Chapter 12: Turning for the Worse
The atmosphere within the bathroom was hostile, Damon glaring over at Stefan, anger and fury burning in his eyes. Elena stood behind Damon, her hand on his bicep as she was trying to calm him. Stefan stood smirking, his eyes on Elena as she rolled her eyes in disgust and pressed up against Damon's back. The party in the background was in full swing, everyone gossiping and drinking, the bar being drained by the second.
"You have some nerve acting cool and careless around me!" Damon snapped.
"Damon, leave it." Elena cooed into his ear softly.
"I'm sorry, have I upset you in a way that I don't yet acknowledge?"
"I'll give you something to acknowledge!" He barked at him.
Damon moved forward to swing at him, but Elena jumped in front of him and held him back, placing her hands on his chest as he glared over at Stefan who was laughing. Elena looked over her shoulder to glare at him as he raised his hands in defense and continued laughing, a grin on his face.
"Where's the fire? Elena you need to keep that one on a leash."
"What the hell is going on in here!?" Miranda stormed in, looking at the three of them.
"He-" Elena started.
"I don't care Elena! There will be NO fighting at this party!"
"But-"
"We will discuss this later!" She snapped, leaving the room again.
"Ah, this has been fun. See you later Lena." Stefan winked, walking out.
"Bloody dick!" Damon hissed.
"Hey." Elena cupped his face in her hands and stroked her thumbs along his cheeks.
"God, if I get my hands on him."
"Calm down, alright? Deep breath." Elena smiled softly.
"I'm calm, I promise." He laughed, leaning down and kissed her nose, "Sorry."
"Oh, don't be. BIG turn on." She grinned, biting her lip.
"Oh really?" He smirked, pulling her against him.
"Oi, be good." She laughed, "We got a party to return to."
"Awh, but come on."
"Be good and we will see what happens later." She smirked.
"Oooh, I like those odds."
Laughing, Elena dragged him out of the bathroom and down the hall, frowning when she seen Stefan with Klaus and Caroline. Shaking her head, she walked into the kitchen with Damon, smiling when she see Jeremy and Bonnie. Damon took a seat on the stool, opening up a cider as he took a gulp and Elena grabbed herself a bottle of water.
"What happened to you two?" Bonnie raised an eyebrow.
"Mom and Stefan happened." Elena rolled her eyes, "She wants to talk later."
"About what?" Jeremy questioned.
"Only time will tell."
The house was empty, glasses and plates sitting around, left over from the party. Elena and Bonnie were collecting them and piling them into the kitchen sink, which would save them the trouble later. Stretching, Elena stepped into the garden, smiling when she seen Jeremy and Damon talking away. Walking over, she raised an eyebrow.
"What are we talking about over here, huh?"
"You." Damon smirked, wiggling his eyebrows.
"You better not be." Elena poked him.
"Elena!" Miranda called out, ushering her in as she disappeared back inside.
"Here goes nothing."
Damon gave her a grin, pulling her close to him as she wrapped her around his waist and snuggled into him, both of them heading inside to the living room, Jeremy close behind. They seen Klaus and Caroline on the couch as Stefan was leaning against the wall, his arms crossed and a smirk on his face. Bonnie walked in from the kitchen, standing beside Jeremy as Grayson looked over at Miranda, an eyebrow raised in question.
"Right, what is going on?" Miranda looked from Elena to Stefan.
"You're kidding right? You know exactly what's going on!"
"Don't take that tone with me Elena Gilbert!"
"No mom. I will! You find out that Stefan cheated on me with MY best friend and you act like it's no big deal and welcome him with open arms, while you give me grief about it!"
"Hmm." Stefan laughed, shaking his head.
"What's so funny?" Elena glared at him.
"She didn't just find out Elena."
"Huh? Excuse me?" She gave her mom a look, her gaze moving back to Stefan.
"She knew about the affair when I finished it with you." He shrugged like it was no big deal.
"What?" Elena looked over at her mom, swallowing.
"Ah...and since it looks like your parents aren't going to be doing the talking, I'll tell you the reason I'm welcome."
"Stefan, no." Miranda frowned, pain in her eyes.
"No Stefan, please...go on." Elena crossed her arms, holding her breath.
"You see Elena, when we were dating...I came across some information about you, about your parents."
"Cut to the point jackass." Damon cut in, glaring at him as he watched Elena.
"Hmm, my friend works with the police, I got him to do some research for me. Check up on you."
"Really mom? You made him welcome because you have a secret, this is ridiculous!"
"Elena-" Her mom whispered, pain laced in her voice, causing Elena to frown.
"What? Are you trying to say that my parents are top international spies or something?" Elena forced a laugh.
"Ah, you know what would make that even funnier?"
"What's that?" She raised an eyebrow, giving him a look with a sweet smile on her face.
"If they were your parents."
"Uh-" Elena frowned, looking from her parents to Stefan, "I'm sorry, what...?"
"They are NOT your parents. You are adopted."
The room went silent, deadly silent. So quiet that you would be able to hear a pin drop, but nothing. Elena stood there, her whole body turning numb as she stared at Stefan, her gaze slowly moving over to her mom who was looking away, tears in her eyes, the truth shining brighter than the sun. Caroline looked down, biting her lip as Klaus was just in as much shock as the rest of them. Damon was looking from Elena to Stefan as he moved closer to the brunette, not knowing how she was taking this at the moment. Jeremy stared in disbelief, looking at Elena as he raised an eyebrow.
"As for Caroline, she was a package deal. Does that answer your question? Me and Caroline are accepted by your 'parents' because they wanted to protect their sweet baby Elena from finding out the truth."
Elena stared up at Stefan, tears pooling and drowning her chocolate-brown eyes as a sob slipped from her and she rushed out, running out the front door. Damon glared at Stefan, swinging his fist as it crashed into his jaw with a sickening crack. Stefan keeled over, groaning as Damon rushed out after Elena. Looks like the weekend was turning for the worse.
