Chapter 6
When Emma arrived at the station, she dragged herself from her car and made her way inside. Dropping her keys on her desk, she plopped down into her chair with a sigh. "Alone with my thoughts. This could be dangerous." She stated to the empty room as she leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes. She had a bit of paperwork to do but, honestly, she just got there and had all day, the papers could wait. She wouldn't be able to concentrate on them anyway with all that happened from the morning.
So, Robin was out of the picture. Good. She thought to herself. One down, one to go. Killian. But she inwardly groaned at the thought of having to deal with it. She truly did feel bad for him. He had done everything, sans hitting her over the head and dragging her off like a neanderthal, to get her to admit she loved him, which in her own way she did. She had finally given in to him not long ago, but in doing that… I gave up on her, on us, without even trying. Without even knowing if it could be.
"Ugh." She brought her hands to her face and dragged them down as she leaned forward. Maybe forcing herself into doing the paperwork was better after all. She grabbed a stack of files and opened one, looking over its contents intently.

Hours later, Emma was startled from her deep zone of thought as a bag dropped on her desk. She jumped back with purpose, hand going to where her gun was holstered on her hip, ready to pull it out. "Killian." She sighed a relief, letting out the breath she was holding in and relaxed back in her chair.
"Swan." The pirate smiled at the surprised blonde. "I thought you might be in need of a bite to eat."
Emma glanced around him toward the clock and noticed the time. She didn't realize how long she had been working on the paperwork, her thoughts had kept drifting to Regina from time to time, which had made it a much longer process than it warranted. "Uh, thanks." She took the bag and began opening it to look at the contents inside.
"Also, I thought since you seem to be avoiding me lately, this would be the one place I could catch you, where you couldn't get away." The man stated as he walked around her desk to where she was and sat down on the corner of it.
Emma stopped looking in the bag, and glanced up at him instead. "I'm not avoiding you." Yes, you are. Shut up. She argued with herself. "I've just… been busy trying to control my magic. And… I didn't want to hurt you." That was the truth after all, well part of it anyway.
"I've survived worse things than a troubled swan, love. I think I can handle it." Killian said with a smile and reached in the bag, taking the sandwich out that he had brought for himself.
The blonde sighed and tried to give him him a half smile. Closing the files in front of her, she pushed them them off to the side before pulling her own sandwich out of the bag and began to unwrap it. "Thanks for the lunch, by the way. I didn't realize the time."
Taking a bite of their sandwiches, they both fell into a heavy silence, one Emma could only describe as awkward. You need to tell him. Stealing glances at him, she began to feel queasy and no longer desired to eat. Setting her sandwich down she pushed it away slightly and grabbed her drink instead. Killian noticed and set his own lunch down, shifting to look at her. "Is there something wrong with the sandwich? They said that was your favorite."
"Huh?" Emma gazed up before shaking her head. "No. It's perfect." She looked back down at the food and picked at one of the corners. Tell him!
"Are you ever going to tell me what's wrong?" Killian asked, beginning to get worried. "You've been avoiding me more than usual, and I know it is more than just due to your magic being out of control." He reached out to tilt her chin up so she would look at him.
"I didn't want to hurt you, I honestly do care for you. Just..." Emma moved her chin out of his touch and stood up, needing space to breathe a moment.
"It hurts to see the sadness and pain in your eyes, love. When you look at me." Killian watched the blonde before getting up off the desk and walking over to stand in front of her. When she didn't step away, he brought his hand up to her cheek and cupped it as he placed a tender kiss upon her lips. When she didn't kiss him back he leaned his forehead against hers and closed his eyes. "I'm losing you." It wasn't a question, he just knew as he pulled back to look at her.
"I'm sorry." Emma stated with glistening eyes. She hated having to hurt him. "I do love you, in a way, I just... I have to follow my own heart. And I realized it's..."
"Regina." Killian simply stated as he continued to look at her. He had thought perhaps he had imagined things at times in the past when he'd see them looking at each other. But that had to be the explanation now as to her difference with him.
Emma furrowed her brows. "What?" She began to feel defensive; the brunette had done nothing, it was all her own fault this was happening. "She has done nothing to…"
Killian raised his brow at the outburst before putting his hand on the blonde's shoulder to stop the rant, realizing she had misunderstood his answer as an accusation. "That's not what I meant, love." Emma looked at him with confusion etched upon her face until he continued. "I meant it's her, the whole follow your heart bit. It's the only thing that makes sense."
