The years came and went and I traveled between the town and the tribe. I made sure the British didn't know where I went off to each day. John Smith had left and the year was now 1614. This strange stuff Called Tobacco was planted and the letters to big brother and from my family were now scarce. I heard more and more about problems arising from Britain. On one of the days I stayed in town and a new ship came into the dock. A man by the name of John Rolfe came and he stayed in the town for a while but would go into the woods once in a while. A few days later, as I left for my lessons with the tribe, I saw him. I stayed hidden as I snuck towards the tribe to warn them. Pocahontas reassured me it was fine, she had met him and he seemed nice. I saw him hang around the tribe more and more after that and it worried me. I was afraid another war would break out. That was until John Rolfe ask Pocahontas to marry him. I knew that term, and I knew what it meant. He wanted to try and merge the two groups of people together. The following year Pocahontas was planning on leaving to England.

"Please, stay here, you are the best teacher I have ever had…"

"Alfred, I have taught you all I can, you must now learn from the older members of the tribe."

"But…"

She just shoke her head. "I want to see where you come from" She told me and I nodded softly remembering when I was so curious to come here.

"Promise me you will come back"

She smiled and grasped my shoulders "I Promise Alfred, we hope to be back by the time this season repeats itself."

I nodded and hugged her "I will see you in a year then"

She smiled and hugged me back "Of course Alfred."

I waved her and John off as the ship sailed away and I did as she told me to do and I learned much more as I went to the older members and even the Chief to learn more. I could now understand him, and he could understand me, so we had many conversations and when I came to a word I didn't know, I would point to the object or draw it and he would define it for me. A year came and went and every day I waited for the ship carrying Pocahontas to return, but it never did. Finally John came back and I went to him almost immediately after he stepped on land. His eyes seemed sad. We walked to the tribe together and he broke the news to us. Pocahontas had grown sick right before they got on the ship to come home. She died in England and was given a proper burial. He handed me a note from her and I had tears falling from my eyes. He then gave the Chief her necklace she always wore and he took it and gave me a piece of it before giving a piece to each person she helped. Finally there was one bead left and he went to her tent and buried it inside. Since we couldn't let her body become one with the earth, the bead held her heart and soul, so he buried that. I had the shell that hung from the necklace and I held it close and a tear fell onto it.

"you promised to come home in a year….I miss you, there is so much I could have told you and we could have had a whole conversation, and it would not be in English….I will always remember you" I whispered in the tongue I had learned to speak in and looked at the sky sadly.
