Chapter 15:
Wind whistled past my ears, along with the gentle brush of something soft against my arms and legs. Birds chirped like a choir all around, the gentle roar of water close by. My body felt heavy, though not a bad heavy, like I just woke up from a very deep and restful sleep.
"Al..." I shot up in surprise at the voice, having not heard anyone coming. The sudden brightness burned my eyes for a brief moment, causing me to groan and lay back down as the stars in my eyes faded.
"Ally..time .. to...wake up
"Dad?" I finally stood upright I rubbed both of my eyes furiously till they finally adjusted to the light. All around me was tall green green grass, as long as my arm, flowing like a emerald ocean. Rolling hills were all around and distance mountains shown dark blue on the horizon with white capped tops. Fog hugged the ground like a thick blanket, the sunlight barely filtering through.
I looked around the fog, squinting in a vain attempt to see where the voice was coming from. "Dad!" I called out desperately, "Where are you?" A dark shape suddenly formed on the edges of my vision, turning about like they too were looking for someone. The figure one I had seen many times before.
"Dad!" I shouted in relief and happiness. I started sprinted to him, quickly closing the distance not giving him enough time to turn completely around. Hugging him tightly I buried my face into his back feeling safer than I had in, what seemed like years.
"Alexa?" That voice I remember thinking. I shot back as if burned, the fog slowly lifting the sun coming through in small rays. I should have known, the figure was too tall, not as barrel chested, much lankier than my father.
This person was roughly around my age, though a good half foot or more taller. Dressed in simple jeans and a dark blue plaid shirt, things dad never wore.
"Alexa?" Alfred's voice broke through to me as I finally looked him in the face. He seemed as surprised as I was. His bright sky blue eyes twinkled behind his wire rimmed glasses. His hair the exact color as my own, was combed neatly, though one stubborn piece seemed to defy gravity and stick up.
"Alfred," I gasped and replied slowly relaxing my tensed muscles. Though once that happened a gust of frigid air blew directly towards me, my re
Axed body was quickly pushed backwards a few inches. I could see Alfred reaching out towards me, I reached out towards his stretched arm, our fingers barely brushing before I was sent tumbling backwards through the air, the colors all mixing I to swirls like a Van Gogh painting until it all faded to black.
"Wake up kid," Another blast of cold air blasted in my face shocking me to sit up straight. I was scared at first seeing unusual surroundings. The cold winter landscape outside was separated by tinted glass. I was wrapped like a caterpillar in multiple blankets, I sat next to a duffel bag spilling over with clothing, another couple blankets, as well as a black revolver sat on the piles of fabrics glinting menacingly in the light.
My head pounded like a warm drum, my throat parched and sore, my body felt like it had been thrown through the dryer on high. "Ugh," I groaned pulling the blanket back over my face. "Why won't the lights shut up," I muttered.
"Don't be such a wimp," I peaked out from under the blankets to the front of the car. I then recalled about how I fell in the snow and the redhead, Ingrid she had said, helped me and put me in her car. She was sitting in the drivers seat. completely leaned back, her snow boots propped up on the dash. The smell of the burrito in her hand reached my nose before I saw it, though that didn't stop my mouth from watering. "It's 'bout time you woke up kid," Ingrid spoke, mouth full of food, with a roll of her eyes. "You've been knocked out back there for hours. Thought you went brain dead till you started talking a few minutes ago," Ingrid took another bite of her burrito while gazing thoughtfully out the window. "Kept mumbling 'Dad,' or 'Alfred,'" SHe looked back at my most likely embarrassed face though rolled her eyes. "Don't worry a lot of people suffer from nightmares. Especially with all the fightin' going on, a lot more will to," Silence floated between us for a few minutes, all that was going through my mind was gfhe delicious smell of the food in her hand.
She finally took note of my longing gaze at her food and laughed a little, then pulled out another one from a paper bag next to her. I grabbed it in a flash and tore into it like a ravenous animal. She seemed shocked yet amused as I tore into the food and finished within seconds.
"When was the last time you ate?" She laughed lightly. I licked my fingers then wiped my mouth before replying.
"I don't know what day is it?"
"December 25th." Ingrid shrugged.
"Then five days ago." I told her rubbing my eyes. A look of understanding based over her face along with sympathy.
"So where you are from kid?" Ingrid asked going back to her burrito.
"New York City," I replied looking out the window at the snow outside.
"Wow, than you're a long way from home," Ingrid whistled swallowing her last bit of food. "New York is about fifty miles back that away," she pointed her thumb vaguely in the direction of the back of the car. "No wonder you collapsed. Must have been a work out, did you walk or catch a ride?"
"I-I don't remember," I replied. "I only remember running, wanting to get away."
"I don't blame ya," Ingrid shrugged in understanding. "With all the fighting going on everyone is running somewhere. They say New York is the worst, one of the biggest war zones not counting Los Angeles and Chicago."
