A/N: I've been putting this chapter off for the longest...mainly because I had no idea how to approach this final chapter. Yes, the final chapter of Moondust has arrived. Thank you to everyone who took the time to review, favorite, and follow. The support on this story always motivates me to write Moondust as best as my imagination will allow me. I'll stop with the blabbering and let you all get to reading!
Lookin at you, like a star
From a place, the world forgot
And there's nothing, that I can do
Except bury my love for you
The brightness of the sun, will give me just enough
To bury my love, in the Moondust
I long to hear your voice, but still I make the choice
To bury my love, in the moondust.
-Jaymes Young, "Moondust"
Shawn Hunter has never felt this much pain before in his fifteen years of life. He didn't understand why he felt like this, well a part of him knew but he had to admit to himself and he knew that he would let the secret out of the bag to Pru if she didn't break him like this. Shawn had found love in Prudence Jeanine Jewel. Maybe he always loved Pru since he met her on the playground on the first day of kindergarten.
Four year old Shawn Hunter didn't like this place. His father had wished him luck leaving for work an hour before his mother got him ready for his big day. Shawn did not fully understand why his parents were doing this to him or why he had to leave his safe place in the trailer park. He felt butterflies fluttering around in his tummy as he held onto his mother's hand on their way to the car. The car ride was filled with Virna Hunter chatting to her son who she kept an eye on in her rear view mirror. She knew her little rock was anything but happy to head to his first day of kindergarten. His arms were crossed over his chest as tight as his small arms would allow him to squeeze and a deep frown was pressed into the skin that separated his thick eyebrows.
Shawn kept his eyes outside of the window as his mother stated how much fun he would have on his first day. The ride from the trailer park to the school was the shortest ride Shawn could remember, the building outside of his window was large resembling a haunted house...which was cool but Shawn could already feel the evil lurking inside. He didn't want to go. It took some coaching and some tantrums for Virna to get Shawn out of the vehicle. Virna squeezed Shawn's hand feeling the slight shake from the contact, Virna realized Shawn was indeed nervous. Virna glanced down both sides of the street before leading her son across towards the building. Virna chatted about what she would make Shawn for dinner tonight if he behaved at school. Shawn had a few incidents at preschool where he wouldn't share the toys with other kids, that's when Virna knew she had a headstrong child.
The hallways were too clean and the building was freezing. Even with Shawn's jean jacket a freeze crept along his bones. The school made Shawn feel smaller than what he was as the hallways were slightly quiet and long. Virna pointed out some art-work to Shawn who moved his eyes to the wall but kept his face forward. He didn't know what would come running at them from the hallway so he very cautious. Virna did not let go of Shawn's hand which the boy secretly loved until they stopped with the turns in front of a room. Virna peeked her head in eyeing two women leaning over a few children who sat a table. The taller lady with jet black hair, striking blue eyes, and porcelain skin made her way over to the entry way of the classroom.
"Good morning!" The lady piped.
Shawn immediately noticed that her tummy seemed a little too round for him. The lady grinned as she slowly crouched down in front of Shawn, "Hey buddy! What's your name?"
Shawn squeezed his mother's hand keeping his chin up, "Shawn..."
"Shawn! I think that's a brave name; Are you brave, Shawn?"
Shawn glanced up at his mother who gave him an encouraging smile, he slowly let go of her hand remembering that his father told him to show the class what Hunter's were made of.
"Yes I am." He said eyeing his teacher.
The blue eyed lady grinned at the boy in front of her, knowing that she would have some stories to share with her husband about this one. "I'm Mrs. Tilly and you're going to fit in just fine."
Mrs. Tilly stood up straight and held her hand out to Shawn who cautiously gripped it. Mrs. Tilly swung their hands gently as she led the way over to the tables where three of them were already full. The tables seemed to fit about five children on each side and there were still three more empty tables that needed to be filled. Mrs. Tilly brought Shawn over to the last table where two girls and two boys sat coloring. Mrs. Tilly pulled out a chair holding her hands out for Shawn to sit down on a navy blue chair. Mrs. Tilly then pointed to a tag that lay on the table right in front of Shawn, "Now what does this say?"
