Here's the next chapter! Hope you all enjoy!
July 7, X791
Phoenix Dawn was managing to fend off the hatchlings, but they were finally slowing down after fighting so many for so long.
"There's just no end to them!" Spiral grunted.
Spiral punched a hatchling in the head, amplifying the force to send it flying into its comrades and creating a hole in their forces. Suddenly, all of them saw a vision of a hatchling on top of a building and firing a beam through Hikari's throat.
"What…" Spiral held onto his head. "What WAS that?"
"I… died?" Hikari muttered shakily.
Azusa looked up to the building from their vision and saw a hatchling come into view.
"It showed up!" Azusa gasped. "Just like we saw!"
Before the hatchling could do anything else, Spiral jumped in front of it, spun in the air once and slammed his heel against the top of the tiny dragon's head and sent him crashing all the way to the bottom floor. Soon after, the rest of the building collapsed from the attack's force and the heavy pieces of debris crushed the hatchling underneath. Spiral stood before the ruins with his back toward the remaining hatchlings.
"After what we just saw…" Spiral began growling and turned toward the hordes of enemies with eyes of rage.
The ground began shake almost uncontrollably and Azusa and Hikari tried their best to keep balanced.
"An earthquake, now of all times?!" Hikari exclaimed.
"No!" Azusa replied to Hikari.
Azusa didn't know how to tell Hikari of the anger and hate she had seen on Spiral's face in their vision.
Aqua had finally reached the stadium's infirmary and burst through one of the doors.
"Jayden, we need you!" Aqua shouted.
"Aqua?" Wilbur flew up to her.
"What's going on?" Jayden asked. "I could feel a lot of shaking out there!"
At that moment, Jayden and Aqua had received a vision of their immediate futures, just as Spiral and his group had.
"Aqua, something's about to come through this window!" Jayden shouted.
Aqua created a knife out of water and as a hatchling flew through the window, she threw the knife and it pierced straight and cleanly through the creature's head, causing it to fall and slide across the floor dead.
"Thanks, Aqua." Jayden said.
"Jayden, there are dragons attacking the city!" Aqua informed him. "Frost is fighting one of them, but she can't handle it on her own. So, please! Eat my water!"
Aqua held out her left hand and created a fairly large orb of water in it.
Foster had managed to defeat another wave of hatchlings and the constant fighting was starting to take its toll on him.
"It looks like they aren't any left around here." Foster said. "I better go help Meredy while I can."
A barely living hatchling lying on the ground raised its head and fired a magic beam at Foster, but he swiftly moved far to his left and completely avoided the attack. With the last of its strength drained, the hatchling's body went limp and could no longer move.
"How did I know that thing was about to attack?" Foster muttered. "Now's not the time to think about it! For now, I have to find Meredy!"
Foster ran off in the direction he saw his fiancée go in a few minutes earlier.
In the castle courtyard, a tower was about to fall on top of Kyo and Yukino realized her vision was about to come true.
"Kyo, above you!" Yukino shouted.
Kyo held out his fist toward the falling tower and it broke apart upon contact, two massive chunks of it crushing the hatchlings surrounding him. Yukino sighed with relief and resumed dealing with the enemies around her. Even after all of the fighting, Arcadios was still at Hisui's side, both of them behind Yukino and watching her battle.
"Princess… Let us pull back and leave this place to the wizards." Arcadios suggested.
Yukino stepped back to in front of the princess. "I shall cover your retreat."
"No… Please allow me to stay here…" Hisui requested. "I have a duty to watch over these people."
"Everybody!"
They saw Lucy running toward them, wearing garb from the Celestial World given to her by one of her spirits after hers had disappeared.
"Miss Lucy!" Yukino exclaimed.
"Look at this!" Lucy showed them a notebook in her hand.
"What is this?" Yukino inquired.
"A notebook from the future me." Lucy answered.
"The future Lucy?" Happy asked as he flew toward them with Carla, Lily and Volt following him.
"Look here!" Lucy opened the journal and handed it to Yukino.
Yukino began to read it aloud. "'If, for any reason, the Eclipse door were destroyed in this timeline'… 'the door in my future timeline would cease to exist, and therefore, so would I. I'd vanish.'"
"What does that mean?" Arcadios asked.
"In other words, suppose that we destroyed the door in the present, right?" Lucy began to explain. "Then all the futures would be rewritten with one in which the door is destroyed. And if there's no door in the future, Rogue won't have any way to come BACK from the future!"
"I see…" Lily said. "If Rogue can't come from the future, that means the world should return to the path it used to be on…"
"But… will it undo the things that have already happened?" Hisui wondered.
"If all goes well, the dragons and Rogue will all disappear from this time!" Happy cheered.
"It's certainly worth trying!" Carla said.
"However, there remains one very large problem." Arcadios motioned his eyes toward Eclipse. "How do we destroy such a massive structure?"
"Any magic we throw at it will just be syphoned by it." Yukino stated.
"On top of that, it's built of a metal extremely resistant to magic, Maginanium." Arcadios added. "It won't be easy to destroy."
"We still have to try!" Lucy said.
The battle between Frost and the dragon Auraia was not going well for the former. The Ice Dragon Slayer was running low on stamina and the crystalline dragon didn't even seem to be tired out in the slightest.
"Where's all that fire now, Dragon Slayer?" Auraia asked with a devious smirk.
