I awoke to the sound of my father giggling in the other room. I growled and got out of bed, pulling a jacket on.
"That mangy ol' mutt keeps it freezing in here..." I complained, padding down the hallway.
"Ah-! Chie you're awake!" My father chimed as he clutched some new kind of merch. Why he had such a love for Japan I'll never know.
"Your damn fanboy giggles woke me up ya dumb clown." I growled. He smiled and put the what-ever-it-was down. He walked closer to me with that creepy ass smile of his.
"What?"
"Hm? Nothing. I was just wondering why you weren't ready for school."
"School?" I scoffed. "I have special permissions remember? I don't have to go to school." The crazy coot wagged a finger in my face and grinned wider.
"Nuh-uh-uh~. I've made a new rule!" He straightened up in pride, gripping the sides of his coat. "You have to go to the cram school!" He laughed and patted my head as he walked by.
I nearly punched him.
I arrived at the cram school room an hour early. I planned on sitting in the back and minding my own business. I picked a seat and nestled in, my eyes closing for a moment. Before I knew it, I was asleep.
'Chie!' The most familiar voice rang in my ears. I spun to see Bon running toward me, his arms out wide for an embrace.
'Bon! Wait!' I shouted as the ground collapsed around me. I fell in, grasping at the air. Bon looked over the edge and waved to me. Black goo dropped down from his face, filling the pit I was trapped in. The process seemed to take years, but my lungs felt heavy in mere seconds. Screams and the smell of blood surrounded me. I closed my eyes and it all fell away. The goo, the smell and the feeling of desperation seemed to wash off of me. I lay floating abandoning the pain that filled my chest.
'Chie!' Just as I felt safe, floating in an airy abyss the voice shook me. My eyes fluttered open to see a bloody woman staring at me. Her hair tickled my nose and blood dripped from her eyes onto me. 'You let me die, Chie.'
I shook my head in fear. 'No, you... You died on your own!' Her hands wrapped around my neck, squeezing tighter and tighter.
'You let me die, Chie.' She repeated. Her words turned into a mantra, countless voices recited the words. They began to distort into war splitting static. I scratched at her hands desperately trying to breathe.
She slowly melted away, somehow fusing with the static itself. Her hands released my throat but I still felt their icy grip.
'Die, Digger.'
The sound of the door swinging open jostled me awake. I felt my throat. It felt bruised but I was sure it was just in my mind.
A dark haired glasses geek walked in and looked at me with a shocked expression.
"And you are?" He asked, adjusting his glasses.
"Nagahara Chie, and you're Yukio." I replied as nicely as I could. "Usually I would be a bit more irritated at the fact that you woke me up, but I suppose I should thank you instead."
He seemed to understand my meaning and I was glad. The last thing I needed was a bunch of questions that I didn't feel like answering.
"Why are you here so early?" Yukio asked, trying to busy himself with other tasks. He wrote some stuff on the board and arranged papers.
"I don't like coming into the middle of things." I shrugged and leaned back in the chair. "I guess you're here early to set up?" I asked trying to keep the conversation going. Yet another thing I hated, stale conversations.
"Yes. Though I don't like coming in the middle of things either." Yukio continued to scribble on the board. I began to throw more small talk at him. He obliged but kept himself occupied.
We both stopped talking when someone I almost recognized walked in. I couldn't place it. This person looked at me with his jaw dropped, there were barely audible sounds coming from the hallway behind this pink haired, lanky weirdo. The rough language became clearer as the owner pushed past pinky.
"Shima what the hell are ya doin' move!" The last person I wanted to see shoved past pinky.
"Bon..." My lips moved on their own. Stared wide eyed at the boy I had loved those four years ago. To my surprise, he looked at me for a split second and looked away. My heart sank, he didn't want to see me.
Class went on with Bon sitting ahead of me, not even beginning to look my way. Konekomaru, who hadn't changed much, looked between me and him with a worried expression. Shima smirked to himself for most of the class. Some dumbass named Rin was called on multiple times to answer questions but just made annoying mumbles. Yukio scolded him every time. Some know-it-all took over the idiots questions when Bon didn't. It was surprising to see him so knowledgeable. He was an innocent little pup when I met him but now he has wise words. Of course, it was only natural for him to be at True Cross. Aside from the Ryokan his family ran the local temple.
Class ended without issue. Yukio left me alone and most of the classmates left without speaking a single word to me. Konekomaru waved and smiled and Shima did the same.
