"Let's not miss our train this time Ed. I don't want to go through that again." I sigh as we head out of the door of our hotel. Why do we have to go so early in the morning! The sun hasn't even risen yet!
"Don't worry; somebody's going to pick us up in the lobby with Alphonse." Ed reassures me to my right. Ed seems to be acting…weird lately. He was nicer to me, not ignoring me or acting like I was a dangerous criminal anymore. Was it because I saved his butt yesterday? Or did Al tell him something earlier? Either way, I'm happy that we're at least getting somewhere near friends. Or maybe a little more-
Wait, what am I saying?! Ed get's together with Winry at the end, not anyone else. And Ed probably won't even like some wimp like me. But I still can't change the story in anyway. Even the slightest thing I say or do could alternate something and screw it up. I can't screw anything else up again!
We arrive at the lobby and in the center of the room, looming tall and almost menacing, stood Armstrong with Alphonse sitting next to him in a crate. People passing by look at him funny and scurry off on their own way. I can't really blame them. Armstrong does look kinda scary until you get to know him to be the biggest drama queen in Amestris. Yeah, this isn't sticking out like a sore thumb at all.
"Major?" Ed almost exclaims once we see him.
"Hello Edward, shall we go?" He booms, almost scaring me half to death. He has to be at least a couple of feet taller than us; and his voice is so deep. Who wouldn't be scared?
"Fine…" Ed mumbles as he stalks towards the door.
"Wait, I don't think we've been properly acquainted yet, Miss." I flinch at Armstrong as Ed turns around with an 'are you kidding me' expression. I do not want to get in a bone crushing hug or anything related to that.
"I'm Bree." I put on an anxious smile, wanting to leave it at that. But he just has to make this flashy and awkward. He grabs my hand and almost bows.
"A pleasure to meet you."
"Ok, ok! Your good!" I swipe my hand back. I was scared that he would see my wrist, but I had my gloves on. Still, you can't be too carful right? And even if I didn't have some stone in me, I still hate it when guys do something like this. He raises an eyebrow at me, but doesn't say anything about me.
"Alright then, shall we?" he gestures towards the door. I speed walk towards the door, my face flushed from embarrassment.
We settle in on the train as Armstrong went somewhere with Al. He's probably looking for the sheep car so Alphonse didn't get lonely or anything. Poor Al, way does he get treated so? I shrug the thought aside as I get my earbuds out and start listing to music. Ed, looking like he suddenly has a thought, taps me on my knee.
"Hey," he starts, sitting across from me, "You probably should watch your things." He points to my iPod.
"Why?" I sincerely ask.
"Because my mechanic will probably love to take them apart." Oh right, I forgot about that trait of Winry's.
"Alright, thanks for the warning." He shrugs while smirking at me, making my heart skip a beat. Is this the first time he's smiled at me ever since I got here? Wow, something is wrong with him. Should I ask him about it? What would he say? I sigh deeply and go for it.
"Hey Ed?" he looks up and hums for me to go on, "Why are you being so…nice to me?" he looks away abruptly and I know there's something going on behind this.
"Well…um…" He stutters with a scowl on his face. Come on Ed! Spit it out! But Armstrong just has to come back and plop down on the bench next to Ed. It creaks so loudly when he sat on it I think he's going to break it!
"So what are you two talking about?" he questions, looking to and fro from our faces. I sigh and look out the window to the people walking about the train station.
"Nothing." I grumble. I want to ask Ed about this alone. Not when people are in range to hear. Especially not when Armstrong is around. Yeah, he's hilarious but he also scares me. There was a tap on the window, and we all look to see Hughes.
"Hey." His voice muffles as he raises a hand in greeting. Ed pulls down the window and sticks his head out slightly.
"Hughes?" Ed asks surprised.
"The folks at the Eastern Command Center were a little too busy to make it down here today. So I came to see you off instead." He says a matter a factly as he turns to me, "Hey Bree." He greets me with a warm smile.
