Lisbon felt sick. As if it was not hard enough to get up early in the morning, but with a stomach bug, it was nearly impossible. Jane was impossible too. He spotted her discomfort before she even got out of the bed. Since then, for about ten minutes, he told her to stay at home at least twenty times. She would gladly do it, but the workaholic in her refused.

„It´s just an upset stomach, Jane," she hissed at him after he made a another remark about staying home.

He sighed. When she called him Jane instead of Patrick, he knew it´s no good. This was a war he simply couldn´t win.

„Okay, Teresa," he said grumpily and went downstairs to make her coffee that might cheer her up . Lisbon watched him leave and bit her lip. He only tried to do what´s best for her. Sometimes it amazed her what just a little gesture meant to him. Just like this one. Calling him Jane again. Now he will probably brood through the whole day at work. This needs to be fixed. Upset stomach is one thing, upset Patrick Jane is another.

She hurried down the stairs, already dressed for work. Jane was sitting at the table, drinking tea. Her coffee was ready, placed at the table.

„Hey, Patrick," she said placing a hand on his shoulder, „look I´m sorry, I know you just wanted to help."

„Hm," was all that he said.

„Tell you this, if it wont get better during the day, I will go home and rest."

He looked at her with that sad puppy face he used for blackmailing her. He knew she couldn´t resist it.

„Promise?" he pleaded.

„Yeah, promise."

„Good," he smiled and stood up to gave her a quick peck on lips.

„I should get ready, huh? Enjoy your coffee."

Lisbon just smiled at him and reached for her cup. Jane used to make great coffee but this one smelled and tasted...weird. She took a sip and to her surprise it didn´t taste heavenly like she was used to. Perhaps Jane was too occupied worrying about her while making it. With a sigh she took another sip. No good. Oh well, she could buy another coffee on the way to work. Silently, she poured the coffee down the drain. Then she let the water wash out the remaining evidence of her crime and hopefully Jane wouldn´t notice.

Jane didn´t notice. He insisted on driving his car to work and Lisbon was in no mood to fight against him. The more they drove his old Citroen the more she started to actually like it. He even suggested that he would teach her how to drive it properly. To her surprise it was fun. And not so hard as she thought it would be. Right now she was enjoying the view. This day looked promising, sun shinning, not a cloud in the sky. And Jane was all cheerful again after her promise.

This was new to her. He was always protective of her, in his own way, but since they became a couple he reached a new level of protectiveness. Even though Lisbon wasn´t used to it she kind of enjoyed it. Sort of.

Soon enough they entered the CBI parking lot and headed inside. Jane greeted everyone with his usual grin and went right to his couch leaving Lisbon alone in her office. She sat down at her desk feeling not better at all. Maybe it was the same thing Jane had few weeks ago. With a sigh she reached for her paperwork. It was a lot easier job to do after Jane was Cho´s responsibility. He handled him pretty well actually. Well sometimes. Jane was still a number one in creating a mess that others have to clean.

Jane was lying on his couch playing a game called what might be wrong with Lisbon. Yesterday she was fine, he made sure she ate during the day and then at home, he made a nice dinner. He checked all the possibilities and it definitely wasn´t something she ate. She could be coming down with the same cold he got a few weeks ago. That would require a fever and bad cough. She was missing two of the most significant symptoms. He got used to her headaches, even helped her with some simple biofeedback tricks on how to overcome them. Sometimes they worked, sometimes not.

Today, no headache, no cough and no fever. Just an upset stomach. So upset that she refused to get another coffee. And he was half sure that back at home he could smell coffee from the sink. Is it possible that she spilled her coffee?

His Lisbon?

Without coffee in the morning?

There was a though floating around in his head that seemed like a good result for what is wrong with her.

Jane opened his eyes and blinked fast. He could feel his heart skipping a beat. It felt so surreal. The sound of busy bullpen, Van Pelt typing fast on her computer, Rigsby humming some tune, Cho´s phone ringing. All the fuzz around him seemed unreal to him. He sat up breathing heavily.

To be honest this wasn´t the first time she felt kind of uneasy. And she was way more tired that he was used to. He blamed it on the hard work, and rather busy social life they had now.

Think, Jane, think.

He counted days since her last period and found out she is about a week late. More or less.

Could it be? But...she is on the pill. Then again, how hard it is to forget to take it? He wouldn´t forget because, well, he just wouldn´t.

Lisbon could.