"What do you mean, it's the only thing that makes sense?" Emma asked. Am I really that transparent? First Granny, now this?
Hook gave her one of his crooked, charming smiles as he moved back a bit to sit on the desk again, reaching out take her hand and pull her to him a bit. "Your excuses tend to revolve around Regina. They always have, even before your magic got out of control yesterday." Emma was about to argue but he shook his head. "When we would have moments to be alone, there would always be an excuse. You needed to call her, to check up on her, or go see her."
"No one was fighting for her. I had to. I…" Emma trailed off and removed her hands from Killian's.
"You love her." Was all Killian said as he watched her. When she said nothing to his statement, he still knew he was right. "Not to say my ego isn't crushed and my heart isn't a tad broken. But I want you happy, Swan." He reached out and caressed her cheek. "I miss seeing your smile, whether it be due to me or not."
Emma regarded him for a few quiet moments before taking both her hands and cupping his face. She leaned in and kissed him with a brush of her lips, then moved her head back caressing her thumbs along his stubble a few times before pulling away. "I'm sorry."
"Well if I have to lose you, I'd rather it be Regina than some other bloke." Killian confessed, causing a light chuckle to bubble up from Emma's throat; it was a bit of a nervous laugh, but also one of relief. It was over, now to just focus on fighting for Regina, from herself.
Killian stood up and brought the blonde into a hug, holding her tight. "Does she know though?" He asked as he moved back a touch to look at her.
"Does she know what?" A familiar husky voice rang out as Regina made her presence known, walking into the room with her brow quirked at the display in front of her. Emma tensed and pulled away from Killian's embrace, quickly shoving her hands in her back pocket. Regina made an inquisitive glance toward the blonde, not at all pleased to find them in an embrace, which caused her jealousy to surface as she gave a disgusted once over to the pirate. "And aren't offenders supposed to be behind the bars? Instead of cozying up to the authority?" She walked the rest of the way in, closing in the gap.
"And what exactly is it that I've supposedly done this time?" Killian asked as he turned toward her.
"Your presence alone offends me." Regina snuffed as she folded her arms, glaring at him.
"Regina." Emma growled in a warning tone. Killian noticed the slightest flinch from the brunette at that, and saw her quickly trying to hide the emotions behind such. Emma seemed to be the only one to be able to do that to her that he knew of. Interesting.
When Regina turned her attentions back to the pirate he had a faint smirk on his face. "What?" She snarled, but he only shook his head and shrugged nonchalantly. "If you don't mind, the sheriff and I have private matters to discuss. Though if you would rather, I am sure I could find something to have her lock you up for."
Killian placed his hand on Emma's shoulder. "I'll see you later, Swan." He leaned in and kissed her cheek before whispering in her ear. "I hope you know what you're getting into." She gave him a soft smile as he went to leave. "Your majesty." He acknowledged toward Regina before stepping around the woman to leave.
Emma waited till she was sure Killian was gone, before turning on Regina. "Was that really necessary?" She asked as she started cleaning up from the lunch.
"Was what?" Regina went back to her casual self, going to the desk and picking up a file.
"You know what." Emma retorted back, snatching the file back from the brunette and putting it back with the others. "You're not exactly mayor anymore, so not sure if your threats hold much." She placed her hands on her desk as she leaned on it. "Jealous much?"
"Well at least I didn't punch someone's significant other across the room. Not that it wasn't tempting." Regina kept her cool demeanor. "And while I may no longer be mayor, I'm still a concerned citizen." She gave the blonde a signature smirk. "Besides, we both know who still runs this town, Emma dear. Who is it again that your mother turns to for advice on the matter?"
Emma huffed in frustration as she pushed off from her desk. "You're so infuriating!" She threw her hands up in the air.
"Yet you still seem quite infatuated with me, Miss Swan." Regina's voice turned into a purr, knowing the effect it would cause. Her smirk only grew when she saw the slight shudder run through the blonde's shoulders.
Emma rolled her eyes in irritation at her own weakness toward the brunette woman. "Yes. Apparently I need my head examined. Why are you here anyway?" She asked, turning to look to her. "Not… that I mind."