"I don't remember much." My voice broke through the lie. Ingrid looked sympathetic, before sighing again. She seemed to do that a lot.
"Well now that you're awake you can tell me where you're headin' at least. I may not look it but I'm getting out of here."
"To where?" I asked.
"Canada, rumors say that the government there is sneaking refugees over the border. When the fighting broke out and word got around. Foreign nations sent planes and soldiers to get their citizens out of the US. Americans had tried and sneaked on to the planes but once they are caught they were thrown off. But Canada is the safe haven," she smirked, "always had and always will be. Everyone else is heading north, me included." She looked skeptically at me. "Where did you say you were going?"
"I didn't say." I answered. When I thought about it, I didn't know where I was going. Home wasn't an option, New York was a war zone, and I hadn't lived anywhere else other than NYC. Dad didn't have any relatives so there wasn't anyone for me to turn to. "I don't know," I answered truthfully. "There isn't anywhere for me to go."
"Don't ya have any family looking for you?" Ingrid inquired.
"No," my voice broke again as my eyes watered. "I don't have anyone," I sniffled feeling more abandoned and alone then I had in days. The tears started to roll down my face as I furiously wiped them away, trying to stop them.
"Alright stop the water works," Ingrid sighed in annoyance. "You can stay with me until you find somewhere to get off. We can part ways there." She took her feet off the dash, before restarting the car.
"R-really?" I stuttered in disbelief.
"Yes really," Ingrid snapped again. "Now stop crying."
"Thank you!" I leaped over the driver's seat and hugged her tightly. "I promise I won't cause any trouble. I don't know how to repay you!"
"You can repay me by letting go," Ingrid's strained voice rasped out. Quickly I let go as she gasped for air.
"Alright as long as you never hug me again we are even alright?" She rubbed her throat wincing slightly. "How's a kid like you so strong?" She asked to herself more than me.
"I'm stronger than I look," I said proudly. "And don't call me kid you're no older than me!"
"I'm the driver so I call you whatever name I want," Ingrid joked a little.
Ingrid stopped at a stop sign and checked her folded up map.
"Don't you have a GPS?" Alexa asked from the passenger's seat. She was dressed in borrowed clothes that hanged loose and baggy around her tiny body. Ingrid made a note to herself to get her some better fitted clothes.
"No."
"I'm sure we can find one for a cheap price-"
"We're not getting a GPS; you can be tracked by those things." Ingrid decided to ignore her new traveling companion as she scanned over the map. They were in Pennsylvania, passing Allentown yesterday made it official. Luckily, the suburbs of this state haven't pulled into any firefights, yet.
She turned on the radio, searching for any news for Pennsylvania, so far it was a Philosopher dominated state but the Expansionists from Maine and New York will make their way into the major cities in due time. Ingrid had a slim chance to drive to Canada without being spotted by either party, but if Alexa wanted to stay in the States she will need some sort of ID.
"We're outside Jonestown right now, it's a small town. No one will bother us there."
"Why are we going to Jonestown?" Alexa asked.
"You need to get an ID and some extra cash never hurts."
A loud, screeching beep resounded from the radio. Ingrid reacted quickly, playing with the dial trying to hear the message from the funding parties.
"What is it?" Alexa asked, worried about Ingrid's sudden panic.
"It's an airway hijack message from the parties; they've been doing this for the past week. Mostly just threatening each other, but sometimes they give away clues to where they will strike."
Once Ingrid found a stable station, she hushed Alexa as she was about to ask another question. She then strained her hearing for the incoming message from the Expansionists. She wrinkled her nose at the sound of his voice.
"Hello my fellow Americans, I am deeply sorry for the inconvenience we are causing across the country. But soon, all of you were realize that this is all for a greater good."
'Greater good, my ass,' Ingrid thought bitterly.
"But there is way to end these petty battles. We are looking for a young Caucasian girl, age eighteen, blond hair with blue eyes and at the height of 4'9. Her name is Alexa James and we will pay 50,000 dollars to anyone that brings her to us; dead or alive."
The message dies and Ingrid slowly turned to the young girl. Alexa was looking back at her with wide, scared eyes as her hand, slowly reached for the door handle. She had to give the girl props, she wasn't stupid. But Ingrid was smarter.
She locked the doors and held Alexa by her shoulder, "No sudden movement or I'll break your arm."
Alexa glared, "Are you going to hand me over to them."
"Hell no." she hissed. "All I want to know is why you didn't tell me you were being targeted by the Expansionists."
Alexa stuttered slightly, "I don't know."
Ingrid tore her hand away and rolled her eyes, "Bullshit," she whispered to herself. She sighed, "Fine, keep your secrets but if you want to travel with me, you need to make some changes."
