Bat's POV
Jace had done many things to anger me before, including stealing my entire drawer of boxers for a week. Explaining that to Maia had gone really well. But this time he crossed a fragile line. No one made my girlfriend do anything, not even me.
I pounded on their door a few times before Clary opened it. In her hand was her history book, a stray pencil sticking out of a messy bun.
"Hey Bat. What do you need?" The human flame seemed to be in a good mood, but the fact I had yet to see Jace meant something. Or was it the way she was standing in the doorway, practically guarding him?
"So, human…, Clary," Maia's warning rang clearly in my head. I wasn't about to piss her off.
"Yeah?" She arched an eyebrow, starting to look annoyed.
"Where is your boyfriend at? I need to speak with him."
From the back of the room I heard footsteps, Clary's eyes rolling as he almost skipped towards us.
"Bat. Did you need to borrow something?" He was shirtless, pressing himself against her back. But what was he hiding?
"Can I come in? It's about this whole Lance situation." It felt like an honest to god set up when Clary moved out of the way, throwing Jace a shirt. But the calm still remained. Not that I was calm myself, but I guess we all were faking it.
Clary perched herself on the edge of Jace's bed, books pushed aside so they both had room to sit. "Bat, I'm sorry we had to involve Maia, really. But she could handle him better and Viper is her cousin."
I stopped her before she could convince me otherwise. "I know that. But I don't see why Jace can't give you up for one night. Was there something that she did not tell me? Because, if there is, I need to know."
Jace looked at her, shrugging. I had been right. Or maybe I was not, but waiting for a response was agony.
Finally, he spoke. "Maia had to of told you everything. Look, I'm sorry we don't have a loop hole for this. A promise is a promise to your kind, and ours if that counts for anything. Unless we can find a willing substitute, we can't make her cancel."
I was about to say something when there was a knock at the door. They just sat on the bed though, making me open it.
Simon stood on the other side, sweating. "I need a quick favor, Clary. Sorry. There's no time to explain. We just need to hurry."
Her face clammed up with worry as soon as he finished. In fact, that was the fastest I'd ever seen her run.
"Okay, let's go. But I need a favor in return. We all do." And they were gone.
Jace continually looked at his phone while we talked, though I suspected he was stalling. But Clary came back eventually, covered in mud from her calves to her feet. She was smiling though.
"Good news: Jordan's truck is now mobile again. Also, we ran into Aline." She paused for a second, stripping off her sneakers and placing them in the bathroom. When she came out she came straight to me. "She is telling Lance right now that she'll sub in for Maia. Your worries are over." Clary rolled her eyes, her grin saying she was trying not to laugh.
I all but ran out of the room, offering my thanks. But I was still in the vicinity to hear Jace telling her that she was not sitting on the bed in her current pants. The door shut before I could hear anymore though.
I just needed to find Maia and tell her the good news.
Jace's POV
Clary stripped out of her jeans while I shut the door. I knew Bat had been mad, and that I could have made it worse because only I could piss someone off that much, but faking it seemed to have helped.
"If you have any undignified comments now is the time to let them out. But I am proud of you for holding back." She looked good in my sweat pants, really good. But I did have a few comments that I held back.
"First off, he has no place in a decision that she made herself. And, really, coming here was a big mistake. What did he expect us to do? She made a promise. Thank god for Aline though."
Clary looked unimpressed though, setting down her history book. "No offense but 1) you had a lot of influence in that decision being that you basically threatened her. And 2) if Bat knew that then he would have probably tried to bite your head off. Also, 3) lusting after the fact that I look good in these pants does not mean I am happy you canceled out my opinion in this situation to begin with. Even if I was never going to go anyway, I have a right to say no myself." She grinned though, kissing the top of my head as I lay on the other side of the bed, propping calculus homework against my knees. "But the fact you protect me is still sweet and I do appreciate it. Just know I can fend for myself, jerk." Then she was lost in her book again, ignoring the outside world.
But she did mumble to herself while doing so, including the words, "getting Aline to agree was too damn difficult. Thank god she owed me a favor. Saved Jace's ass I did."
I was very lucky to have someone who could put up with me. And I would be damned to screw this up.
Alec's POV
Jon decided to go off campus to study while Magnus and I stuck to the on campus coffee shop. Mom had put it in a little over three years ago, seeing that the students needed a place to hang out. But the division among the groups made the place tense most days. A few freshmen crowded the booths, their heads stuck in books, while some seniors hogged the laptop counter.
