Finally I got this chapter up. I started it months ago, but have not added anything. I have been trying to find a job now that I am out of school. I thought I find one, but turns out I did not. So maybe I will soon, because I get bored fast.
Disclaimer: Everything is owned by Christopher Paolini. Expect a lot characters including Gala, Gala's parents, Tin, Oron, Beldroth, and Legiol. Please ask me before using this characters. Thank you!
By the way I change point of view a couple of times in this chapter. Usually from Eragon's POV to Bid'daum's POV, so it is not too dramatic. Enjoy!
Chapter Five
Eragon and his cousin, Beldroth, camped under a shelter of trees as lightning flash in darkening skies and fat raindrops fall from the heavens at a breath taking speed. The wind howled and pulled at the trees. Eragon loved a good storm, however he wanted to make it to his new posted before the week was up. That was not going to happen as Eragon and Beldroth had witness several flash floods before they had stop.
Bid'daum did not seem to mind the weather. Of course, when you are a dragon nothing stops you. Plus that Bid'daum could fly around whenever he felt like it. And at the moment Eragon was witnessing the storm thought Bid'daum's eyes and the storm was beautiful. Eragon could see different colors as the clouds darken and the lighting flashed in the sky. He could feel the wind upon his wings and the rain hammering onto his back.
Bid'daum landed and walked thought the forest. His senses on full alert as he never knows when another dragon or elf was near. The white dragon did not have to worry about Eragon's cousin. He fully believed if Beldroth saw him, Eragon would stop Beldroth from killing him.
Now other dragons and elves, Bid'daum was not sure about. He had never met another dragon and was slightly taken aback at that. The only other dragons Bid'daum had ever seen were the ones that Eragon had fought and killed several weeks ago. That was also thought Eragon's eyes, so Bid'daum did not count that as meeting another dragon. Meeting another dragon would mean talking to said dragon and not just seeing them.
He did see signs of the dragons everywhere he went. Old claw marks on trees and in the ground, roars in the far distance, and other such signs. Bid'daum would like to meet one. He wanted to know his own kind, but he did not want to kill any elves. He did not think the other dragons would understand. So for now, Bid'daum stayed as far away as he could. He just hoped that the other dragons, do not find him first.
For now, Bid'daum followed Eragon. He did not fully trust the elves. The only elf he trusted was Eragon. He wanted to make sure Eragon was safe and to do that. Bid'daum had to follow.
At first, Eragon hated that Bid'daum had follow him, but now the stubborn elf was grateful. Bid'daum would not sit around while his only friend in the world went off to war.
The rain will continue until morning, the dragon could feel that in the air like mother earth was telling him herself. He wonder if all dragons were this close to nature or it was just himself. Maybe all dragons had unique gifts that the elves did not knew about. Then again elves did not knew much about dragons to begin with. Now he sounded like Eragon. Eragon often told him that if elves knew more about dragons then there would not be a war.
Bid'daum neither agreed nor disagreed with Eragon. He did not knew the reasons the dragons kept to themselves. And he did not fully understand why the elves assumed that dragons were just mindless stupid beast. He did not understand a lot of things, but he was ok with that. He felt in his heart of hearts, he would learn everything with time. He just had to be patience with the world.
Bid'daum found himself in a vast dim cave to hide from the raged storm. He settle down into the cave, which he liked. He would love to travel to the Beor Mountains where the dwarfs lived. Those mountains would have lots of caves to explode. And the dwarfs would be interesting to meet.
The next morning, Eragon and Beldroth departed from their camp. Bid'daum did not move until they were farther along. The dragon could travel faster than those deer like creatures the elves rode upon.
He only covered several miles before Bid'daum sense something was wrong. He smelled the air around him. Whatever it was, was not an elf. Bid'daum could smell an elf several miles away. It was something he had never smelled before. Should he follow his nose? Or his friend? Whatever it was could put Eragon and Beldroth in danger. Bid'daum would whether die before seeing Eragon hurt. So the dragon followed his nose.
The white creature did not have to follow the smell far. Soon he happen upon whatever made that smell.
A small cluster of dragons. Bid'daum stopped to look down upon them. Blues and greens mixed with reds and browns dragons. Beautiful mixes of different colored dragons and different shapes. Some were as big as houses, while others were tiny as horses. Bid'daum study how they moved for everyone was playing together even the large dragons.