Shawn ran his fingers over the plastic that covered the index card inside. He knew that belonged to him, "My name."
Mrs. Tilly picked up the card from the yarn strings looped through the holes then draped it over Shawn's tiny neck. She then turned to the two girls and remaining two boys who eyed the new kid that was placed at their table. "Guys this is Shawn Hunter, your new table mate. Why doesn't everyone introduce themselves to Shawn here while I go get him his own crayons, and finish talking to his mom?"
Mrs. Tilly gave every child at the table an encouraging smile as she sort of waddled away from the kids. The blonde haired girl reminded Shawn of Goldilocks. Her blonde hair sort of looked gold underneath the lights in the classroom, she wore an overall dress with a stripped t-shirt underneath, with red sparkly shoes, and had a large red bow at the center of her head. She let out a sigh flipping her hair over her shoulder eyeing the boy up and down in front of her, Shawn didn't know what that meant but he knew he didn't like it.
The girl next to her grinned showing that she had one tooth missing. She wore burgundy corduroys with a white long sleeve t-shirt, she had dark brown hair tied back into a low ponytail and brown eyes. She the first from the table to drop her green crayon, "Hi Shawn. I'm Stephanie."
"Hi." Shawn replied.
The boy with extremely brown curly hair, brown eyes, and a large nose was the next to greet Shawn cheerfully, "I'm Cory."
Shawn nodded his head staring at the boy a bit weirdly as he held his hand out for a handshake, "Shawn..." He answered, shaking his hand.
"Peter." A quiet voice said.
Shawn eyed the boy who sat next to Cory, his face looked a bit pink and he had puffy eyes making Shawn believe that the boy had been crying. He had his chin pressed in his arms which were folded on the table. He hadn't touched his crayons and had a small cup of water by his side.
Stephanie pinched Goldilocks' arm causing the girl to slap her hands away from her skin, "Eloise," She muttered eyeing Shawn shortly before turning back to finish coloring in a palace she drew on her paper.
Shawn didn't bother to say anything to her. Shawn had heard his parents talk about people like her, the people who lived on the "better" side of the tracks and let money control their lives. Shawn knew he didn't have fancy things and that didn't bother him. He loved everything his parents gave him because it from the two people that loved him. He didn't care for the finer things in life since at the end of the day the four year old knew he was taken care of.
He turned his attention back to the entrance way to see his mother already had her eyes on him. The older teacher with short sandy brown hair, long peach fingernails, who smelled like sugar handed Shawn a box of crayons pulling two sheets of paper from the yellow plastic box that sat in the middle on the table, "Hello Shawn. I'm Ms. Kolman."
Shawn thanked the woman turning his attention back to his mother who finished talking with Mrs. Tilly. She then whispered, "Be brave," Which Shawn read easily before kissing her fingertips at him then made her exit.
Shawn took a deep breath watching his mother walk away from him. The butterflies began to flutter again but he knew he had to be brave. He turned around to face the four that sat around him to see Stephanie and Cory smiling at him. "That your mom?" Cory asked.
"Yeah." Shawn answered, having his guard up.
Stephanie rested her chin in the palm of her hand, "She's pretty."
Shawn felt the butterflies calm at that. Cory then proceeded to show off his drawing of a magician who pulled candy out of his hat, Stephanie than showed Shawn a drawing of her own mommy as an angel, Eloise bragged about her drawing of a palace that her grandmother lived in who was the queen of Switzerland, and Peter was left to ask Shawn what he would draw.
Overall the first half of kindergarten was not as bad as four year old Shawn thought it would be. The entire class spent the first hour drawing until they were all asked to stand for the pledge of allegiance, Mrs. Tilly and Ms. Kolman then proceeded to play a name game once the class became full with more children, after that they learned to write and sound out letters A-L, Mrs. Tilly then read the children a few poems from a poem book then had Ms. Kolman hand out their own journals where the next day they would have to write their own poems which Shawn found his really liked, Ms. Kolman made the children line up to have a water break at their fountain near the front of the classroom, next Mrs. Tilly and Ms. Kolman handed out counting cubes testing the children to see how they could count, another water-break, and then they had recess.
