Chapter 2
Started 1/28
I woke up with Toothless slobbering my face. "Ew bud! You know that I'm going to smell like fish for the entire day now. I'm supposed to impress people not repel them with my stench eww," I flicked some of his spit back at his face to emphasize my discouragement. Toothless reacted as he always does when he slobbers me, too happy to care. His eyes shining a bright green, he was looking out the small window of the ships door his excitement was shaking his entire body. I was to be expected we had been traveling non-stop for two days now and if I was feeling a little cramped he must have been feeling it even more.
"Aww it's ok buddy as soon as we settle down we'll go flying together", I told him as I rechecked my compartment and made sure I had all necessary tools. Toothless whined and shook his head in protest. "Sorry but we have to check in the informative I received clearly details the guidelines we have to follow". Toothless stomped his feet against the floor and ran in a circle. "I know I know you want to do it know but we can't. But as soon as we check in we can do whatever you want. How does that sound buddy?", I cooed at Toothless, Toothless tilted his head at me and looked disbelieving at me.
'Landing will commence in 10 minutes please take a seat as the ship will experience turbulence as it enters the atmosphere' female animatronic voice echoed from the ships speakers. Toothless looked delighted and quickly ran back to my side and sat still. I couldn't help but think that for a 160 pound bag of reptilian flesh that had teeth as sharp as daggers he was the cutest thing I have ever seen. "See didn't I say we would be there as soon as could," I said as I scratched at behind his left ear. My nails scraping against his rough scales, they had the similar characteristics of obsidian. Toothless smiled at me and let me continue to scratch he must have been happy if let me do this.
The ship shook as we entered the atmosphere. We looked out window next to me. From our height, we could see that this planet had an ocean and a forest. That was a good sign. That means that there must an abundance of oxygen from the vast amount of trees and carbon levels should be at a stable level if the ocean dissolved excessive carbon levels. At this speed I couldn't see clouds in the atmosphere. But if there was an ocean then there must be rain providing water back to the reservoir. From the small aspects I can make a small synopsis that this planet will provide a stable environment for human life. The question is whether it have suitable foods for Toothless. I was so deep in thought that I didn't notice him leaning over me to look more into the window. His smile spreading farther over his face. "Come on buddy move your crushing me," I whined out as I tried to move his heavy paw from my stomach. He stayed there and continued to stare out. I tried to push him off but I move it I finally gave up. "Fine out of the goodness of my heart you can stay," I said as I crossed my arms. Toothless laughed and looked smugly at me "Hey it's not my fault that I was born with strength of a sick goat." Toothless bumped my head and moved off me. "You didn't have to move."
Toothless ignored me and laid his head on my lap, he breathed out and closed out his eyes. "I'm excited to buddy"
The ship land with a soft thud, the lights that had been powered down for landing flickered back on. Their green light nearly blinding me. Toothless ran to the door and sat intensely staring at it waiting for the chance to jump out.
"Toothless Bud calm down. I have to check if this place is safe for you-"I didn't get to finished because the door suddenly opened the door landing with a sharp crash as it fell on the ground. Toothless took that as a sign to jump out. He ran in a circle and ran off. "TOOTHLESS!" I yelled out as I threw the compartment on. I ran to the door and saw him running to the forest. I jumped off the ship gracefully falling on my stomach. And ran to him. "Toothless stopping running." Toothless continued to run. I tried to catch up but tripped over a large rock. "Damn it!" I grimaced out. I took a look at my prosthetic making sure that it didn't get damaged in the fall. It wasn't as fragile at it had been before after a few modifications it was now able to take a beating.
I felt my back get bushed. When I turned, it was Toothless looked at me worried, "It's fine I just tripped. Don't run off. I have to make sure this place isn't hostile.". Toothless leaned his head down I moved my arms around his neck and he helped me back up. "See still good". He smiled and nuzzled my neck.
