Before Giovanni's call and Jay's gym battle, Jessie tried for a mini-vacation.
Between Giovanni's nagging and James' constant worrying, she found herself missing the days when she, Lucy, Meowth, James, and the kids could just fly to Alola or Kalos for the night and play in the ocean and sit on the beach, completely carefree. Nowadays it seemed every time she traveled it was to help transport Team Rocket agents.
She had enough.
She lied in a lounge chair atop the roof and sipped an ice-cold Pina Colada while tropical music played in the background. Ten years ago, they had renovated the flat roof of the hotel to look like an Alolan resort, and thus it became her getaway place. It was the area she and her female Pokémon fled to when all the males in her household were getting on her nerves. Wobbuffet was allowed to join, but only as their personal servant.
"Excuse me, Miss Jessie?" a quiet voice called from the corner.
"Wobbbbbba!"
"Can't you see I'm busy?!" Jessie asked irritably. She sat up in her chair. Her eyes met with those of one of the young hotel workers, a fifteen-year-old boy named Jeru.
"I am so sorry Miss Jessie, but a man named Giovanni dialed the main desk and he said it was an emergency. Mr. James called too and said that he was coming home right away," Jeru squeaked.
Jessie sighed. "Fine. I will give them a call. Now leave."
"Yes, Ma'am!"
Jeru ran down the steps. Jessie pulled a coverup over her bathing suit.
"Giovanni's pissing me off," she ranted. "Patronizing me and James. This better really be an emergency."
"Eevee eve," Acorn agreed.
By the time Jessie and her Pokémon reached the hotel lobby, James had returned with Alex. They were both in beach clothes and covered with fake tattoos and henna. James had taken the squirt to Valencia Island for the night before to check out the rides at Giovanni's theme park (the one they and the twerps personally destroyed about 25 years prior, by accident of course). And they decided to take advantage of the nice hotel and complimentary breakfast buffet.
James ran up to Jessie in a panic the moment he saw her.
"Rumika says there are more of them!" he exclaimed. "A lot more. And…and…"
"Calm down," Jessie replied. "Don't lose your shit in front of Alex."
Alex looked at her curiously. She could tell he was somewhat disturbed by James' panicky attitude, but he clearly didn't understand what was going on.
"One step at a time. What did Giovanni want? " Jessie asked.
"He needs us," James responded.
"Does he need us, or can he use someone else?"
"He needs us and it's urgent."
"Okay…We'll have to leave Alex with Delia."
"That's what I was thinking. Let's get going. I can explain more in the car. Lucy and Meowth are waiting for us along with my Pokémon."
Remy was waiting with their private jet. James buckled Alex in one of the back seats and put a pair of headphones on him. The toddler seemed delighted by this, and James was relieved to see him once again content. James climbed into one of the passenger seats next to Jessie.
"Now explain," she demanded.
"Rumika says that the fusions escaped headquarters," James replied. "They're attacking everyone. Additionally, Mondo and Duplica's expedition discovered a bunch more near Baydon. What's worse is that they seem to be much more violent than the small ones that Giovanni gave us and the twerps. He has agents all over the place trying to capture them with tranquilizers and Pokémon that can use soothing attacks such as Sleep Powder, but that is not why Giovanni called us in particular."
"But you just told me he needed us! We're going to miss Jay's gym battle!"
"I already called Jay…I think he'll understand. We'll find a way to make it up to him."
"We can try, at least…So, why are we rushing to headquarters?"
"Remember the story I told you about why Team Rocket decided to keep me for themselves instead of holding me for ransom when they found me in the snow?"
"Yes, but I don't see how that can possibly be relevant…"
"Well if you recall I am not the only one who is sensitive to auras. Annastasia, Ash, and N are too. Giovanni was talking to N and his mentors, followers, you know, those odd people who hang around him. Together they looked through those books we stole and discovered that those capable of hearing the inner voice of the Pokémon are the only ones capable of being able to tame the fusions. He thinks we are their only hope in ever gaining control, or at least peace, over the fusions."
"But the tranquilizers work. So does Jigglypuff's song, Sleep Powder, I'm sure there's more …"
"…that work temporarily. As soon as they wake, they become violent again. Also, while she was at it, Rumika informed me that the scientists think the fusions are gaining resistance over those mechanisms, so we must find an alternative as soon as possible."
"Are you saying the tranquilizers are no longer working?"
"Eventually they won't. But now it takes more darts to put each one to sleep than it did before. And Jigglypuff's song doesn't put them to sleep for as long. And the fusions can still escape the locked Pokéballs and Masterballs."
