THE BOY WITH THE PIERCING BLUE EYES

Chapter 38 – The greatest mischief (part 3)

They didn't have long to feel relieved. By the next day, half the teachers knew that Professor Snape's son fell ill. Professors came to visit and wish him well and Harry was beginning to feel scared about accidentally giving something away and getting discovered. After almost breaking his teeth while eating the cookie Hagrid made and brought along with Professor Dareling, he decided that it had to stop. He was waiting for his friend with folded arms.

"I've had enough! I can't take this anymore! My hands are healed enough to sometimes… What's wrong with you?"

Lamerin coughed and looked pale.

"Remember what I told you about the rain on Tuesday… well it rained… I think I caught something then…"

"But why didn't you cancel practice?" Harry asked while getting out of bed.

"Because Veronica thought the team was out of shape and no one else wanted to train in that stupid weather…"

"It seems you have a fever… We're switching back!" Harry ordered.

"But you have two more lessons…"

"I'll go. You helped more than…"

"No! I promised! We don't break our promises…" Lamerin looked at the photo of his father on the nightstand. "Not anymore…"

Harry agreed to continue but he wasn't too happy about it. He saw that switching places tired out the both of them and the more they met the more probable it became to infect each other and half the school.

At first, only the rarely gathering DA members started coughing, then their acquaintances and soon there were a few missing people from every house in each class. The teachers first thought of it as skipping class but when the two Ministry women along with Remus and Rowena also got sick they became more lenient.

Harry, despite being ill, felt stronger and more confident. He was ready to do what they've been planning for days now. Every time they switched places he planned the time they could finally figure out what had happened to the missing Weasley brothers.

Quite often, they needed to be crafty. Lamerin could only go to classes where there was no chance of being discovered. They crossed out Charms and Transfiguration on the list, because he found Hermione staring at his wand with a strange expression. They figured it out quickly; the girl noticed that the new Harry's wand didn't look like the one he usually used. Lamerin, once he had some free time, started reading the book Harry borrowed from the library under his name. It proved to be a difficult read because its language was ancient but since his friend did his job, he also tried to do his own.

Though some time had passed since the stealing, some students kept whispering when they saw how closely Stainthorp watched Harry's every move. He kept questioning where he was going and why and it started to get on his nerves. Until…

"I've noticed lately that you spend a lot of time with Lamerin," Remus said kindly but he still looked pale.

They boy realized how much he neglected his friends lately.

"I'm sorry for not visiting you… but I was sick too," he grimaced apologetically.

"It's okay. Do you want to have tea now?"

"Sure!"

"I hope you're not thinking about some mischief…"You know I wouldn't do that."

Lupin raised an eyebrow in amusement then invited the boy into his chamber.

He took out some cups along with milk and sugar, then nudged the kettle causing the water to boil.

Harry sat in the chair wringing his hands. He was on his way to Snape's chamber to switch with Lamerin and walk around the castle freely. However, Lamerin had already left for the Gryffindor tower. If it turned out that one Harry was playing chess with Ron and another one had tea with Remus… No, it was better not to think about the consequences.

"Um… are you okay? Is everything alright?" the boy asked nervously. "I saw that big scar on your neck. Does it hurt?"

"No, no. I got an excellent balm from Professor Sprout. It quickens the healing."

"Thank you," Harry said quietly as he took the cup offered to him. "Did anything happen lately?"

"You're saying that like we haven't seen each other for months," Remus sat down smiling. "I miss your company… and Tonks… you know she…"

While the man talked Harry squinted at him. Above Remus' shoulder the setting sun shined into his eyes and it bothered him a little. He felt terrible for not being honest with the man he loved and respected, but still… Lupin sat at the middle of the couch. Not on the edge to be closer to him. He was sitting in the middle like there was someone else sitting next to him.

'A deer… and a dog…' he remembered Marie's last words.

Impossible, he thought. It couldn't be that they were sitting there only an arm's length away… He couldn't… stand that…

Hidden from his sight the two men, Sirius Black and James Potter, sat on the couch and found it strange that the boy looked at not Remus but beside him. They felt like the boy was looking at them. James leaned forward with his hands clasped as he watched the boy clutching his cup while Sirius mused about how incredibly similar the two of them were. It was like seeing the younger version of the same man. He'd known Harry for many years, but the similarities always astounded him.

The boy closed his eyes sadly.

"Remus, I…"

"… and soon I'll join Severus."

"What?" Harry's head snapped up immediately.

"Now that the full moon is over and I pulled my self together, Severus might need me during the search."

"But…! You can't go too! Please think about it!"

"Professor Dumbledore agreed…"

"You'll be fired just like Professor Snape!"

"Who told you that Severus was going to be fired?" Lupin asked.