"Hi Hughes!" We actually got acquainted at Mustangs office and even though we haven't talked a lot, I still like him. And I think he likes me too. It's like when you see a person and you're friends right then and there.
"Great, but can you tell us why the Major's here?" Ed sweet drops as he looks back to Armstrong. One of his famous pink sparkles appears.
"For protection. You're in no shape for a fight Ed."
"And I can't really save your butt every time you get into trouble." I chime in.
"I never asked for your help!" Ed mumbles.
"Children can be so stubborn." Armstrong says, not even bothering to look at anyone of us.
"Hey shut up I'm no child!" Ed roars at him, ticked off, "Anyway, did you make sure Al got aboard?"
"Of course," Armstrong looks to us. "I thought he might get lonely so I put him with the sheep."
"My brother isn't some kind of farm animal!" Ed yells at him as I face palm. Why are people so mean to Al! He doesn't deserve this! The only person here that deservers it might be Ed. A train whistle goes off a couple of times, signaling that the train was about to depart.
"Oh, it's time," Hughes says as he salutes to us, "Ok, you guys have a safe trip. And give me a shout out once you get back to Central!" The train starts slowly moving as the guys salute to each other. I didn't really know what to do, so I just wave to him as he waves back once he drops the military protocols. All was mostly silent once we were going fast and get out of the city. But Armstrong seems to be a conversation starter.
"Have I ever told you about the art of conversation that has been passed down the Armstrong family for generations?" He asks us as we both groan.
Yeah, this was going to be a long day…
I literally run off the train once we arrive at our destination. I. Hate. Trains! Why couldn't they have cushions or something on the seats! I stretch my arms above my head, getting some pops from my back in response. Looking around, I already like what I see.
It reminds me of Colorado, where I grew up, just a little bit. There were green, big rolling hills where ever you looked with the blue sky touching them. The air smelled of farms and animals, with a blend of grasses. And everywhere you look, it was quiet and peaceful. Nothing like a big city like Central. I've always wanted to live in a place like this. Small community yet a big area to live. And no pollution! The air was actually fresh and clean! I sigh in bliss as Ed, Al and Armstrong climb out of the car.
"I thought you were making a run for it." Ed comments, but I ignore it.
"Can't we just stay here? It's so…calm." I ask, knowing the answer.
"We'll probably stay for about a week…" Ed says as he starts down a dirt road, "Come on, it's this way." He mentions for us to follow and we do.
It takes us almost an hour, but we finally reach the Rockbells. Their house kinda gives you a homey kind of feeling. A light yellow, almost a tan color covers the outside with green window frames, shutters, and railings. Den was outside, barking at us as we approach; his automail leg glistening in the sun. He wags his tail in happiness, squirming with excitement with people arriving. How did that happen anyways? I'll have to ask them sometime. Pinako, hearing Den bark, comes out to greet us.
"Yo, Granny!" Ed calls out.
"We're home!" Al also exclaims.
"Oh dear, what have you done now?" She says, almost sighing. Ok, she is like the smallest person on the planet! She was maybe three fourths of Eds size but her hair stick thing just makes her a little bit taller. And, I had to squint just to make sure she had eyes behind her glasses. It was kinda weird…
"A lot has happened, can you fix us up?" We reach her and Armstrong sets Al down with a thud. I smile kindly at the old woman, being only a foot or less than me.
"This is Alex Louis Armstrong." Ed introduces. They shake hands.
"I'm Pinako Rockbell." Pinako says as she turns to me.
"Hi, I'm Bree." I introduce myself as we shake hands.
"A pleasure." She says as she takes a step back. "I know I haven't seen you in a while Ed, but I seems you've gone and grown shorter." An angry mark pops out of his head and I try to stifle my laughter.
"Granny, you're suppose to say how big you've grown." He growls with his angry mark pulsing. I bend down and start to pet Den, chuckling as their conversations goes on.
"But why would I say something so untrue?" she counters with a straight face.
"I'M STILL TALLER THAN YOU YOU MINI HAG!" He finally roars as a wrench comes flying out of nowhere and hits him in between the eyes. And that did it for me. I start rolling on the ground laughing as Winry calls down to him.