"So just lock the Masterballs."
"Resistance. Jessie, they're adapting. Besides, being locked up forever is no way for a living creature to well...live."
"Does this mean Annastasia will be joining us?"
"Delia told Gio to not get her involved. She's young and still trying to figure out how the auras work. Speaking of Annastasia, there is something else that is very important that we discovered in that library."
"About Annastasia?"
"Yes."
"Well, go on, explain."
"Her visions—we think they're being caused by a fusion."
"That doesn't make any sense—she's been having visions for years now—even as a little kid, just the seizures are new…the fusions just came into our lives."
"It does if you think about it. You and Annastasia were attacked right before she was born. Rumika and the other spies discovered some disturbing connections between the Pokémon and technology used in the assaults all those years ago and what was recently discovered in the Baydon lab and the library we infiltrated. They had fusions, Jess, seventeen years ago. That is how they created the technology they had. They used Pokémon. The used Psychic, Dark, and Ghost, types to manipulate objects. It had a lasting effect on her, probably because she was vulnerable at the time. I think that is why Delia wants her to stay away for now. It's for her own protection."
"Then if we get to the bottom of this, Annastasia can be cured of…whatever it's called. The visions."
"That is an entirely different issue. Right now, Giovanni needs me, N, and Ash to try to work with that monster fusion. Some of the researchers believe that it is their leader. If we get it to obey us, then all the other fusions will follow. That would be much more effective than having hundreds of agents running all over Toka trying to collect the escaped creatures."
"Shouldn't we be talking to Annastasia about this? We never hide things from her."
"Now isn't the time—I think we should tell her this in person, not rushed over the phone. And I think Delia should be the one to explain it. She knows more about it than we do."
"I guess that's better."
They settled into silence, then after a while, Jessie said:
"Wait, I can't read auras…I could've stayed at home and then gone to Jay's gym battle. If he only needs you, then why am I here?"
"Um…moral support...?" James mumbled.
"I was in the middle of a tan! And I'm going to miss Jay kicking Misty's ass! I know he's going to pummel that stupid Staryu. Oh, you so owe me!"
"I'm sorry. I suppose we can turn around and fly close enough to Cerulean for Acorn to be able to teleport you there."
"No, we're in a rush, and it sounds like you can use that 'moral support', whatever the fuck that means."
"Thanks."
James looked back at Alex. Poor kid, lucky kid. Not a worry in the world, but his future was in their hands. He had no control or say in anything. Times were so rough now in Kanto, and they were the lucky ones. How can he think of future kids when they were already constantly worried about the ones they already had, even the ones that were not even theirs? Jessie coughed and he looked back towards her.
"And if it turns out you don't need me to go on this incredibly special mission," she started randomly, interrupting his internal thoughts, "I can take Alex somewhere fun."
"Oh, you don't have to. Delia likes to babysit. I bet she would look forward to spending time with Alex, and vice versa," James responded.
"Alex likes me too. And you've been hogging him."
"Interesting…"
"What's interesting?"
"You accuse me of hogging him, but I was just doing all the work to prove to you that I can still handle it. Remember that debate? But now it seems like you are getting jealous like maybe you want a little more involvement."
"Of course, I want to be involved. I don't want you to do all the work… just most of it. And that is only for Alex. If we have another kid, I'm not actually going to make you do all the work, I just want to tell myself that I can count on you—without stressing you out too much."
"Well, you can."
They stared out the plane windows while Alex fell asleep with his headphones on. Jessie reached back, gently removed the headphones, and shut the music down before returning her attention to the distant clouds.
"So, have you made a decision?" James asked.
"No," she replied. "Have you?"
"Yes. Surprise: I haven't changed my mind."
"Even with all your worrying? And the fact that I have been planting manipulating ideas in your head about what it would be like to be free?"
"Remember no regrets? I mean just think of their cute little faces. How can any of those be a regret?"
"They can't be." She was warming up to the idea but not prepared to admit it. "I don't want to talk about this now—we have so many problems it's ridiculous."
"I didn't know we were having problems." James instinctively touched the ring on his finger. "What am I doing wrong, Jess? How can we fix it?"
Jessie noticed his change in tone, nervous fidgeting, and the fact that his eyes were glued to his hands.
"Not marriage problems!" she replied, inadvertently raising her voice. "I mean general life problems. The fact that there are mutant Pokémon that you, the twerp, and mullet man have to whisper to before they destroy the world or some shit like that."
