quizzically.
"Why are you apologizing?" Amber asked. "She wasn't talking to you."
"Oh, right. Yeah…just thought someone ought to apologize."
"You're sweet," Annastasia cooed before returning her attention to Michio. "Was that straightforward enough for you?"
Michio smirked. "For now."
"Let's keep going," Nolan suggested. "And we have a long walk ahead of us."
Everyone nodded and resumed their march.
"Let Pikachu out of her ball," Annastasia told Michio. "She ought to socialize with the others and get some exercise."
"Fine," he sighed, releasing the Pikachu.
"Chuuuu!" she screamed, shocking Michio angrily.
The Pikachu ran into the forest, leaving Michio fried on the ground.
"Please go after her," Annastasia told the others.
Nolan, the kids, and most of the Pokémon ran into the forest after Pikachu. Annastasia and Lexi knelt beside Michio. Bleu, Lil-G, and Lexi's Venasaur hovered around them.
"Bleu, use Heal Pulse," Annastasia instructed.
"Tarrrr!"
Michio felt the pain leave his body. He opened his eyes and sat up, surprised to see Lexi, Annastasia, and their Pokémon hovering around him.
"Stupid electric rat…," he muttered. "Why the fuck did it shock me?"
"You're welcome," Annastasia sighed.
She offered to help him to his feet, but he refused.
"I didn't ask for your help," he grumbled.
"You needed it," said Lexi.
"Pikachu shocked you because you're a shitty trainer," said Annastasia, responding to his previous inquiry. "They can hear you when they're in those balls. You hurt her feelings."
"This was your fault," Michio retorted. "You told me to let her out in the first place. She wouldn't have shocked me if she stayed inside."
"You need to BOND with her! You can't keep her locked up forever!"
"Who's gonna stop me?!"
"I am!"
"I'll let you two go at it," Lexi sighed.
Lexi walked away. Annastasia and Michio didn't stop until almost ten minutes later, after Annastasia said:
"Being nice is a choice. It's not in DNA, not in upbringing, it's ultimately up to you. It's one of the only true choices we get in life—so choose wisely."
"What makes you the authority?" he asked.
"Other than the fact that I'm literally your authority, I've seen the world. You haven't."
"Hmm…"
"Can we stop now?"
"Yeah, I'm good. Let's let it go."
As they walk back, Michio said:
"But ultimately, I won that argument. I was right and you were wrong."
Annastasia pushed him into the mud.
"Fuck, what was that?" he groaned as he pulled himself off the ground.
"An unfortunate accident," she replied. "It's a good thing there's a stream nearby; We'll wait for you to finish your laundry before we continue our journey."
"How sweet."
"You're welcome."

Meanwhile, Lily and Logan were the first ones to catch up to runaway Pikachu. The startled Pokémon was hiding under a log in the forest. Lily and Logan tried to communicate with it in Pokémon language.
"Ny, nya nya?" Lily asked. "Why don't you come back with us?"
"Pika chuuu pi, chu. 'I never want to see that awful trainer again'."
"Nya, ny nya ny ny…Nya." 'We know he sucks, but we have an awesome friend who will make sure you get treated better for now on.'
"Pi pika pika chu pika." 'Tell my trainer he has to take the lock off his Pokeball so that I can get out for fresh air when I need it.'
"Prrrrow, prow," said Logan. 'No problem, mi amiga.'
Pikachu followed Lily and Logan back to Annastasia, who was now joined by Nolan, Lexi, and the kids.
"Ahem!" Lily started.
Everyone turned to look at the Pokémon.
"You found her! Great!" Lexi exclaimed.
"You're the best," said Annastasia.
"We know," Logan replied.
"Pikachu said she'll come back on several conditions," said Lily.
"Great, what are they?" Annastasia asked as Michio crossed his arms indignantly.
"First, she wants him to take the lock off her Pokéball so that she can come out whenever she wants," said Logan.
"Second, she wants him to stop calling her mean names," said Lily.
"And third, she wants to be treated like a member of the team."
"Is that all you need, Pikachu?" Annastasia asked. She bent down and gently scratched her behind the ears, much to her satisfaction.
"Pi pikaaa," she responded, nodding her head. "Pikachu ka pi."
"She says that if Michio doesn't listen to her, she's gonna shock him whenever she feels like it," Logan translated. "And she really likes those scratches behind her ears."
"Michio, I order you to take the lock off of her Pokeball immediately," said Annastasia. "You're not allowed to call her any mean names and for now on you will treat her respectfully. Give her a TR bandana and some ear scratches while you're at it."
"Fine," he muttered.
Pikachu climbed up his torso and sat on his shoulder. He took the TR handkerchief that Wobbuffet had given him and tied it around her neck. He also gave her a few scratches, just as Annastasia had instructed. He handed his Pokéball over to Nolan, who used a small tool to tear the lock off.
"Now that this is settled, let's keep going," said Annastasia.
Everyone started marching forward, their moods significantly brighter now that Pikachu was content.

After several hours of training, Lexi and her Venasaur and Vibrava were going to go up against Gym Leader AJ and his Pidgeotto and Kangastan. First, it was Venasaur versus Kangastan.