"Edward! I thought I told you to call first before you come over for maintenance!" she says, leaning on the rail of the top floor.
"Winry! Are you trying to kill me!"
"Ha-ha-ha! Welcome back!"
"Yeah…" Ed growls on the ground.
"Yo! Nice shot!" I call up to her giving a thumbs up.
"At least someone finally appreciates my skills around here."She smirks in return. Maybe we could get along after all…
Nothing really happened for the rest of the day. Winry clobbered Ed with her wrench for breaking her automail. And we all went our separate ways. Al and Armstrong went outside, getting firewood and Al just wanting to be out of the house. Winry and Pinako start working on his arm and leg, which we all find out that he was actually growing taller! It's a miracle! And Ed goes off with Den to visit his mother's grave. So what am I suppose to do for the rest of the day!? Maybe I could get a hold of Kate?
Sitting in the back lawn, I text Kate. I unlock my iPad, getting onto Facetime. Her face appears on screen, green eyes blazing in rage at me and her brown hair in a mess. I flinch at her expression.
"Why the hell didn't you answer my text messages!?" she hisses at me, her bedroom dark except for a dim lamp beside her.
"Hey! I've been busy…" I scowl at the grass beside me.
"So how did it go?" Kate asks after a few moments. I flinch at this, clenching my teeth. "Bree?"
"I…I did, yet I didn't."
"And that means…?"
"I did save Nina from her dad but…she…" I close my eyes, the images swirling in my head. "She died in a car crash after." She takes a quick inhale at the news with sadden eyes.
"Bree, I'm sorry."
"I guess I can't change people's fates to die, even if I try as hard as I can." I snicker bitterly, still not facing her.
"Bree, if that's how it supposes to go then it's not your fault. You couldn't do anything to change it." She tries to reassure me. But I shake my head at this.
"Still, I can't shake the feeling that I could've done something." I sigh.
"On a different subject, what happened with that one dude? Scar or whatever…" She says, trying to put on a smile for me. "What did you do?"
"Uh…well… I almost blew Scar up..." I mumble.
"Do Ed and Al know…about you know what?"
"No, I didn't actually do it. But whenever I use the stone I get this feeling of energy building up inside of me or something."
"Details!"
"Ok, ok! Everything went on as in the episode except I was there. They accidently abandoned me and I was trying to find them again. Once I found them, something was off. The police wasn't there when they were supposed to be. So I kinda tackled Scar to the ground…"
"Like you do in soccer?" I lay down on my stomach on the grass, holding the device in front of me.
"Yeah, but it would've been a foul if I did that in soccer. Anyway, Scar was going to blow my brains out when Mustang finally gets his sorry butt to the scene and nothing else really happened after that." I shrug.
"But you helped at least! That's something!"
"Yeah, I guess…"
"So where are you now?"
"Resembool, Ed's getting his automail fixed. And I have nothing to do!" I whine as I roll on the ground, setting Kate on the grass beside me. She sweet drops, but she's already use to my over dramaticness.
"Maybe you could learn about automail?" She suggests. I laugh at this statement.
"Me? Learning about automail? That's hilarious Kate."
"Hey! I'm just trying to help you!" She yells at me.
"So enough about me, what's happening over there?" I ask as I lay on my side to face her, using my arm as a sort of pillow.
"Well, you're parents are suing the school thinking it was their fault for the whole shebang. And they've called the FBI about it," I groan at this.
"Why did they have to get them involved?! And how!?" I groan. My parents were so freaking nuts!
"Don't ask me! I wouldn't know!" She exclaims, but looks to her door frantically as if expecting someone to barge in.
"Your parents home?" I ask, reading her expression.
"Yeah, and it's like midnight…"
"Really? It's only four in the afternoon here." Wow, so the times are different between worlds? That's actually kinda cool…
"Well, *yawn* I'm going back to bed. Talk to you tomorrow or something?" She yawns as her eyes droop with fatigue.
