Chapter: 16
Oh my gosh...it's been forever huh? Sorry but I've gone through a lot of crap over the past few months. Some anxiety, depression, graduation~, all that good stuff XD. Although it hasn't been all bad, it's just I wasn't really motivated to write this story aaand I really wanted to try and finish my other story before I started college and weellll...that's not gunna happen~. Anywho, hope you like the knew chapter! and sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes. I suck at proof reading~. Reviewing and favoriting is appreciated! ^-^
As the men and I headed back towards everyone, my stomach dropped. That low rumbling wasn't just some thunder, or a handful of titans…no it was much worse.
But how can this be possible!? Titans don't migrate this way at this time of year…unless they changed their patterns while I was away…this is bad…REALLY REALLY BAD.
Landing back on the ground, I thanked God that Levi hadn't checked on me yet.
"Great…what do I do?...And Kiwi must have heard it by now—"
"CATORI!"
Quickly whipping my head up, I saw Roy running up towards me.
"THANK GOODNESS YOU'RE OK! I HEARD THAT YOU WERE ATTACKED BY THE FEMALE TITAN. ARE YOU HURT?! YOU LOOK PALE!"
"Roy slow down. I'm fine," I mumbled putting on a fake smile.
At the moment I'm far from it. And by the looks of it Kiwi is too.
Looking past Roy's shoulder I saw Kiwi jogging up with a terrified look on her face.
She must know.
"What's wrong?"
"Hmm?" I hummed looking back at Roy.
"Somethings wrong. I can tell by the look on your face."
Biting my lip, I really didn't know what to say.
"Roy I need you to gather up our team. We're gunna be moving now."
"What?"
"You'll see," I said before jogging off to find Levi and Erwin.
"Catori wait! What are you talk—"
"Do as I say Roy!" I yelled out not wanting to waste any more time.
I still wasn't feeling too well so I was unable to run. Thankfully Levi and Erwin were not far away. They seemed to notice my presence and turned to face me. Aaaand Levi didn't seem too happy that I was up and about.
"Go sit in one of the carriages. We're heading back," Levi stated with crossed arms.
Oh gosh—oh geez! W-what do I say?! I mean if I say what I have to say they're gunna think I'm crazy…and it's gunna take a lot of explaining and I don't even know if this is gunna work!...well looks like I'm gunna be winging this. Like usual.
Ignoring Levi's comment, I looked up at Erwin, "Erwin we have a problem."
His expression hardened and his eye brows furrowed, "What is it?"
"There's a mass of titans heading this way."
"How do you know?"
"I can hear them. There's a lot."
"Then we have to head back immediately."
"No Erwin, we won't make it! They'll come too fast! We probably won't come back with even a forth of our soldiers."
Erwin could tell by the fear in my eyes that I wasn't joking around…and that I was hiding something else as well.
"What are you trying to say Catori?"
"I know a place we can hide. All of us. The village I lived in had an underground base in this area and it's not too far from here."
"Underground base?" Erwin questioned with a raised eyebrow.
"Yes!" I exasperated not wanted to waste any more time. "Listen we don't have much time! I'll explain when we get there!"
"And who said we're going?" Levi said.
"Why not?" I practically whined in distress, getting more nervous by the second.
"Because clearly there's entirely something else going on. And there's no underground base or city in this area of the walls. I would know."
"Well I guess you don't know, because there is! NOW IF WE DON'T LEAVE NOW, A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GOING TO DIE! Please, you have to trust me."
I could tell that they were questioning whether or not to believe me, based on recent events. After I survived getting eaten, I could tell they knew I was hiding something, and this whole situation, reeked suspicion. I mean how would I know that if we didn't leave now, that we couldn't just evade them…but that's now how it works….when there's a heard, it's massive….it's nothing like they've ever seen. It comes quick and fast, and can last for hours.
"Commander?" I pleaded wanting an answer.
I didn't get one. He gave Levi a glance as though having a silent conversation.
What? Do they think I'm leading them into some sort of trap…then again we were attacked by one of our own today, who ended up being a shifter…wait…they don't think I'm one?...do they?
Upon this realization…I snapped.
"So that's why…..You guys really think I would betray you all? After all we've been through?!"