Frost panted heavily. "… Fuck… off…"
Auraia then leered at Frost. "… Alright then, enough playing around!"
The dragon's massive claw was raised and was about to swipe at Frost until it was suddenly struck by a large, powerful torrent of water.
"What?!" Auraia exclaimed in surprise.
"Sorry I'm late, Frost!"
Frost perked up at the sound of the new voice and Jayden came up to her side.
"What the hell took you so long?" Frost asked.
"A lot of those annoying little dragons got in our way." Jayden replied.
"Damn it!" Auraia growled. "There're two of you now! No matter, even your combined might won't be enough to defeat me!"
"We'll see about that!" Jayden smiled before turning to face Frost. "Frost, you still got juice left in you?"
Frost just leered at Jayden and then sighed. "… A little…"
Despite Lucy utilizing one of her physically strongest spirits, Taurus, there still wasn't even a scratch made on Eclipse.
"How stubborn can a door be?!" Lucy questioned.
"We can't mooove it an inch!" Taurus said.
"Huh?" Yukino heard a sound coming from above. "What?"
The light from the moon vanished and a large object was hurling right towards their direction.
"Run away!" Happy screamed to everyone. "Everybody, get away from the door!"
What was heading to the ground was the giant dragon Future Rogue had been riding upon.
Taurus vanished and Lucy, Yukino and the Exceeds ran away from Eclipse as Motherglare crashed into the magical gate, smashing it to pieces and causing a large amount of dust to be scattered through the air. On the ground next to the dragon, there was a bruised and beaten Natsu standing triumphantly over a barely conscious Future Rogue lying on the ground.
"The door's destroyed!" Happy cheered.
"Natsu!" Lucy exclaimed in joy.
"I can't believe my eyes!" Arcadios spoke as he and the princess gazed at the destroyed gate. "I thought nothing could destroy that door…"
"The question is… what will happen now?!" Hisui wondered aloud.
"If the future Lucy's notes were correct, no one in the future will be able to use the door now." Yukino said.
"In other words, Rogue won't be able to come back in time." Lily said.
"History should go back to the way it was!" Carla said.
Suddenly, Motherglare was glowing in a strange light and slowly started to vanish.
Just as Sakura and Lionel were recovering from Talfos's most recent attack, the Grave Dragon became enveloped in the same light and his body became somewhat transparent.
"Hmm…" Talfos examined his body. "It appears that our time here has come to an end…" He then turned his head to the two Dragon Slayers. "You have both done well in withstanding my attacks, young Dragon Slayers… Princess of the Forests?"
"You… you mean me?" Sakura asked.
Talfos nodded. "When I return to my own time… I shall pay Fleuressca a visit and tell her about you…"
In the middle of Jayden and Frost's battle with their dragon, Auraia started to notice that he was returning to his own time as well.
"What?!" Auraia exclaimed. "No! I'm not done with these humans yet! Dammit!"
"What's going on?" Jayden asked.
"Your guess is as good as mine." Frost replied.
All around the capital, the dragons were surrounded in the same light as the others and all of them eventually disappeared, returning to their respective points in time, including the future Rogue and the many hatchlings spread across the capital. In spite of none of the Dragon Slayers being successful in doing what their name entails, everyone was just relieved that the battle was finally over.
Lionel just sat on the ground with his legs crossed with irritation written all over his face.
"I really wanted to punch that Future Rogue in the face before he disappeared!" Lionel grumbled.
"… Why don't you just punch our Rogue?" Sakura asked with a straight face.
"… Hmmm…" Lionel pondered the idea.
While Lionel was focused on his thoughts, Sakura looked down at her open hand.
*Were any of us able to defeat a single dragon?* Sakura thought to herself. *It just goes to show how much farther we have to go before we can truly be called Dragon Slayers…*
She tightly clenched her open palm into a fist and looked up at the clear, starry sky with the lunar eclipse officially over.
With the chaos died down, Foster was still running around the ruins of the city until he found Jellal, Meredy and Morticia gathered in the middle of an abandoned intersection.
"Thank God you're all okay…" Foster sighed with relief, but then realized that there was someone missing. "Wait, where's Ultear?"
"Unfortunately, we cannot find her." Jellal answered. "We'll have to continue the search at another time. We don't want the Council to find us."
Meredy looked a bit sullen.
"You worried?" Foster asked as he placed a hand on Meredy's shoulder.
Meredy nodded.
"If Ultear IS still out there, I'm sure she'll find her way to us eventually." Jellal said. "She's more than capable of keeping herself hidden." He then started to walk away.
"Wait for me!" Morticia followed Jellal.
Meredy still stood in place and sadly looked at the ground.
"I know Ultear and I haven't been on the best terms lately, but…" Foster looked at Meredy with a hint of concern. "I really hope she's all right out there…"
Meredy suddenly embraced Foster, her face buried into his chest.
"… Meredy? I… I broke my promise… I had a vision… and in it… I died…"
Foster could make out a muffled sobbing sound coming from Meredy.
"I'm… I'm… I'm just so happy that it didn't turn out that way!"
As Meredy continued crying into Foster, he embraced her back and petted the back of her head, remaining silent and letting her shed her tears.
A/N: That's the end of the chapter and, soon, the end of the story! I hope you all enjoyed! Stay tuned for next time!
