Disclaimer: The Chronicles of Narnia belong to C.S. Lewis, not me or am I making any profit with this story. I only own Alexandra and her friends/family or any other character you don't recognize.
Alex and Ed had walked in absolute silence for a while, her guess was that her husband was making sure no one could hear what he wanted to say, that it was just the two of them having a talk, and honestly, she liked it better that way. Alexandra dearly missed having long talks about anything and everything with him, compared to the boys she knew back in the twenty-first century, who mostly cared about sports or their hair and clothes, Edmund was definitely the breath of fresh air she had been needing.
Although she wasn't sure of how much of the truth she would disclose in this little talk, the queen was absolutely certain that this 'heart-to-heart' conversation between them was long overdue.
Finally, the pair made it into the east and prettiest gardens of the castle were only the monarchs were allowed to be, it was the only place they could escape to when they wanted to be alone for whatever reason. Alexandra had the feeling that Edmund spent a lot of time here after she left; instantly her heart felt heavier with guilt.
They kept walking and Alex wondered if Ed was waiting for something in particular to start talking. She just looked around, not really surprised at how beautiful and peaceful it everything was, after all, she was in Narnia, but equally delighted to be in that particular place.
The queen was so busy admiring everything around her that she almost didn't realize when Edmund stopped walking, thankfully, she decided to spy on his expression from the corner of her eye when she noticed he had stopped. She immediately came to a halt too, just to realize where he had led her.
She felt like crying once she noticed where they were, her heart was as quick to recognize the place as her brain. Had she not been so distracted, she would have come to the conclusion that that was his true intention of going to that place.
"Please, have a seat." He said as he positioned himself on the green grass, leaning slightly against the trunk of the tree. He looked so relaxed and peaceful, Alex hoped he'd stay like that, although she knew that was unlikely.
She hesitated for a few seconds, but ended up sitting beside him, not too close so she could maintain her composure but close enough to avoid hurting his feelings. Alex looked up and saw the thin branches moving slightly with the wind, smiling slightly at the sight of the pink flowers attached to them.
"I was truly surprised when you mentioned this as your favorite tree." Her husband said drawing her attention back to him. She frowned slightly in confusion, he had never told her this before.
"How so?" She asked.
"Well, there was the fact that you were so strong, so unlike any girl I met before." He said and she arched an eyebrow 'was that supposed to be a compliment?' Alexandra thought. "You were certainly girly, but never a damsel in distress. For some reason I just never imagined you sitting under a cherry blossom tree. All pink and delicate." He explained further. "There was that, and then your face when Susan presented you with a pink dress for your first ball." He said smirking at the end, remembering clearly her expression.
Alexandra blushed furiously at the memory. "That was different." She defended herself. "Did you see that dress? The color was simply painful to see! I felt bad for hurting Susan's feelings by not wearing it, but I would have looked like chewing gum!" She said laughing at the end and Edmund surprisingly joined.
"You would have." He nodded. "I'm glad you ended up wearing that royal blue one, it suited you perfectly." Ed added looking away.
Alex rolled her eyes. "You were just delighted that we matched." She caught his train of thought effortlessly. Edmund was supposed to be surprised, but he wasn't, Alex knew him better than anyone, she had this ability to guess whatever he was thinking.
"I won't deny it, as it's certainly true. However, you looked beautiful that night." He said looking up, making Alex blush one more when she heard him sigh and then whisper. "You always do."
She felt her heart melting inside her chest, she had wished so many times to be reunited with her love, and now that her wish had been granted, even though it wasn't exactly how she had imagined it to happen, she was wasting his precious company like a complete fool.
"I've missed you Alex." He surprised her by speaking once again. "I've missed you a lot."
"I've missed you too Ed, I know it's kind of hard to believe, but I have." She finally dared to look into his eyes, not caring if she would get lost in them and never find a way out.
"Then why are we fighting so much?" He whispered, lost in her eyes too. But the words did the trick to bring Alex back to reality.
"Well…There's the fact that I'm not ready to talk about me leaving and you're having a hard time understanding it, and there's also Lady Cassandra." She explained looking away, remembering how hurt she had felt when she saw them in the library.
Edmund sighed. That woman was giving him more problems lately than the arrangement with the Giants.
"I know I haven't been as understanding as I should have, but I need to be understood too. How would you feel in my place? Being in the dark for so long…It's maddening." He said running a hand through his hair.
"I understand that Ed, but it still hurts that you don't trust me enough to wait." She said, feeling like a total hypocrite, he was being honest and she still couldn't be.
"I'm trying Alex, believe me. When I saw your black eyes yesterday I understood that pushing to talk is not the-"
"Wait, you saw what?" She asked incredulously, Alex knew she had let her control slip but not enough to show in her eyes, that wasn't good.
"Your eyes, they changed their color. They were onyx." He explained with a confused expression on his face, and suddenly Alexandra was sitting very still, she had tensed up quickly at the mention of her eyes. Something wasn't right. "What does that mean Alex, please tell me." He begged and she tried to slow her brain down to find the appropriate words, he had seen it happen and wouldn't get off her back unless she gave him some sort of explanation.
"You remember my title right?" She asked.
"The one Aslan gave you?"
"Yes."
"The Light Queen, of course." He said quite confused.
"Each of you knew why you received your titles, I however, had no clue, so I did what I thought was logic: I went to Aslan for answers." She explained and the king only nodded, encouraging her to continue. "He told me that Nathan and I represented the Yin-yang in this world, that means the balance between light and darkness. I was light and Nathan was…"
"Darkness." Edmund understood immediately.
"Right…That's why our bond is so strong, apparently we cannot exist without the other. However, the fact that I represent the light doesn't mean that there's no darkness inside me, I am a human after all, I have dark emotions too. Nathan gave up his light long ago, which means he is only darkness now, and he wants the same destiny for me. I try to fight the darkness inside me all the time, but sometimes it just…It's stronger than me. Particularly now that my magic is not as strong as it was before." She finished her explanation, but he had to ask the only question she wanted to avoid.
"What do you mean? What's happened to your magic?" He wondered out loud and Alex sighed, trying to come up with something other than the truth.
But in the end she didn't have to lie at all, because their private moment was interrupted by a very high pitched voice.
"King Edmund!" Both monarchs flinched when they heard a voice calling Ed, he cringed when he recognized the voice and Alexandra just looked in the direction that the voice came from, finding a blonde woman practically running towards them, she didn't recognize her at first, but it was still impressive that she had managed to get to this part of the garden.
'You've got to be kidding me.' Edmund thought.
I'm sorry if this is not as interesting as you'd like I just want Alex to open herself slowly so you can understand her as a character, I hope that makes sense. Hope you enjoy, recommend and leave some reviews! Much love