"I… just heard… Honeybourne wants it! And he would be happy if you too got sent away! Please don't do it!"

"It will turn out okay somehow," Remus sipped his tea mysteriously.

'This day just keeps getting worse!' Harry boiled inside. "I… I have to go now… Ron and Hermione are waiting for me… Sorry… But thanks for the tea."

"You're welcome. Come again… at least once before I leave."

"I promise…" They walked to the door.

Harry automatically started towards the Slytherin corridor, but Remus coughed.

"I thought you were going to the common room."

The boy pretended to be taking the wrong route accidentally.

"Oh yes… Thanks for reminding me!"

So he ran towards the stairs.

Remus went to his room to get his robes before going to Dumbledore's office. He was about to turn the corner when he heard someone arguing.

"How could you do this to me, you shameless bastard?! You humiliated me in front of the whole school, Harry Potter!" Cho Chang screamed to the boy who was stomping impatiently by the wall.

Remus watched them in awe. After all, Harry should not be in that part of the castle. What was he doing there?

"Would you please shut up?" he hissed. "Someone will hear!"

"Let them! Let them know what a jerk you are! You invite me to the ball then come here with your Muggle girlfriend!"

"And? That has nothing to do with you! Anyway, you asked me to the ball not the other way around! We're not going out anymore! Even…"

"You kissed her! In front of everyone! You never did that with me…!"

"Because you never let me! You think I had the courage to do that? Marie is different! Not like you! Not…"

"Not like what? Come on! Say it! What am I? Am I not good enough for the great Harry Potter?!"

"Stop this nonsense! I'm fed up with your constant tantrums! We have nothing to do with each other anymore! Leave me…"

"Now the stealing! How could you do something like that? Now everyone points at me and talks behind my back that I went out with someone like that!"

Harry was at the end of his patience.

"And so what! If you find it embarrassing then why are you arguing here with me? Leave me alone, I have something to do!"

"Good! I don't want to see you again, you jerk!"

"Jerk? ME?! Stupid buffoon!"

"WHAT DID YOU SAY?"

"What are you yelling out here?" McGonagall came out from one of the nearby rooms with Professor Flitwick. They both looked at the two disapprovingly.

"Twenty points from both houses," said the Charms teacher. He was a bit shocked since his students usually didn't behave like this. They went back into the room without saying anything else.

Cho stormed off without a word while Harry stood there for a while looking furious. His robes were caught on one of the armors and he managed to drag it with him which resulted in the loud clatter as the metal hit the stone floor and fell apart.

Harry ran off without a word afraid of the two professors coming out again. Remus also didn't wait for McGonagall to come out and went after Harry. He followed the boy unnoticed until…

"But these are Severus' chambers!" he stopped short when he found Harry walking in. "Go after him!" he commanded Sirius and James.

"We can't. The chambers are protected by a spell. Even we can't enter…" James said.

"But…!"

"Hide!" Sirius signaled when the door opened again and Lamerin dashed out.

"After him!"

All three of them followed the long-haired boy until they reached a corridor where he just disappeared. They didn't know that Harry, using Lamerin's appearance, went into the Room of Requirements.

"Where did he go?" Remus walked around in the corridor.

The two ghosts just shrugged. However, suddenly they heard footsteps. Remus listened, wondering which direction they were coming from. His jaw dropped when he saw Lamerin coming up the stairs they just used to go after him.

The boy stopped upon seeing him and it was evident that he didn't know what to do with the presence of the man.

"R-remus, hello," he greeted forcing on a smile.

"W-what are you doing here?" Lupin couldn't help but ask.

"Um… I… well… I wanted to go to the astronomy tower. The sunset is so beautiful, it must be pretty from up there," Lamerin lied.

"But it's not this way."

"R-really? I didn't know… it's my first time going there…"

The young Snape suspected that Remus wasn't in front of the Room of Requirement incidentally. He had to lure him away… somehow…

"Can you show me where it is?"

"Of course," the professor groaned and started walking. He sent a stern look towards the two ghosts to stay there.

"I don't understand anything… He was right in front of us! How could he be behind us?"

"I don't know! Lily!" James shouted, calling his wife.

The woman's head appeared from one of the walls which caused the two men to recoil.

"Yes?"

"Do you have to scare us like this?" Sirius snapped.

"I can just leave…"

"No! No, wait… Go after Remus and see where he goes with the Snape boy! Then follow the kid!"

"Why?"

"Something's not right here… he and Harry… they are working on something. I can feel it."

"I always knew that we have a great kid. If he can lead even his father by the nose…" the woman grinned then left.

Before James could say anything, Sirius remarked grimly.

"See, that's the reason I never got married."

They sat down on the floor and just looked around. After a while they started to get bored.

"I think he's long gone."