That's where Shawn found Pru. Shawn was more than happy to see the outside of the school, the playground was huge! They had a swing set, a merry-go-round, a see-saw, a tire as a swing which Eloise and Stephanie occupied, and a playground set where there were a lot of other children playing. Cory and Shawn stood by each other eyeing the screaming children.
"Race ya to the playground!" Cory ran off before Shawn could comprehend what was just said.
Shawn laughed running after Cory. The two ran around on the jungle gym for awhile until Shawn got tired, Cory could go on for what seemed like hours which he let the boy do as Shawn sat down on the edge of the gym while Cory screamed like a cave man sliding towards the monkey bars where a girl stood underneath with long dirty blonde hair. Shawn turned his his attention to the woods which surrounded the gym to see a girl with a mixture of blonde and brown hair sat with a book in her hands. From what Shawn could see, the girl didn't seem to interact with any of the kids and Shawn heard the blonde that was with Cory shout, "Pru come play!"
Pru lifted her head letting Shawn get a glimpse of teal and yellow that made up her eyes, "No!" She screamed back turning back to the book.
Shawn let out a laugh at the shocked look on the blonde girl's face. So the secluded girl who sat on the wood chips with a book sat in her lap name was Pru. Shawn jumped down from the jungle gym and made his way over to Pru who kept her eyes on her book. She didn't lift her eyes as Shawn moved closer to her but she did however held out a stick to Shawn who jumped back.
"Whoa!" Shawn gasped, raising his small hands.
Pru placed a dog-tag on her copy of Charlotte's web placing the book beside her. She wiggled the stick in front of Shawn, his dark sea green eyes following the stick, "What do you want?"
"I'm Shawn."
Pru blinked, "Okay..."
"I'm four years old."
Pru tilted her head to the side eyeing the boy in front of her. He had a faded acid wash jean jacket on, with a black t-shirt underneath, sneakers, a gold chain wrapped around his throat, and jeans. His hair was a perfect brown that was swept to the side leaving random strands to fall into his large bright deep sea eyes. No one ever approached Pru since her demeanor at just five years old seemed to be intense. She couldn't help that was the way she was raised. She could be carefree but that was only shown around her cousin Topanga or her mother. Pru immediately knew that Shawn was no threat to her, she knew he was watching her since he got tired running around with his cookie shaped headed friend, she just didn't like being approached.
Pru slowly placed the stick down, stretching her legs out eyeing the boy in front of her. Shawn remained standing a few spaces away from the girl taking the time to really see her. She had natural tan skin, more blonde in her hair than brown, freckles against her nose, chubby cheeks, and a sharp stare.
"Sit." Pru ordered patting the dirt beside her.
Shawn moved to sit next to the girl balling his knees up to watch the scene in front of him. The kids here seemed to let loose running around with no care in the world, this is what freedom looked like and if school was always this fun Shawn wouldn't mind sticking around.
Five year old Pru messed around with the ends of her skort feeling panic on what to say. She really didn't have to say anything to the boy next to her but he was the definition of cool. He looked so at ease sitting next to her and comfortable. Pru had scrapes on her knees from playing too rough with the boys and Shawn noticed. He didn't know too many girls that liked getting messy but here Pru sat in the dirt, getting her clothes dirty.
Pru watched as her cousin helped the cookie headed boy from the ground. He just took a big fall from the monkey bars from not having a strong enough grip to lead him on to the next bar. Pru and Shawn both shared a laugh as Topanga helped a slightly hurt Cory to the teachers that stood by the narrow stairs that led back to the building.
"Who are your teachers?" Shawn asked.
"Mrs. Carpenter and Mr. Duncan."
Pru heard her cousin Topanga screaming her name causing her to become alert. She jumped to stand to her feet to see Topanga waving her over from the jungle gym, it looked as if all the classes were lining up to head back inside. After this was lunch time and Pru didn't know if she would see Shawn again. Pru sighed picking up her book and nodded her head for Shawn to follow. The two jogged over to the pavement stopping to stare at one another, "Pru. Five years old."