Then Bid'daum felt a hot breath on him. If dragons had hair, Bid'daum would be standing straight up telling him to run. And to run fast.
Instead he took a deep breath and pivot to meet the other dragon. The dragon was a deep red color like blood. He could feel the dragon trying to enter his mind, however Bid'daum would not allow that at all. No one had permission to enter his mind, but Eragon.
Bid'daum pressure back. The red dragon seemed shocked that he would.
Easy now, the red spoke, I just need to know what is happening across the land.
I have no idea, Bid'daum stated back, I have never even seen another of my kind before.
What do you mean, the red question.
I am an orphan with no home. Bid'daum thought it best not to mention his home was with an elf named Eragon. However, being an orphan was not far off from the truth. He did not know his parents.
Do you have a name? Bid'daum asked. He understood that everyone loved to talk no matter how shy that creature was. And with talking come information that a many would find either useful or not.
Yes, I am Soreth The Protector, son of Cordenth the Taker.
Bid'daum was confused the Protector of what and the taker of what? He was almost too scared to ask Soreth what he meant.
What do you mean by The Protector and The Taker?
I am the Protector of our ancient ways and my father took many of the dirty pointed ears lives. Now young one, what is your name?
I am Bid'daum. I don't know my father or mother, so I guess I am the son of none.
You have a strange name. How did you come by it?
I don't knew. I just liked the sound of it.
Soreth was asking too many questions that Bid'daum did not want to answer yet. Maybe he should return and follow Eragon. However Bid'daum felt that would not be wise for the red dragon could follow him and attack Eragon and Beldroth.
Do you have a thunder?
What is a thunder?
Bid'daum become confused. What was the other dragon talking about? A thunder? Does that mean that dragons can control the weather? He really wanted to return and talk with Eragon, but dared not to.
A thunder is a group of dragons. Many young dragons usually travel with their families until they find a mate. Or a group of dragons that are close friends. Why do you speak this way so much? It tries me.
I am sorry. I have never meet another dragon before.
How did you came to be? Dragons don't hatch if it is not safe.
I don't know.
It's alright. You may join with us until you find your place in life. I will never abandon another.
Thank you, Soreth.
You are welcome, young one.
The white and red dragon stayed peacefully on the cliff watching the dragons below them. Bid'daum did not dare leave even thought he could feel Eragon traveling farther and farther away from him. Bid'daum knew he could find the elf again if he need to.
Eragon, the dragon called out with his mind.
Eragon left his hands away from the horse's body. The horse came to a stop with the movement on his bit. Eragon could feel Bid'daum in his mind, but far away. He did not like this. He wanted the white dragon to continue to follow him.
What is it, Bid'daum?
I have met some other dragons. I can't leave without them following me. I will stay with them awhile and find a way to leave without any of them following me.
All right. Do you want to stay with them?
I will not lie to you my friend. I desire to stay with them and find out more about myself and my kind.
I am glad you do. Be careful Bid'daum and try not to stay to long.
You as well, Eragon.
Eragon look up from his position on the saddle. Quicksilver had stop moving forward and so did Beldroth and his horse. His cousin had his brows turned in and frowning at Eragon.
"Ah, what at you looking at?" Eragon asked.
"You. What are you doing?"
"I thought I heard something," Eragon responded.
"Oh, what was it?"
"I don't know. It's gone now."
"Good. So let's get going. You don't want to be late. What would the other elves think if their Captain is late?"
Eragon grin. He could tell he will like his cousin.
The next day, Bid'daum stood on the cliff again overlooking the group of dragons, also known as a thunder. He met most of the dragons the day before. He liked them. They had fun personalities and some were his age. However he did not like all of the questions they asked. He had begun to outright refuse to answer them. Soreth had to tell them off by that point in time. Now Soreth was taking this small group of dragons to a place where the dragon leaders met. A thunder Bid'daum had to remember to call them a thunder.
Bid'daum slightly wonder just how many dragons would be there. He felt that there would be a ton of dragons. Butterflies flap around in his stomach. Did dragons even get butterflies or was it called something else? Maybe called hawks or eagles since dragons were such large creatures.
Don't worry, Bid'daum. The leaders will not harm you. Besides I can explain most of you myself.
I am not just worried about that, Soreth.
