Steven took a deep breath as he felt his gem vibrate with magical energy. "You're doing good Steven now gather it like i showed you and let it flew." Steven felt the energy coursing through his body gathering into his hands before he clapped them together and thrusted them put forward as if pushing a box. An invisible wave of magical energy washed over Diamond as he felt it move through his hair. "I don't believe it." Steven could see, well in a manner of speaking, like a wave his magic had washed over everything in front of his and he could see it like he was picturing it in his mind. It was everything around him in a sort of pinkish filter, while he couldn't make out color he could see in so much detail despite it. He could see the rock Diamond was sitting on he could see the cracks in the roch both on the outside and deeper within.
Best of all it wasn't a still picture Steven could see movement! He saw how Diamond changed positions going from cross-legged to having his feet touch the ground, heck he could even feel Diamond's feet touch the ground! It was a ripple of motion that he could almost taste. Then Diamond stood up and walked to the side out of the range of Steven's magical wave and Steven could still see him even though everything else was pitch black around him like he was standing in a void. "Pretty cool right?" Steven nodded. "We're making great time for now so why don't we practice this for a while." Diamond's forearm glowed and changed and Steven was surprised to see a cannon take its place. 'Cool' diamond blasted the rock he's sat on and it exploded into pieces. "Count the fragments." At first he was annoyed until he noticed them all glowing in the dark and his magic leaking out of them.
"I-I can see them and the ground around them?" Diamond patted him on the head. "You got it as your magic spreads out it can highlight and make you aware of whats around objects touched by your magic. Now lets share our eyes." Diamond touched Steven's gem linking their sight together and leaving Steven staring at himself. "The hard part about this is you see from the object outwards like it had eyes and you're seeing through them." Diamond grabbed a rock and filled it with energy before throwing it several dozen yards away before a pulse swept through the place letting Steven see himself in the distance away only a blur. "Its a little off putting but it won't grate on your vision."
Diamond let go returning Steven's 'vision' to normal. "You said you had healing spit, has it help you at all?" Steven shook his head. "I haven't gotten my healing powers to work for a while now and even if i could i don't think i can heal myself with them. I need my moms fountain." Diamond nodded gathering power. "Brace yourself." A massive surge nearly knocked Steven off his feet but he'd summoned his shield and shifted its shape to plant into the ground. They'd been working on this for the majority of their travels, given most of the journey was by foot or with public transportation as two blind people weren't allowed to drive a car. Diamond rolled his shoulders. "Theres a gas station close by about twenty miles that way, if we hoof it we could be there in a couple minutes, if were lucky we'll be able to hitch hike. If now we'll wheel it like we've been doing."
Steven nodded creating a sphere around them before climbing up and balancing himself of Diamond's shoulders. "Do you think they'll have a phone we could use?" Diamond got the ball rolling as fast as he could and they were off like a high performance ride. "Maybe but have you had any luck calling them?" Steven shook his head. "No i haven't, i tried calling home but no one picked up and none of is have an answering machine so i can't leave a message." Diamond shrugged maybe Steven would have luck this time. "We'll try again. Hope it works if not we'll keep doing what we've been doing."
Garnet was sitting in the middle of the room in silence while Pearl paced. The warp pad activated and the latest of the search group came in shivering. "Any luck?" Amethyst shook her head. "We looked in the far north and its buried under snow for several feet, there was a town higher up on a large mountain side but we couldn't make it there through snow higher that Sugilite." Garnet got up and reached for the phone jist before it rang. "Sorry can't talk right now." Garnet moved to hang up before Steven's voice came through. "Garnet wait!" She stopped and held the phone to the her ear seeing if anyone else had heard, evidently that hadn't been the case. "Is that you Steven?" Garnet took the phone outside not wanting to get swarmed.
It had been two weeks since she heard his voice in anything but her memories, it was slightly selfish but right now this is what she wanted. "Yeah its me listen i'm okay, i made a friend out in the north who's helped me get this far but he wants to know if there're any warp pads near the holongo desert. We're at a gas station about three miles outside of it." Garnet rubbed her chin. "Theres a ward pad ten miles from your current location east of where you are, but the entrance to the cave its hidden in is hidden, head towards it and i'll meet you there." Steven nodded though she couldn't see it. "Thanks see you soon."
Steven hung up the phone and his stomach growled. Diamond who'd stayed silent throughout the conversation had walked over to the counter feeling Steven's magic sight on him. He was to far away for Steven to hear but he was talking to the manager before his arm glowed and a spike came out of his palm. Diamond snapped it off before handing it to the manager who examined it and accepted it before handing Diamond a bag and walking away. Diamond walked over to Steven hand handed him a sandwich and then taking out his own. "Here." Steven took it unwrapping it and eating it. "How'd you do that? I thought Gems bodies were illusions?"
Diamond shrugged taking a bite of the sandwich, eating was odd but nice to him, it felt weird but he couldn't say he disliked it. "I'm not a regular gem Steven, while Gem's bodies are energy constructs i'm artificial but in s different way than your friend Amethyst, my body is made up of crystalline structures rather than energy." Steven looked confused. "'Sigh' I'm made of Diamond instead of energy Steven, it also means i don't always have to retreat into my gem in order to regenerate." Steven nodded stars in his covered eyes. "Thats so cool!" Diamond kept walking as they moved towards a trail. "Hey Steven, you said you didn't know if you could fuse with another Gem right?" Steven gulped down his food before nodding.
"Yeah Pearl said it might be because i was organic rather than energy like them but i can fuse with other humans." Diamond nodded thinking. 'Maybe thats not the problem.' Diamond turned to look at Steven even though he didn't need to. "Maybe thats not the reason you can't fuse." Steven raised an eyebrow. "What?" Diamond smiled lightly. "You said their bodies are an illusion right? Because they're energy construct, the reason you can't fuse isn't as simple as its because you're organic Steven." Diamond got down on on knee and poked Steven in the forehead. "It's because the Gems are energy, and you're matter, you can only fuse with a solid object. Remember the fusions have gems where they're parts have gems meaning the one part of them that is matter cant fuse but you and Connie merged despite being matter."
Diamond stood up and kept walking pausing when Steven didn't. "What's wrong?" Steven was looking at his sandwich a sullen look on his face. "You mean i'll never be able to fuse with the Gems?" Diamond face palmed how could he be so stupid. "Sorry but that seems to be the case, its all guess work though so i don't know for sure i can only go off of what you told me." Diamond turned and walked up to Steven back down on one knee and put his hand on his shoulder. "But listen you're made of matter, i'm made of matter so even if you cant fuse with the gems..." Steven looked up surprised and elated. "I could fuse with you?!" Diamond nodded. "Come on Steven Garnets waiting."
Garnet warped in and made her way out the cave it was inside. She saw a rolling pink ball headed towards her. "That must be Steven."