"Oh." James took in a breath of relief. "I suppose now isn't the best time to be thinking about that sort of thing."
"Yeah."
Jessie closed her eyes and pictured Jay with his Cascade Badge in hand. She was about to fall asleep when James shook her arm.
"I just remembered something," he said.
"What?" she replied.
"Other than Ash, none of the twerps know we left!"
"I don't care. I left Wobbuffet behind and he will make sure that they don't twerp up our hotel while we are gone."
XO
Takeshi offered to challenge Misty next. His parents, as well as Iris and Cilan, had made their way from the Pallet House in order to watch their children's gym battles.
"Are both trainers ready?" Yasmine asked Misty and Takeshi.
"Yes," they answered together.
"Awesome. This'll be a three on three battle, yada, yada, you know the rest."
"Yasmine!" Misty exclaimed. "Be professional!"
"Fine…"
She recited the gym rules the proper way, and Misty sent out her first Pokémon, Seadra. Takeshi chose Scyther. His friends and parents cheered for him from the sidelines.
"I hope Scyther does well. Bug-types aren't usually good to use against water Pokémon," June said worriedly.
"Maybe Scyther has some tricks up his sleeve," said Rita.
"What kind of tricks?" Soledad asked.
"Just watch."
"Go Takeshi!" Jocelyn sang.
"Flaaaa feeee!"
June and the others soon joined in.
"Scyther, use Focus Energy!" Takeshi commanded. "Then Lunge!"
"Seadra, use Leer and Waterfall," said Misty.
Seadra's Leer and Waterfall weakened Scyther, but the Lunge took even more from the water-type. Misty gasped in surprise.
"Told ya," said Rita.
"Wow," June sighed. "He's just so impressive, don't you agree?"
"Yes, and you should tell him that."
"I can't, I…just can't."
"Go Takeshi!" the others continued.
"Flaaaaa feee!"
"Scyther, use Leech Life!" Takeshi instructed.
"Seadra, Growl and Leer," Misty retorted. "Then Waterfall. Quickly!"
Scyther was once again too quick for Seadra. After the last three moves missed, Misty had Seadra use Smokescreen.
"Oh no! I didn't know Seadra could use Smokescreen!" Takeshi gasped. "I can't see anything!"
"Scyyyy!" Scyther cried as it covered its eyes.
"Try Lunge!"
Scyther cut through the smoke blindly. Misty used this opportunity to attack. Scyther was thrown into the water. As it struggled to get onto one of the arena's floating platforms, Seadra used a final Waterfall. Scyther was declared unable to battle.
"He was my best chance," Takeshi sighed. "I suppose we shoulda trained more."
"It's okay! You still have two Pokémon!" June called out.
"Yeah…Squirt Gun, still wanna battle for me?"
"Squirt Squirtle!"
Squirt Gun jogged towards the platform and got poised to battle.
"Use Tackle," Takeshi suggested.
"Block with Reflect, then dodge," said Misty.
"Water Pulse!"
"Smokescreen!"
"More Water Pulse!"
"Use Leer, then refresh that Reflect!"
"Use Focus Energy and more Water Pulse!"
After a two-minute brawl, Squirt Gun defeated the Seadra.
"Yay, Takeshi!" Jocelyn cried.
"Flaaa feeee!"
"Well done, Takeshi! You just took down one of her best Pokémon," said Annastasia.
"You were amazing!" June exclaimed.
"Not bad at all," said Soledad.
"Great job, Squirt Gun! I knew you could do it!" Logan cheered.
"Just as we expected!" Lily added.
Next Takeshi took on Misty's Politoad. After a stressful four-minute brawl, there was a double knock out. Annastasia took Squirt Gun from Takeshi while he called out his newly evolved Raticate as his final Pokémon. Misty chose Cloyster.
"It's tied," said Lexi. "Not many people tie with Misty. Takeshi's doing great."
"This match is so exciting. I'm glad for Takeshi," said Soledad.
"He gets better and better," June replied. "Like all of us are."
"Ok Raticate, use Tail Whip and Headbutt!" Takeshi instructed. "And don't forget to dodge everything that comes your way!"
"Ice Beam, Cloyster!" Misty commanded.
Cloyster flew backwards from the attack, causing the Ice Beam to shoot skyward. Misty then had Cloyster use Iron Defense, which reduced the effectiveness of Raticate's moves.
"This is so frustrating!" June whispered anxiously. "I want him to do well!"
