A NEW ENEMY OR IS IT AN OLD ONE?
Oswin and John had decided to have their date on one of the greatest vacation spots in the universe: Sorvad V. It was a well-known intergalactic pleasure spot where all of the great and the good in the universe went to have fun. In other words, it was a hangout for the universe's super rich. Oswin felt completely out of place there from the start but John loved it.
John eventually noticed how uncomfortable Oswin looked and asked, "What's wrong?"
"I just don't feel as though I belong here. Everyone's staring at me. It's because I don't have a boatload of cash or a super long pedigree. They can all tell somehow," Oswin said.
"They don't know anything, Oswin. They're all staring at you because you're so beautiful. I'm the envy of everyone here because I brought you along with me. That's all it is. You shouldn't feel so inadequate. You have just as much right to be here as anyone else. Besides that, you're famous. You're the Empress of the Daleks and a Guardian of Time. They should let you in here for that alone," John said proudly.
"Thanks, John. I guess I'm just not used to places like this. I'll try to enjoy it for the rest of the day for the sake of this date. I hope I haven't been ruining it too much," Oswin said.
"You're not ruining it at all. Stop worrying so much, Oswin. Why are you so nervous for anyway?" John asked.
"It's just that I haven't been on a date in a while. I guess that and this place are making me feel a bit uneasy. I'm sorry. I'll try to relax more," Oswin said.
"If you don't like it here, we could always go somewhere else. I just want you to have a good time," John said.
Oswin smiled at him as she said, "You're sweet. No, I'll be fine. I don't know what it is. I just feel nervous today as if something's wrong."
"You didn't have one of those visions that you had just before Odd Bob showed up, did you?" John asked in concern.
"How did you know about that?" Oswin asked.
John looked a little embarrassed before he finally said, "Epsilon told me about it. He thought that I should know. He wanted me to keep an eye out for you just in case another vision happened and to get you to him as soon as possible if it didn't stop this time."
Oswin's eyes filled with anger, and she almost growled as she said, "Is he ever going to stay out of my life? He's not my dad!"
"I'm sorry, Clara. I should have told you, but I knew that it would upset you. I'm sorry. I just wanted you to have a good date, and I've gone ahead and ruined it by mentioning it," John said.
"What did you say?" Oswin asked in surprise.
"I said I was sorry for mentioning it," John said.
"No, you called me Clara. Why did you do that?" Oswin asked out of curiosity.
"That's who you are. I know that you're calling yourself Oswin, but Clara is who you really are. I won't call you that if you don't want me to," John said.
"No, it's okay. You can call me Clara if you want. It feels good to hear that name again," Oswin said with a smile.
"So you're not mad at me?" John asked.
"No, not at all. I didn't have any visions this time. I just have this uneasy feeling for some reason. You don't think that's another Guardian thing, do you?" Oswin asked.
"I honestly don't know. You know more about this kind of thing than I do. If it is a warning though, I wish that it would be a bit more specific," John said.
"Since when are warnings about the future ever specific?" Oswin asked with a grin.
"Since never. That's what's so annoying about them. You'd think that if you were going to get a vision of the future that it would be a complete one or why bother?" John said.
"I'll take it up with the Universe sometime if I ever get the chance," Oswin said with a giggle.
She was beginning to feel better already. John put his arm around her, and she didn't protest. She actually liked it. She was starting to like being with him, and she was now glad that she had decided to give him a chance.
"Clara, you seem to feel a little better now. Are you enjoying yourself more?" John asked.
"Yeah, I am. I guess I just needed to get back into the flow of dating again. I'm a little rusty at it," Oswin said.
She was surprised at how easily she was responding to the other name now. It didn't feel weird or wrong at all. It felt perfectly natural to be called Clara once again.
"That's a shame especially with someone as beautiful as you," John said.
"Is that a line?" Oswin asked.
"Usually but with you it's the truth. Ever since I've met you, I don't feel any need to use any lines or to even needlessly flirt anymore. Not with you. It's weird but it's almost as if I can be myself around you in a way that I've never felt that I can with anyone else," John said.
Oswin smiled at him as she could see by the look in his eyes that he was being completely honest with her. She had to admit that she was beginning to feel the exact same way around him. She was letting him call her Clara after all. She didn't let anyone call her that not even Marissa.
The two of them stared into each other's eyes for a moment, and then Oswin felt herself drawn to him. He obviously felt the same because he drew closer and closer to her. Their faces were now just a few inches away from each other. She closed her eyes in anticipation as she prepared to kiss him.