"Catori calm down—"
"NO! If you believed me, we would have already left! Who would ponder to leave an area that a mass of titans is going to storm through!? ONLY SOMEONE WHO THINKS IT'S A LIE!"
"You need to calm down," Levi hissed.
"Me? I need to calm down? How am I supposed to calm down when the very person who I RISKED MY LIFE FOR, thinks I'm a part of—," I said motioning to the forest, referring to the female titan, "—WHATEVER THAT WAS?! THAT FEMALE TITAN TRIED TO KILL ME..."
Tears streaming from my eyes, I looked down at me feet.
"After everything….you don't believe me?...Levi….I thought…."
Looking back up at Levi, I stared him dead in the eye.
"You really think I would do that to you?" I gasped, my voice above a whisper.
My heart was heavy. They really thought I was someone capable of this?
"You really think I could do this? Do you really think I could do this to my friends?...my family? THAT'S WHAT YOU THINK OF ME?!" I growled.
Levi's eyes slightly widened, but his expression stayed cool and collected. His turned his head up towards Erwin as though mentally telling him something.
"You're positive they are heading this way?" Erwin asked looking me in the eye.
"YES SIR!"
"Then we leave now."
"What?" I asked as Erwin started to walk away.
Walking a couple feet from us, Erwin took a strong stance, "ATTENTION!"
Everyone's gaze flew to Erwin at his powerful voice.
"I've been informed that a massive amount of titans are coming this way. So many, that fleeing would be impossible to avoid them. Thankfully there is an underground base in this area that can accommodate us all. Right Catori?" He called out towards me.
"YES SIR!" I shouted, giving a salute.
"We are to follow squad leader Catori to this location. WE MOVE OUT NOW."
Everyone went scrambling to get the rest of the things loaded and getting mounted on their horse.
Running over towards my horse, I quickly swung myself on and headed towards the front of the group. Sure enough that's where my team was.
"What's going on?" Roy asked as soon as I came into sight. "What's this base you're talking about? Can it really hold us all? And how do you know that many titans are coming? Surely we can—"
"Roy," I hissed, trotting my horse in front of his, "I'll explain when we get there."
Taking a glance towards Kiwi, she even seemed confused by the situation, but so was I. The titans should not be coming this way, at this time of year….but that doesn't matter now.
****10 minute time skip*****
Quickly ridding down the grassy terrain, we were getting close to the base. It's been a long time since I've been there, but I still remember where it is. And the further we rode out the more familiar the surroundings looked.
Despite being pretty confident that I could find it, I was sweating bullets. Anything can go wrong at this point. What if the base had caved in? What if I actually can't find it? What would happen once we get there? Would we get there in time?!
The booming's getting louder. The titans are still a ways away, but they're by no means far.
Steering to the right, I led the group into a patch of trees.
It's here somewhere…..but which tree?...
I pulled the reins on my horse and came to a slow trot.
"Are we here?" I heard Erwin shout out from the back.
"Yeah, I just have to find the right tree!" I called back.
Darting my eyes right and left I looked for a huge Maple tree. It's gigantic and has a very thick trunk, but so far there was no sign of it.
"She better not have put us on a wild goose chase," Levi mumbled to Erwin.
Whipping my head back I shot him a glare, "I heard that. But if you'd be so kind to help, look for a large Maple tree. That's what marks where the base is."
"There's a crap ton of trees here. You expect us to find the right maple tree when there's thousands of them?" Levi deadpanned.
"Believe me you'll know it when you'll see it."
Making my way farther into the forest, I took a slight left.
Yeah….this looks familiar….WAIT I KNOW THAT OAK TREE!
Quickly ridding farther ahead, I took a curved right past the oak tree and upon seeing a sassafras tree I swerved left.
"Squad leader wait!" Roy called out, trying to catch up with me.
"We're almost there! Just a few more trees!"
"What?"
Oak, sassafras, oak, sassafras. That's how you found your way. How could I forget?!...I guess that's what happens in 3 years.
Passing up another oak, all I had to do was find one more sassafras.
There it is!
I quickly galloped up to the sassafras tree and slowed back down to a trot.
"SQUAD LEADER CATORI WAIT! YOU'RE GOING TO FAST IN ALL THESE—….whoa…"
Roy trotted up next to me and gapped at the big tree before us.
"It's even bigger than I remember," I whispered.
