Lab – Devil Is a Girl

Chapter 34

One Big Happy Family

New Orleans, 1820

I sat on a sofa, carelessly observing the celebrating people. They were chatting and laughing, enjoying their appetizers and drinks. The governor's mansion was almost as luxurious as ours and we were always the guests of honor in his parties. Or at least Klaus, papa and Rebekah were, the governor didn't seem to know of what to make of me. Still he had never dared to treat me disrespectfully, he was smarter than that. Well, if a person who had made a deal with the devil, so to speak, could be called smart.

In exchange for a remarkable amount of money, he had welcomed us to his town, knowing perfectly well what we were. We were allowed to do pretty much anything, someone always cleaned up the mess and there were never any consequences. Personally I couldn't understand what kind of person would sacrifice his own people for money, but as Klaus had said, greed was a funny thing.

I had asked Klaus why had he made that deal with the governor when he could have simply compelled him, but according to Klaus, this was much more fun, to see how far people were willing to go for more wealth and power. Klaus enjoyed revealing the most wretched sides of people, basically whenever he killed someone, their blood was on the governor's hands. He thought that was simply hilarious.

It seemed that he had become in some way worse along the years; papa often rolled his eyes and said that there was no hope for Klaus. I didn't think that, I had seen the bitterness deep inside of him when we had drunk together during the full moon. A part of him had hoped that things would somehow be different in this new world, but nothing had changed, he still couldn't have what he so desperately wanted.

In fact, things were worse here, all his unwanted memories seemed to haunt him. Papa had told me that they had lived here a long time ago when they had still been humans, so this new world really wasn't new for them. Of course everything had changed since they had last been here, but Klaus couldn't get over his disappointment.

At least he had found ways to entertain himself, I saw him standing next to the wall with two beautiful women who were almost rubbing themselves against him. Papa was dancing with Celeste, a witch who he had spent a lot of time with lately. They were both smiling; I had to fight against the sting of jealousy. Celeste was a nice woman and she had always been kind towards me, but a part of me was still jealous. I knew I was being selfish, clearly she made papa happy, but I couldn't help it.

Rebekah was dancing with the governor's son, Emil, they were smiling as well. Even though I wanted them to be happy and I had more or less got used to my own loneliness, it was still sometimes difficult for me to see everyone else having what I could never have. I sighed and noticed the governor looking at me from across the room. I gave him a polite smile and a nod. He replied with an awful fake smile and turned to look at the young man who was standing next to him, I recognized him as the governor's nephew, Abel. He had lived with his uncle ever since his parents had died few years ago, he really, really didn't like us. I was bored, so I concentrated on listening to their conversation.

"The young lady is sitting by herself," the governor said. "Go and ask her to dance."

Abel looked like the governor would have just ordered him to chop off his arm.

"But uncle, I do not want to touch those things…"

"Watch your tongue," the governor snapped. "You will ask her to dance right now."

"Yes, uncle," Abel murmured gloomily. He looked like a pouting child when he reluctantly approached me and bowed.

"May I have this dance, mademoiselle?"

I could have just let the poor boy off the hook, but I didn't appreciate being called a thing, so I gave him my sweetest smile and stood up.

"Why, thank you, sir, I would be delighted to dance with you."

He looked even gloomier, but he tried to force a smile on his face.

"How wonderful…"

It seemed that he had to brace himself before he managed to take my hand, clearly my touch repulsed him.

"My, you have a cold hand, mademoiselle," he muttered.

"I apologize," I replied sweetly. "Perhaps I need someone to…warm me up."

His utterly shocked expression almost made me laugh, sometimes I enjoyed shocking people. Even though he knew that I wasn't a human, I doubted that he had still expected that from a little girl. His mouth floundered open and closed, he couldn't get a word out. I waited patiently until he managed to pull himself together enough in order to lead me to the dance floor. I was feeling a bit wicked, so I pressed myself against him when the music started, he was absolutely horrified. My eyes met Klaus', he was dancing with one of his ladies and he gave me a grin.

"May I cut in?" he asked.

"Yes!" Abel cried out and stepped back as fast as he could.

"Aww…" I said innocently and blinked my eyes. "What a pity, we were just getting to know each other. Perhaps we shall continue later."