Then she heard a woman's voice say, "EXTERMINATE!"
Oswin and John both whirled around to see that they were surrounded on all sides by Dalek puppets. Everyone around them had been turned into partial Daleks with an eyestalk coming out of their forehead and a gunstick coming out of the palm of their hands. The people all started to fire on them at once, and Oswin automatically encased herself and John in her force field as they started to run.
"What's going on?" John asked in confusion as the two of them ran as fast as they could from the massive army of converted humans behind them.
Oswin's eyes momentarily glowed as she used her newly enhanced senses as a Guardian in order to confirm what she already knew.
"There's a Dalek nanocloud all over this planet just like there was all over the Dalek Asylum. It's been slowly converting everyone here into Daleks. It must have just finished converting them. That's why everyone kept staring at me and why I kept getting that ominous feeling. Stupid Guardian senses! Why couldn't you give me more of a warning than a stupid feeling of uneasiness?!" Oswin said in dismay.
"I guess that's like your Clara Sense. It makes you feel nervous whenever you're in danger," John speculated.
Oswin looked at him in sudden alarm as she said, "How are you feeling? Are you having any feelings of anger or hate?"
"I'm feeling fine. I don't think that the nanocloud can bother me because I'm half Time Lord," John said.
Oswin looked at him in surprise for a minute until she remembered something very important that had only just happened recently for her. "So Penny's going to stay a Time Lord then," Oswin said.
"What makes you think Penny is my mother?" John asked coyly.
"Oh, please! You have her eyes and ears, and she's an immortal Time Lord who's married to your dad. Do I need to be a brain surgeon to figure it out?" Oswin said with a smirk on her face.
"I'm sorry. I automatically deny everything about my past or outright lie about it in order to protect myself. It's something that I've done all of my life so I don't accidentally get erased from existence," John explained.
"You don't have to do that with me. You can always be completely honest with me," Oswin said.
"I'm beginning to realize that, yeah," John said with a smile.
"It was all a trap. Someone knew that I was coming here and set a trap for me. I hope that I can't still be converted. I don't want to wind up as a Dalek again," Oswin said in a worried voice.
"Guardians are immune to it. They're way beyond its power to effect," John said as if he were absolutely certain of that. Oswin realized that he probably was. He was from the future after all.
"Well, that's good to know. Now all I have to worry about is being killed. Aren't I lucky?" Oswin said with a chuckle.
"I'm not even sure that you can be killed now, but then again you haven't finished learning about your powers yet so who knows?" John said.
"Thanks. You make me feel so much better," Oswin said as she scowled at him.
"Sorry. I was just thinking out loud. You told me to be honest with you," John said defending himself.
"Not that honest," Oswin said with an amused grin on her face.
Suddenly there was nowhere left to run, and Oswin knew that she was going to have to fight whether she wanted to or not. The converted humans continued to fire on Oswin and John as they attacked them in wave after wave while they hid behind Oswin's force field. She knew that her force field wouldn't last forever under this kind of assault and that the puppets were never going to stop attacking so she was finally forced to come to a decision.
Oswin began to glow with power as she said, "I hope this works."
"You hope what works? What are you doing?" John asked.
Oswin suddenly started going on the attack at last as she used her Guardian powers to knock all of the Dalek puppets around her unconscious at once in one massive stun blast that radiated out from her in all directions. Then she mentally reached out to the nanocloud itself and started to rewrite it as she hacked into its programming.
"What's going on?" John asked in confusion.
"I'm going to use the nanocloud itself to fix everything. I'm making it my puppet," Oswin said with a mischievous smile on her face.
Under Oswin's control, the nanocloud quickly rewrote all of the converted humans back to their original human selves. She smiled in triumph as soon as she could feel that everyone was fully back to normal. Then she harmlessly dispersed the nanocloud as she ordered it to destroy itself.
"Oswald for the win!" Oswin said with glee.
"Oh, is that where that came from?" John asked.
"It was originally my user name for the Wi Fi," Oswin said sheepishly.
Then the sound of clapping reverberated around the area, and the two of them turned to see a beautiful young brunette woman in her early twenties wearing a long Victorian dress standing there with a large malevolent smile on her face. She casually walked toward them with seemingly no fear at all of the woman who had just singlehandedly defeated a planet full of Dalek puppets in a matter of minutes.
"That's very good, Clara. Very good. It doesn't surprise me though. You were always very ingenious. You certainly foiled enough of my plans, didn't you?" the woman said.
"Who are you, and how do you know my real name?" Oswin asked in concern.