She offered Shawn a crooked smile before Topanga tugged on her hand pulling her away from the boy. Shawn watched as they ran to the back of the line, he only broke his attention away from the girl when Ms. Kolman called him to get in line. Shawn was also at the end of the line behind Cory who showed Shawn his scarred hands. As the lines started to head down the steps he noticed Pru's class was the second to last class to do so, Pru's stunning eye's had caught his again and this time Shawn gave her a smile. And as they left the playground Shawn realized Pru was the reason for his smile that day.
How could a girl at just five years old steal Shawn's heart? Even when Pru announced at ten years old that her family was moving to New York, Shawn knew that he would still care about her. When second grade approached Shawn realized that girls was a strong interest of his. His first girlfriend ever was actually Eloise who kissed him in first grade. He didn't know why that ever happened but it did. Yes other girls caught his eye but his four year old heart always knew that he had a thing for Pru. It took for third grade to come around for Shawn to admit that he liked Pru. It actually hit Shawn that he had a crush on Pru when one of the school's bullies Grant and his little followers surrounded Shawn. Pru had been claiming the top of the dome since she had made it to the top the fastest and easily spotted Shawn getting shoved around.
Pru watched as Shawn shoved Grant back who was a fifth grader and two times his weight. Topanga had called out to Pru as she jumped down from the dome, cracking her fist as she walked over to the scene. Topanga knew what Pru was getting into as soon as the girl jumped down from the dome. Topanga hated seeing Pru get violent, it wasn't pretty. The girl tended to black out whenever she got into fights.
Pru didn't question what was going on as she spotted Grant's two friends holding Shawn to the pavement. When she did get close enough she picked up a rock on her way to Grant and threw the rock at the side of Grant's head watching as it hit his ear. Grant held onto his ear and turned just in time to meet Pru's fist. Pru was known for getting into fights with boys, most of them backed off but these fifth graders did not. As Grant got himself together, one of Grant's friends gripped Pru's hair and threw her to the pavement her face getting scraped up. Shawn managed to get one of Grant's friend's off of him after elbowing him in the mouth then kicking the one who threw Pru in his back. Grant had lifted Shawn up from the back squeezing his organs making it hard to breathe. Pru shakily got to her feet with war in her eyes, she started throwing punches at the two boys who later ended up on the ground. Her attention turned to a wheezing Shawn, she crouched down and started punching at Grant's legs hearing a crunch. It was when Grant let go of Shawn, Pru ran to his aid just to find the teachers running at them.
Not even two weeks into third grade Shawn Hunter and Pru Jewel found themselves seated outside of the principal's office. Shawn was given water to ease his breathing, the skin that covered his lungs were slightly irritated but the nurse informed the seven year old that he would be just fine. As for eight year of Pru she was given ice for bruised knuckles, ointment for the scaring on her face and a few bandages to cover them up. Their wounds were nothing compared to Grant and his followers. Thanks to Peter, Shawn's old kindergarten classmate witnessed the whole scene and told the principal that Grant and his friends started the fight and that he was the one who ran off to get the teachers after the scene seemed to get worse at each hit. Grant and his friends were forced to apologize to Shawn and Pru for their bulling and had been suspended for a week. As for Shawn and Pru's punishment, they both had lunch detention for a week. Their parents were also notified of what happened and were both sent home for the rest of the day. While the two waited for their parents in the main office, Shawn told Pru exactly what he was thinking.
That was something Shawn would never forget. With a bruised body Shawn winced as he turned to Pru who still had a look to kill on her face, "Pru?"
Pru turned her head to Shawn, "Yeah?"
"Thanks for fighting with me. No other girl would have done that." Shawn said.
Pru huffed, "Too many girls here are scared to."
"But you're not. I think-I think I like-like you."
Pru's eyes turned dark and a scowl appeared on her eight year old face, "Like-Like me? Ew. You can't do that."
"Why not?" Shawn was confused and sure that he knew what he felt.
"'Cause I don't want a boyfriend." Pru answered simply eyeing her father walking into the office.