"I'm sure he'll think of something," Soledad replied. "If he goes down, it won't be without a fight."
"That's for sure," said Jay.
"Maybe," said Amber.
"Okay, Raticate, since that won't work, try boosting your chances of a critical hit with Focus Energy!"
Even with two critical Headbutts in a row, Raticate's attacks did little damage. Yet Takeshi had Raticate continue to use Headbutt.
"June is right, this battle is frustrating," said Rita. "I just want a result."
"Zoruuu," Zorua agreed.
"He's doing his best," said Annastasia. "And soon the PP of that Headbutt attack's going to run out, and I'm not allowed to restore it during the match—it's up to Takeshi, and I'm not sure if he knows how."
Raticate finally fainted.
"Gym Leader Misty is the winner!" Yasmine declared.
"Oh, I'm sorry Takeshi," June said as Takeshi returned Raticate. "But you and Raticate sure held in there."
"Misty's the greatest water Pokémon trainer in the world, so I am not too shocked," Takeshi replied.
"As I said earlier, I thought I was a great trainer but I still lost plenty of gym battles when I was first getting started," said Nolan. "Including my match with Misty."
"You just need more practice," said Misty. "Work on coming up with alternative strategies for when your opponent's counter you with some unexpected moves. Then you'll have no trouble reaching your goals. And defeating you wasn't at all easy; you gave me a rough time out there."
"You should listen to her," said Amber. "My mom gives loads of advice to trainers and only the ones who follow it end up doing well."
"Exactly."
"Yeah, I know she's right," Takeshi said as he looked to his father. "My dad always says the same thing."
"Because it's universally true that gym leaders know best," Brock replied.
"I hope you decide to come back and have a rematch with me one day," Misty told Takeshi.
"I will. I promise," he replied.
"Well done," said Annastasia. "You're a good trainer, and with more training will come more victories."
She squeezed his hand, as she often did to comfort people, and to her surprise, Takeshi did not turn bright red. He looked into her eyes and then down at the ground.
"Thanks," he whispered.
Annastasia smiled. It was the first time Takeshi spoke to her without blushing, gushing compliments, or stuttering. Rita told her about what she said to him and was glad he got the message without his confidence getting shattered in the process. June noticed the change as well, and her confidence heightened.
"No problem," said Annastasia, adding a hug. "You've come a long way and made me very proud."
Misty turned to June, who was chatting with her family.
"Do you still wanted to go next?" she asked.
"Y-yes," June replied.
"I understand if you don't want to. It's been a long day."
"No, I want to do it. I-I want to get it over with."
"Good. Remember, there's no reason to stress and you have nothing to lose."
"The worst thing that can happen is that your Gyarados goes on a rampage," said Jay.
"I don't have a Gyarados."
"Exactly."
"If you don't get a badge, no big deal, just come back like the others," said Iris. "Ash used to do that all the time—he just doesn't tell people because his ego's too big for that."
"She's not wrong," said Amber.
Misty and June took their places on the trainers' platforms while Yasmine recited the gym rules.
"I choose Omanyte!" Misty announced.
"Go, Bulbasaur!" said June. "Use Vine Whip!"
"Mud Shot, Omanyte!" Misty ordered.
Misty's Pokémon dodged Bulbasaur's whip and shot mud in her face. Bulbasaur washed it and used Vine Whip again. Misty had Omanyte use Rollout, throwing Bulbasaur into the pool. Luckily June had taught him to swim, and the grass-type had no problems battling while submerged.
"An underwater Bulbasaur. That's not something you see every day," said Brock. "She's planned ahead."
"June's got a knack for understanding Pokémon," said Annastasia.
"You're doing great!" her parents cheered.
Jocelyn, Lily, Logan, Jay, and Amber were holding up a poster with her name on it, just like they had done for the other young battlers. Everyone clapped and called her name while the Pokémon chanted. June had Bulbasaur use Leech Seed.
"Yay, June!" Jocelyn cheered.
"Flaaafy!"
"Leech Seed, great idea!" Annastasia called out.
"Lillipup!"
"That's right, Lil-G—you know that move too," said Jay. "Yay, June!"
"How does your puppy know Leech Seed?" Michio asked Annastasia in a whisper.
"Training," she replied.
"Are there move tutors that can hack?"
"If there are then I'm one of them. "Go, June!"
Jocelyn let go of the banner to link arms with Flaafy, and the two of them spun around joyfully as they cheered June on. Michio stepped forward to pick up the slack on the banner. Annastasia smiled and made a mental note of this.