Quickly dismounting my horse, I ran up to the tree.
"Kiwi, help me find the opening!"
"Coming!"
Running up to me, she started to examine the tree as well.
"It should be on the right side…but where's the marking?...it should be around here somewhere…"
Sliding my hand across the trunk I was waiting to feel an indentation. I just needed to find two little grooves. As I inched my hand upwards I felt a small dip in the wood, and sure enough I had found the pad.
"I found it!" I exclaimed gleefully informing Kiwi.
Putting my thumb in one hole and my four fingers in the other larger hole, I started to turn my hand clockwise. There was a loud creaking sound and a low rumbling. The rest of the squad that started arriving didn't seem too keen on the noises.
Moving my hand away from the pad, it continued to rotate.
It should only take a few more seconds for the hatch to open.
"Alright everyone, stand back," I warned, motioning everyone to move away from the front of the tree.
I could feel Levi and Erwin eyeballing me, still not so sure on whether to trust me or not, but there's not time to worry about that now. Despite the hatch having a really large opening, there were still a lot of people to fit in…and we really didn't have much time left. Soon enough, the front patch of grass in front of the tree started to rise….and as expected, it startled a lot of people.
"S-squad leader Catori, what—"
"Alright, do you hear that?!" I yelled out so everyone could hear. "That low rumbling? Well that rumbling's not from the tree anymore, it's from the titans that are coming this way. So I suggest we start loading everyone down there and then you can panic and or scream from the patch of grass."
Walking up to the tree, Kiwi followed me down into the abysmal hole.
"There's plenty of room to load up the horses and carriages," I said turning around, informing Erwin.
"This platform is also used to take in cargo, so just put the first load of carriages and horses onto this platform and I can take them down. It would take about 4 trips."
Erwin stepped down to my level and peered further down into the black descending tunnel. The tunnel went down at a slant and it was cut out pretty well, but all that it was made out of was dirt. The metal platform we were standing on though was connected to a track and that track led down the tunnel.
"How does this platform move?" Erwin questioned.
Jogging down the side of the platform I pointed to the side of the dirt wall.
"This lever."
He eyed me once more before calling back up, "Load as much as you can onto this platform."
Erwin stepped off the platform and headed back up, probably to direct who's going to get on.
Looking at me with wide eyes, Kiwi sharply whispered, "What do you think they're gunna ask us when we get down there?! I mean it's a whole little town—"
"I don't know. All I know, is that we have to make sure everyone is safe…We'll deal with the rest later. Just let me do the talking."
"But it hate this…" she continued as horses and carriages stated to quickly file on.
Pulling her to the side, so no one would hear, gave her warm smile.
"I know…me too. But there's nothing we can do. They can't know."
"Everything's loaded on!" Erwin called from above.
Peering past Kiwi's head, I saw a mass of carriages and people on horses.
Man Erwin really packed it tight. At this rate, it will only take 2 trips. I just hope the platform can hold us.
"Alright!"
Reaching over towards the lever, I pulled it down. The whole platform suddenly jolted forward, causing some people to shout, but it started descended smoothly. The lower and lower we went, the more my stomach turned. To be completely honest, I'm putting my sister and I at risk here…but I don't have a choice.
"Catori?"
Turning my head up to the side, I saw Roy.
"Are you sure this is safe?" he stuttered, looking back at the black abyss before us.
Giving a stern nod, I gave my usual cheeky smile.
"Of course. I'd never put you in danger Roy. All we need are a few lights and we're good to go."
My words seemed to have comforted him and he continued to peer ahead with curiosity.
At least someone believes me.
With a heavy clank and a small jolt, we reached the bottom. Ahead, the enormous tunnel continued, but of course instead of leading downwards, it just leads straight ahead.
"Ok everybody off. And stay right here. I'll be back down in a second," I said as all the horses and carriages loaded off the platform.
Turning towards my younger sibling, I saw she looked a little calmer than earlier.
"Do ya think you can show them where the torches are on the wall? I think it'd calm their nerves to have some light down here."
She nodded her head, "Yeah, I can do that."
"Ok then, I'll be right back. Oh and pull the lever for me will ya?"
Giving another nod, Kiwi stepped off the platform and pulled down the lever. As the platform started to ascend, my mind started to race again.