She could feel great power radiating from this woman. Her stupid Guardian senses wouldn't tell her any more than that though. She really wished that they would just say 'This is so and so, and this is why they want to kill you.' It would really come in handy sometimes.
"I'm sorry but I can't take the time to memorize the face of everyone who wants to kill me. Who are you again?" Oswin asked.
"Oh, you wouldn't recognize me with this face. Don't even bother to try. Let's just say that I'm an old acquaintance of yours and leave it at that," the woman said.
"Well, that's annoying. So am I just supposed to say 'Hey, you!' when I'm talking to you then? Come on then and give me some kind of name. If you don't, then I'm just going to call you Nina. I love that name, Nina," Oswin said in a slightly mad voice.
The woman laughed as she said, "I see that your sense of humor hasn't gone. You can call me Victoria if you wish. That is the name of the original inhabitant of this body but still not my own."
"You're all dark and mysterious, aren't you? I love dark and mysterious. Wait a minute. No, I don't. Why are you here?" Oswin asked.
"The renegade Daleks are so desperate to destroy you that they came to me looking for help. I am their new ally. At least I am for the moment anyway. I have no illusions about how long that will probably last. Still at the moment we have a common goal. Killing you," Victoria said.
"Well, aren't you all just so considerate? You'll excuse me if I'm not exactly cooperative in that goal, won't you? So you sent the nanocloud after me I take it?" Oswin asked.
"No, that was the Daleks' idea. I just came to see how you responded to it. Your power is growing more and more by the day. Soon you may even be a match for me. Not just yet though. At the moment though, I can still destroy you; and I will very soon now," Victoria said with a sinister smile.
"You know you have a really lousy sense of timing. I was on a date you know, and I was actually enjoying myself for once. Couldn't you have come along at a better time?" Oswin asked in irritation.
"It's a major universal entity. It doesn't make appointments when it drops by to kill you, Clara," John said.
"I see that you've finally found someone just as droll as you are, Clara. Don't worry. I wouldn't think of attacking you now when you're expecting it. When I do come for you though, it will be at a time and place of my choosing. You'll never even see it coming, and then and only then will I tell you who I really am. I want you to know who it is who finally destroyed you. Then after you're gone, I'll go after the other two Claras and destroy them as well. After that, I will finally go up against the Doctor and his precious Rose. All of them will fall to me, and I will finally have my revenge at last. Not even a changed timeline will stop me from getting it," Victoria said just before she vanished into thin air.
"Well, she was sweet. Who was she?" John asked.
"I think that I know but I'm not sure. The person that I'm thinking of wasn't a woman though. Of course it wouldn't be past him to suddenly swap genders in order to confuse me. If it is who I think it is, we're going to have to be very careful, John," Oswin said.
John smiled at her remark which caused Oswin to say in a frustrated voice, "What are you smiling about? I have a psycho working with the renegade Daleks to kill me. Doesn't that concern you at all?"
"Yeah, it does. Don't think that it doesn't. What's making me smile though is that you said 'we'. Does that mean that we're going to have another date?" John asked.
"Oh, I might keep you around for a while and see how you work out. I mean you didn't run away from me screaming after everything that just happened so I think that tells me that you're loyal at least," Oswin said as she leaned in to kiss him again.
"Either that or I'm really desperate to kiss you," John said.
"That's even better," Oswin said with a warm smile just before the two of them finally had their first kiss.
"Was it worth the wait? Do you think you'll stick around?" Oswin asked.
"I think I'll keep you around for a while and see how you work out," John said echoing her earlier words and made her laugh.
"That's fine by me. Just so you know though if you stay with me you'll probably have more Daleks and psychotic men and women out to kill you before all is said and done," Oswin warned.
"Bring them on. I'll fight through all of them just to get another kiss," John joked.
"I'm not that good, am I?" Oswin asked in disbelief.
"Let me give you my answer to that," John said as he kissed her again.
Somewhere nearby a figure in a white robe stood watching them for a moment before fading away. She had been there to intervene in case 'Victoria' decided to strike because she knew that Oswin wasn't ready to face someone like that just yet. Luckily, it hadn't come to that yet. She knew that it would soon though. Victoria was just another tool in the war against them all by their true enemy. That war was coming soon, and she dreaded it. It seemed that she was destined to have her fate always tied up with that of the Guardians no matter what she did to avoid it.
Next: Just what has Davros been up to lately anyway? Surely he's not giving up his dreams of universal genocide just because his sister told him to, is he? The answer may shock you.