"Are you certain of that?" Regina asked, running her finger along the edge of the blonde's desk as she moved around it. "You seemed quite attached to that filthy pirate of yours."
"Would you stop?" Emma asked, her aggravation flaring again. While she completely understood the brunette's temper at seeing such, she still cared for Killian and wanted to stick up for him. "He was wishing me luck." Those words earned a confused look from the brunette, which made Emma try to hold back a smirk. "On fighting for an infuriating, manipulative, jealous, hard-headed woman who I seem... to have feelings for." The blonde punctuated each name with a step closer to the other woman until she was within her personal space. Damn. Wrong move. The brunette's intoxicating smell, that was all her own, and the now close proximity made Emma lose her emotional advantage and train of thought. She shook her head to try and clear it. "I'm sorry, why did you say you were here again?"
A spark of amusement flared in Regina's eyes. "Well I realized, as you so eloquently put it, I am no longer mayor. So I now have time on my hands." She moved away from Emma and noticed the blonde's flustered tenseness release, as she walked over to pick up a picture off the filing cabinet. "I still need to find a cure or such for Marian of course, but…"
"But what?" Emma questioned, pivoting around to look at her when the woman left her thought unfinished.
Setting the photo back down, Regina turned around and leaned against the cabinet in a relaxed fashion. "A certain blonde seems to be on my mind, which makes it quite difficult to concentrate on potions and other things."
"Oh." Emma let out softly as she looked down at the files still to go through on her desk. "Kind of same here."
Regina quirked her brow. "Oh? A blonde on your mind as well?" She loved baiting the other woman.
Emma shot her head up to look at Regina and saw the smirk playing upon her face. "Funny." She stated dryly as she tried to busy herself and began straightening up her desk.
"Well, now that the pirate knows of your true feelings, what is your next plan in seducing, or I believe your words were 'fighting for', this woman you were speaking about?" Regina chuckled as she watched the file fall from the blonde's hands, spilling everywhere, as Emma became flustered at her words.
"Doubtful on the seducing." Emma muttered as she knelt down to pick up all the papers and stuff them back into the file.
"I wouldn't be so sure." Regina pushed off the filing cabinet and began walking slowly over to where the blonde was. "Luring me out to your car, kissing me, confessing your undying love for me." She stopped just in front of Emma as the woman stood up, taking the file from her and setting on the desk.
Emma couldn't help the laugh that came out. "I hardly lured you to my car. You clearly followed me, in a rage if I remember correctly. And I don't believe it was quite undying love that I confessed to you." A small smirk twitching at her lips. Regina returned the smirk with her own as she brought her hand up to Emma's neck and ran her fingers through silky blonde locks, her eyes falling upon the woman's lips. "Who's seducing who now?" Emma asked almost breathlessly, earning a low chuckle from the brunette as Regina moved in the rest of the way to kiss her.
The kiss devoured every part of Emma's soul as she found herself lost in the sweet euphoria of it; Regina's soft lips were demanding, yet tender. The blonde placed her hands on the woman's hips and tugged her closer against her as the kiss deepened, tongues dancing across one another in a slow mesmerizing dance. When the kiss broke it took a few moments for Emma to regain her footing from the lightheadedness it had caused, her grip on Regina's hips tightening until she found herself stable.
"You know, eventually my parents will have to know." Emma commented when she finally found her voice again.
Her hand still playing in the blonde's hair, scratching her scalp lightly in a massaging fashion, Regina smirked as she held Emma's gaze. "I do hope I'm there for that." She stated back, causing the blonde to laugh before Regina kissed her once more. "Shall Henry and I expect you for dinner again this evening?"
"I'd like that." Emma answered with a soft smile, reaching up to straighten the brunette's jacket.
"I'll let you get back to work. Until then." Regina placed a soft chaste kiss upon the blonde's lips before removing her hand and stepping away to make her exit. Just as she opened the door she stopped and turned to glance over her shoulder at the blonde, finding the hazel eyes still fixated upon her. "You may stay again, if you'd like. Unless you prefer other company. But…" She paused, letting her eyes roam over the Emma's body. "Be sure to bring proper sleeping attire this time, or I may have to inform you of clothing removal again." Seeing the redness rise from the blonde's neck to her cheeks in a matter of seconds, Regina's smirk simply grew as she turned and walked out.
