Chapter 4
Eragon lead the 13 elves to Oron's campsite after they had burned the dead including the dead dragons. They had found the horses several miles away nearly everyone had jumped off their horse in order to fight the dragons. Horses did not like dragons at all even though the elves tried to breed horses that would not mind dragons. That was easier said than done.
Five days later, the elves had made it to Captain Oron's campsite; it had taken them a week to reach the camp. This campsite was bigger than Tin's as Oron was much closer to the main campsite and there were more dragons about. Eragon hoped that Bid'daum would not be spotted by the elves.
Bid'daum had followed them since Tin's camp. The 13 rode were directed straight to where Oron was. The captain looked at the small group in confusing when they arrived.
"Where is Captain Tinorfiwiel?" The other captain asked.
"Sir, we were attached by dragons. He did not make it," Eragon responded.
"All right. Are you his second in command?"
"I am not, sir."
"God damn it. Why are you here then?"
"He asked us to ride on. His last command was to report to you."
Eragon lied about Tin's last command. In reality, Tin's last command had been for Eragon to stop the war and Eragon planned on following that command even if it killed him.
"Fine. We leave tonight for the General's camp. Make sure you are ready," Oron demanded.
Eragon turned to the others and lead his horse away. Tin had always made sure that his soldiers were well rested before moving out again. Oron seemed to not care. They had different styles of running their elves.
Night fall quicker than the 13 elves would have liked for all of them were tired and wished to rest some more. The joined with Oron's elves at the east side of the campsite. Eragon hoped they could keep up with the others for they had rested horses and were ready to move out. Oron sat at the front on his warhorse and the 13 sat at the back. This party was 50 elves excluding Eragon and the others from Tin's camp. The total was 63 elves; a very large party of elves.
It would take ten days to reach the General's campsite and another 17 days to journey back to Tin's campsite. The journey to the General's passed rapidly, Eragon was glad that they wasted little time, however Quicksilver and the other horses were tired of traveling. The party of elves were meted by one of the captains at the General's camp. The General was in charge of the whole elven army. Next there were the captains in charge of camps and received their orders from the General. Underneath the captains were the scouts, massagers, and soldiers.
The Captain led the elves to the middle of the campsite; where their tents were. Eragon tended to Quicksilver. The gray horse was ready to settle down and sleep and eat for the next several days. Eragon could not blame the horse.
"Eragon, the General wants to see us at high noon," Captain Oron said. Apparently, Eragon had taken on Tin's role and was the acting Captain. Eragon did not like being in charge of the few elves from Tin's camp, but no one else would take on the leadership role.
"Thank you, Captain Oron," Eragon said.
Are you all right, Eragon? Bid'daum asked. He had been asking Eragon that for the last several days.
I am fine, Bid'daum. Just tired and wish to rest a little.
Eragon could feel that Bid'daum was worried for him. Tin's death had hit Eragon hard. He never imaged that the elf could die. Tin was one of the best elves Eragon had ever known and he had been a friend of Eragon's parents as well.
A couple of hours later Eragon sat among the other captains of the army. The army had a total of 18 captains; these captains stood around a table with a map on it, looking towards their General. General Lord Thinor, Son of Lord Fuinor, had personally chosen each of the captains, so his eye rested upon Eragon.
"And who might you be?" Lord Thinor demanded of Eragon.
"Sir, I am Eragon, son of Agaron," Eragon asked.
"Yes, but why are you here?"
"Sir, Captain Tinorfiwiel has been killed," answered Oron, "Eragon here is standing in for the next captain."
"Thank you, Captain Oron. Let us continued. Give me you reports one by one."
"Sir, the dragons are attacking heavily near the Spine," said Captain Ethir, "We would like more back up if possible."
"The dragons are closed to the Isenstar Lake and the northern part of the Ramr River," Captain Galon stated, "We are being attacked heavily as well."
"Most is quiet near Tiidosten Lake," Oron reported, "We should be able to move north to help Captain Galon and Ethir."
"No, Eragon, what about Tin's area?"
"Sir, I have seen very little of dragons. Only abandon nests, but nothing else."
"You will move the camp north to Leona Lake. Captain Dawon will move north as well. His camp will move along the Spine to help Captain Ethir and Galon."
"Sir, Eragon is not a captain, he does not have that authority," complained one of the other captains.
"Eragon, I, General Lord Thinor, son of Fuinor, gave you Captain Lord Tinorfiwiel, son of Esgalwathon, command. You are now Captain Eragon, son of Agaron. You will be reporting to me."
"Thank you, sir."
Great, now I am a captain.
You should be please. You have more power to carry out Tin's order, responded Bid'daum.
I hope you are very far away.
I am.
Good.
