Chapter 8: Just the Waiting

Sirens and horns sounded through the city, people cursing and throwing sign language out of their car windows. Another day in the big apple, full of chaos and violence. People were trying to get home after a hard day of work, some fortunate for using their legs, others not so fortunate as they were stuck in cars. It was a warm day too, surely not helping the drivers. It had just gone 6 pm, which was the normal rush hour in New York. The sun was beginning to fade, the moon ready to take over for the night shift.

It had been 3 months since Mystic Falls and all the drama had been left behind. No contact, no word or anything from the town that once was. The brunette smiled at her doorman as he opened the door for her and she stepped through. A lot had changed since leaving Mystic Falls. She had changed, her view on life had changed. She was a new woman, looking at a new world.

Walking across the lobby, she sighed in relief as the familiar scent of roses hit her. It was always nice to get home. Getting into the elevator, she pressed the button for her floor and leaned back against the steel wall, closing her eyes for the first time today. Damon was away on business and no, not the same business. Elena told him to keep on going with it and all he replied was that no women was better company than her. At the time, she was embarrassed, but now thinking back, she swoons in awe. He now ran the company, which still brought in good money for him. They had become so much closer than she would have ever thought possible. After two months of being in a relationship, Damon asked her to move in with him and she couldn't refuse because she was so smitten. Now just being a month today that they have lived together; it's going smoothly as can be expected.

Hearing the elevator ding, she opened her eyes as she seen the long corridor that she was growing familiar to. Smiling, she stepped out of the elevator and dragged her feet along the carpet until she came to a stop at her door. Unlocking it, she walked inside and kicked the door shut behind her. Damon had been gone a week already, another week until he was back. They talk every morning and night. The funny thing is, they hadn't even had sex yet.

"Home sweet home." Elena purred, sliding her heels off as she rubbed her feet against the red fluffy carpet, trying to calm the pain. Boy did she hate heels.

"Indeed it is a sweet home."

Swiveling around, she went wide-eyed as she seen Stefan sitting comfortably on the couch, his legs crossed. Grinning, he looked her over and wolf whistled, before taking a look around the apartment. Feeling her heart race, she looked over to the phone, inching closer to it.

"I wouldn't bother, I already unplugged it when I got in." Stefan licked his lips.
"What do you want?" She questioned, crossing her arms.
"To talk, is that a problem?"
"Considering you came ALL the way from Mystic Falls to talk, yes."
"Well, you wouldn't pick up the phone, so I had no other option, did I?"
"Uh, yes you did, leaving ME alone. I do not want to be associated-"

"With me?" He laughed, rolling his eyes, "Are you not wondering about Mystic Falls?"
"No, I'm not. It's not my home anymore, I've left it behind along with YOU."
"Well, that's a shame. We all miss you, I miss you."
"What?" She scoffed, "Don't tell me they're actually talking to you? Seriously?"
"No, thanks to you that is. Then you take off with MY replacement."
"YOUR replacement? You have got to be kidding me! He is MORE of a man than YOU ever were!"

Stefan's eyes grew cold as he pushed himself up from the couch, Elena moving back in the process, fear crossing her eyes. Moving towards her, he caged her against the wall, staring down at her as she swallowed the lump growing in her throat.

"I gave you everything, remember that."
"What? A broken heart and a bigger problem to deal with when you left?" Elena snapped.
"What bigger problem?" Stefan frowned.
"N...nothing, just ignore me." She rushed out, avoiding his stare.
"What...bigger problem Elena? Tell me!"
"I-" Closing her eyes, she inhaled, "I was pregnant."

"W...what?" He moved back, shock clear in his eyes.
"I was-"
"Was!? Why was!?"
"I miscarried." The brunette looked away, tears in her eyes.
"You lost our baby?"
"What?" She looked up, tears falling, "Not on purpose!"
"You just amaze me," He shook his head, "Just because it was mine."

Elena felt sick to the pit of her stomach and watched as Stefan walked towards the door, a menace laugh erupting from him. He turned to her as tears fell from her eyes, her chest growing pain with every passing second. It wasn't fair that he was blaming her, behaving like he was. She didn't do it on purpose, she wouldn't. It would've been hers too, not only his.

"You make ME look like the bad guy and its you. You are the cold heartless bitch. Everyone thinks your perfect and innocent, but no, you're the opposite. YOU owe me a baby and I'll be getting it."

He gave her a look, storming out as he slammed the door shut. Elena burst into sobs and covered her face, her stomach in knots as she slowly sat on the couch. Such a cruel bastard. Just cruel. Sniffing, she held her chest and took deep breaths, while tucking her hair behind her ear. Hearing her phone spring to life, she grabbed her cell from her bag, pulling it out and answering it.

"Hey, I couldn't get through the phone, is it broken?"

Elena swallowed as she heard Damon's voice flood through the speaker. Rubbing her throat, she closed her eyes.

"Uhm," She tried keeping her voice normal, "I must of knocked the plug."
"Lena, what's wrong?" Damon questioned.
"Nothing."
"Elena-"
"I said nothing!" She snapped.
"Hmm."

"I'm sorry." She began sobbing again and rubbed her face.
"Hey, shhh, what's wrong? Talk to me."
"I need you," She whimpered, "Stefan was here."
"I'm on my way home."

The line went dead as she slowly put the phone down and took a shaky breath. What was she going to do? Leaning back, she watched the time tick by. When Damon got back, it was time for the truth, the whole truth. Everything was going to come out and be laid on the table. Now, just the waiting.