How the hell he didn´t saw it sooner? Perhaps it was because of the way of life right now. They stopped living in the past or the future, too. They savored living in the present, not wanting to worry. Just for some time. No major decisions, no big talks about where this is going. It felt right and that is all that matters. Lisbon never brought up the subject of having kids or getting married...the living together thing just happened.

What if...?

He got up now giving a damn about the looks of his colleagues and walked to their small kitchen.

Van Pelt looked at Rigsby, when Jane left.

„What´s wrong with him?"

Rigsby stopped humming that irritating tune and shrugged.

„Why? He looks fine to me."

Van Pelt sighed. Men.

„Didn´t you see his face? He looked as if saw a ghost."

Cho got up from his deck heading to Lisbon´s office.

„We got a case. Dead body in a garden pool."

He took a small peek into the kitchen and saw Jane staring into his cup. As it seems they had another case, not just the drowned guy. He knocked on Lisbon´ door and waited for her response.

„Come in,"

„Hey boss, we got a case downtown. Dead body in a garden pool."

Lisbon looked up from her paperwork and nodded.

„Okay, tell everyone to be ready in ten minutes."

„Will do. Boss?"

„Yes?"

„You might want to check on Jane. He is acting weird."

Lisbon stood up picking her stuff and gave Cho a puzzled look..

„How weird?" she asked as the worries started to bubble inside her.

„He´s in the kitchen, looking into his cup."

Even Cho looked confused after his own statement.

„O-kay," Lisbon said slowly. „I´ll go and see him."

„Sure boss."

Jane was still staring into his empty cup trying to get a hold on himself, when Lisbon entered the small kitchen.

„Patrick? Something´s wrong?"

He winced at her voice and suddenly his cup was not important anymore.

„Uh, I, well...I don´t know." How to tell a woman that she might be pregnant? Before she even got suspicious about it herself? While she is staring at him with those big eyes of hers waiting for any response?

„We might need to talk Teresa."

„About what?" she asked starting to really worry now. We need to talk is always a bad thing. Well, usually. Who knows what it means with Jane?

„I´ll tell you, but not now, okay?"

She sighed and nodded knowing there is no point in fighting with him right now.

„Okay, we got a case then, downtown. Some guy drowned in a garden pool."

Jane gave her a horrified look. To him it was unacceptable for her to go to see a dead body. Any dead body. Drowned or not. He didn´t have a logical explanation for that but still.

„Can´t you stay here? I´ll go with Cho," he said sounding distressed.

„It´s my team. I can´t stay here and let others do my work, Jane."

„You can and please, will you? It´s really important to me that you stay here. We close that one up and I´ll be back and then I explain everything. Please, Lisbon?"

Her expression changed from slightly irritated to very angry in just three seconds.

„What is wrong with you, Patrick? Just tell me." She walked close to him and to her surprise he moved away from her.

„Fine, I´ll stay. Go with Cho and behave, okay?" With that she went to her office feeling even worse then in the morning. They will talk for sure. She told Cho about the change of situation and closed her office door.

It was late when her team returned. She was able to finnish all of her paperwork, even Cho´s paperwork created by Jane. She wrote a few apologize letters for his behavior in latest cases, even put his signature on them. She was putting them on Cho´s desk when the elevator door opened and all four of her colleagues entered the bullpen. Three very grumpy faces greeted her. One of them wasn´t grumpy, Jane looked...weird. They called her before to inform her about the case that was cracked in a record time, thanks to their consultant. Cho might be glad that she did his paperwork because she was sure Jane created another load of it.

After everyone said their goodbyes she and Jane left too. He was awfully quiet on the way home. He drove too slow and looked distracted. Lisbon tried to make a conversation but it was no use. Jane, usually talkative, was silent only responding in one word sentences. She couldn´t wait until they are home to have a talk.

„Can you tell me what is wrong?" she asked right after they stepped in their house. Jane closed the door and locked them. He turned to face her and hugged her.

„How are you feeling?" he whispered into her ear.

„I´m fine Patrick, you are evidently not."

He let go of her and took a deep breath. He thought about the way to tell during the whole day. He even made Cho stop at the pharmacy to buy some pregnancy tests. Cho was curious about that quick stop, but he didn´t ask a thing and for that Jane was grateful.

„Uh I was thinking, hm, maybe we should sat down."

„Fine," Lisbon said and sat on the couch. Jane followed her.

„Now, you were thinking?"

„Yes, I was," he said scooting close to her.

„About?" she asked tiredly.

