Harry Potter loved to think. In a house were the smallest form of entertainment was used as cruel means of enticement, his only recourse was to delve into his own mind. He loves to pick at each situation of his life and the ridiculous family that he lives with and make pointed remarks on each. He likes to notice everything, how Aunt Petunia pretends to read those economic newspapers but actually hides magazines inside, the twitch of Vernon's mustache when he doesn't understand something. How Dudley actually likes Julie Tanner even though he always kicks her in class.
Sometimes he even thinks about his parents. He thinks about how an unidentifiable man, lying in a hospital somewhere, miraculously gets up and searches for his son Harry right away, "I have to see him." He imagines the man would say. "Otherwise he would be living with that horrible Petunia and that whale Vernon. And that wanker Dudley." (He doesn't really know what wanker meant. He heard Uncle Vernon say it one day and it sounded bad.)
Another favorite was that a long lost Aunt or Uncle suddenly finds out about him and come in to sweep him away. (He doesn't imagine beyond the sweeping away part. Maybe she will cook breakfast for him? All he knows is that it will be wonderful.)
He was deep into his pastime when Mrs. Jean, the teacher who always picks on him (What kind of clothes are you wearing? What sneakers are those? Don't you know how to dress for school?), herds all of them towards the gates of the school to board the bus and learn how to take it all the way to London and back.
He hurries forward, not wanting to get caught up with Dudley and his gang who always lag behind every group, and reaches the gate in front of the group. Suddenly he was pushed to side and Pier run forward and beyond the grasping hands of the teacher. And Harry has a front seat view of the accident.
Suddenly he is afraid to delve back into his mind as he knows that the accident would play itself again and again in his mind. As he answers all the police questions and when Aunt Petunia grasps his shoulders tightly with a fear he has never before seen in relation to him, he leaves his mind deliberately blank.
After all that Aunt Petunia drags Dudley and him home and the, when they are safely within the four walls of their house, she surveys them both with an undecipherable look in her eyes. Dudley twists away, whining about how he wants to go back, that he wants to see all the blood, and will Pier come to play tomorrow or will he have to stay at home like he did when he had chickenpox? (But Harry knew. He knew that Pier won't be going anywhere anymore and that Dudley was never going to see him ever again.)
His mind is still blank when Aunt Petunia locks the cupboard up for the night.
A/N: Hey guys! Inspiration for this chapter was drawn from my own childhood. My parents never allowed me to ever use T.V or computer and I was not allowed the use of cell phone till I left for college. (I had very strict, traditional parents.) Even though I lived in a different country. So most of the time I had to make do with my own imagination and of course books. Even now I don't watch much T.V or use my cell phone much because I was never allowed to make a habit of it.
Please let me know what you guys think!
