93) Vicious

Zack turned out to be all right after all; it had just been a random madman who had attacked him, waiting for their first victim in a dark alley. Thankfully, none of his organs were damaged, since the culprit had only managed to stab him in his upperarm.

The next day, when nothing else was on Aqua's mind, she had decided to pay a visit to Vanitas to talk to him. Zeus knew they needed a conversation. Perhaps it was time to choose. It was better to get it over with now, even though she had no idea what to tell him. Maybe she would know as soon as she saw him. At least, that was what the blue-haired woman was hoping for.

Little did Aqua know that in the meantime, Xion was in Vanitas' bedroom as well, staring quietly at her ex-lover.

"Are you gonna tell me what the hell you're doing here or what?" Vanitas demanded coldly.

When Xion finally gathered enough courage to speak, she asked softly, "How did you get your black eye?"

She was about to touch his face, when Vanitas slapped her hand away. "That is none of your business. Now get out!"

Of course, Xion didn't listen. Her cobalt-colored eyes travelled across his slightly messy room randomly, until they fell on something quite familiar. Upon closer expection, it turned out to be one of the sweaters that she had given to him for his birthday, a long time ago.

"What are you grinning about? You look stupid."

Xion had expected for Vanitas to sound hositle. Still, she wasn't going to let that get to her.

"You actually kept one of my sweaters! You still care, don't you?"

Vanitas silently took the aforementioned sweater that was thrown carelessly on the floor, walked over to the window, before opening it and throwing the sweater outside to prove his point that she wasn an unwelcome guest that he couldn't care any less about.

Aqua, who could see Vanitas' house from where she was standing, suddenly noticed how one of the windows from upstairs were opened. She guessed that that was where Vanitas' room was located. Next, she saw from that distance how something black was thrown out of that window. It landed on the front yard.

Once the bluenette was close enough, she picked the item up. At the same time, the nurse who had taken care of her in the hospital, opened the front door and left the house. Her head was hanging in shame (or sadness?). Aqua quickly hid behind the corner of the house until the nurse was gone. In her haste, she had dropped the sweater, who was now being picked up by the nurse.

Why was she taking the sweater with her? Did it belong to her?

When the coast was clear, Aqua walked to the front door, and rang the doorbell. Vanitas opened the front door almost immediately, looking at her so viciously that Aqua subconsciously stepped back from the door. When he saw that it was only Aqua, his eyes softened again.

"Hey, come on in," was all he said.

He stepped aside to let Aqua go through.

Aqua took a deep breath; it was time to confront her boyfriend with everything…including his secret encounter with the nurse.

Aqua decided to be as direct as she could about everything. "Was that Xion?"

Vanitas, seemingly taken aback by her approach, cleared his throat. "Yeah. But don't worry, we're history. I don't want to have anything to do with her."

"Alright. What happened to your eye? Were you in a fight?"

"…Yeah. Sora and I had a disagreement of some sort."

Aqua felt like that last part was a lie, so she tested her theory by asking for clarification. So Vanitas suddenly had a black eye and he kept dodging all the questions that were related to its cause. That could only mean one thing…

"Did Zack hit you?"

It was out before she could stop it, but judging by that look on his face, she was on the right track.

"How could you, Vanitas!"

"Okay, okay. I'll admit, hurting Zack was a mistake. It was actually meant f-"

He stopped mid-sentence. Aqua's eyes narrowed suspiciously.

"It was meant for whom? …Terra?"

His face said everything; the slightly parted lips, the widening of his eyes.

When she finally managed to get the truth out of him, it was her turn to become vicious. "I don't want to see you ever again! Consider us history too!"

"Aqua, wait!"

But she didn't listen and stormed out of the house in blind rage before he had a chance to stop her.

"Dammit!"

A/N: Next chapter: He rolled his eyes at that, the beginnings of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "You'd be surprised at my skills…"
