Chapter Eighteen
The Switch
Natsu's POV:
As soon as we were informed that this little get to know you concert was over Gajeel walked up to us and said,
"I don't know about you guys but I could really use a drink after all of that." We all nodded in agreement and after packing everything up we headed back to the Bar Sun.
Once we were back at the bar we noticed that pretty much everyone else had the same idea only now the weird tension that we were all feeling earlier was gone and we were just a bunch of musicans drinking after a gig. The only band that we didn't see as we were taking shots and singing along with the juke box was Sabertooth. I knew that their singer didn't look too happy after we performed, but I didn't think that would be any reason for them to not come out and drink. I simply just shook that thought out of my head as I watched my smoking hot girlfriend dancing and singing on top of the bar with Erza, a very drunk Levy and the drummer from that all girl band Mermaid something or other. I couldn't keep my eyes off of her as I downed another shot, I then noticed that the lead singer from that blue horse group was also eyeing up my girlfriend,
I could feel jealousy begin to claw at me with those looks he was giving her, but I just kept it to myself as I drank another shot. I wanted to walk over and punch him in the face but I knew that Lucy really hated it when I got into fights, unless they were with Gray or Gajeel.
Just then the song changed and Lucy climbed off the bar and brushed off the blue horse guy as he was trying to hit on her as she headed right for me, she then wrapped her arms around my neck and kissed me. I just grabbed her around the waist as I deepened the kiss which left us both gasping for air. Lucy then whispered in my ear,
"Do you wanna get out of here?" I could see by the look in her eyes what she was thinking and I was already on my feet and pulling her towards the door as she giggled behind me.
Once we got to the inn we realized two very important things one we were all sharing one room and two Wendy was sleeping right there, so any thoughts of doing what we were going to do were quickly forgotten as we climbed into the bed that Lucy had called dibs on earlier fully clothed and I pulled the comforter over us before oblivion claimed us both.
Lucy's POV:
I am used to waking up to being wrapped up in Natsu's swealtering heat as he snores loudly in my ear, I am not used to being waken up at 7am to a PA system announcing rules to the next battle especially since we only climbed into bed four hours ago. I wasn't happy and I was nowhere near coherant enough to deal with this so I burrowed my head under my pillow and prayed that it would stop.
It didn't and after Erza wrestled my pillow away from me I looked down on the floor to see Natsu sitting there looking about how I felt and I wondered how I had missed him falling out of the bed. Just the the evil PA voice began again,
"Good morning band members we trust you slept well." The entire band just glared at the speaker as the voice continued, "So we have decided to change the rules a little for tonights battle. We have decided that we would take the songs that planned to cover and put them in a hat so that you would all get a different song." We were all staring at that speaker with our mouths hanging open, could they really do this? I looked over at Erza with that question written all over my face and she just nodded that they indeed could. "The bands and songs have all been drawn and let's see what you all will be preforming after the switch. Sabertooth will be performing Smooth Criminal, Lamia scale will be playing superstition, Quatro Puppy will be performing Papa don't Preach, Mermaid Heel will now be performing Black Betty, Blue Pegasus will be playing Hotel California and finally Fairy Tail will be performing Boys of Summer. This is a test to see if you and your lead singers can handle the challege so no switching things up. See you tonight and good luck."
As the PA system went silent we all just sat there in our room quietly thinking to ourselves how this contest just got really bad for us. I thought that we had planned for everything that they could throw at us, but this I didn't expect. Just then Levy and Wendy walked in with those smiles of theirs as Levy said,
"Why don't you guys set everything up while we go get some coffee and breakfast then we'll figure out how you can rock this song." I took a deep breath and smiled at the two blue haired girls. They believed in us, even more then we believed in ourselves.
Natsu's POV:
We spent the entire day practicing a song that none of really liked from the start, but as we slowly molded it to fit us, I think that it sorta became ours in the end. So now here we were in the middle of our stage again waiting for the evil PA system to start speaking to us. As we stood there waiting I couldn't help but let my eyes wander to Lucy who was wearing a pair of skinny jeans with one black leg and one red, she also had on a black crop top which was covered by a fishnet top. Her blond hair was in pig tails tied with red and black ribbon. She looked amazing, just like she always did, and just like always I could tell that she was nervous about performing. I smiled at her as I moved closer and took her hand in mine as I said softly,
"You know the song, and your going to rock it better then that Don guy so relax. We got this." I could feel her relax next to me as she squeezed my hand reasuringly. Just as soon as she smiled up at me the PA crackled to life,
"Hello out there boys and girls! I hope that you are all ready to perform tonight. We decided that since tonight was a concert of chance that the order in which you performed should be chance as well so we put your names back in the hat and here is what we got. First up is Quatro Puppy, next is Mermaid Heel, followed by Fairy Tail, Lamia Scale, Sabertooth and Blue Pegasus. So why don't we get started?"
