She sat in her kitchen; heels knocking against the legs of her chair, droplets of cool water pooling in the creases of her fingers that gripped the cup. Sandy was at home alone, silence echoing through out the house, her only company the half-glass of lemonade in her left hand. It was a fairly hot day, beads of sweat slid down her neck, slipping past her collar and reminding her of how glad she was to be inside.
Her parents and twin Brother had left to pick up some shopping a few minutes earlier, so she was yet to decide what she would do for the next hour or so. Her eyes wondered to the window on her right, drawn by the dancing colors of autumn leaves in the wind. Sandy watched, their movements seemingly hypnotic and found herself slowly slipping into her mind.
She jumped suddenly, the sound of knocking at the front door having shattered the peace and quiet. She sat for a minute, before standing and walking to the door, the padding of her feet springing off the walls and back into her ears.
Through the frosted-glass of the window, she could see the silhouette of a guest. Hesitating, she had remembered how empty the house was; she reached for the door handle and turned it slowly. A fist stopped just shy of hitting her face; she assumed he had been going to knock again. She blinked, staring at the hand in front of her, before its owner quickly retracted it and tucked it behind his back. In the other, he held a bag that was surely filled with more cakes, biscuits and goodies.
It was the boy from seven houses down the road. He was tall, taller then her, with dark brown fur and green eyes. She had known him for almost her entire life, since his mother and her own had gone to school together and are best friends. Every second Saturday, without fail, he would appear on their doorstep with more baked goods for them. She had seen him mature through the years and he was now recognized as one of the best looking men at her university. He was very popular with the girls and often had them fawning over him; heavens knows she despised the girls and the way they only loved men for their looks. Although, she couldn't disagree with them, as she found herself at times, quivering in the knees when he appeared on her doorstep those Saturday afternoons.
His name, Blake Oakwood.
"Hey." He looked down before glancing at her. His left foot rubbing the back of his right, he offered the bag to her.
"My mom asked me to come bring more food for you guys. So, yeah…"
"Thanks."
Sandy took the bag from his hand; the air awkward and quiet between them. They stood facing each other, neither moving and the uncomfortable break in conversation getting worse with each passing moment.
Giving into the silence, Sandy finally made a move to go inside. Turning on the ball of her foot, she shifted her weight to her right and rested her hand on the handle. Blake was still standing quietly behind her, shifting his weight from foot to foot.
"D-…Did you want to…come in?" Sandy looked over her shoulder as she opened the door and gestured to the entry.
"Uh, sure."
He wandered in through the opening, removed his shoes and carefully put them down near several other pairs. Blake continued down the hall, looking curiously at the family photos littering the cream colored walls. It had been years since he last came in.
"Every things so different! When did you repaint the walls?" He brushed his fingers over the tinny bumps in the paint.
"About a year and a half ago. Mom was getting sick of that green color it used to be."
She laughed lightly at the memories of her mom complaining over the ugly color that came with the house when they had bought it. Sandy gingerly walked past the other squirrel and into her kitchen, picking up her glass and downing the last few gulps of lemonade. Sweat was still trickling lightly down her back, a reminder of the heat and their broken air conditioner.
"Did you want a drink?" She shook her empty glass, the melting ice cube clinking against each other. A symphony of summer.
"Yeah, that'd be great." He fanned himself slowly with his hand; wiping sweat from his brow with the hem of his shirt.
A toned chest, muscles easily visible from all the heavy lifting he does in their bakery, appeared from under the material of the garment. Sandy gulped, averting her eyes from his exposed skin and instead, busying herself with making said offered drink. There they were again, the quivering of her legs, oh how she hated it.
She turned and opened the fridge, searching for the tell of yellow that represented the lemony drink. Spotting it on the top shelf behind some jars of jam and left overs from last nights dinner, she carefully pushed them aside and retrieved the jug of liquid. A quiet thud of the fridge door, the clinking of glass and five ice cubes later, Sandy handed the cold drink to Blake. Their fingers brushing slightly as she passed it to him.
Once again they were plunged into the same awkward silence that had plagued them on her porch. Having had barely any time to actually socialize with the 20 year old man in front of her, they had no clue how to start a conversion or what to actually talk about once engaged in aforementioned conversation. They is mostly likely why their verbal interaction never went anywhere, and ended up burning out like a lit match after a few words had been tossed back and forth.
Scuffing her feet lightly on the ground, Sandy decided it was time to break the silence once again.
"Would you…like a tour of the house?" Sandy inquired tentatively.
"I guess that's a good idea," he lifted a hand to rub the back of his neck, embarrassed; " it's been years since I last had a look around." He smiled lightly at her and motioned for her to begin.