Leech Seed was successfully keeping Bulbasaur's energy stocked, but even with the HP-restoring move she was beginning to run low.
"Ancient Power!" Misty instructed.
Before Omanyte could finish the attack, Bulbasaur knocked it out with Vine Whip.
"June of Saffron City takes round one!" Yasmine declared.
"Congrats, June!" her mother cheered.
"Awesome work coordinating with your Pokémon!" said her father.
"Bulbasaur, Leech Seed is a great move to have," Soledad exclaimed. "You must have worked hard to get it in a slot. That's really cool!"
Bulbasaur bowed as she continued to receive compliments.
"You're so good," said Takeshi. "You have to help me train."
"June and Bulbasaur are the bestest. Hooray!" Jocelyn exclaimed.
"Flaaaa!"
"Nice work," said Misty. "For my next Pokémon, I choose Kingler!"
"Bulbasaur, let's try combination 1," June responded.
Everyone turned to look at Michio.
"June decided to take a page out of Michio's book," Logan remarked.
"Let's hope that's the only page," said Lily.
"Ease up on him," Annastasia told her cousins. "Michio's an accomplished trainer. I want him to help."
'You do?' Michio thought to himself. 'If you said something sooner—'
"Now, combination 2!" June instructed after the combination of Body Slam and Vine Whip left Kingler paralyzed and low on HP.
"I can play that game too," said Misty. "Kingler, combination 7!"
Kingler used Dig, which left Bulbasaur muddy and sore. Before Bulbasaur could compose himself, Kingler used Vice Grip.
"Oh no, Bulbasaur!" June cried.
Yasmine declared Bulbasaur unable to battle.
"I got him," Annastasia said as she took the Pokémon in her arms. "Bleu will make him feel better, don't you worry."
"Thanks, A," June responded. "For my next Pokémon, I pick Tia!"
"Wigglyyy Tuff!" Tia sang as she joined June on the platform.
"Shadowball!"
"Jump in the water and use combination 3," Misty told Kingler.
"Awe, she nicknamed Wigglytuff 'Tia'," said Soledad. "I love it!"
"Me too! That's an excellent name!" Jay agreed. "I wish I was good at picking out names…"
Kingler's combination of Quick Attack and Headbutt had almost no effect on the Wigglytuff, but Tia's Shadowball knocked Kingler out.
"Kingler is unable to battle!" Yasmine announced. "Wow!"
"June, you sure came prepared," Misty commented. "I wish all trainers took my battles seriously. I mean all of you—most gym battles aren't as fun as these ones have been."
"They're good kids," said Nolan.
"What could you expect?" said Lexi.
"Thank you," said June. "I still have a lot to learn though, and I was lucky to find Tia and Bulbasaur."
June's siblings and parents cheered for her as she waved to them from the platform. She waved back. Her nervousness turned to pride.
"So, Misty has one Pokémon left but June still has Tia and one more," said Jay. "Amb, which Pokémon do you think your mom will use?"
"I dunno," Amber replied. "Just watch."
"I bet she's gonna win," said Jocelyn. "Go, June!"
"Flaaaaaaafy!"
"Jocelyn, Flaafy, calm down a little," Annastasia murmured. "I know we all want June to do well but you don't have to scream your brains out."
"I can't help it I'm so excited," Jocelyn sighed.
"Flaa," Flaafy conceded.
"My last Pokémon will be Seaking," said Misty. "Come on out!"
"Tia, Shadowball," June instructed.
"Megahorn! Quickly!"
Seaking leapt out of the water and aimed its horn directly at Tia's stomach. She lost control of the Shadowball. She was thrown into the water.
"It seems like we're going to have to enter the water if we want to defeat Seaking," June told her Pokémon. "Let's do it!"
Tia jumped into the water and used another Shadowball on Seaking. June realized her mistake soon after when her opponent charged at her with incredible speed. With one more Megahorn, Tia was out of the match.
"Oh nooo," June moaned. "I'm sorry Tia—I know you wanted to win…"
"It's okay," Annastasia said as she healed the Wigglytuff. "You still have one more Pokémon."
"I know…but…"
Everyone cheered harder as June released her third and final Pokémon, a Metapod.
"Oh no! What is she thinking?" Soledad sighed. "Scooter can only use String Shot, Harden, and Protect in that form!"
"Shhh. She still has a shot," said Annastasia. "Let's be supportive."
"Don't give up 'till it's over!" Amber shouted.
"Pichuuuu!"