The spot light landed on Quatro Puppies stage as the band took teir places and the lead singer approached the mike,
"I just want to say that this is probably one of the most embarssing songs that we've ever had to perform and I hate the band the picked it." With that being said the drums began to pound out the beat that was quickly followed by the guitar which sounded like the song in question, just with more of a rock edge as Bacchus began to sing with what seemed to be a pained look on his face, "Papa I know that you are going to be upset. 'Cause I was always your little girl, but you should know by now that I'm not a baby. You always taught me right from wrong, I need your help. Daddy please be strong I may be young at heart but I know what I'm saying. The one you warned me all about. The one you said I could do without we're in an aweful mess and I don't mean maybe, please. Papa don't preach I;m in trouble deep. Papa don't preach I've been losing sleep." I watched as Bacchus closed his eyes and took a deep breath before he continued, "But I made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby. gonna keep my baby mmm..." He then began to sway with the music. I mean these guys covered in metal and spikes performing this song should really be rediculous but as they continued I noticed that they were mocking the song and themselvee. They had turned this song into a comedy and it was hilarious. As soon as the last note was sung we all were clapping and laughing well, except for the mermaids who I think orginally picked the song and sabertooth although I think that their blonde guitarist really wanted to laugh, but one look from their wicked witch of a singer caused it to die before it left his lips.
Once Qautro Puppy bowed and laughed at themselves with us the spotlight was now on the Mermaids, who were already begining to play. They had somehow made one of their guitars sound like it was a banjo, which was awesome. Then the drums kicked in and the tempo sped up as Kagura began to practicly scream into the mike,
"Woah black betty, Bam a lam go black betty. Black betty had a child bam a lam, damn thing gone wild bam a lam. She's always ready bam a lam. She's all rock steady bam a lam." Kagura then began to bob her head in time with the drums as she continued, "Woah black betty bam a lam, go black betty bam a lam." The tempo slowed slightly as kagura smiled, "All right!" Then they were playing faster then before. I couldn't help but to tap my foot to the beat and as I looked around everyone else was too. Once the last Bam a lam was sung we were all screaming and clapping and I could see a faint blush on Kagrua's cheeks as the spot light left them.
Lucy's POV:
As soon as the spot light left Mermaid Heel I wanted to be sick. There was no way we could do better than that. They owned that song. I brought my fingers to my mouth, but before I could chew on my thumb nail Natsu caught my hand in his as he smiled down at me, in that way of his that made my stomach do little flips. Then he was unwinding his scarf from around his neck and wrapping it around mine as he said,
"For luck, not that you need it, because you got this." I blinked back tears of gradatude and kissed him softly on the lips as I said,
"No, we got this." His smile just widened as he nodded and walked over to his guitar. I took a deep breath and walked over to the mike. "So this morning when we were all jolted awake by these new rules I was really pissed, but after taking this song and molding it to fit us, and seeing that what you guys have done too, I'm actually kinda happy it worked out like this." With that Natsu and Gray began to play quickly followed by Erza and Gajeel. I tapped my foot as I counted the beats. I then cupped the mirophone in my hands as began to sing,
"Nobody on the road. Nobody on the beach. I feel it in the air. The summer's out of reach. Empty lake, empty streets. The sun goes down alone. I'm drivin' by your house. Though I know you're not at home." I smiled at Natsu as I winked and began to sing a little louder, "But I can see you- Your brown skin shinin' in the sun. You got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on, baby. And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong After the girls of summer have gone." As I paused to take a breath I heard the other bands clap and hollar at how we changed this song ever so slightly to fit us. I then grabbed the mike and began to dance around the stage as I watched Natsu and Gray play. I found myself drawn to Natsu's side and before I knew what I was doing I was running my fingers over his arm as I continued, "I never will forget those nights. I wonder if it was a dream. Remember how you made me crazy? Remember how I made you scream? Now I don't understand what happened to our love. But babe, when I get you back." I walked away from Natsu as I all but screamed, "I'm gonna show you what I'm made of." I put the mike back in the stand as I swayed, " I can see you- Your brown skin shinin' in the sun. I see you walkin' real slow and you're smilin' at everyone. I can tell you my love for you will still be strong. After the girls of summer have gone." I felt the tempo speed up a bit as I continued, "Out on the road today, I saw a BLACK FLAG sticker on a Cadillac.
A little voice Inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never look back." I thought I knew what love was. What did I know? Those days are gone forever. I should just let them go but-" I could feel my voice growing louder, "I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun. You got that top pulled down and that radio on, baby. And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong. After the girls of summer have gone." As soon as the last word was out of my mouth, I couldn't keep the smile off of my face as the other bands applauded and cheered for us.
After that I don't remember a whole lot of what happened after, just that Lyon and the rest of Lamia scale rocked superstition, but I thought that maybe it was a little too perfect. Then Sabertooth performed Smooth Criminal and they took it and made it darker and truly amazing. Finally Blue Pegasus played Hotel California and instead of just performing the song as it was they decided to give it some spanish flare and I swear it was better then the original.
To be continued...
Again I am so sorry that this is so late. let me know what you think.