Eragon walked slowly back to his area of the large campsite. He never meant to become the captain. He did not want this. He wanted to be a scout again and fly with Bid'daum. He won't be back in Tin's camp, wait, his camp until the war talks were over. These talks could take a couple of weeks.
I think Tin would want you to take over his command, Bid'daum said.
But what about his second in command? Would it he wanted to take it over?
I don't know. I have never met the elf.
"Oh, look it's the scout that become a captain," a blond elf said nearby.
Eragon stopped and turned towards the elf. The elf had dark eyes and golden hair framing a face with an evil smile. Eragon recognized the elf right away. A bully. He had been dealing with elves like this one his whole entire life. Eragon mainly ignored them.
"Why would General Thinor make you one of his captains? You are not of noble birth," the elf spat out. Most of the captains were picked from nobles, however, there were some captains that were not nobles including Eragon.
"No. Who are you?" Eragon asked, "I am afraid I did not catch your name."
"Ha Ha, I am Legiol, son of Gailon."
Uh, so this was the famous Legiol. The one that would fill the ocean's with dragons' blood if he could. Eragon instantly disliked the elf. He had nothing, but bloodlust in his eyes. Eragon bet if they were not at war already, Legiol would surely make sure that war had started or at least one war.
"And Legiol, who do you report to?" Eragon asked.
"That is none of your business!"
"Yes, it is. As you have said yourself, I am a captain and therefore above you. Now your captain's name if you please."
"I serve under Captain Meril," Legiol said through his teeth.
"Ok, good-bye, Legiol. Let us hope that our paths never cross again."
Eragon turned and walked away from Legiol. He would have a talk with Meril about her killer elf. Maybe she could keep him on a tighter lease. Eragon would surely kill the elf the next time he sees him.
He is a rotten elf.
Yes, Bid'daum. I am going to kill him. He will get in the way of making peace.
That is not like you, Eragon.
I am tired of this war. I feel like Legiol will stand in our way.
All right. Just be careful with whom you make enemies with.
Thank you for the advice. I will try to.
"Greets, everyone," said Thinor at the start of the next meeting, "I have decided to make some more changes to our moves. Captain Eragon will be in charge of Captain Meril's troops."
Oh, yay, more exciting news to make Eragon's life a living hell. But that means he had some power to transfer Legiol out of his command. That was good. Or maybe he would send the blood thirst elf back home, that was probably a better idea.
"Sir, I would like to take Legiol, son of Gailon, with me. We work well together and he is my second in command," Meril stated.
"Yes, you may take him with you. Eragon, do you have anyone in mind for a second in command?"
"No, sir, I don't."
"I think Beldroth, son of Aduilon, should be a good match for him," captain Oron said.
Eragon blink in surprised for Beldroth, son of Aduilon was Eragon's cousin. Aduilon was Eragon's uncle on his mother's side. The sister and brother had a disagreement and never spoke since. Eragon had never met his cousin Beldroth.
"But is it Beldroth, one of your troops," Meril asked.
"Yes, but he has proven himself. Its time he is promoted."
"Eragon, what do you say? Give Beldroth a chance, he is a good soldier," Oron said.
Did Oron know of Eragon's relation to Beldroth? Oron seemed to be pushing him in the same direction Tin had. To successes in ending the Dragon War. Did Oron know about Bid'daum?
"Um, yes, I will give Beldroth a try," Eragon said.
"Now that we got that all figure out. You may return to your sites. I look forward our next meeting. Hopefully, it will be off of the battle field," General Thinor stated.
The captains filled out of the General's tent. Good, they can be on their way. But he would be around different troops than before. Could he gain these troops' trust to lead them? And what about his cousin? The pair of them would be surrounded by different elves.
"Come, Eragon. Let us go met your second in command," Oron said.
The two captains walked back to their campsite. Eragon lost in thought as Oron went on about Beldroth.
"Beldroth, come here!" Oron said, after their short walk to the campsite. A young elf about the same age of Eragon stood up. He had raven black hair, high cheek bones, and a light forehead. He did not look like what Eragon had a picture in his head.
"This here is Eragon, son of Agaron. He is the new captain and you are to be his second-in-command."
"What?"
"You are his new seco-."
"I know I heard you, captain. He is also my cousin."
"What? Eragon, why did you not tell me?"
"I did not think it would matter."
"Ha Ha, this should be interesting," Captain Oron said and walked away.
"Don't mind Oron, he is always like that," Beldroth stated.
"He is an odd guy. When I first met him I thought he disliked me."
"No, he and Tin used to be good friends. He was just grieving Tin."
"Oh."
"So, Captain Eragon, when are we moving out?"
"Tomorrow morning met me on the west side of camp."
Eragon had several things to do before moving out. One to make sure Quicksilver was ready to go and to go documents stating that Eragon was the next Captain of Meril's troops. He did not think that those troops would like that very much. But he would do whatever it takes to end this.