It was just me and Bon, who hadn't moved. My mind wandered back to when we went to our root tunnel. The first time I had skinned my knee on a rose thorn at the entrance. Bon had freaked out and tore his favorite shirt so he could bandage it up. That day he cried for me. I couldn't begin to count the number of times he had cried for me since. Every time I got hurt, or my mother got worse he would cry instead of me. He even cried at her funeral for me. My heart swelled only to drop once again as he stood. He whipped around and stomped towards me. I stood out of instinct.
He raised his hand and I closed my eyes in preparation for him to hit me. He had a right to. I didn't even say goodbye. I had gave everyone a goodbye but Bon. I couldn't find the words. I couldn't think around him.
I waited for him to slap me but it never came. Instead I felt his hand caress my face, the same old calloused fingers that had done the same years before. He waited for me to open my eyes.
"I've waited for ya, Chie. I waited and waited for ya to come say goodbye to me. When you never came, I thought I had a chance to see ya one last time." He sighed. My heart squeezed. I had never seen Bon act like this. Usually he was brash with his words. I could tell he practiced this over and over in his head.
"Ya look just as beautiful as ya did that day." He smiled. "No, maybe even more so." His hand brushed my jawline just as it used to.
I felt something that I hadn't felt all my life.
"Hey, don' cry. If ya start cryin' I won' have a reason to cry. "He cooed. I shook my head and laughed. He pressed his forehead on mine and gently wiped the tears away. We stood there for a while, just basking in each other's presence.
The next day at class was much more interesting. Yukio decided to call me out.
"So, I gather that some of you know who Chie is. Let's level the field, shall we? Come up and talk about yourself, Chie."
This glasses wearing freak! I seethed on the inside.
"Fine, but I'm not gonna say anything without a question. What you know is based on what you ask." I shrugged and made my way to the front. I crossed my legs in the air and floated there. "Ask away."
The know-it-all spoke up and asked a really good question.
"I heard that you have connections within the school. Is that why you are allowed to go on missions without being licensed?"
"Yes and no. Yes I have connections, my father works here and is a very powerful man. He's a powerful, shitty, clown. But he isn't the reason I can go on unlicensed. I go on missions because the division I belong to makes use of me technically not being an exorcist." I replied, kind of upset to have such a good question early on.
Konekomaru stood up. "What kind of division?"
"Hm, ever heard of the Diggers?" I asked, leaning on my knees. Konekomaru shook his head. "The Diggers is a division that does as the name suggests, digs for information. We infiltrate and execute complex operations that require exorcist level abilities while being disposable. My line of work is very dangerous and most die. It's best to keep these death counts off the books so prospective exorcists won't be scared off." I took a breath and waved him down. He nodded and sat back down. The moron stood next.
"How can you float like that!?" I nearly fell over.
"Are you completely retarded? All of that information and you focus on me floating?" I snapped.
"No, it's just really cool!" He mumbled. Yukio tugged on my sleeve and motioned for me to sit down. I obliged and made my way back to my seat.
"Because of brother's idiotic character, questions will have to continue in your free time."
Bon shot me a concerned look. I ignored him and went back to my thoughts. Class soon ended and I passed Bon by completely. I had to go.
Father was waiting for us at the door. He grinned and twirled that ridiculous umbrella. He ran to me and hugged me. I tried pushing him off but he kept petting my hair.
"Stupid old geezer get offa me!" I gave him one hard push and he bounced away.
"Now, now what kind of talk is that? Be nice to daddy!" He pouted. I glared at him. He talks like he actually cares about me.
"What do you want? Couldn't this have waited?" I bark. He shakes his head and almost skips over to me. "You have a mission my dear Digger!" He sang.
"Again, could have waited." He was really grinding my nerves.
"No, dear daughter it couldn't. Because you are going to take these fine students out on a mission!" My jaw nearly hit the ground.
You've gotta be kidding me!
Okay~ that concludes Chapter Three: "Time Skip! Trauma and Recollection!"
Okay, this chapter just came to me! This was probably the easiest thing I've ever written. When I read the first two chapters again inspiration struck me like lightning. It's been almost as long as the time skip in the story since I've worked on any fanfiction. I plan on keeping this up to date.
Anyway, thank you to those who read this. I know it's been forever, but if any of my previous readers reads this then thank you for being so loyal!
NEXT TIME:
Chapter Four: "Mission: Dangerous!"
Chie's old man is at it with more ridiculous schemes and dangerous tactics. Will Chie make it out alive or will she crumble under the weight of her classmates?
「"Silence is the best weapon you have."」