I playfully pushed him away. I took a small block from my compartment and kneeled. Toothless started to dig a hole for me. I then put the block inside the hole and moved the piled dirt back over the hole. Toothless then stepped on it to make the dirt firm. I then took out a small circular compass. Well it looked like a compass. It was now a compass that also was capable of finding the temperature. With the help of Toothless fire I was able to find a material that wouldn't melt under excessive heat but also sensitive to find a difference in temperature. This was only capable by the block I placed in the ground that material is easy to be detected by the compass. Depending on how the block interacts with the environment the compass will make a estimate to the planets inner temperature.
"It seems that this planet's ground temperature is close to 80 degrees (26C) that seems a like a high temperature. Be careful buddy with temperatures as high as these then the wildlife may be large", I told Toothless as I gathered my materials back into my compartment. Toothless nodded and proceed to turn to allow me to check his tail. I checked if his tail was in place.
"Alright it's good I checked before you ran out of the ship like a baby sososos were the meeting station is. Lucky for you the meeting area is far from here so-"Toothless jumped up and down, "You got it." I said as I climbed on Toothless back. I clicked my leg into Toothless lever. "Ready buddy?"
Toothless nodded and spread out his large wings. I gripped his neck and prepared myself for when shot. Toothless pushed up and we sprang up with extreme force. The wind blew past us as we flew up. "Yaaaaa!", I screamed enthusiastically out as we made as far as we could go. The view was amazing. Toothless dipped down my stomach flipped as we went down, I laughed out and gripped Toothless tighter. We spent time just us spinning in the air and doing flips. "I missed this Toothless," I said as I leaned onto his head. My chin laying between his ears. He agreed with a quick flap of his wings, "Let's never spend that long on the ground." I laughed out.
I was unsure how long we spent flying. There hadn't been a sign that time had passed. Toothless started to fly smoothly so that I could let go of him. I searched through my compartment and took out my compass. "The coordinates said to go 500 degrees west and 469 degrees south. So go over there bud to the clearing" I said pointing to an open piece of land. Toothless nodded and changed his flying pattern.
"You want to know what's weird. When I was checking the temperature, I noticed a strange measurement. The gravity wasn't as strong as I expected. Usually when something is that high in temperature it has a high gravity, that's the rule. But there it was different. What do you think bud?", I asked as I pet the area behind Toothless' left ear. He responded by puffing out some air. "Yeah I'm not really sure why either?".
We flew over the barren land circling the perimeter.
"Let's land in another place Toothless," I said as I rubbed at his head. Toothless agreed and moved towards a nearby forest. Toothless dived down quickly to get close to the ground flapping his wings to slow us down. The fallen leaves being blown away and landed with a soft thud. I unbuckled myself while Toothless looked.
I moved off.
I heard a rustle of leaves come from behind me. We stilled but nothing came. "It's probably something small bud don't worry about it." I said trying to calm him. Toothless moved toward my touch before he moved his snout. "Aww are you made at me." I teased as I hugged his neck. I landed on the dirt when Toothless shook me off. He grumpily walked to the into the forest. "Hey!" I said as I dusted off my suit "That wasn't very nice. What happened to my sugar marshmallow dragon? This is not the way I raised you bud", I smiled as I carefully walked over a tree root. I clutched at the tree trunk while I moved my prosthetic leg carefully soft ground. "Where did I go wrong?", I said putting my hands on my hips Toothless huffed and continued moving. I laughed as I ran to his side. "Well let's look around and make camp".
The planet seemed calm. The vegetation was quite similar to the ones found in Berk. I was even able to find a common fruit we use in special occasions. We had yet to see any signs of animals. That's what I thought to be most disturbing. Based on the size of the planet, although relatively small and barren, there should be at least a basic form of lifeforms. Yet we've been walking for hours.