"Yeah, see ya!" I wave off as she just closes out as she mumbles a bye. I close my iPad and roll over onto my back. Arching my back so I could look at the house behind me, my mind wanders.
What happened in that house when Ed was over here? What did he have to go through in there? How many bloody people have been in there? What kind of emotional turmoil goes on in there? How many people have suffered from the realization of being handicapped? How much blood has seeped into those floors? Suddenly, I was scared of the place that I thought once felt homey.
Then something weird happens.
Without warning, the walls start to seep out blood and the sky grows black. Wait-what! I flip myself over onto my hands and knees. This can't be happening! It's not real; this is just some trick of the mind. Just me being paranoid again. But the more I study it, the more I believe it was really happening. By now, the whole house was covered in crimson, and it's starting to leak onto the lawn like it was over flowing with the sticky stuff. After staring wide eyed at it, I get the courage to stand up and walk over to it. I lift my shaking hand to the wall, and I was about to touch it.
"Hey girl!" I let out a squeak and jump back. Pinako was leaning on the railing, looking at me from the side of the house,
"Come help me with dinner!" She commands. I look back towards the wall and see there was nothing on it. No traces of blood on the walls or grass. Was it all just some day dream from my paranoia? It looked so real, and I swear that I could feel the heat of warm blood radiating off of the house. I furrow my eyebrows in confusion.
"What's wrong girl?" She calls after seeing my expression, earning a look from me. Looking one last time at the walls, I run over to the front door and start helping her with dinner. Was it all in my head? I'm I going insane or something? Even throughout making dinner, my hands couldn't stop shaking. I don't know if Pinako noticed or not, but she never said anything.
After we finished dinner, Pinako asks if I could take some up to Winry's workplace. As always when I don't want people reading my emotions, I put on a fake smile and gladly accept. I climb the stairs slowly with the tray of soup and bread in my hands, which are still trembling. Stop it hands! I reach the top of the stairs and knock on the door while balancing the tray in between my hand and torso. A faint 'come in' reaches my ears and I open the door to find Winry at her desk working with automail parts.
"Pinako told me to bring some dinner up to you." I say, looking for a place to set the tray down. She looks back and jumps from her chair.
"Hey thanks! It smells great! Did you make it with Granny?" She strides over to me and takes it from my hands.
"I tried…" I mumbled as she laughs at my answer.
"Do you want to chat? I really need to take a break anyways." I smile and nod my head at her suggestion. I settle down on a crate as Winry sits back in her chair, scarfing down her food. We talked for a few hours as Winry starts working on Ed's automail again, not really minding that I was here. I think that she enjoyed talking to me, finally having another girl in the house, how could she not? Not having a girl her age to talk to, guess she was going to use me as much as possible.
We were in the middle of talking about the automail business when my phone had to ring. Monster by Imagine Dragons fills the small room as Winry looks at me with curiosity.
"What is that?" She asks me, looking around the room for the source.
"Hm? I don't hear anything." I laugh lightly as my phone vibrates in my pocket. Crap, this is bad! If Winry finds out about my devices, then she's going to screw them up! She abruptly looks at me and points.
"You pocket is lighting up!" She yells as I look down and sure enough, my phone was on the lock screen and was showing through my jean pocket. I sigh and take it out, seeing why it was going off.
"Are you kidding me?!" It was just a stupid reminder for me to study for vocabulary for honors literacy! Argh! Stupid Miss. Lillipop and her vocabulary test!
"Oh! What's that!?" Winry clasp her hands together while looking at my phone in awe.
"Something that you're not allowed to touch!" I growl to her, bringing my phone to my chest and holding it protectively.
"Why not!?"
"Cause you're going to take it apart and screw it up!"
"Wait, how did you know I wanted to take it apart?"
"Ed gave me a heads up on you…"
"I'm going to kill that shrimp…" She grumbles as she slumps in her chair.
"Evidently, there's going to be a line." I shrug as she looks at me in shock, "I'm first to get revenge so…" We start laughing together as we hear Ed getting crushed by Armstrong as he bawls over Ed's story.
I guess we could get along after all.