Pru jumped down from the seat to stand. Shawn felt as if he could cry not hearing his crush return the same feelings as he shared for her. Why didn't she like him? We're they no longer friends since he said he liked her? Would she tell her dad on him? Her dad was scary and he didn't know what her dad could do to him. Pru shared the same look in her eye that her father always had in his eyes. Shawn gulped holding his head down as Pru began to head over to her father, she then turned around to run back to Shawn at full speed. Shawn gasped as Pru squeezed the back of his neck. He melted into her embrace as he interlocked his hands around her waist in a squeeze. Pru pulled back quickly to meet Shawn's eyes, "Just because I don't want you as my boyfriend doesn't mean we still can't be friends okay?"
"Okay." Shawn whispered as Pru gave him a quick smile, then turned cold as she spun around to face her father who watched the whole scene.
The man roughly tugged on Pru's wrist after leering at the boy his daughter just snuggled. Mr. Jewel did not know who this boy was since Pru never told him about her days at school, but he would do some investigating to find out if this boy was worthy to be in mini me's life.
Shawn would never forget the day Pru first rejected him. Or the six more times after. It felt a lot like now. Heartbreak, like his heart had been ripped right down the middle, pulled from his chest, tossed on the ground, stomped on, then set on fire. Shawn fought so long for this, to get the girl that he's loved since he was four years old. To get the girl that had his heart. All of the other girls he pursued two week relationships with (if that) were nothing compared to the times he spent with Pru. For the short amount of time they agreed to work on their relationship, Pru just tossed it away like it was nothing. She was wrapped in some other guy's arm looking as if they were about to kiss or if they pulled away from a long session of making out. He knew what it looked like and he knew that's what happened.
The fifteen year old didn't realize he had tear stained cheeks until his father found him. Chet let out a long sigh as he struggled to sit down next to his son, "I'm guessing you found her. Want to tell me what happened?"
Shawn only ever allowed Pru to break his heart. The first time she did was when she rejected him and the second time hurt the most. Chet didn't like to hear his son like this, trying his best to stop sobbing. He wanted him to be tough but he wouldn't be harsh on her since he knew that Shawn never loved someone as much as Pru Jewel. Chet felt a blaze of anger when he found Pru looking around campus for his son. Chet already knew what happened but he wanted his son to tell him. He needed to hear his side. Chet clapped Shawn on the back in comfort, "Let it out. Tell me what happened, son."
Red rimmed eyes met Chet's, "W-Why would she do this to me dad? I came a-a-a-ll the way out here to tell her that I loved her, that I loved her for such a long t-t-time and she's hugged up on another guy?!"
Chet's gruff tone spoke, "I knew a lot of girls like her when I was your age Shawnie-boy. She's a heartbreaker! Been breaking your heart since you were four, you finally got some sense and stopped chasing her to branch out and try some new things. That night she came over to watch the game and cook us dinner...I saw that she cared about you but I don't think she loves you like you love her. It's the painful truth."
Shawn shoved his fist into his eye sockets trying his best to shove the tears away. Could there be truth to his father's words? When she wrote 'I care. I'll always care.' On the back of his neck that night he ran away, he believed her. Was he a fool to? He made some mistakes too, dating someone else for two weeks when he finally got himself together. Was this Pru's way at getting back at Shawn.
"She's not like that." Shawn muttered with a sore throat.
Chet glared at his son as he hissed, "Look at you! She had you out here crying over her! I knew this was a bad idea, I should have just kept us on the road. Matter of fact let's go now, while we still can."
Shawn watched his father as he stood up. Shawn noticed something sticking out of his father's back pocket, he moved forward as his father was getting up and pulled the piece of a paper from the pocket. Shawn frowned at the crumpled up piece of paper and quickly unfolded it causing Chet to spin around. Shawn's eyes scanned over the sheets of paper to see notes drawn and Pru's handwriting at the top: for Shawn.
Pru wrote a song for Shawn? Why would she do that? Shawn felt confusing running around in his aching head as his sore eyes met his father's embarrassed expression, "Dad why do you have this?"
Chet rubbed the back of his neck not wanting to meet his son's eyes. Shawn scrambled to his feet with the sheets of paper in his hands, "Dad? Why do you have this?!" He repeated firmly.