"Toothless look there's a small pond over there we might find a some sign of life" I said walking ahead of him. The water was surrounded by small plants that barely made it up to my shin. I kneeled to the pond to closely examine. From here I could see that the water was clear, a think layer of algae set on the bottom. No sign of fish. Not even bottom-feeders. I looked around I noticed that this planet indeed have a large amount of algae located along the floor or dark corners. "How has this planet not been overrun by algae?", I asked myself I brought out a small leather bound pocketbook. I scribbled down at quick synopsis once again I heard a rustle from the trees. I looked over my shoulder to see nothing. Nothing except Toothless scratching at a tree. "Toothless what are you doing?", I asked getting from my knees and walked to him. His sharp teeth showing, ears standing tall and snout scrunched up. "Hey hey Buddy it's fine what's up there?" I asked as I moved close to him and looked up the tree. Toothless snarled and backed down. I calmed glad that he wasn't upset but a rustling in the trees caused him to make a sharp turn. "Buddy!" I yelled out walking towards him I made one step before his tail slapped me across the face. Knocking me into the pond. I sat there mildly shocked from being slapped and thrown into a pond. I sighed and tried to stand up. The algae floor was slippery so my leg couldn't get a holding.
I managed to get to the edge of the pond with little easy my upper chest and hair covered in mud. This day seemed way to long. I felt a bump on my head to see Toothless nudging on my head. His ears folded back and his big green eyes looking at me apologetically. "Come here and get me out" I said doing a gesture to get Toothless towards me. He moved close enough that I was able to properly wrap myself around his neck and torso. Toothless moved back so that he could lay on his hind-legs. He then wrapped his arms around me and waddled to the dry ground.
I stood on the ground and wiped at the mud on my body. Toothless whined. I smirked at threw my mud at him, he responded by sneezing. "That's what you get!" I laughed. He smiled and rubbed at me. I pushed him off "Look at me I'm covered in mud this means you have to get me a bath!", I said smirking. He grumbled at me as I smiled.
I poured the last of the water into a small tub like bath. It was made of boulder that Toothless had shot at causing most of it to be taken off. And what was left was a shell like bath tub. Basic yes but it can hold water so I can clean myself up.
I sat in the bath scrubbing myself with a small towel. Toothless sat next to the shell tub. By now the water was a murky brown.
Toothless perked his ears and stood up. There was a rustling again in the forest. I could tell he wanted to chase the sound but didn't want to leave me unguarded. I smiled and began to move out the tub. Toothless walked over and wrapped one of his wings around me. "I don't know why you need to do that there isn't anyone here?"
He beast came from no where. Big yellow eyes peered down at us a snarl on its face. "Toothless," I said under my breath. The beast looked at me I had yet to make a move. It began to move slowly towards the right, I in response moved to the right Toothless moving with me. We moved circling each other.
The beast looked like an elk, horns extending like branches from a tree its black raven hair caught in a comical arrangement strands hanging messily. His black mane covering more of the beasts face that it made it nearly impossible to actually see it's eyes. Yet all my attention was focused on its tail nearly the size of it's body where the most threatening part of the elk-beast was at the end of its tail. There spikes grew from its nub, as if a porcupine's quills were replaced by swords.
Toothless stood in an aggressive stance similar to a cat before it pounces. Ears flat at his head while his eyes sharpened to keep focused on his target. I moved to grasp at my sword at my hip. It was still in it a beta test and I was unsure if the blade would pop out of the hilt correctly. But I could risk attacking the beast with a untested sword that could either be useless letting the beast attack me or chop off the remaining limb I had. Or let the beast attack us and eat for dinner. With choices like that how can I refuse.
As I was about to grasp the hilt, the beast unleashed a terrible sound. I covered my ears to avoid hearing such shrieks. I turned to see Toothless was doing the same. The beast began to charge. I barely managed to jump out of its way before it crashed at the tree behind me. The beast shook its head before turning towards me again. Before it had a chance to move Toothless jumped on it.
His wings spread open to make him appear more menacing. Based on its fur and mane the beast seemed to belong to the mammalia family. Most likely Cervidae, elks, there are plenty on Berk. But this one was double in size. That would make it belong more in the Equidae famliy, horses. If it is I wouldn't know much about them. I have only seen what they look like from mom's books about Earth. I snapped out of my thoughts when I heard Toothless yell as he was tossed into a tree by the beasts large horns.
"Toothless!", I grabbed at my blade and opened the handle. The sword spinning open. Toothless then shot at the blade as I jumped defensively towards him. In an instant the blade caught on fire. The beast panicked and jumped away. I moved closer the beast waving the flaming sword. Toothless recovered from the throw quickly as he ran beside me his tail curling around me.