„Well, I don´t know how to tell you this, but Teresa, I think you might be pregnant." The silence following his revelation was deafening. Lisbon was staring blankly at the wall in front of her. The silent seconds seemed to took hours.

„What?" she asked finally.

Jane had one of his rare moments when he was lost for words.

„Uh, well, think about it. Just think about it. The sickness, you not finishing your coffee, the tiredness and, uh you are about a week late. I counted."

„You counted." she said still staring at the wall as his arguments sank into her brain.

„I did. I´m good at that."

„Yeah."

„You are on the pill, right?"

„Yeah."

„Um is it possible that you forgot to take...?" Jane couldn´t finnish his words watching her. He was shocked ,well , not just shocked but terrified, too. Lisbon looked ten time worse than him.

„Teresa?" he asked quietly, holding her hand.

„Hm?"

„I uh, brought tests, you know, just to make sure... "

„Good." she nodded.

So, this is what he need to talk about...he needed to tell her she might be pregnant. A man telling in to woman first, not the other way around. This is possible only with Jane. She took a deep breath, after holding it for some time.

„Okay, let´s just, you know, let´s be sure. Maybe I just had a stomach bug afterall," she said knowing already that it is highly unlikely. She haven´t got coffee through the whole day, just the though of if made her sick. And she was tired more then ever. Not just today. Oh god.

Jane nodded slowly. He helped her up and together they went to bathroom. Jane handed her those tests. He bought a few remembering this same situation with Angela. One test is not enough.

„Can you wait outside?"she asked with eyes wide open, looking pale.

„Yes, sure. I´ll wait." Jane knew she wouldn´t be comfortable with him in there. Lisbon was always protective about her privacy so he understood why she wanted to do it alone.

It took her some agonizingly long minutes before she opened the door. Her expression was enough for him to know for sure.

„Hmm" was all that she said.

„It will be okay," Jane said surprised by his own calmness. All the fear and doubts left him in a second after seeing her face. She was now the one who was terrified. And even though they didn´t planed on it he would be there for her. For them. The fear will probably return but right now, she needed him to be the strong one. She was strong enough for a lifetime.

„Come here," he said embracing her in a hug. He could feel her little body trembling in his arms, and it didn´t took her long to start sobbing quietly.

„It´s okay, Teresa, it will be just fine." His own eyes became misty.

She wasn´t sure about that. This was so...unexpected. It was just one night when she forgot to took the pill. The one after they went out with team...she thrown herself at him that night. Just one night. Who would expect it? With their age and everything. God.

„I´m sorry, Patrick, I forgot..."

„Shh. Stop it right there. You shouldn´t feel the need to be sorry. Not now, not ever, okay? Promise me." He looked into her puffy eyes knowing his looked the same.

„Promise." she whispered.

„Good."

Lisbon held him tightly. A child. Their child. He started to feel dizzy imaging the responsibility that takes to raise a child. He failed miserably the first time. A thousand what ifs entered his head. He was sure that he wouldn´t survive if anything happened to Teresa and now there was a child. He followed her example and started trembling too.

No. Not now, not in front of her. He got to deal with it for sure. Not now though. He picked her up expecting a fight but she let him carry her to bed where he lied down with her, spooning her. Soon his hand rested on her belly.

It took them some time to get up. Jane made another dinner and they ate silently lost in their thoughts. After their nightly routines they went to bed. It was too early but none of them cared.

Jane cuddled her close and he could feel the tension in her whole body.

„You know I love you," he whispered but she was silent. „I wont leave, Teresa. I simply don´t want to. I will be there for you, for us. I am not saying it will be easy or that I wont have a major breakdown anytime soon, but I wont leave you. Trust me."

She chuckled.

„I think I will be the first to have a breakdown Patrick."

He chuckled too.

„You know what? You´ll go first and then it´s my turn," he said smiling into her hair. „The point is we are here for each other. We will get through anything. We already come a long way."

She started sobbing again.

„I love you too," she managed to say through her sobs, „I´m just scared."

He nodded.

„Me too, it´s completely normal to feel that way," he went silent for a moment to contemplate his own feelings. Aside from the fear and mind numbing doubts he could feel happiness. It was there. A small light inside the darkness.

„I´m also glad." he said quietly which made her sob even more. She turned to him and buried her head into his chest.

He held her tight feeling dizzy again. It wont be an easy road. But he was sure it will be beautiful one. After all best things in life are definitely not easy. Easy things come and then go usually the same way. Easy was never a way for him, not for Lisbon and look where it got them. He kissed her forehead and let the life take it´s course.
