"You're telling me," Artemis said rather calmly. "That back at the end of the Golden Age, when they were deciding their domains," Artemis said slowly. This was too much. Percy raised an eyebrow. He wondered how gods would take if they knew. He wondered how Poseidon (he spat the name in his mind) would react if he knew.
"You're saying Poseidon's nature was drawn to all of the three domains?" She spills out fast. And the moment she said it, the statement sank in. And her head was bombarded with all the things that that statement implied. Percy only nodded glumly. He looked away again.
"He knew his younger brother wanted to be king, and he knew his older brother had a right to be king, and so when he felt all of those domains calling out to him, he literally ran away from the choosing of the domains. He went to Hestia seeking for help. I mean, she is the oldest one of them so it made sense to go to her. They had discussed it for a while. Zeus and Hades assumed that when he ran away, it was because Poseidon realized that both of them wanted to be king and that he wanted too so he ran away to delay the choosing and think of a plan or something. Well, he did come up with a plan, if you think about it.
"He made a sacrifice," Percy sighed still looking at the other side of a room. "What sacrifice?" Artemis said in case Percy was too caught up in his own thoughts. Artemis had never seen Percy Jackson so…brooding. But immortality does change people.
"Well, gods are energies with consciousness right? He literally took away all those conflicting energies within him, though the energies with different natures seemed to be harmonious with each other, and locked it away along with all his memories. Well, except for the essential ones like who he was, how to use what was left of his powers, though he didn't know almost all of his powers were gone. You know, just enough memory so that he wouldn't question why he had so few. All in all, all it had left him was sea energy and a bunch of memories. His personality changed a bit with the memory wipe. So it did the thing it was likely to do, his personality personified the sea."
"Where did he lock all of his energies then?"
"I can't say it," Percy says. "Why?" Artemis asks. "No, I mean, I literally can't say it. There's a spell on it: The Right of Secrecy. Only from the mouths of those who casted the spell can you hear the truth. I can't say it. When I try to form it in my mouth, it gets jumbled up. When I try to right it, I mix it up. And when I try to spell it out, I even forget it itself. Then when I give up trying, I remember it completely."
Artemis nodded. It was understandable such a spell was placed on the secret. "Even Poseidon doesn't know about this." He adds and Artemis nodded again. "And even if you found it, it's near impossible to utilized and unlock. There's only one thing that can open it. And there's only one person it'll go to: Poseidon. Once it goes back to him, then you can steal it, which is like not recommended since he'll have powered up."
If you think about it, Artemis thought, it'd explain a lot of the sea god. His nature. Why there were times where he was as cruel as the sea, and calm and good natured at sometimes.
"There was a time when the memories slipped." Percy said. "I think that was what caused Poseidon to put Zeus into the golden net. I mean, not all of his memories slipped. All he knew was that he had power over all this and that. And all he thought was, why not? I have every right on the throne as Hades does, much more than Zeus does. Hestia sorted it out. And instead of overthrowing him, well you know the rest.
"And this was also what caused all those, Odysseus incident of his and all those things he killed. I mean, the domain of a god would somehow personify the god's personality. But he was the other way around. His personality was at the mercy of the nature of the sea." Percy muttered the last part grudgingly. "All this the Trident showed you?" Artemis asked. Percy laughed bitterly, "and more."
"Did it tell you of the weakness of the gods?" she asks. Percy shook his head. "Nah, found that out accidentally." Artemis looked at him waiting for an explanation. Percy finally started looking her at the eye and not drifting off to who knows where in his head since it wasn't about his father anymore. "You know I met Horus and Isis?" He says and Artemis mouth fell. "You met the Egyptian Gods?!" She exclaimed. Percy laughed.
"Oh c'mon, Artemis. Out of nowhere you told us there were Roman Gods. Or at least, they were different versions of you. I had centuries with me here, and it wouldn't be far off if I had assumed that there were Egy—" Artemis glared and raised an eyebrow at him
"Okay, okay, okay, you got me. It was Annabeth's assumption back in the day," He grumbled and pouted. Artemis laughed. Percy was shocked to had made Artemis laugh. And Artemis just laughed more. She was actually raising an eyebrow at her because she was amused at how casually he had addressed her. "I just remembered her assumption, and acted on it, happy now?" He pouted.
"Ah, didn't hurt that I met Carter before the Giant War, so I kinda had a lead," Percy says. And Artemis was about to ask how he had met the Egyptian Hero but it seemed like a long story. "Anyway, their gods' weakness was their," Percy paused and whispered so low, "shadow."
Artemis nodded. "So I assumed, you've got to have a shadow or a version of shadow of your own, yeah?"
"Nico cut it out!" Thali said. The cave was making her sick and Nico kept on letting their shadows change shape and dance around them. He laughed. "Ah, just concentrate on the scrolls essence or something" he says.
They went further to the hidden tunnel. Nico sniffed at the air. "It smells like death"
