THE BOY WITH THE PIERCING BLUE EYES
Chapter 35 – The dream (part 2)
When they first opened their eyes, they were floating above a big city. It was situated near a dark river with no mountains in sight. All the buildings were small except for the smokestacks puffing out thick black smoke and…
'But that's the Eiffel Tower!' Marie let go of Harry's hand. The fear was replaced by curiosity; they wanted to know where they were and how they got there.
Harry, never being in Paris before, only shrugged. Of course, he knew the Tower from pictures and the television, but had never seen it in person. It really was breathtaking.
'What's going on?' Marie asked, more alert now. 'Why are we here?'
'I have no idea… I thought you were going to wake up…'
'How did you get into my dream?'
'With a spell… never mind' Harry shrugged again. 'What's important is how we're going to get out of here… How did we get to Paris? What ties us to this place?'
He felt like something was pulling them towards the Tower and he looked down as they floated closer and closer. He saw a lot of people on the streets; there were festivals and tents everywhere. When he noticed most of them coming by bicycles and carriages, he turned to the girl questioningly.
'So you don't see cars either…'
'Not one…'
'And look at these factories… I'm sure no company can get that much toxic fumes out nowadays… Do you think… we went back in time?'
Harry has already experienced time travel, so the question didn't sound so absurd to him and looked around. He was trying to come up with something that tied them to this city. In the meantime, they reached the part of the tower where the elevators usually took the visitors. Their bare feet strangely didn't touch the floor. They felt like ghosts and the tourists looked through them. Suddenly, Harry realized something.
'Look for someone you know!'
'What?!'
'A… relative…' he remembered Snape's words. He never thought about their conversation before. '…might be among these people…'
'Harry, would you look down for a moment?' the girl pointed downwards, leaning over the railing.
A lot of people gathered there, all waiting for the elevator.
'We can't find anyone in this crowd… and we don't even know who we are looking for!'
'We'll know by their eyes. They'll be the same as yours!'
'Mon Dieu, Harry!' the girl exclaimed. 'There's no point! They can't see or hear us!'
The boy had to admit that she was right.
'We're probably at the turn of the century…' the boy mused.
'Let's find a newspaper,' Marie stood on the rails and jumped off.
'Wait!' Harry shouted but then remembered that nothing was going to happen to her so he followed suit.
They were laughing and racing happily until they found themselves in front of the hand-made poster of a circus.
'You were right…' Marie pointed at the date. 'I wonder what the purpose of…'
Suddenly a strong wind appeared and they were swept away in time and space.
'Don't let go of my hand!' Harry whispered, squeezing the girl's fingers.
'Oh God!' she screamed when they noticed the seemingly endless ocean below them and held the boy's hand tighter.
'A ship…' they noticed at the same time and felt something pulling them closer to it.
They flew around, sometimes stopping in front of the passengers. While Harry moved to the next person, Marie stopped in front of a young woman with shoulder length brown hair, who was travelling alone. She looked at her face and eyes curiously, only to realize that she had very similar eyes to hers.
'Harry…' she whispered first. 'Harry! I found her! I think it's her!'
The boy turned to them but the passenger started towards the stairs.
'She's… like me…' Marie pointed towards her.
Harry floated in circles around the woman and felt annoyed that the woman kept walking so he had no time to examine her features.
'What's happening?!' Marie sighed.
However, they both got scared as the next scene turned into a much bigger, modern ship's deck.
They hugged each other, afraid that the crowed was going to trample them to death however, they had to realize again that they were in a dream.
Harry, looking at the clothing of the people and noticed that they were in another time again.
'Why do you think… we keep jumping in time and space?' the girl cuddled close. 'Are we… dead?'
The boy looked at her with a small smile and shrugged.
'We're like… some ghosts… Walking around among them… this is horrible…'
The pictures flew by them quickly, sometimes not giving them time to see what was happening. The noises, honks and talking all slurred and became hardly understandable.