Abel didn't say anything, he looked very pale. Klaus bit his bottom lip and lifted me up; he liked me to be in the same level with him when we danced. Well, technically he danced and held me in his arms, but I didn't mind, it wasn't much fun to dance when your partner was much taller than you.

"My, my, someone is naughty this evening," Klaus chuckled.

I shrugged.

"I was bored, you and papa have been too busy to even dance with me."

Klaus rolled his eyes when he glanced at papa and Celeste; they were still completely concentrated on each other.

"Yes, Elijah seems to be very fond of his little witch."

"She makes him happy," I muttered, trying to sound casual. "He deserves that."

"You hate her," Klaus stated.

"What, no," I said immediately. "I don't hate her, I just…"

I had no idea what I tried to say, so I thought it was best not to say anything. I didn't want to admit that I was jealous.

"I understand, sweetheart," Klaus said, he sounded a bit amused. "Elijah has given all his attention to you for a long time."

I lowered my head, I felt ridiculous. I was the one who kept complaining to everyone that I wasn't a child, but what else was this than acting up of a child who didn't like to share her father's attention. I was a 316-years-old for heaven's sake. Things would have probably been different if I would have looked like an adult and have a companion of my own, I wouldn't have been so attached to papa.

"You think I am pathetic," I muttered.

Klaus shook his head.

"No, I do not. I think Elijah is lucky for having someone who loves him so deeply."

His words surprised me; I looked up and saw in his eyes that he meant what he said.

"Thank you," I said and smiled at him. "You know I love you too."

He grinned and kissed my cheek.

"Yes, you are not the only one."

He gazed at his ladies and winked at them; they were smiling like idiots and staring at him like he would be a gourmet dinner. I rolled my eyes.

"This is really what you fancy?" I snorted.

"Why not?" he replied grinning. "Perhaps they are not very…intelligent, but they have other nice qualities, if you know what I mean."

Unfortunately I did and it didn't make me feel much better. Sensitivity really wasn't his strength.

"Hey, you know you will always be the one who I take home with me," he joked and raised my hand to his lips. "My lady."

"We shall see about that," I said smiling. "I am not that kind of girl."

"That is what they all say," he teased and placed me on the floor. "Now if you will excuse me, love, I need to take care of few unfinished things."

"Sure, go before they start to drool on the floor," I huffed. Men… I walked back to the sofa and sat down. It didn't take long when Emil approached me, he was smiling politely.

"Good evening," he said smiling. "May I sit?"

"Of course," I replied. "This is your home."

I looked around, but Rebekah was nowhere to be seen, I couldn't imagine what her lover wanted, I hadn't really talked with him before.

"Thank you," he said and sat down next to me. "I wanted to take this opportunity to have a word with you, if that is alright."

"Sure… Where is Rebekah?"

"Your aunt needed to fresh up, she will be back soon," Emil explained smiling. "You have probably noticed that we have spent a lot of time together."

"Yes," I replied, I had no idea where he was going with this.

"Your aunt has told me how important you are to her," he continued and leaned towards me. "That means that you are important to me as well and I want you to know that I am not trying to take your aunt from you or replace your father, I only want to be your friend. Is that alright, darling?"

I stared at him disbelievingly; he really was talking to me like I would be a small child.

"What?"

"I love your aunt very much," he explained calmly. "I promise to take care of you both and I will love you like you would be my own."

I had no idea if I should laugh or cry, was this really happening?

"Listen…" I started, but Rebekah's arrival interrupted me.

"Emil! There you are."

"Hello, darling," he said smiling. "I was just having a nice conversation with your lovely niece."

Rebekah looked at me and raised her eyebrows.

"Oh? What did you two talk about?"

"We are friends now," Emil replied and tapped my head before I managed to say anything. I had to really control myself for not to bite his hand. Rebekah seemed delighted; I didn't want to ruin that, although I honestly needed to tell her to explain to Emil that I wasn't a child.

"I am glad to hear that," Rebekah said and leaned down to kiss my cheek. "I want my darlings to like each other."

"Absolutely," Emil said and kissed my other cheek. "I will love this lovely little lady as much as I love you."

Rebekah smiled and gave him a passionate kiss; I really started to feel uncomfortable.

"I will see you later, sweetie," Rebekah said and pulled Emil towards the dance floor with her. It took me a moment to recover, this was a great party. I really needed a drink.