"The first move's yours," AJ announced.
"Vine Whip, Venasaur," Lexi instructed.
"Double Slap!"
The Kangastan moved at an unprecedented speed, dodging every vine.
"Hang in there and use Sweet Scent!" said Lexi.
"Kangastan, use Giga Impact!" AJ ordered.
"What's that move?" Jay asked the others.
"Giga Impact is a normal-type move with a 98% success rate. While it's nearly as powerful as a Z-Move, it renders the user too exhausted to move twice in a row," said Soledad. "The fact that Venasaur didn't faint from the attack means Lexi has trained her well."
"What's a Z-Move?"
"I'll explain some other time."
Venasaur won the match against Kangastan.
"Go, Lexi!" Everyone (except for Michio) cheered.
"Well done," AJ praised. "Let's see how you do against my Mega Pidgeot."
"Go, Lexi! You rule!" the kids continued. "Woohoo!"

During the battle, Michio was outside, pacing angrily.
"Stupid Mother, stupid Father, stupid kids, stupid Team Rocket, stupid Annastasia.' he thought over and over again in his head. 'I hate everything about this.'
During his internal rant, Annastasia peeked out the window.
"Whatcha looking at?" Logan asked as he jumped onto her shoulder. "Oh, him. What's he doing?"
"Attempting to cope," Annastasia replied. "Just leave him—I think it's for the best."
"If you say so."
After Lexi scored a victory over AJ, it was Nolan's turn to battle for the Strength Badge. He used his Blastoise and Cacturne to defeat AJ's Sandslash and Jigglypuff.
"See that, Cyndaquil?" Takeshi asked his Pokémon. "One day we'll be that strong."
"Cynda!" he replied happily.
"You too, Bulba," June told Bulbasaur. 'Soon.'
"That was an awesome battle," Jay said as Lexi and Nolan showed the children their badges. "Togetic and I have a looong way to go."
"The point in watching them battle was not only to teach you more about gym battles, but to inspire you," said Annastasia. "Of course, you all have a long way to go. That's why we're working together to get there."
"I can't wait!" Jocelyn squealed.
"Flaaaafy!"
"I didn't know that Blastoise could learn Dig," said Jay. "Or that Vibrava could learn Recover."
"As my father would tell you, almost any Pokémon could learn almost any move if they train hard enough," said Soledad. "In his research, my dad has come across Meowth that can use Flamethrower, Pikachu that can learn Surf, Eevee that can use Hyperbeam, and so much more."
Just as they were heading out, AJ's recently healed Jigglypuff jumped out in front of them. It began singing.
"Jiggly, don't do that!" AJ ordered.
It was too late. Within seconds, everyone in the gym was fast asleep. Jigglypuff wrote on their faces and then fled the area.
"That the hell?" Michio groaned as he entered the gym.
Lexi's Salemence popped out of its ball. With a mighty roar, it woke everyone in the vicinity.
"Hahahahha!" Jocelyn laughed as she pointed to her sibling's faces. "Jigglypuff wrote on you with marker after you fell asleep!"
"Flaaa!"
"Yours too," Annastasia giggled.
"Oh nooo!" Jay moaned as he stared into his pocket mirror. "Now I have to redo my foundation and everything!"
"Sorry about that," said AJ. "That's Jigglypuff for ya…thought he grew out of it. I'll get towels."
"How come your face's clean?" Soledad asked Michio.
"He wasn't here," said Amber.
"I was outside. When I came back everyone was asleep and was drawn on with marker," said Michio.
"That's the same Jigglypuff that used to follow my parents and Ash around," said Annastasia. "He gets angry when everyone falls asleep after hearing his song, and so as revenge he writes on their faces with marker."
"Who'd want an idiot Pokémon like that?"
"I love Jigglypuff," said AJ defensively. "He's smart. Strong too—beats ninety-percent of the trainers who stop by my gym to get their Strength Badge."
"You said this was a normal-type gym, so this sorta thing…is normal?"
"Yep," Annastasia responded. "Get used to it."
XO
Later that night, the children called their families to tell them about their adventures.
"So, AJ still has Sandslash," Ash said over the phone. "That's his original partner, just like Pikachu is mine."
Amber explained how Jigglypuff knocked everyone out and wrote on their faces.
"We always wondered what happened to that Jigglypuff. It followed us for a while, even visited me when I lived in Alola for a while," Ash responded.
"It was always sort of a wanderer," said Misty. "I guess it finally found a home there."
"Pip and I might face it, but first I have to catch a second and third Pokémon," said Amber. "AJ always does three-on-three battles, and I don't wanna overwork Pip."
"Well, Jigglypuff's a normal and fairy-type, so keep that in mind when you try to catch your own Pokémon…actually, never mind. What's most important is that you like the Pokémon you catch—so try to be friends with everyone," said Ash.
"I will."
"What's everyone up to?" Misty asked.
"Talking to their families too."
"Do you all have enough food to eat? Enough fresh water?" James asked Annastasia, Jay, Jocelyn, Lily, Logan, and their Pokémon. "I can come over there. You really aren't that far away."