Are you worry about the elves attacking?
What?
The elves. Pointed eared creatures that walk on two legs and can't fly.
I know about elves. I just don't understand what you are talking about.
Us, dragons are at war with the elves. We have to be careful in case they attack us.
Why? Why are we at war with them? Why not just fly away? Or make peace with them? I am sure they want peace as much as us.
Because young one, they have killed many of us. And we can't fly away what would other races think of us? They would believe that dragons are cowards and could easily be killed. As for peace I certain don't know. I have never spoke with an elf. Who knows that they want? You are very interest for one so young.
Ah, sorry?
Don't be sorry. More young dragons should be like you. I think it is time to fly to the leaders.
Bid'daum watch as the other dragons shoot into the sky. He was the last one to leave the earth behind him and climbed into the sapphire sky.
He followed the other dragons. They were like a moving rainbow with all of their different colors. Bid'daum did not fly within the small thunder, instead he stayed next to Soreth at the hind end of the thunder. They traveled many miles before landing near some mountains and the ocean.
We will rest here tonight and will continue tomorrow, Soreth spoke to all of the dragons in the thunder.
Why not just continue tonight? Asked a black female dragon.
Because some of us need to rest, answered Soreth.
The young dragons began to play with each other once more. Bid'daum did not join in. He was still weary of these dragons. He did not understand why the dragons were still attacking the elves. Eragon had told him how the war had started with one elf killing a dragon like a deer and how the dragons attacked the elf and killed him. Maybe he should listen to the dragons' reasons for the war. But that would have to wait for another time.
The white dragon curled himself into a ball like a cat curling up would. He was soon fast asleep.
When the dragons arrived to where the leaders would meet them, Bid'daum did not expected as many dragons. The younger dragons in their thunder flew off to meet with other dragons either family or friends. However, Bid'daum stayed near Soreth as he had no friends or family.
Soreth flew straight to the leaders. They rested on a mountainside in the Beor Mountains.
There are only 5 leaders. Usually they are separated, however they come together in times of war. Their names are Razeth son of Briam, Peddrenth son of Tharos, Igneel son of Inioth, Galzra daughter of Slytha, Minanth daughter of Teminth. Razeth is red, Peddrenth is white, Igneel is black, Galzra is green, and Minanth is gold, Soreth told Bid'daum.
Soreth and Bid'daum landed on the mountainside with many other dragons. Many of the small dragons took to the skies as soon as they landed expected five great dragons did not shift.
Bid'daum could not help but stare at these five. Magic power stick to them like a second skin and their body language told Bid'daum these five would not be messed with.
Greets, Soreth, said Minanth. She was the smallest of the five and her voice was calm.
Who the hell is this, Soreth, barked a deep, hateful voice of Razeth. Razeth compared to Soreth, was more mean looking and bulkier. Soreth was smaller and gentle looking for a male dragon.
Be nice, Razeth, responded ebony dragon had a long lean and slender body, but just as large as Razeth.
This is Bid'daum. He is an orphan.
What do you mean, Bid'daum? We have no orphans. That is lesser creatures, hissed Razeth.
I have no parents or thunder. I have grown without other dragons around me, thunder out Bid'daum.
How dare you! Do you have any idea who we are? Roared Razeth.
That is enough, Razeth! Clearly Bid'daum does not know about us or anything else, Minanth responded gently yet sternly.
Minanth is right, Razeth. We should give Bid'daum a chance, Galzra said.
Maybe one of us should take him on as a student, said Peddrenth.
Yes, however, not one of us has the time to teach him, said the black dragon Igneel.
What about Soreth?
What about him, Galzra? Responded Peddrenth.
He could teach Bid'daum.
What say you Soreth? Asked Peddrenth.
I would be happy to, Peddrenth, said Soreth.
Thank you, Soreth. You are demised.
Let us be on our way, Bid'daum, Soreth said.
What was that about, Soreth? Bid'daum asked once in the sky and away from the five mighty dragons.
You have much to learn, Bid'daum. Besides being the leaders; they are also the oldest dragons among us and younger dragons come to them for wisdom. They are not use to being question.
Bid'daum blink. What in the heck did he get himself into? How was he going to get the leaders of the dragons to end this war if they would not listen? He missed Eragon and their long talks at least the elves seemed to be reasonable.
The end of the chapter! Please review!