Kiwi's right ya know…they're gunna be asking questions. And what am I gunna say? If I just make up a bunch of lies, I'll have to dance around them. I mean, are they really gunna believe that this is just an underground base that no one knew about? This platform right here proves that this is from a whole other world. If this was an underground city that they didn't know about, it definitely would be too old to have this kind of tech—
"Catori, are you going to take us down?"
Quickly looking up I saw Erwin was looking down at me with a raised brow.
"O-oh yeah. Sorry."
After pulling down the lever once more, we were moving again.
"I must say, this is quite a large tunnel. It's pretty hard to believe that no one was aware of this place."
I really didn't know if he was in awe or suspicious…probably a little bit of both, but mainly suspicious. The minute that it took to reach the bottom was one of the longest minutes of my life. Thankfully, there was light illuminating from the bottom floor, so Kiwi and the others must have lit the torches.
"We decided to only light the first few. We took the others so we can have them when we walk down the tunnel. Is that alright commander?" Roy said, turning towards Erwin.
"Yes, it will save time," he replied with a nod of his head.
"Well where do we go now, brat?" I heard a too all familiar voice drawl.
"Just follow me, hun bun."
Taking a torch from Roy I mounted my horse.
"You can't really get lost down here. Up ahead there's just a fork. One side leads to the base, the other leads to a supply area. We'll be going to the left."
Pulling on my reigns, I began to lead the group down the shady tunnel. To be honest, being down here, brought back memories of home. It gave me that "homey" feeling again. I've personally only been to this base once, but it is similar to home all the same.
Thankfully this place is a lot smaller than home, so it didn't' take long to reach where it divided.
"Keep to the left everyone," I called back.
Taking a glance back, everything seemed to be going swell. The faces on the soldiers seemed a lot less tense and although the rest of the group was a good 30-50 feet behind me, they probably just wanted me to go first just in case this was some sort of trap. Figures. But nothing has went wrong so far….
"Catori is that you!? What are you doing here?"
My eyes went wide at the figure before me. In the dim light, a dark outline of pointed ears and a flicking tail met my eyes. I dropped my torch.
OH YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.
As my horse came to a halt I gaped at the person before me. My breath quivered as it escaped my throat.
"O-ohanko?" I gasped, running my hand up my head.
"Long time no see. Now get down here so I can hug you."
Jumping off my horse, I pushed him back behind a rock.
"W-what are you doing here?! You can't be here!"
"Hello to you too," he said pulling me into a hug. "It's really good to see you."
Pushing myself out of the hug I started to panic, "Ohan, you don't understand. You need to hide. NOW.—"
"Well I can hide all you want, but you got a lot of people waiting for you down there."
Freezing for a moment, I swallowed the lump in my throat.
"What?"
I've been able to get myself out of sticky situations, no problem….but it seemed the father I got into this, the deeper my grave became.
"Kiwi, stall them." I said running my hands through my hair.
"But uh Catori—"
"Just do it Kiwi!" I severely whispered, turning my face to meet hers.
But her eyes were not the only ones I met.
"Who is this?" Levi questioned, eyes narrowed.
"H-him? I don't know him. I've never seen this guy in my life," I convincingly played off.
"Hey I—"
Harshly stomping on Ohanko's foot, I silenced him.
"Are those…" Levi said squinting his eyes, taking a closer look at Ohanko.
Oh no.
You see Ohanko is not the most ordinary looking character. Actually he's anything but normal. He's a hybrid. A feline hybrid more like. Levi's eyes widened as he saw Kinan's perked cat like ears and fluffy tail. To be honest I think he thought he was hallucinating.
As I looked back at Ohanko with wide eyes, I saw he quickly retracted his ears and tail.
"Are they what?" Ohanko innocently asked.
Well at least he can sense a mood.
"Catori," Erwin warned.
"W-what I-I've never….he's…"
At this point, there was no lie that I could tell to get me out of this. I mean there's this random guy just standing here and now they can't go directly to the base because evidently my people are there.
"Yeah, I mean I've never seen this cutie in my life—"
"Just SHUT UP Ohan!" I growled, smacking his arm.
Sighing, I bit my lip so hard I was surprised it didn't bleed. I held my head low and had to force my mouth to form words.
