"Oh good, they will put up a sheet so I don't have to see everything..." James thought as he watched the doctors move in fast-forward to start the surgery. He and Maria were told to don scrubs and masks. He watched them start to give Jessie an injection, and quickly looked away.
There was an awkward silence in the room as the doctors started their procedure. Jessie looked at James. "You're not going to watch?" James shot her an incredulous look. Maria kept a serious face as she watched the surgery on the other side of the curtain intently.
James held Jessie's hands in his own, and neither of them spoke. He heard Maria coaching Jessie. Something about feeling "pressure." Then she said "We're bringing the head out...here's the rest." and there was a faint cry that made them both look up in surprise. Maria held a small bundle. "James, are you sure you don't want to come over and hold him while we wait for the cord?"
James gulped and slowly let go of Jessie's hands, standing up. He walked over to Maria, and held his arms out. Maria placed the small bundle in his arms, and helped him position his arms correctly.
The bundle was a small human, eyes barely opened, opening his mouth and letting out a whimper before James instictively held him tight, tears starting to roll down his cheeks.
The little baby smacked his lips, eyes looking but barely able to see anything except for his father's face in front of him.
He heard Jessie growl impatiently. "Why are you all being so quiet over there? Hand me my baby!"
Maria laughed. "Hold on for just one more minute."
Jessie fumed. "At least give me a play-by-play over here! I can't see anything! What does the baby look like?"
James tilted his head quizzically at the question. Then he sighed. "He's...perfect."
"I knew that already. Can you be a little more specific? Like, what color hair does he have?"
James raised an eyebrow. That was a good question. He lifted the cap slightly. "Oh..."
"What?!"
"They're identical...so they'll both have your hair...unfortunately."
"You mean fortunately, right?"
"Yes, of course, my dear."
Maria laughed lightly. "James, would you like to do the honors?" she held up a pair of curved surgical scissors.
James didn't even look over. "No. Thank you."
"Okay then." She clamped the cord, cut it, and redid the swaddle blanket expertly. James walked back over to Jessie, and a nurse helped Jessie hold the baby on her chest.
Their eyes met before both gazing at their newborn son.
"He really is perfect."
"You mean, they are perfect." commented Maria as she bundled the second twin up. "Come and meet his brother now." James walked back over and smiled as Maria handed him his other son. James waited for Maria to clamp and cut the cord again before going back and laying the second the second twin.
They sat together with the twins, looking at them, giggling, the picture of happiness. James awkwardly tried to talk to the twins.
"Hi, I'm your Daddy. And this is your brother...um...Jessie, they don't have names yet."
"Hmm...I know! Let's name them for their gorgeous red hair!" Jessie's eyes sparkled.
James answered flatly. "What if they dye it?"
"And why would they do that?"
"Because lavender's a better color."
"No one wants lavender hair, James."
James pouted and ran a hand through his hair.
Maria laughed. "You know, your mother had thought of naming you for your hair if you were a boy. Because you're a girl, she named you after her mother. She had a whole list of boy names that mean "red"."
James pondered. "Like...Red?"
Jessie gave him a deadpan look. "How original, James."
James pouted.
Maria started for the door. "You two think it over...I'm going to go deliver some good news to your family in the waiting room."
James heard a knock on the door. It was Maria, Nanny, Pop-pop and the pokemon.
Jessie had gotten out of surgery and was resting.
Nanny and Pop-pop gazed at the little ones.
"Congratulations." Pop-pop said softly.
"They're adorable." Nanny whispered.
Meowth stared in awe. "Didja name them yet?"
James sighed. "Still working on it."
Meowth had been reading the baby names book. "Look at dis one!" He exclaimed.
On one page, there was the name "Rowan", the opposite page had the name "Ross".
Jessie and James took the book and looked at it together, and nodded. Rowan and Ross.
Jessie drifted off to sleep, and Nanny, Pop-pop and Maria excused themselves.
"Wait, Chimecho, before you go...Can you use Heal Bell on Jessie?"
The room filled with a blue light, and Jessie smiled in her sleep.
As the sky started to lighten and bring the next day, one of the babies started to whimper and grunt. James wearily picked him up and put him to Jessie's breast as Maria had showed him how. She briefly opened her eyes, looked at James, and the baby, and went back to sleep happily. He smiled, listening to the tiny gulping sounds.
The morning nurse was making her rounds and peeked into the room.
"Wow! Are you sure you've never taken care of babies before?"
"The only babies I've had were my pokemon." James grinned.
"They must be lucky pokemon. You are such a natural." she said, smiling.
"Thank you. I try my best." he said, blushing.
Yes, he thought. I will definitely try my best for these two. Jessie didn't have her parents in her life, or even food to eat. I was treated as a commodity and robbed of my freedom. These two will never have to know that. I don't know if I can be the best parent, but at least I will be there for them, there will always be food, and they will be free to choose whatever path they want.
The little baby on Jessie's breast fell asleep. He quietly kissed him on the forehead and set him back down in his bed.