I slowly moved closer to the Elkish-horse beast. I needed to move slowly. Based on the physiology any kick from the beasts legs could cause me serious damage. If Toothless went to close the beast its horns seemed strong enough to pin him down so its legs could impact. "Stay back buddy." I said as I slowly moved my right hand to a small pocket in the holster around my waist. Our heartbeats was so loud I barely concentrate. Once I felt cold metal i relaxed. With this I should be able to knock the beast unconscious. I turned the sword at a 3 o'clock angle so that the beast would be distracted by the flames and wouldn't notice that I toss the small metal box.
I moved to the right wanting to flank his left side. But the beast jumped to the that side. I then attempted moving more the the right. But rather than try to block me. The beast turned exposing his entire side. Toothless head began to arch as he opened his mouth to shoot. The beast must have noticed because it jumped on its hind legs nearly doubling its height. Udders? The beast had Udders? But that would make it..
"A female?", I whispered out. "Toothless wait! Don't shoot!" I screamed. At that moment the sword blew. My hand flung back luckily without damage. Guess that means I need to rewire the springs. But the beast jumped back its, her body bent to cover a small bush. Her neck was bent snarling at me her ears were turned away from me. She could bite if approached to closely.
My brain was scattered trying so hard to remember everything I could about female horse or elks. What were their behavior patterns? Means to attack? Anything so I could understand? I didn't want to hurt her. She didn't seem very dangerous. If she had she would have attacked without hindsight. But so far every move she made was calculated and she would stay relatively close to that one spot. Her udders from what I was able to glimpse. Seemed swollen. Typically female mammals would feed through there.
I put the box back into a holster pocket. I removed my gloves and helmet. "Toothless calmed down. I need you move away from me." Toothless shook his head. I turned completely leaving my back to the beast, I moved my hand gently down his head. "It's ok. Trust me."
I took a minute from him to listen as be backed away from me. But he still was ready to pounce. When I turned to the beast she was back to her normal stance. Her ears weren't flat against her head anymore that's good but now they were sticking out like satellites. She was alert of anything happened. I moved slowly to her. My hands open so she could see my palms. She looked at me but she didn't attack that was good.
Once I got to close for her liking she snorted and pounced her back legs. I stopped. Toothless still waited for my signal for danger. I reached down and clipped my holster dropping it to the ground. She stopped her pouncing. I slowly began to turn left hand so that my palm was facing upward and not towards her, while the right remained the same. I looked straight into her brown eyes. I could see myself reflecting off her pupils. I lowered my head while maintaining eye-contact.
Slowly I managed to get closer enough to her that I could feel her breathe. My hand inches away from her head. I stopped there and looked at her. I had done what I could to trust her now it was her turn. She stood tall. Her eyes looking at me and at Toothless. She and I both knew at this distance a hit from her could cause serious damage most likely death. So she must now that me taking the chance to be this close to her had to mean something else.
She moved closer to me. Her horns surrounding my head. Her eyes never left mine. Then she slowly closed her eyes and pressed forward. I could feel her warmth under the palm of my hand. I was sure she could feel my heartbeat. She then moved away from me. Her once menacing stance turned relaxed. I smiled and turned to Toothless. He too had calmed down as he stopped snarling.
I moved to pet her mane, "My name is Hiccup. His is Toothless. What is yours?"
She turned to the bushes and began to gently hit at the top, I kneeled to have a better look. there lay a small little elk-horse thing. "I'm guessing that's your baby?". She nodded at me as then lowered her head and licked at her baby's head. The small bab opened it mouth in what I assumed to be a neigh but what came out was a squeak. Just like the baby dragons on Berk.
The baby noticed me as it attempted to get on its legs. But just fell down. Know wonder she was so insistent on protecting this bush. The baby could barely stand. I sat down and took my pack off. I took out a book and a single pencil as I began to sketch them.
I spent an hour sitting and drawing the two. I also wrote down their behavior patterns and eating habits. Toothless seemed to take a liking to the baby and would jump run back and forth bringing the baby little flowers he found in the woods. The baby didn't mind and would eat anything Toothless brought. His mother sitting a distance away looking to make sure Toothless didn't feed him anything poisons I guess. With a last curve to the horn. I was done.