"Who?"

"Lamerin."

"You saw Remus going with him."

"I mean the one we were following."

"There is only one of him!"

"They how do you explain what we s…"

They heard someone approaching so they jumped up to be able to follow. They sat back disappointed when they saw it was Remus.

"So?" he gasped for breath. "Something suspicious?"

"Not even a dead man."

James looked at him indignantly.

"Okay, maybe that wasn't nice." Sirius acknowledged. "Sorry…"

Lupin started to think they weren't the best people to stay on guard.

"Did you pay attention at all or just sat on the floor?"

"I can't sit on the floor," James leaned against the wall. However, the stone wall didn't hold him up and he fell through. It looked funny as only his lower half was visible and his upper half appeared to be built into the wall.

"I told you he should have turned into a donkey instead," Sirius said.

Remus snorted, amused by his friends' behavior.

"I'm so blessed with the two of you…"

But then a door appeared in front of them.

"Hey Moony, do it again!" Sirius said quickly.

"What?"

"Lean into the wall!"

"I don't think that made the door appear!"

However, the lock clicked and a haggard-looking Lamerin stepped out.

James and Sirius cried out in surprise and Remus didn't know what to say. The boy also paled as he noticed them.

"La-la…" Lupin stammered. "Lamerin!"

"Remus, wow!"

"Where have you been?"

"Um… the toilet," Harry shrugged. "And you? What are you doing here?"

"We… I was just passing by…" Remus shook his head. He was really confused.

"Then… bye…" Harry left them and started towards the Slytherin corridor.

He didn't want to risk going to the Gryffindor tower now. If the man followed him, he would become suspicious.

Remus, forgetting about going to the headmaster, walked back to his room with wide eyes.

"How is this possible? I went to the astronomy tower with him! You were paying attention, right?"

The two ghosts nodded. At one of the corridors they met Lily.

"I think I saw a ghost!" she said. "The boy! He went in twice but didn't come out at all!"

The three men looked at each other meaningfully.

"Where the hell have you been?" Harry exclaimed when he found Lamerin sitting on his bed. "Didn't we agree to do it tonight?"

"I know. But Remus caught me!"

"What?" his friend felt dizzy for a moment.

"When I was going to the Room of Requirement, he was waiting there! What was he doing there?"

Harry raised his eyebrows.

"When I came out he was still there… It's over…"

"Do you think… he suspects something?"

"I think he knows everything."

"Then… what do we do now?"

"We'll do it tomorrow! W can't wait any longer! The more we drag this out the more people can figure it out! Today was a disaster! So tomorrow! Tomorrow night!"

The next day, Harry went to his lessons because they were afraid of Lamerin betraying himself in his nervousness. He avoided Remus who looked at him suspiciously.

"What is his problem with you?" Ron whispered during lunch. "I know you were terrible at fencing last week but that's no reason to…"

"I don't know…" Harry muttered while picking some steamed vegetables. "Hey Ron," he put his spoon down as an idea came to mind. "As my very best friend, would you do me a favor tonight?"

Harry lit the white candles in the Room of Requirement. They illuminated the bare walls and the little table with the white cloth on it which he was going to use. On the table, numerous small candles were already lit.

Lamerin burst into the room.

"Are you okay? You didn't get caught?" Harry asked immediately.

"Nope!" the young Snape grinned. "I can imagine how mad he is with Ron and his questions!"

"We owe him a lot for this."

"Leave it to me. He'll get his reward for distracting Remus."

"You dressed up…"

"You too," Lamerin looked at Harry who was wearing elegant robes. "Are you sure you want to summon him?" he picked up the picture of a messy haired teenage boy from the table.

His friend nodded sadly.

"At least we know for sure that he's dead…"

"It smells so good in here…" Lamerin sighed as the smell of lemon grass, lavender and grass mixed in the room. "I'll be next to you. But you need to summon him…"

"I'm a little scared," Harry admitted.

"If all goes well, you'll see him soon…"

Harry knelt before the small table and took one last look at the stolen 'Summoning and Enchantments' book. He knew the spell by heart now, but seeing the book gave him strength.

Blood of my blood, the spirit of love,

Soul, pervade this dark room.

Come to us from below and above,

As this bell rings in gloom.

First, he chanted the verse softly as if not wanting to confront what it would cause. At the last words, he rang the small bell they stole from Mrs. Norris' collar the other day.

Lamerin knelt not too far from him, but far enough not to disturb. He felt like this spell was much more peaceful than the one used long ago by the people who wanted to know his parents. That was so violent and terrifying...

Suddenly, the flames flared up causing both of them to jump. Harry dropped the bell and it rolled away. He sat back on his heels and a tear ran down his cheek.

His father's figure emerged from the flames…