"We're fine, silly," Jocelyn replied. "Onēsan is taking very good care of us."
"Flaaa."
"And while I really do miss my shiny Mareep-wool sheets, high-speed internet, and personal bathroom, I gotta admit: it's nice being out here in the forest without all that stuff," said Jay.
"Togetic Toge."
"This camp food isn't too bad," said Lily.
"A's a really good cook," said Logan. "She made us all fish tacos!"
"Sounds yummy," James replied. "You aren't making her do all the work, are you?"
"Everyone's chipping in," said Annastasia. "Even Michio."
"How'd you manage that?" asked Jessie.
"I have my ways…"
"Hmmm…. you didn't…promise him anything, did you?"
Jocelyn and her Pokémon looked at Annastasia quizzically while Jay face-palmed.
"Mom!" Annastasia exclaimed, realizing what her mother was implying. "I just told him about what his parents said about auctioning off his Pokémon if he didn't listen to me. You know I wouldn't…"
"Just double checking," Jessie responded. "I don't like him and I want you to not like him too."
"Where'd Papa go?" Jay asked, surprised that he didn't comment on their conversation.
"She pushed me out of the way when Anna-chan mentioned 'Michio'," James said as he returned to the screen. "What'd I miss?"
"Nothing important."
"Lemme talk to dem!" Meowth demanded as he and Lucy came between Jessie and James.
"Yeah, your time's up," said Lucy.
The screen went dark. It sounded like someone ripped the phone away from them. The kids heard a bang, a few curse words, James' signature squeal, a 'Wobbbuffett!' and a crash. A few moments later Meowth and Lucy's faces appeared on the screen.
"How yous doin?" Meowth asked.
"Great," they responded in unison.
"Tell me more."
XO
Michio sat alone by the fire.
Everyone else was either talking to their families or tucked into their sleeping bags, having hushed conversations in the dark. His Pikachu was sitting with Amber's Pichu, and the two of them were laughing as they chatted about something in their mysterious Poke-language. Several other Pokémon were snuggled up together on the other side of the fire, preferring to sleep outside of their balls on the grass rather than inside on this warm spring evening.
'I suppose this could be worse,' he thought to himself.
After about twenty minutes, Michio started walking toward the forest.
"Where are you going?" Annastasia asked as stepped beside him. "We're going to sleep: Nolan, Lexi and I included."
"I want to be alone," he asserted.
"I can't let you go out without any Pokémon with you. Hang out with us until you build yourself a decent team, then I don't care where you go at night."
"You aren't my babysitter."
"Actually, I am your baby sitter; your parents are paying me to keep an eye on you."
'Shit…Seventeen years old…still being controlled by my parents…" he thought to himself. 'If only there was a way to make this stop...'
Annastasia seemed to have read his mind—Michio reasoned she did that a lot, meaning she either had supernatural elements or he was just highly predictable.
"You don't have to listen to me if you really don't want to," she said. "You're physically capable of taking care of yourself."
"What are you getting at? Are you saying you lied about the Liepard?" he asked.
"I don't lie. I mean that you only have to obey me if you want to return back to your old life. If you want your inheritance, all your Pokémon, your honor, then you have to listen to me for a few months, long enough to convince your parents that you've changed, whatever that is supposed to mean. But if you really want to be free, you can just let go of it all right now. Go into that forest alone. I'll take care of Pikachu and let your parents know about the decision you've made."
Michio turned and looked her in the eyes. Though it was dark, he could see them clearly in the light of the campfire blazing several feet away.
"That's unfair," he replied. "Both those decisions suck."
Annastasia tossed him a bottle of pills.
"What's this?" he asked.
"Allergy medication. Pikachu needs to take one tablet in the morning and one at night. Gary already gave it to her the morning dose before we got to the lab, but you have to give her the second dose," she explained. "Unless you want to leave."
"I get it—I'll stay and give her the fucking medicine."
"Pup?" Lil-G asked as Michio marched off.
"I don't know what his problem is, Lil-G", Annastasia responded as she bent down and scratched the puppy. "My job is to get him to act like a decent human being, not become his psychologist."
A few moments later Michio stomped back over to her.
"I gave her the medicine," he said, handing the pills back to Annastasia.
"Good, but keep these with you. I don't need them," she replied.
He shoved them into his pocket.
"If I see her sneezing, then I'll know that you forgot to give her the medicine," Annastasia said as he walked away. "And depending on that attitude, it might count as a strike."
Michio didn't turn around. Instead, he just gave her the middle finger and kept walking. Annastasia rolled her eyes.
"This is going to be a tough mission," she told her Pokémon. "But I like challenges."
AN: AJ is from the episode "Path to the Pokémon League" in Season One of the main anime. He is the green haired dude with the whip and the southern accent. He tells Ash that he is working towards getting his gym to become an 'official' Pokémon gym that could hand out badges that count for the Indigo Plateau, but according to the rules, he first has to get a certain number of victories before he can be recognized. This episode isn't very good, but I liked the headcanons they mention so I included it. Please let me know what you think in reviews:) Thanks!
