~ Little did she know that a certain red-haired figure was watching her quietly from a safe distance… ~

81) Sea

The sounds of the waves hitting the shore always managed to calm Aqua down, no matter how stressed she was. In fact, before she had started dating Vanitas, she used to come here at night too sometimes (that had stopped back when she'd started fearing Vanitas because of Kairi's stories about him).

It made her think of better times. At days like these she would long for the past, when everything had been so simple. Terra and Ven used to joke that she was a Daughter of the Sea, whatever that meant. Well, she certainly had the right haircolor for that role.

The pretty bluenette was all alone at the beach, sitting on the sandy surface to watch the sunset. As peaceful as the sound of the waving palmtrees and feisty seagulls in the background were, the bluenette certainly hoped that waiting for Kairi wouldn't take too long, since she had decided to meet up here with Leon after this. Her friend would come to her for a change. They hadn't seen each other for too long.

Once again, Aqua closed her eyes and foused on the calming sounds of the ocean, for this place held so many memories for her, both good and bad. Little did she know that a certain red-haired figure was watching her quietly from a safe distance…

This figure approached her carefully and ever so slowly, so as not to get caught. When Kairi was standing so close to the woman that she hated that she could touch Aqua if she'd wanted to, she hesitated. Because honestly, what was she going to get out of this meeting? The harm had been done already and no matter what the redhead did, she could never change the past or make it go away somehow. It was a bit too obvious to her now that Aqua still had feelings for her childhood friend.

That thought shook Kairi to the core. Before she could form any coherent thoughts, she'd pushed against Aqua's back with all her might. The latter had obviously not expected this, and she fell over from the impact of the blow after a rather uncharacteristic yelp escaped her lips.

Aqua's eyes made contact with a sharp piece of seashell. Almost immediately, she felt a nerve-wracking pain from her right eye. As she screamed from the unbearable pain, her hand automatically shot to her hurt eye, where she could feel blood gushing out of it. Someone next to her let out a shocked gasp at the sight.

Aqua was quick to react; she grabbed that person's leg and begged them to help her, to bring her to a doctor. Anything to stop the pain. Unfortunately for Aqua, the stranger was doing their best to pry themselves off her firm grasp. Aqua dug her nails into the fabric of their coat. With one last tug, Kairi managed to free herself and run away without as much as saying a word.

Aqua fell back onto the sand and didn't try to get up again. Kairi didn't dare to look back at the damage that she had caused on the beach. It had never been her intention to hurt Aqua that much. Sure, a couple of bruises would have made Kairi's day, as well as a broken nose or a few missing teeth to make the bluenette ugly. But making her lose her sight, or even worse: her whole eye? A shiver ran down her spine just thinking about the way that Aqua's blood had given the sand a dark-red color.

Kairi stopped running after a while, so that people would stop looking at her. Did she look like a guilty person to others? She checked her reflection in the window of a car, but couldn't find anything strange on her, save for the fact that Aqua had managed to rip her coat on one side.

The red-haired woman took a deep breath, before deciding to dump the coat in the nearest bin she could find. She wasn't sure what compelled her to do this, but it did manage to make her feel calmer, and more in control. And if someone asked, she could say that she'd run late, and by the time she had arrived at the beach, Aqua had been long gone.

No one had to find out about this.

A/N: I didn't really like writing this chapter, simply because I can't see Kairi do this. On the other hand, I'm trying to show that accidents can happen to anyone. It's how you act to them that makes a difference.

Next chapter: This was the last drop.
