Before they knew all knew it, it was dinner time. The monarchs had spent the rest of the afternoon cooped up in Peter's study, trying to figure out their next move in this conflict, although Edmund was a little bit, and just a tiny bit more worried about how Alexandra would react when she found out. Because it was clear that they could plan it all by themselves, but people would start talking about it as soon as it happened, and he knew very well that word spread quite quickly around Narnia.
He knew she'd be very upset, and in a normal occasion (or at least before she left) he would have been able to at least explain it and make her see in a rational way why they were doing what they were doing. However, since he had seen her black eyes that one time she got really mad, that's all that popped up every time he thought about her finding out. And this thought wasn't particularly a pleasant one.
On the other side of the castle, Alexandra had left her friend's room shortly after she gave her final word on the little discussion instigated by her guardian, and locked herself up in her temporary room. She was afraid she would run into Edmund if she went to their room, so she had a nymph set a random room for her to stay in.
Ninarika hadn't spoken another word, and Alex was kind of glad to have silence for a while, that way she could be able to reorganize her ideas properly, and then decide what to do next. She could feel every time Nathan tried to break through the wall she had created, and as much as she hated to admit it, the fact that she felt him more and more every time, made her panic. It was hard not to think about the situation, but she knew that if Nathan failed to break in, he'd try to get inside her head to get all the information possible, so she couldn't even be vulnerable inside her own mind.
"Alex." Nina called for her attention.
"Hmm?" She responded absentminded.
"It's supper time, and tonight it'll be held in the northern balcony of the castle" The tigress said getting up and slowly walking towards the door, waiting for her mistress to catch up.
They both walked in silence for a while, Alexandra still lost in her thoughts while Nina led the way for them. But suddenly the tigress stopped.
"What's wrong?"
"Can't you hear it?" The guardian asked her.
"Hear what?" Alex asked confused, and kept walking forward quickly, worried for whatever her friend had caught with her super sensitive ears.
"Alex, wait!" Ninarika advanced after her.
But the queen didn't listen to her companion and kept walking at a fast pace until she reached the scene the tigress had overheard, and how not to expect something like this.
"So Robert, tell us a little bit more about yourself, if you don't mind." Peter was the one talking when Alexandra silently reached that night's dining grounds, the food was surprisingly not served yet, which meant they were most definitely waiting for her arrival.
She chastised herself for not telling him to wait for her to come down to dinner and avoid this situation. She had to stop getting so caught up in the moment.
The brunette looked at her friend for a brief moment before making her presence known, and just by the panicked expression on his face, she knew she had to intervene before it was too late. She loved Robert a lot, but being his best friend, she also knew quite well that he spilled a lot more of information than needed whenever he was put on the spot.
"Good evening everyone." Alexandra greeted them, taking the attention from her friend.
"Oh Alex, glad you could join us." Lucy said truthfully, making the queen smile in her direction as she took the empty seat between Edmund and Robert.
"My apologies for being late." She said looking at their empty plates, they had to be starving.
"Do not worry Alex." Susan said dismissively.
Peter made a hand movement and suddenly many servants were walking around with platters full of food, filling their plates quickly.
The food was as always, wonderful, even though Alex was far from finishing everything that was put on her plate, she enjoyed every bite she took. However, the dining table was rather quiet, which seemed strange for her, as she remembered from previous times the table full of conversations, were they related with Narnian affairs, or simply stories from their day, they always had something to talk about.
"So…" She started after pretty much everyone was done with their food. "Are we going to just going to sit here and be awkwardly quiet for a little while longer, or are we going to you know…try to interact with each other?" Alex said sassily, making her guardian smile.
"Our apologies Alex, it's just been a long day, and we're quite exhausted." Peter said politely with a rather tired smile, but Alexandra just knew he was straight up lying. "But I do recall that before your arrival we were trying to get to know Robert here a little better."
"Yeah, it's been a while since we've had earth visitors here in Narnia." Susan added herself into the conversation. "And we're even more curious that he knows you in a world where we don't."
"Yeah Robert, tell us how this troublemaker is in her natural environment?" Caspian said looking teasingly at Alex, who rolled her eyes but smiled nonetheless.
"Were I an animal, he'd be able to answer that dearest Caspian, pity that I'm not. Besides, you all know me, I'm pretty much the same when I'm on earth…" Alex started but then corrected herself. "Well, maybe I'm a little more sarcastic there, Narnia tends to soften me up a little."
"Gee, I can only wonder why." Lucy said looking at her raven haired brother with a small smirk.