Chet didn't like lying to his son but he did sometimes, the less his son knew the better. Chet met the fire in Shawn's eyes knowing that he could see right through any lie that he would try to spill out to him, "I ran into her on my way looking for you, alright! She was looking for you for over two hours...hell we all were! You must get that from your ma."
Chet started pacing on his feet as Shawn glanced down feeling more sorrow for his mother. "She gave me those sheets of paper and told me to give them to you when I find you."
"So all those things you just said to me...you were saying them so I could just forget about her?! So we can just leave and continue looking for wherever mom is?! What are you getting out this by lying to me about Pru?!" Shawn roared.
"I'm trying to protect you! I don't want Pru hurting you like your mom did to me, to us."
Shawn chewed on his lips, "Well dad this isn't about you and mom right now. It's about the girl I loved-love. You were just going to keep this from me, huh?!"
"It's just some dumb notes on a sheet of paper." Chet mumbled.
Shawn raised his eyebrows as he let out a humorless laugh, "Dumb? Her passion for music is anything but dumb dad! She wrote me a song...a song that could possibly tell me what she feels about me. Pru doesn't show her feelings because every single person she loves get's taken away from her! You're so selfish. All you care about is yourself, you left me alone and you know the first person that was there for me? It wasn't Cory, he was the second but at least he was there. Pru Jewel was the first person to make sure I was okay. The fact that you lied about this and tried to get into my head to make me hate her is cruel. Yes I'm still angry, hurt, betrayed by what she's done but I could never hate her like I now hate you."
"Shawn!" Chet yelled as Shawn brushed by him with the sheets of paper in his hands.
He had to find Pru. He had to hear her side.
Guilt.
That's all Pru felt along with her anxiety. Early the next morning Pru and Julian had to perform their new song in front of the class. Pru felt like crap the next morning and felt like sleeping through the whole day, darkness was a friend of hers. She hadn't talked to Julian about what happened and didn't want to. All she wanted was to see Shawn, to explain herself that it was not what he thought it was. She didn't want to kiss Julian and she knew she wouldn't. Although Julian had his eyes on Pru's lips and started leaning forward she wouldn't let his lips touch hers. She had too much history with Shawn to just throw it away like that. Pru never lied about her feelings for someone and when it came down to Shawn Hunter she wouldn't dare. She cared about him more than anyone could imagine.
She fought so hard to remain as friends but she let love in. Now she would probably have to pay the cost without love and without a friend. Pru struggled to get herself ready for the class in the bathroom as her fist shook, she couldn't believe she allowed herself to get so stupid. She didn't know Julian and she had no reason to want to kiss him. Yes he was attractive. Yes he was nice but how could she like someone without having a connection to him? Pru had history with Shawn and she wouldn't throw that away for just some flang. Pru didn't like hurting Shawn like this especially unintentionally. She hoped he would find her so they could work this out, if that were possible.
Pru hadn't realized she punched a hole through the mirror after letting her anxiety get the best of her. The pain helped her anxiety dissolve as she clenched onto her now bleeding hand, "Nice going Pru you need that hand to play the piano today," She scolded herself.
Pru managed to get herself together leaving the bathroom to find McKenna waiting for her. Pru was a bit angry with the chatty girl late that night since she led Shawn to see her hugged up with Julian, when she woke up the next morning she knew that it wasn't anyone's fault by her own. Pru smiled at McKenna which the smaller girl returned looping their arms together knowing she didn't mean any of things she screamed at her last night. McKenna bit her tongue to stop herself from asking Pru what happened to her hand and kept it moving to the auditorium where class would be held today. As McKenna talked all Pru could hear was silence. When the two made it to the auditorium Rocco and Julian were making their way inside of the room. Pru noticed Shawn off to the side already watching her, she stopped in her tracks causing McKenna to do the same.
McKenna let go of Pru's arm, "I'll be inside."
Pru brushed some hair behind her ear slowly making her way over to Shawn. Shawn pushed off the wall meeting Pru half way, "Tell me everything that happened."
