"Max!"
"Hey Mom." He pressed a kiss against her forehead. He pushed his bag, his clarinet case, and his sleeping bag into the car. He grabbed immediately for his phone.
"How was camp?"
"It was okay," he shrugged. "I missed Sammy, well like, all of you, not just her." He paused, and then continued. "And not that I'm not excited to see you, but wasn't Dad supposed to pick me up today?"
Kensi laughed. "Yeah, he was. Fun story about while you were gone..."
"Dad didn't get shot, did he?" Max sat up, alarmed.
"No, I promise. He's fine. It's your sister. Turns out she's got the chickenpox."
Max rolled his eyes. "Wait, didn't we get vaccinated for that?"
Kensi shook her head and leaned back. "Stop sounding like your father. It's a very light case, she just feels kinda crummy. The doctor says you should be fine to go home, but we talked to Nell and Eric and they're cool if you wanna crash over there tonight. I think Sammy missed you too."
Kensi watches as her son's eyes widen in excitement, but he frowns again. "I don't know. Don't you think I should go home and see her? And Dad too? I mean, I've been gone for like a week and a half."
She smiled, definitely feeling like a proud momma. "You're admitting to missing your sister?"
"Of course I missed her," he said, sounding shocked that there was any question about that statement. "Especially since she's sick."
Pulling her phone out of her pocket, she showed him a picture. "I took this of them before I left to come get you. You can go over to the Beale's. It will be fine, Max."
Max looked at the picture of Callie and his father, snuggled up in her bed. She had a blanket draped over her little frame and Deeks had her tucked deeply into his side. They were both out cold.
He wasn't going to miss out on a night at the Beale's. The sweet picture made him happy; he could make it just one more day without going home.
