"And lastly, my bedroom!" Sandy walked through the doorway and gestured widely to the small room cluttered with science posters and notes. Her arms fell to her sides as she turned to look over her shoulder at Blake. He had his back to her, having closed the door. An audible 'click' sounded in the quiet room, leaving the two of them locked in, alone. Blake, refusing to meet Sandy's gaze, kept his gaze on the solid wood of the door.
"I-I'm not going to try anything.."
Sandy breathed out slowly, the fear she had been trying to conceal having fled her thoughts after a moment.
Thoroughly confused at his actions, she cocked her head slightly to the right, eyebrows coming down, a small wrinkle appearing in the middle of her forehead. His back still faced her, his tail twitched lightly; hands scrunching and un-scrunching the material of his shorts in an effort to wipe off the excess sweat on the palms of his hands. He seemed to take a deep breath and still himself, before turning around to face her.
She felt the words questioning his actions die in her throat at the sight of his expression. Her lips hung open slightly, stunned at the boy in front of her. Once again, she felt fear invade her mind, but this time, it was fear of another kind. A fear of change. Her body refused to move, likened to stone, she stood still, eyes watching as the older male in front of her stepped forward. His piercing green eyes seemingly staring into her very heart; the blush on his cheeks causing her heart to skip a beat and those damn quivering knees to make a reappearance.
She swallowed, words still failing her as he finally came to stand a few steps in front of her. She was all he saw, at that moment he tried his hardest to convey the feelings he felt for her.
Sandy was overwhelmed; she hadn't prepared for this at all. There were no logical excuses for his expression apart from the one she refused to confront. She would NOT become another one of those dribbling, stuttering girls who fawned over him. She was stronger then that; she had her work to focus on, she wouldn't be distracted. She'd turned down plenty of other boys because of this; it should be the same right?
The mammal still couldn't rip her gaze from those gorgeous green orbs in front of her; so she didn't miss the slight movement in his jaw as he prepared to speak what was on his mind.
"Sandy… I love you."
"…" Sandy stood staring at the male opposite her, completely disbelieving.
"I've loved you for so long. I've loved for as long as I can remember. Ever since high school, you've been all I see. You're such an amazing girl, you're funny, smart and so beautiful I could stand here staring at you all day."
Sandy, still disbelieving, stood there listening to the words pour out of this boys mouth. The only signs she was still paying attention to him was her constant eye contact and slight movement of her fingers against her skirt. For someone who was confessing their love to her, he was awfully confident in his voice. This thought nagged in the back of her mind, but was slowly muffled by the other thoughts of disbelief and gratitude, and what seemed to be the littlest bit of hope.
"Sandy Cheeks, would you go out with me?"
The question hung in the air with the humidity, both of them bothering and warming her. She swallowed once again, she was parched. Deciding to ignore his question, she used her recently reacquired ability of speech to voice her question.
"Why did you lock the door…"
Blake was stumped by this question, having expected a very different answer to his previous question. The squirrel examined Sandy's face, before deciding to quell her curiosity and avoidance.
"You wouldn't believe how many times I'd tried to talk to about this before," he once again raised his hand to the back of his neck and rubbed it, embarrassed, " I thought I wouldn't take any chances this time."
Sandy could vaguely remember one or two times when the boy had tried to talk to her in private, but someone had always come looking for her or her help. She nodded rigidly at his answer before pushing her hesitation and that damn nagging thought of 'this is too good to be true' and steeling herself to answer his pending question.
"…Yes."
It took a second for the word to register in the taller mammals mind, but when it did, a large grin of joy and relief popped onto his face. Mission completed. Blake took this as his cue to thank her, promising to come back soon to let her know when they would go on their first date, and politely excused himself to leave as he should "get back to the bakery before they think I was squirrel-napped".
After hearing the echoed sound of her front door closing, Sandy collapsed onto her bed, thoroughly exhausted after such an unpremeditated experience.
It was their 6 month anniversary. Sandy never imagined they would get on so well together, especially after their first 'date turned out not as planned (let's just say you should never eat a milkshake after having the seafood platter). They had a lot in common, despite taking two completely different courses at their shared University. They spent every Friday night together as their 'date night' and things certainly had been going well in the intimacy department, with the two of them spending long afternoons kissing lightly and cuddling, or spending long evenings attached to each other at the mouth. Don't worry, all clothes had remained on, as Sandy stressed the point of taking it slowly.
She was yet to tell him she loved him, as she had tried to stick with 'I really like you' or 'I'm so lucky to have you'. But, she felt somewhere deep down, that today was the day. They were going to go out to dinner later in the evening, somewhere fancy according to Blake; but at the moment, Blake had just come back from an outing with his pals. Sandy thought they were nice, but, could be a little overbearing from time to time. She could her their laughter in the lounge room, Blake's immediately registering in her ears as a small smile appeared on her lips.
It had been fairly warm for an Autumn day, reminding her of when Blake had first confessed so many months ago. She thought it was fitting to serve her guests and boyfriend some cool lemonade. She loaded several glasses onto a platter, still smiling, she walked to the doorway of the lounge room where she had heard their laughter resonating from before. What she herd now, were hushed whispers, along with a snicker every now and then and some quiet congratulations.
"6 months, can you believe it! All this time and she still none-the-wiser! How dumb could she be?!"
Sandy's smiled faltered, starting to crumble and disappear as she stilled her breath to listen more closely.
"See! I told I could get any girl I wanted. Even the 'un-touchable' Sandy Cheeks. I've got my hook in deep boys! She might even fall in love with me at this rate." A few of Blake's friends clapped him lightly on the back in encouragement and congratulations, Blake's smug smile and arrogant manner reaching Sandy like a slap to the face and a punch to the gut.
The nagging thought she had so foolishly hushed all the weeks ago, now screaming in her mind.
Numb. She felt numb.
The tray dropped from her hands, clattering onto the floor so loudly that the huddled boys jumped apart in fright, several landing on their backsides before a look of terror morphed their ugly features and caused them to rush out of the house in a flurry of limbs and excuses. She was seeing red; rage ripped through her veins, betrayal rippling through her body in waves that caused her body to tremble just slightly.
As Blake turned around, he could feel the emotions rolling off of Sandy in surges that immediately let him know the jig was up. He opened his mouth, apologies and denials flooding from his mouth, hands coming up to shield himself from her killer gaze. Before she knew what was happening, a growl ripped out of her throat.
"GET OUT!"
Sandy pointed angrily at the door, her breathing heavy and uneven; tears now pricking at the sides of her eyes. Blake scrambled up from his position on the floor and ran out of the house like a smacked dog. Sandy stood there, tears falling from her eyes, mind empty apart from thoughts of his lies. In a fit of rage and hurt, she ran to her bedroom, barely making out the blobbed shape of her doorway through her tears. Picking up the light flowing blue dress she had planned to wear that evening; she twisted it in her fists, briskly making her way to the back door.
Finding the lighter fluid and matches under their barbeque, Sandy poured a generous amount over the expensive reminder of her pain, and threw a lit match onto the pile of cloth. Watching the flames lick and curl the edges of the once beautiful garment, Sandy finally collapsed to the ground. Crying and screaming, she sat their watching the fire late into the evening until the stars came out and the darkness comforted her.