"I...while writing the song I spent hours working on. I asked Julian to help me figure out a specific part in the song where every song has to pick up tempo. We were assigned partners by the way and Julian came up with the right melody 2:28 into the song and I got so excited when we figured it out since I always let anxiety get the best of me. When we finished that part I ran up to him and hugged him...which is saying a lot since I...you know don't like to be touched. We just hugged, Shawn that was it." Pru confessed.
Shawn crossed his arms, "It didn't look that way. What am I supposed to think Pru, when I see my girl hugged up on someone else looking at another guy as if they were about to kiss?"
"It didn't happen!" Pru hissed, feeling her eyes burn.
His girl? Pru didn't know how to feel about that.
"It could have if I didn't walk in with McKenna! Did you want to? I know he sure wanted to. You've been telling people that I'm you're 'kinda boyfriend' whatever the hell that means while I'm giving all my attention to you! While I'm worrying if you're gonna leave me for good at this fancy school, you didn't think about me!"
Pru folded her lips into her mouth closing her eyes, "No. I didn't want to kiss Julian because I wouldn't do that to you. I don't want to hurt you anymore, 'Cause I know I have."
Shawn nodded his head, "You're right! You have and I thought I could get over you. Every other girl that I dated after you moved to New York...they never understood me the way that you do. It just hurts to give someone your heart and they won't give you their's in return. As soon as we start to get things moving...stuff like this happens."
"You know why I can't open up so quickly! Don't throw that back in my face, Shawn! What do you want to hear? That I'm sorry 'cause I am. I never meant to hurt you, I never meant to leave you to follow my passion for music! I never meant to almost kiss someone else! I care, you know I care." Pru shouted, her voice filled with tears.
"And I love you." Shawn whispered, causing Pru to lift her head quickly.
Pru covered her mouth as tears started to flood down her face. Shawn loved her? Pru's mother always had hope that her daughter would find love one day, she always knew she would find in Shawn Hunter. When Pru told her mother about Shawn telling her that he loved at seven and eight years old her mother knew the power of love would always follow those two. No matter how hard it will take for them to fall, it would happen and if she were alive on this earth today she would be cheering them on.
Pru knew she cared about Shawn but love? She didn't know if that were possible. They were young and the two wouldn't have gone through this roller-coaster with each other if Pru love him back. Shawn swallowed the lump in his throat as Pru stood frozen with tears in her eyes. She didn't know what to say, and the panic of Pru not loving him back set him off. Yes he was young and yes he liked other girls before but love...he was sure about this. Shawn gripped Pru's cheeks pulling her face close to his to kiss her forehead, "I love you. That means I'l care about you forever. I love you because I know you're my first love. I will defend you like you always defend me. I love you because you're so stubborn. I love you because you put your family first. I love you because you bring me out of my comfort zone. I love you for your passion of music and I love you because you're my heart. I love you because I know you care so, so much about me that you'll figure out somehow if you can love me back. I love you enough to let you go, to let you pursue what could lead you to a better future. So for now, I'll bury my love for you, my moon. Now it's all up to you, I can't be any clearer than this. I want you to stay here and do what you love to do, if you ever do find love for me in your heart then you know where to find me Pru."
Pru was speechless as Shawn quoted this all to her. His words were clearer than the light that the moon showed to others in the dark. Pru was the moon but she didn't know her light just yet. She just didn't know. When Shawn placed one last kiss on her forehead, she watched him walk away possibly forever. Pru snapped out of her state to find Julian saying they were up next as she sat next to him in the auditorium. On shaky feet Pru made her way to the piano while Julian stood beside the piano with his violin.
"This piece is called Primavera." Julian announced since Pru wouldn't.
Pru eyed the audience then turned her attention back to the keys in front of her, closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and played for Shawn.
A/N: And that is the ending of Moondust! Yes there will be a sequel in the winter, I stated in the last chapter that possibly in the fall time I will write the sequel but I want to stretch it to the winter time since I don't know what my work load will be like this semester. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to support this story and my character Pru Jewel. The song that Pru and Julian are performing belongs to Ludovico Einaudi titled, "Primavera" so check that out if you want.
Hopefully I'll see you soon? Leave me a review :)