Harry closed his eyes as he also started to feel scared. Why couldn't he stop the connection between their minds? He didn't want to leave the girl alone here, but with the help of teachers she would be awakened surely… He wished Snape was with them… or… Dumbledore…
He had to admit that after such a long time, he really needed the Headmaster now.
'Harry!' the girl whispered into his ear. 'Open your eyes a little!'
The boy obeyed.
'Look!'
They were in a castle with portraits and chandeliers everywhere. It was dark outside; they could see the clear sky through the huge windows. They were standing at the door of a ball room where men and women danced in heavy clothes with dignity. Their wigs, fans and jewels showed how rich all of them were not to mention their movements and gestures. The conductor directed the band as they played a loud baroque music.
There was something depressing in the music. Harry felt like this was different… from the other scenes.
His instincts were right, as this time it wasn't them that flew by with the wind, the wind bought all these people around them. Through the walls and the ceiling, several ghost-like couple came to the dancefloor to join the others. With their pearlescent color, they stood out in the crowd. To their surprise, some waved at them. At the door, two servant looking men appeared and invited them in.
Marie's face showed bitterness as she put her hand on her heart. She felt it too, just like Harry…
The next jump took them to a sunny cemetery. There were very few crosses in the yard surrounding the small and gray church and even those were far from each other, some of them even fenced. It was beautiful. Harry only ever saw cemeteries that gave him a depressing feeling, however this small peaceful place, with wild flowers blooming in the green grass… made him feel warm inside. This must be a perfect place to rest eternally…
There were figures in black and red robes standing before one of the graves. Four of them. The sun was shining right above their shoulders so it was hard to see their faces.
Harry looked at the girl. She sighed, took his hand and walked towards the strangers. Harry became anxious, fearing what they would find written on the headstone. However, all his thoughts left his head as he noticed a fifth person at the grave, kneeling before it. Harry saw his long, dark hair and robes torn by the strong wind, just like how the pain was tearing his soul apart. Harry recognized Sirius.
'How… could this be?' he swallowed, trying to keep his tears from falling.
Sirius kept kneeling there, watching the name written on the headstone. In his hands, there were a few white flowers which he put into the vase. He wasn't crying; it looked like he couldn't cry anymore.
Harry couldn't believe his eyes. Were they in the past again?
Now they could also see the other grieving people. Severus, Rowena, Remus and Tonks were watching Black and the headstone with similar painful expressions. Both the couples stood holding hands, as if afraid of the wind tearing them apart. They looked older…
The children walked around the grave scared and felt shaken upon seeing the letters written on the headstone.
There were two graves there for a couple.
Harry James Potter
31. June 1981. – 5. September 2000.
Great Auror, loving husband and father
Killed by the hand of a traitor
Mary S. Potter
7. November 1980. – 4. May 2001.
Loving wife and mother
The victim of a broken heart
'Oh, Harry!' Marie whispered.
The boy felt her hand starting to shake as they stood there.
He looked away, not able to look at his own grave anymore. He was going to die. He was really going to die. Betrayed, just like his father. Voldemort was going to win…
Next to him, Marie hid her teary face in her hands and looked like her strength left her.
So this wasn't a dream… this really wasn't one…
He blinked as his sight became blurry with tears. With his hand, he cleared the tears away.
Starry night sky welcomed them near a lonely little house as the scene changed again. Every window shined with warm light. The two of them floated closer to look inside. A young woman with brown hair was rocking a crying baby; she was singing in a rocking chair. Her face was filled with love as she looked at the baby. Soon, a redhead man appeared and knelt next to them. He had a scar on the left side of his face. He covered the two with a warm blanket. The woman rewarded him with a kiss then they both turned to the small child. They stroked her face gently, and the little girl smiled at them. The woman got the messy black hair out of the baby's face and watched the girl's pale yellow-green eyes…
When Harry opened his eyes, they were back in bed in Hogwarts. Marie was lying on her side, crying, while the boy lay behind her, circling her with his arms. He didn't want to blink, though he wasn't able to anyway, and his trembling lips showed the turmoil in his soul.