On this page would forever be the elk beast mother and her baby.
Soon the day was over. And she picked her baby up with her horns and walked away in to the dark forest.
"Someday Buddy." I laughed as I walked beside Toothless. "We spent all day with them and didn't find a single base. Some tracker you turned out to be."
Toothless bumped his head against mine in protest, "Sure you did something. By something just head a barrels worth of flowers to a baby elk-horse. If Astrid saw us she would say I wasn't giving you enough affection". Toothless rolled his eyes and huffed. "Oh so you do want more affection? Is that it?" I teased as I began to climb on Toothless neck. He shook to get me off, "Nope! I will stay here till you feel properly loved." I laughed as his shakes got slightly stronger.
Toothless gave up and sat grumpily on the ground. I moved and leaned against his neck. I pushed till my upper body was leaning over Toothless' upper part of his head. I looked at Toothless upside down. "Do you feel love yet?" I asked. Toothless was a giant baby. His face looked annoyed but from the shine of his eye I could tell that he was happy. I smiled back at him.
We both tensed when we felt the earth shake under us. The ground opened underneath Toothless. We had a moment to look at each other before Toothless fell screaming. "TOOTHLESS!", I yelled as I jumped in after him. He was spiraling out of control. I stretched as far as I could to reach for him. "Toothless stop panicking. You're making this worse.", I screamed at his over panicking I was close to him just a bit more I could reach him. Toothless maneuvered his body towards opening his wings to make room on his back so I could get on. He unintentionally smack me across the face with his tail. "Toothless!" I said as I was forced farther away from him.
I looked down to see a circulating light getting bigger. In a panic I smacked my black bracelet around my wrist. As the watch began to glow an intense green the collar around Toothless's neck began to glow simultaneously. I was then tugged to Toothless, the watch instantly connecting to his collar. I then clicked my leg in place. Toothless tail fell into place. We stabilized and tilted down. Toothless pulled his wings in avoid hitting the walls.
The light grew even brighter. "Toothless shoot!", I yelled. Toothless shot his beam at down toward the light. A crash was heard. We then flew through the opening. Toothless suddenly stopped. I then flew off his back. The bracelet cracking off my wrist. I landed not to graciously on concrete floor. Toothless yelled and ran towards me. He looked over, his big eyes covering my view of our surroundings he worriedly began to sniff around my stomach and around my neck. I moved my hand to stroke the underside of his head, "I'm fine Toothless, "I whispered to him hoping to comfort him. His comforting soon ended and he began to slobber all over me again, "Ugh! No! Stop it! Toothless!", I laughed as his tongue licked over face. He moved back to look at his work and then proceed to jump for joy. "Well I'm glad my misery has made you happy" I said as I wiped saliva from my eye. Once I did I noticed that we weren't alone anymore. I felt my blood turn cold, from the corner of my Toothless must have felt the same thing because he stopped leaping. He lowered his body and lifted his wings as backed up towards me. I jumped up and ran to cover his tail my hand hovered my small pocket. The room although dark we were able to see eyes peering at us.
"Welcome Hiccup and Toothless I'm glad you were able find us." A voice boomed behind me. Toothless lowered his wings and bared his teeth. My muscles tensed I looked to Toothless in the corner of my eye I needed to see who ever was talking to us. In the reflection of Toothless green eyes I could see a figure standing by an elegant looking chair.
I lower my hand to a top small bulge at my side. "You both exceed expectations finding the tunnel earlier than most".
The figure began to walk down steps, "Now that you have arrived we can make you comfortable"
I turned at threw a small packet. Toothless shot a fire ball. And wrapped himself around me. Smoke engulfed us I then
"Forgive me for startling you both. I forget that you come from a race of Warriors do you not Hiccup"
"Yeah well I'm really the poster boy for the Viking race." I smiled
She hummed with agreement, "Well then I welcome you."
"As you step down there will be a small box filled with a form, necessities such as toiletries, and more I suggest you do a through search. Thank you for joining us"