"You find seats while I get us something to drink?" Magnus was already scouting before I could finish.
"Deal." He sped towards a free table, leaving me in the dust.
When I reached the counter the guy sneered though, daring me to make a complicated order.
"Can I have two medium coffees and a blueberry muffin?"
"That it?" The asshole grumbled, his shoulders visibly relaxing.
It took me a second to pull my ID from my wallet. "Yeah. Here."
He begrudgingly scanned it, surprisingly handing it back with smile.
"You're a Lightwood? Izzy's brother?" Of course he knew who she was.
I nodded, stepping to the side so someone else could order. The last thing I wanted to do was talk to a guy who would obsess over her.
As he handed my order over, he brushed my hand. Something slipped between my fingers when he did.
"You are a lucky guy then. Have a nice night."
I quickly grabbed some cream for Magnus, along with a handful of sugar for both of us. But I still peeked at the card, curious.

Seriously? He was hitting on me of all people. The boy who didn't exactly dress to impress, and was spoken for by someone with a nasty temper.
"You found a table," it took some maneuvering, but I found Magnus in a few minutes.
He looked up from his psych book, grinning. "Got some sugar, sugar?" His eyes rolled before he took the cream from the bag. "So, any big tests this week?"
Don't mention the card, I told myself, just don't. "Yeah. Except it's another writing project. I just need to do my half."
"And how much is your half?" He sipped at his coffee while taking notes, trying to be supportive.
"Five pages, double spaced. It's for a novel of the entire classes stories." Clary's email popped up as soon as I opened my laptop, her five pages already complete. "Looks like she's already done her half."
"Good, good." Magnus had sunk into his work already, probably tuning me out. But that was fine. Two could play at this game.
An hour later something hit me in the head though, of the paper kind no less. Some snickering came from across the room before I looked up, annoyed.
A pack of young werewolf girls sat near us, one of them making another ball, or trying to without my knowledge. I grabbed the first one, trying to smooth out the paper as best I could because wasting it would be a bad idea. Inside, to my surprise, was a note.
It was weird being told that I was quote, "devilishly handsome," this way. But her effort hadn't gone unnoticed, not even by Magnus.
"Love letter?" He didn't look angry at the idea of someone writing me one, not like I would have expected.
There was a moment of silence before I nodded, trying to compress a grin.
"Figured. They've been staring for the better part of the last hour." He seemed more amused than anything.
But Raphael kept looking over. He could have been taking in the situation from behind the counter, but I wasn't sure. We left with little else happening though. I just felt like there was some agenda behind the card exchange, considering I knew of every club and society at the school.
Magnus kept walking as I looked back over my shoulder, eyeing the barista one last time. Something about him caught me off guard, even from outside the place.
Izzy's POV
We got back to campus late, having fallen asleep in the back of the truck. Simon was a mess, saying that he was sorry for falling asleep himself, etc. It was cute more than annoying really.
"Your mom is going to kill us." He kept checking the time as we pulled into the gates. But he never shut up either.
"Simon, curfew starts in ten minutes, it's fine." The blabbering idiot looked relieved when I said it.
As he pulled in a parking spot, he sighed. "I just don't want you to be in trouble. That's all." But he couldn't stop grinning either. "But, think about it, we're rebels."
I could only laugh. "Okay then, rebel, are you not going to walk me to the building?"
We were walking at this point, the main light flickering in front of the dorm building. There was no light coming from our room so I could only imagine someone was in her boyfriend's room.
"Iz, what's up?"
"Nothing, I was just thinking." I squeezed his arm, leaning into his shoulder.
"Okay," Simon seemed to be avoiding asking anything else. His posture at least said that.
When we entered the elevator he tried to ask me something else though. "What do you think will happen when we release stages four and five of our plan onto the school?"
I could only look at him, thinking back on the conversation Alec and I had with our mom.
"In the words of my mother: not that I care, but you all need to be careful. I'm a mother before I am a headmaster, and all of you matter to me as if each and every one of you are my children. I wouldn't want you to get hurt for doing what you think is right."
Simon was quiet for a moment, chewing on his lip.
"We dig our own graves Izzy. But we are not evil. Everything will turn out fine."
I stepped out on our floor, smiling. "I sure hope so. Night."
"Night." His voice faded as the doors closed. I just hoped he was right.
It uploaded! I'm so happy that I can finally give this to you all after the uploading fiasco. Anyway, I'm working on other chapters and have one started for another story. I hope you all enjoy this chapter though.