"You feel that too, right?" the girl sniffed. "We're going to die, right?"
"Yes… Mary S…." Harry replied in a hoarse voice.
He also couldn't hold back his tears so they cried together.
"I didn't want to know…" Marie groaned. "I never wanted to know when… and how…"
Harry however, didn't know what to say. It would be too difficult. He couldn't process his own death, his own failure. Betrayal… There is nothing more disgusting than that. With his death, Voldemort's victory was granted. It hurt that he had to disappoint everyone. But the most painful was that his lover won't be able to live long without him and would follow him in half a year.
"Why did we have to see this? To… prepare?"
"You can't prepare for something like this…"
"I can't live my life knowing the exact date of our death… knowing what was going to happen to us…"
"Maybe…" Harry started. "…maybe… we won't have to."
He sat up and helped the girl to rise too.
"Tomorrow morning… we could go to Professor Trelawney… she teaches Divination… she's a seer. We could… have her record it… as a prophecy. Then we'll forget everything…"
"Forget? But how?"
"We could ask Professor Snape… to brew us a potion that will help… We can't live like this, always fearing that day… We have to have a full life… no matter how short it may turn out to be… We have to experience what we can. And who knows? Maybe… maybe we can change it…"
Marie didn't say anything; her eyes spoke instead. H cuddled close to the boy as they fell back onto the bed…
The two of them walked quietly in the deserted corridor. They were both dressed nicely, as if they were about to do something important. Holding hands, they neared the tower, where the Divination classes were being held. At the bottom of the stairs, they looked at the door with their hearts beating widely. Harry nodded and pulled the girl with him before she could change her mind.
Holding their breaths, Harry knocked on the door.
For a few moments, nothing happened. Harry was starting to think the professor was still asleep or not there at all… However, suddenly they heard noises.
"Yes?" Trelawney cracked open the door. "Oh, Potter and…"
"Professor… we have to talk to you about something very important!" the boy said intently.
"What is it about?" The woman adjusted her huge glasses. "It's very early and…"
"I had… another vision… WE had one. Since you're a seer… we would like to ask you to record it… just like how they do it with the prophecies in the ministry."
Trelawney looked at her student surprised but didn't send them away.
"Come in!" she said quickly. "I'll inform Professor Dumbledore at once!" she ran to the fireplace to make the call.
"No!" Harry yelled. "Please… not now…"
"We don't want anyone else knowing about it…" Marie added.
The teacher crossed her arms and looked at them questioningly.
"What kind of vision did you have with the help of your Inner Eye?"
Marie looked at the boy because she didn't understand what she was talking about. Harry shook his head signaling that it was not important and to let him handle it.
"We saw our future… and… death…"
"Ah, I knew it!" she put her hand on her heart. "I saw it!"
"Professor… can we proceed, please?"
"Yes! Of course!" she ran to the cupboard.
From her personal altar, she took a Pensive just like the ones Snape and the Headmaster have.
"Put what you saw here!" she pushed it in front of them as they all sat down.
"We don't really know how to do it…" Harry admitted.
"Oh, I see. Well, it's not that difficult. Take your wand and touch it to your forehead while concentrating on the pictures you saw. A real vision, Merlin's beard!" the woman thanked all she could. "How rare it is to see a real one! Of course, I always record what my Inner Eye shows me…"
Marie couldn't join in in her enthusiasm and watched the boy who took his wand after a big sigh.
Harry closed his eyes and shivered as the wand touched his skin. He tried to connect the disturbing memories to the wand because that was the only way to get them out.
In thought, he tied it to the wand and started to pull it slowly. He shivered at the weird feeling. It was like trying to get a cold, slimy thing out of his brain.
