ROBERTS POV
Johanna called another meeting.
"What's happening now?" whispered Joy, as we sat by the roots of the tree.
"I bet that Johanna's going to give us more jobs," said Nick.
"What jobs would she even give us? No offense or anything, but sixteen-year-olds aren't the most powerful people here," said Verity. Charity nodded, avoiding everyones eyes.
"I'm seventeen," said Nick, obviously trying to push Verity's buttons.
"Just shut up!" she said. "Please," she added.
"Hey, didn't you guys have one more sister? Not to be nosey or anything," asked my sister.
"Oh yeah. She's taking care of her friend Peter's sister. Peter went outside the fence," explained Charity. Everyone nodded.
"Maybe we'll just try and recruit more people for the Allegiant," I suggested, breaking the silence.
"How are we supposed to do that? Hang posters? This place is crawling with Factionless!" said Madi.
"We could somehow drug all of them with the Amity drug! Maybe put it in the water supply or something," mused Stella.
"Um, I don't think that would work too well," said my sister, who was trying to get used to life away from home.
"Oh come on it was a joke! Sort of," said Stella, shoving her shoulder, good-naturedly, causing Susan to almost fall over.
"Ha. Sorry," said Stella, rubbing her neck.
Just then, Johanna walked to the front of the room, in the roots of the tree and raised her hands in her usual way.
"Thank you," she said, after everyone quieted down. "First off, bringing those Dauntless past the fence was a success," she said. Everyone smiled.
"Now, we can't have this organization without order. All of you will have a choice of what job you will take part in," she said.
I heard mutters of 'Jobs? What jobs?' Which Johanna quieted down by lifting her arms.
"Thank you. You have the choice of recruiting new members from the Allegiant, negotiating with the Factionless and any other... difficult people. You can become a strategist and also create what would be called propaganda, through pictures or writing, to convince people of certain ideas, or join the guard," she said. "But there is one more thing. All of you have the chance of being appointed to help Divergents escape from radicals who sill want them dead."
People began excitedly talking to one another.
"Wait, so after all this time, after everything that's happened, people still are worrying about whether they're being 'endangered' by Divergents?" I said to Marco.
"I thought they might have other, better things to worry about now. Like the fact that their entire life is a lie," said Marco, rolling his eyes.
"I know! It's how some girls care so much about how their hair looks right before they jump out of a train!" said Verity. Both of us stared at her blankly.
"Of course. You both are boys," she said, rolling her eyes.
"Okay whatever, that's besides the point," said Marco.
"What job do you guys want?" I asked.
"Negotiation. I can seduce people with my stunning beauty!" said Verity, flipping her hair.
"Wait what?" I asked.
"Oh my goodness it was a joke!" she said.
"Well, I would want to help recruit new people," said Marco.
"Yeah, that seemed like a good option." I said.
I glanced over at Johanna who's arms were raised again. I shut my mouth quickly. It seemed like she had been standing there like that for a while.
"All of you will sign up for one job on one of these," she said, holding up a clipboard with a paper and pencil. She nodded to everyone. People started to stand up and make their way towards people with clipboards.
"Now we'll actually be doing something! Isn't that wonderful?" whispered Susan to me.
"Yeah. Like real Abnegationers," I said. (I STOLE YOUR WORD QuinnDeRavensborough!)
"I bet that... I bet mom and dad would be happy," she said, smiling at the memory of our parents, who had died in the attack on Abnegation.
I nodded. Even though they were gone, I still hoped that they were proud.
Finally, I got to a clipboard.
Robert Black~ Recruiting. I wrote.
In the end, Marco, Susan, Charity, Cassia and I had signed up for recruiting. Madi and Joy chose strategy and propaganda. Stella, Nick and Verity went to negotiation.
I hoped that I could finally bring some sort of change to this place.