"Go Scooter! Go June!" Jay added.
Everyone turned to look at Jocelyn, who was the only one who didn't scream.
"I lost my voice I think," she croaked.
"Fla uh…"
"Here," Annastasia said as she handed them a potion. "That'll restore your throats. But take it easy; I only have one on me."
"Thanks, Onēsan," Jocelyn replied.
"Fla, Flaafy fla."
Misty had Seaking use Megahorn, Horn Drill, and Aqua Tail on the Cocoon Pokémon, but nothing had any effect against Harden and Protect. About five minutes into the match, when all the cheerleaders were starting to lose their steam, the cocoon started to glow white.
"He's evolving!" June shrieked happily.
"Look, everyone!" Jocelyn shouted.
"Freeeeeeeeee!" Scooter cried as he emerged from the discarded green cocoon.
"I have a Butterfree now!" June laughed.
"Congratulations," said Misty.
June and the others were thrilled to witness Scooter's new moves: Sleep Powder, Gust, Giga Drain, and Quiver Dance.
Despite the evolution, June and Scooter lost.
"I'm sorry that didn't go as you hoped," Cilan said as June descended the platform.
"But You got a Butterfree," said Iris. "I think that's pretty cool."
"Scooter's pretty and cool," said Jay. "I want one."
"Yeah, me too," said Amber.
Takeshi, Soledad, Jocelyn, Flaafy, and even Pip and Jay were surprised by her comment—Amber never seemed the type to appreciate looks for looks.
"They can fly," she added.
"Oh yeah, that makes sense…" her friends mumbled.
"Amber, still a flying enthusiast?" Iris asked.
"Oh yeah," Amber responded. "Any Pokémon that can fly is a good Pokémon."
"Pikaaa," Pip asserted.
"Or a Pikachu."
"Pi:)"
"You can still come by anytime and ride my dragons—this is the longest you've been away. But it's good you're on this journey. It's obvious that you all are learning a lot," said Iris.
"Everyone's been learning a lot," said Soledad.
"I knew I had a good chance of losing," said June. "Because I know that it takes more than just a few weeks for trainers and Pokémon to truly connect and…well, we're on our way…and I'm so happy Scooter evolved! I got a Butterfree!"
"Yay!" Jocelyn screamed. "I love you, Scooter!"
"Flaafy flaaaa!"
"Take it easy," Michio told Jocelyn and Flaafy. "Listen to A; she told you not to scream."
"He called her 'A'," Logan whispered to Lily and several of the kids. "A first."
"I can hear you."
"How?"
"I can hear."
"You called me 'A'," said Annastasia. "It was weird. Do it again, please."
"No," Michio replied. "I just want people to stop screaming."
"Well, as is true with everyone, I am up for rematches," said Misty. "I suggest leveling up some of your Pokémon, try finding types that are strong against water-types: grass-types, electric-types, Pokémon with the move Freeze Dry—and my roster's online. Some of my Pokémon are dual-typed, so keep that in mind when you face future gym leaders. Also finding items for your Pokémon to hold can up your chances of winning."
"Like…uh…dual-typed?" Jay asked. "Uh…I know I should know this."
"A Pokémon with two types," Soledad explained. "Take Tentacool. They are water and poison-type Pokémon."
"If you used your Tentacool in your battle with June, you would've won sooner," said Michio.
"I never pick my team based off my opponents' team in a gym battle," said Misty. "I know June had a Bulbasaur and I know my Tentacool would've been an advantage—and as always, I chose my monz randomly. Omanyte, Kingler, and Seaking happened to have had their numbers pulled."
"You have Pokémon that we haven't seen?" Takeshi asked.
"Of course. I have multiples of every water-type Pokémon native to Kanto, and most that are found around the world."
"How many Tentacool?"
"Three below level twenty, four between levels twenty-one and thirty, two between levels thirty-one and forty, and everyone after that has evolved into Tentacruel."
"Your Bulbasaur is level twenty," Annastasia told June. "Which is why Misty picked Pokémon that were also around level twenty. Does that make sense to everyone?"
The kids nodded.
"In reality, my mom has some of the world's most amazing Pokémon—like Articuno and Lugia—so if she really wanted to—she could kick our assses," said Amber.
"Amb, that's a curse!" Jay gasped.
"Amber, stop trying to be provocative," Misty chided. "It's lame."
Amber crossed her arms and tried not to let that get to her as they exited the gym.
"Off to the Pokémon Center!" Jocelyn cheered.
"Flaaa, Feee!"