As he opened his eyes, he saw the wand pulling out a white thing towards the Pensive. His surprise made him forget how unpleasant the whole procedure was. As the memory left his brain, it coiled around the end of the wand as spaghetti on a fork.
"Good! Now carefully poke the Pensive with the wand."
Harry did as he was told and felt relieved as he saw his memories swirl around as Snape's and Dumbledore's had done.
"Did I do it well?"
"Yes, don't worry. Now, the young lady!"
"I… saw the same…" the girl tried to get out of it.
"I'm afraid we might need your memories too," the teacher said seriously. "It is possible that Potter's memories are void or damaged. Your vision could help supplement all he has missed. It just makes it more complete…"
"Don't worry, I'll be careful…" Harry calmed her, though they both smiled at his words." Relax… Do as the professor advised."
Harry tried to appear confident but was actually really nervous about messing up. If… the girl's mind got damaged because he did something stupid… Why didn't they call Dumbledore?!
However, everything went as good as before and the white thing coming from Marie's mind joined his in the Pensive. The two memories combined, showing pictures of what they saw in their dreams. Trelawney leaned closer and saw the five grieving people around the graves of the young Potter couple.
She looked at them with pity. Her usually ugly, bug-like eyes now showed sympathy and compassion.
She stood up without a word and went to a cupboard that she probably didn't use often as it was covered with a thick layer of dust. In a red velvet-lined box she put an opened glass sphere in front of them.
Harry immediately recognized it as a sphere that holds prophecies, just like the ones he saw in the Ministry of Magic. Just like the one that foretold his destiny…
The woman took it out with her long fingers and neared it to the Pensive. In the white mass appeared yellow lights. The thoughts held in the Pensive started to divide and three similar sized clouds were formed. One of them floated into the opened sphere and Trelawney quickly closed it.
"The other two are yours," the woman said as she put the sphere back into the box. "You can take it the way you put it in the Pensive."
Marie swallowed hard as Harry, after finishing with his memory, put the white thing back into her head. She got the pictures of the dream back, but she wasn't the least bit happy about it.
"Now… what are you going to do?" the professor asked tactfully.
"We would like to forget everything."
"But…"
"We were hoping to get your help in persuading Professor Snape how important it is… to make us a potion to get rid of everything we saw…"
The teacher looked at them surprised but couldn't deny them the help as she saw the worry on their faces… Something that made them too adult-like for a moment.
She nodded.
"I'm sure that Professor Snape won't oppose to it," she stood up. "True, that the Ministry has strict regulations regarding these memory-modifying potions, but… I think we can make an exception for you, Potter. Come with me! As soon as you drank the potion, I'll go and take…" she touched the box.
The three of them made their way down on the still empty corridors, though that wasn't a surprise in the middle of the holiday season. According to Hermione, there were less students staying at Hogwarts now, so there was less of a chance to run into someone.
However, on one of the corridors they met the two Gryffindor prefects as well as Remus and Tonks who were about to have breakfast in the Great Hall.
"Good morning!" Tonks greeted them happily. Her purple hair almost reached her waist even though it was braided.
Harry and Marie however, didn't feel happy about meeting them. Marie's eyes filled with tears and she threw herself at Hermione. Harry looked at Ron's face guiltily as he remembered the huge scar he had in his vision. He was afraid of the moment his friend will have to suffer that injury… At the same time, he felt grateful too, because apparently his loyal friends will take his orphaned child in.
It was a very strange feeling to know now that he was going to be a father sometime. Exciting and frightening at the same time. He never really thought about what it would like to be a parent, what tasks and obligations waited ahead. His momentarily happiness was quickly overshadowed by the fact that he wasn't going to be able to enjoy it for long because… he will die… He won't see his child growing up either. Just like his father…
"Marie, we have to go," he pulled the girl back sadly.
"Where are you going? It's okay, Marie!" Hermione tried getting out of the girl's tight embrace.