"Ohanko this is everyone," I said motioning to a now big group of survey corps members, who started showing up.
"And everyone…this is Ohanko…you can call him Ohan or whatever…."
"Catori, what is going on here?" Erwin coldly stated, looking down at me with eyes cold has ice.
"I….he's my friend…."
"Now Catori," Erwins dark voice echoed through the tunnel.
"I-I-I…I mean…to be honest it's a long story…pretty much he's a guy from my village."
I was speechless. What was I supposed to say? "Oh yeah Erwin did I forget to mention that pretty much all my background story that you know is a lie."….well not all of it I guess but…there's a lot he doesn't know.
"Listen…either you follow me or not, because at the end of this I know I have a lot of explaining to do, so I'm screwed either way! I can promise your safety, whether you stay in this tunnel or follow me down to the main base. It's your choice."
After all this time…I'm finally going to see them again, but…what will they say? What will they think?...What will—
"Listen here brat," Levi hissed grabbing onto the front of my shirt. "I don't want any more lies. What is going on?"
"Don't hurt her!"
Glancing to the side, I saw Roy had jumped off his horse and was running up towards us.
"Get back to your horse cadet."
"With all due respect sir, I can't. I have to stand by my squad leader," he stated reaching over to grasp my flaccid hand. "I've been with Catori for 3 years now. And she's never did me wrong. She's always been a person I could turn too. Someone who showed me I could still feel happiness in this dark war.….she's risked her life for me…and for you. I trust her…and so should you."
Levi indifferently stared at Roy as his grip my shirt weakened. He appeared to be in deep thought, but his eyes soon snapped open at the rumbling of the tunnel. Small clumps of dirt were falling from the ceiling and hard pounding could be heard from up above. It sounded like a never ending avalanche.
"Is that..?" Levi asked, looking up at the top of the tunnel.
"Yes. It's the titans."
Pushing his hand away, I huffed a sigh.
"See I told you I wasn't lying. Now let's just get a move on before you get a bunch of dirt on that bleached cravat of yours."
Before I could walk away to mount my horse, I felt a hand tug on my wrist. Pulling me closer to his face, I could practically taste Levi's soapy sent.
"Understand, and understand well. If you pull anything...you'll regret it."
I know that everyone is just scared and confused, but the look he gave me, well to be honest it hurt. He really was willing to…well seriously hurt me at least.
"Whoa harsh," Ohanko breathed. "You're not serious are you?"
"Ohan, what did I say?" I sneered, turning towards him.
"Well if he is, I'm not gunna let him—"
"Ohan not now! He's not gunna kill me because I'm not gunna pull anything. See problem solved!"
Slowly walking up to my horse, I mounted it. I glanced down to see Roy looking up at me. I knew that Roy trusted me with his life, but…I knew that there was still some doubt in his eyes.
"Thanks Roy. I won't let you down."
Holding my hand out to Ohanko, I rolled my eyes "Get on."
"As you say~."
Jumping on my horse, he positioned himself behind me.
"How far to the base," Erwin asked as I started to slowly move past him.
"Not far at all."
The slow trot down to the main part of the base was absolutely unbearable. I knew Kiwi was probably sweating bullets by now, knowing what was up ahead, but we have no choice. We're in too deep now and turning back is no longer an option.
"This…is it," muttered as we came up to big thick wooden doors.
They reached all the way to the top of the tunnel and all the way to the dirt floor. There were intricate engravings of vines, leaves, tree's, flowers, and wild animals. I turned back to see how everyone was keeping up, and they all were in awe.
"This is the entrance?" Erwin asked, trotting up beside me.
"Yes sir. It is…but…I suggest that I enter first."
Giving me a nod, I dismounted my horse.
"Uhhhh Catori," Ohanko nervously drawled as his voice lowered into a whisper, "Are you crazy?"
"Yeah…pretty much."
Running my hands across the wooden door, I pushed in the two flowers at the bottom, and reached up to twist the flying bird to the side. I had to wipe my face every so often from the puffs of dirt that were falling from up above. Before finishing the last piece of the puzzle, I looked back at everyone.
"Prepare to be amazed."