Alex rolled her eyes playfully, but she knew the littlest Pevensie had caught her remark immediately. And through the corner of her eye, she was able to see a very serious Edmund break into a small smile.
"So back to Robert…" Susan tried once more to get the foreigner into the conversation "Please do tell us about how you and Alex met."
Now the sixth ruler could clearly see how her husband was suddenly interested in the conversation. Robert blushed when he realized all the attention was back to him, but after looking at his friend's comforting smile that had 'I'm sorry' written all over it, he took a deep breath and decided it was time to leave his shyness behind.
"Well, I met Alex when she first enrolled into my parent's dance studio many years ago. She was one of the best dancers I'd ever seen, I knew I had to be friends with her, that way she wouldn't be able to refuse dancing with me sometime." He said with a smile looking towards the blushing brunette, and although Alex and Nina knew perfectly that it was the pure and innocent truth, for the rest, it sounded like he had other intentions with the girl that was a part of their family.
"If they only knew" Alex thought for Nina to hear. The tigress couldn't help herself but smile.
"So you met her before she came to Narnia for the first time?" Peter questioned.
"Oh yes, we've known each other for about seven or eight years now." Rob said nonchalantly.
"That's wonderful then! Can you say she's changed much?" Lucy asked, the curiosity to know more about her dear friend shining in her eyes.
"Well, I would say she's less tough than when I first met her, but that's because then she was still living with her parents and it wasn't easy, now that I've met you all I understand a little better why her character has improved, and who I have to thank for it." He added jokingly.
"Yeah, it wasn't an easy affair, but between all of us made it possible." Caspian teased Alex further, making her roll her eyes.
"Did you know Alex, my mother always said that if you rolled your eyes too much, they would get stuck." Peter chimed in.
"Oh really?" Alexandra said sarcastically, but couldn't help herself but to smile when he made that comment, as it felt like the old times when they used to tease her about silly things in the most brotherly way, something her own brother had done very few times.
"Do you know Nathan too?" Edmund was the one to cut the friendly conversation with a question everyone would've been fine without knowing the answer to, especially after the affairs they had discussed today.
The raven haired king witnessed how Alexandra tensed immediately upon hearing the question, as well as all of his siblings giving him the death stare for daring to ask such a thing, even when he knew how his wife felt whenever he was brought up, but he needed to know how much Robert actually knew. He could be of some use in the future.
"I've met Nathan, yes, but I do have to say I've always been more close to Alex." Robert answered without taking his eyes off his friend, she looked so uncomfortable it was sad, it was her brother who they were talking about after all, and they were very close when he met them, becoming even closer once their parents had passed away.
Susan tried to change the topic of the conversation, trying to give Alexandra space to breathe and recover from such an awkward moment. But it was needless to say the queen didn't take another bite of her food for the rest of the evening.
Why did Edmund keep crossing the lines she had put so much effort into creating? She loved whenever he challenged her, as she hadn't met many men who could actually match up her wits and appreciated their particular encounters, however, this trait she loved so much about her husband, it was at the moment driving her crazy.
"So Robert, you said your parents had an academy back on London, do you work there?"
"Oh Lord no, I couldn't ever work for them, I'm a designer."
Lucy gasped, remembering what Alex had said about her outfit when she arrived at the palace.
"You're the one behind Alex's dress, aren't you?" She said excited, her eyes shining expectantly.
The blonde looked at Alexandra confused.
"The one I was wearing for the gala, remember?" She said and watched as he realized which dress Lucy was talking about.
"Oh yes yes, of course, now I remember! Yes your majesty, that was me."
Lucy squealed in delight. She wanted to see if he had any ideas for her wardrobe and also Susan's, lately their gowns were looking very repetitive, and quite boring.
"That dress was beautiful!" The youngest queen exclaimed, looking over at Susan with pure joy in her eyes, the dullness from having discussed such serious and aggravating affairs for most of the day vanished.
And with Lucy and Susan taking turns to lead the conversation, the rest of the evening went by without further inconvenient. Edmund didn't participate in the conversation, deep in thoughts of how they could use Robert to make their plan work. And for his wife, she was trying her best to keep her guard up, because her twin could feel every time he was present in her thoughts and that made him very curious about what was going around her, so he was trying his best to get into her head as the rest of her family talked without a care.
It was unbelievable how she couldn't even have a simple family dinner without having all of her family members present, one way or another.
I'm sorry if you think this chapter is kind of lame! Just trying to make you understand what's going on inside of Alex's head, it'll be worth it, promise! Please leave me your comments saying whatever you feel after you read this, I just like to know if I'm only writing for myself, or if someone else is interested. Thank you!