"To Professor Snape," Trelawney said hurriedly.
"Can't you do it after breakfast?" Ron touched his grumbling stomach.
"I'm afraid not…" Harry shook his head. "We… need a potion…"
The two prefects blushed, seemingly misunderstanding the situation. However Remus, after looking at Trelawney and the box in her hand, pieced things together.
"Harry! What happened? Did you have another vision?"
The boy barely visibly nodded.
"We want to forget it."
"Can we go with you?" Tonks asked softly.
"Only if you promise not to ask anything…"
"But…"
"Ron!" Lupin reprimanded him then nodded. "Alright."
He would have done anything to know what was making the boy miserable but he promised…
The seven of them continued their way towards the Potions Master's chambers. As they rounded the corner, they saw Rowena talking to Snape at the door. As soon as the couple noticed the small group approach, they stepped a bit farther away from each other.
"Rowena…" Trelawney greeted the woman with a nod.
"Sibyll…"
"Severus, I need your cooperation with something."
"How can I help you… all," Snape added as he realized that all of them were there to see him.
He let them all in and Trelawney stated her request.
"These two need a potion, "she pointed towards Harry and Marie "… that can get rid of a recent memory without anything left but doesn't cause serious loss of awareness."
"Why would you need something like that?"
"We have to get a dream out of our brains…" Harry said, then corrected himself before Snape could do it. "… our minds. A dream that was also… a vision."
He looked away immediately so he wouldn't meet the professor's eyes. Even thought last summer he finally learnt how to protect his mind, he knew that Snape was a professional when it came to Occlumency and Legilimency and so could penetrate his mind without being noticed.
"Wh… what?" he and Rowena were both surprised.
"What did you see? Voldemort?"
"Sorry, but… it's better if no one knows about it…"
"He's right, Severus," Trelawney agreed. "Will you help us?"
"I don't know… these potions are strictly regulated by law…"
"Please…!" Harry pleaded. It was the first time that day he started to fear about having to live with these memories. "We couldn't… we couldn't live with this…"
His voice rang with despair and made it obvious to all of them just how tragic what they saw was. Snape agreed finally.
"Alright… as you wish… But don't let any officers know about it… I could lose my job…" he made his way to his private lab.
They heard clanging for a few moments before he returned with a silver plate that had a vial with a green potion and two glasses on it. He sat down and invited everyone to do the same.
"You have to drink it in one gulp," he explained as he dipped the glasses into a transparent liquid then into sugar. Harry and Marie sat across him and watch excitedly as the man poured the thick potion into the glasses. "You have to concentrate on what you want to forget."
"Will it hurt?" Marie asked carefully.
"If you do as I tell you, then it won't…"
After he finished preparing the two drinks, he watched his work, as if not sure about proceeding.
"I promise to work harder on my potion-making skills from now on," Harry tried with a sad smile.
Snape grimaced with pity clear on his face then pushed the plate closer to them and stood up.
Harry and the girl took the two glasses and stood up as they looked at each other.
"Then…"
Harry quickly kissed her before they could drink the potion. He needed the strength he could only get from Marie, otherwise he probably wouldn't be able to do this. Marie looked at him touched.
"Cheers, Mary S." Harry said and gulped down his potion.
The girl did the same, albeit not as quickly and confidently.
They got dizzy from the potion and had to hold on to each other.
"I'm scared…" Marie looked at him.
Harry thought it best to hug her. That helped stabilizing him too. He felt everyone's eyes on him, especially Snape's. He noticed the man's attempts to get information before they became lost forever. He couldn't stop himself from showing the picture of the two graves… and his name on it.
The professor recoiled in horror…
Ten seconds later, the couple let go of each other in surprise.
"What… are we doing here?" Marie asked.
"I don't know…" Harry admitted. "Professor Snape, did we do something wrong again?"
"I have no idea…" the Potions Master lied and drank a few gulps of the green potion.