Resting my hand on a fallen Oak leaf, I gently pushed it in. A loud rumbling echoed over the titans booming, and the ground hummed in vibration. Slowly the wooden doors cracked open. A blinding light, shinned through the door into the dark lit tunnel. I squinted my eyes as they began to water. Vigorously blinking, I slowly started to walk through the opening door. My eyes didn't even need to adjust for me to be overwhelmed with old memories.
I'm….I'm really here.
"Everyone, welcome to Ehu, my home."
Everyone gradually made their way in, putting their hands up from the light. Down below was an enormous utopia. There were a variety of sized wooden homes to be seen, with trees scattered all around. A swirly river, paved its way, weaving around the houses and buildings like a snake. A huge totem pole was standing proudly in the center. Some small teepees could be seen, with smoke rolling out from the tops. Glass lanterns lined all-around the walls and hung from tree branches that were creating a canopy over the enormous ceiling. It was almost like a modern Native American utopia.
I took in deep breath as familiar scents were pungent in the air. They were the smells of home. A smile crept to my face and my body started to shake from happiness. Home always seemed like a distant memory, as if it was a dream. Like some alternate life I lived that was far from the truth. After living through hell in this war, I've forgotten where my happiness was rooted from. I've forgotten how much I missed home…the place where war and destruction, where nothing but a myth.
"This is your home?" Roy asked walking up towards me, eyes wide in shock.
I felt a hand grasp mine, and squeeze it tight.
"It's our home," Kiwi said excitement laced in her voice.
"This place is magnificent," Haji gapsed, eyes darting all around.
As more people started to file in, I knew I needed a game plan. I couldn't just waltz back here after 3 years with humans.
"I thought this place was abandoned," Erwin said with concern.
Sighing I looked up at him, "I thought so too."
"So why isn't it?"
"Ok first, leave the horses and carriages outside the doors. I have to talk to the people about you guys staying here. Just stay behind these trees for now," I said, trying to plan this out as safely as possible.
"So you just expect us to sit here while someone could ambush us?" Levi's monotone voice cut in.
"Listen, I didn't know there would be anyone here and right now I don't have time to explain! You're just gunna have to trust me unless you wanna go back to the surface while a bunch of titans are gunna be prancing around for the next 5 hours."
No one seemed to object, so I took it as a good sign. They also seemed too preoccupied with gawking at the place. They've always lived in the walls and this was something that none of them have ever seen before….but curiosity can also be a bad thing. I don't need them wondering off and having someone spot them.
"Kiwi stay with them. That way you can hear if anyone comes by or you can move them to a safe spot oooor something….gosh I don't know. But don't worry, you guys will be just fine. My people aren't as violent as you guys are."
Before I could turn to walk away, Erwin had one last question.
"And who is this leader of yours?"
"The chief."
"And that is?"
"….my grandfather."
Not looking back I scampered down the hill, into a patch of trees.
Not only do I have to deal with explaining this ordeal to them…but I have to deal with my own family. And the question is, what will they say?
As I reached the end of the patch of trees, I came to a halt.
If I'm going to make it to the chief's council room, I need to blend in.
It's been around 3 years since I've walked around in my true form. When I first came to the survey corps, once in a while, I'd give myself the privilege to pop out my ears and tail. It was a way I was able to remind myself what I was doing there. What my mission was and who I was really was.
Taking in a deep breathe I concentrated on extracting them. They've been in my body for 3 years, so it's more of a challenge to get them out than it used to be. After a few seconds, it felt like they were extracted. Feeling around behind me, I found my tail to be intact. As I reached above me head I found to familiar perky ears.
"Man I missed you little guys," I happily sighed, running my hands across my silky ears.
There was no time to celebrate though. I had to get a move on before someone notices a lot of foreigners, hiding in the trees.
Standing up, I slipped out of the trees and craned my head down. People could possibly still recognize me and I don't need that at the moment. Briskly walking to the Council room, I could feel the cold sweat on my back.
Well this should be an interesting family reunion.
There's a lot of information to take in huh? Yuuup we're finally getting into what Catori is and where's she's from~. The next chapter should clear a lot of things up, but for now I had to end it somewhere~. I also made the chapter longer because of my long absence. As usual any comments or suggestions are always welcome! I love hearing what you guys think! C U in the next update!

tannerpies: Hope you liked her transformation! It's nothing too different from how she is, but I guess being a hybrid isn't too normal either XD
