Sonata Arctica – No Dream Can Heal a Broken Heart

Chapter 45

Uninvited

I was in a deep sleep, when I suddenly felt someone grabbing my arm. That made me to wake up; the first thing I realized was that I was being yanked off the bed. Despite of my exhaustion, I acted immediately, my fangs were out no more than a second later.

"Get your filthy hands off my girl!"

The familiar voice froze me; I was too shocked to react when he pressed me against his chest and wrapped his arms possessively around me.

"It's alright, Eva," he muttered and snuggled his face in my hair. "I'm here now."

"What the hell?" Damon's sleepy voice muttered. "Get your hands off her."

Kol was growling furiously and tightened his embrace, like he would have been protecting me.

"You are dead," Kol snarled. "Do you hear me you sick bastard, I will rip your heart out and make you eat it…"

"No!" I shouted, his words brought my voice back. "You will not touch him!"

"It's alright, darling," he said and tapped my head. "Let me handle this."

That was the last straw, who the hell did he think he was? I wasn't shocked anymore, I was apoplectic. With an angry growl I attacked him, sinking my fangs into his arm. The surprise made him to loosen his grip; I jumped on the floor and glared at him furiously. Kol looked stunned.

"Darling?"

"I am not your darling," I snarled. From the corner of my eye I saw that Damon managed to get to his feet, although he was still drunk. "Stay behind me," I said without turning my eyes away from Kol. His eyebrows furrowed.

"What is this? Where are Elijah and the others?"

I felt a nasty sting, but I managed to hide it.

"I have no idea," I replied coolly. "I haven't seen them for a while."

"What?"

Kol stared at me disbelievingly, his eyes darkened when he turned his gaze to Damon. "Who the hell is this?"

I clenched my fists in rage and took a step towards him.

"That's none of your business," I snapped. "Get out; you're not welcome here."

His eyes widened.

"Eva, it's me…"

"I know who you are!" I shouted, I couldn't control myself any longer. "You're the bastard who broke my heart and abandoned me because I wasn't what you wanted me to be!"

"No, Eva, it wasn't…"

I ignored his attempts to explain himself, I was just getting started. This had been bottled up inside me for centuries and I couldn't stop the words from coming out.

"Do you have any idea how it felt knowing that you were willing to abandon your whole family just so you wouldn't have to see me! What kind of a person says that he loves someone, but leaves because this someone doesn't look like he would want her to! You made me believe that I'm not good enough for anyone and now you come to my home and act like you would own me! How dare you, Kol Mikaelson, how dare you!"

I was so angry that I was shaking; a long silence followed my outburst. Kol's face was completely blank, I had no idea what he was thinking and I couldn't have cared less. I hadn't realized how much bitterness I felt towards him before I had seen him. His behavior certainly hadn't helped.

"Eva…" he started quietly. "I believe we should have this conversation in private."

"And I believe you should leave," I replied coldly. "I have nothing else to say to you."

His expression tensed and I was ready for a fight, but surprisingly he simply turned around and walked out. I couldn't move, my whole body was shaking. Tears were coursing down my cheeks and loud sobs started to escape my throat.

"Hey, Eva," Damon muttered and touched my shoulder. I turned around and wrapped my arms tightly around him; he lifted me up and tried clumsily to comfort me.

"It's alright," he muttered and tapped my back. He sat down on the bed and placed me onto his lap, I tried to stop crying, but I couldn't. He stroked my hair and waited patiently for me to calm down.

"So…" he started after I wasn't crying anymore, my head was still leaning on his shoulder. "That was…?"

"Someone from my past," I replied quietly.

"Right… Was he…were you two… No, actually never mind, it's none of my business."

It wasn't difficult to tell what he wanted to ask, he was wondering had Kol and I been lovers. Obviously the thought confused him, we had never talked about it, but I was sure that he assumed I had no love life. How could I when I looked like a child. Slowly I started to realize that my outburst could have some serious consequences. I didn't think that Kol would hurt me, but Damon… I swallowed and forced myself to calm down.

"Listen," I said and pulled away. "I…I need to be honest with you."

Damon looked confused.

"About what?"

"You can be in danger, Kol… He…"

"Don't worry about that," Damon said confidently. "I think I can handle your former boyfriend."

I shook my head.

"No, you can't. He's… a very old vampire, much older than me. I need you to promise that you won't go anywhere alone, not before I have talked with him. I need to make sure that he won't hurt you."

"What if he tries to hurt you?" Damon argued.

I couldn't help but smile, his concern warmed my heart.

"I don't think that he would, we… Things have been complicated between us, but we have a long history."

"Well, no offence, but he seemed like an asshole to me," Damon huffed.

I stared at him for few seconds before bursting into laughter, I couldn't help it. Laughing felt nice after all the crying; Kol didn't deserve any more of my tears. Now I just needed to make sure that he wouldn't kill Damon.

1 week later

"Which one do you want?" I asked.

"The brunette," Damon replied, I wasn't really surprised, he really liked brunettes. This one was very beautiful; she was wearing a blue evening gown. The hall was full of celebrating people; the mayor's ball seemed to be a success. Damon and I hadn't been invited, but we liked to crash nice parties sometimes. I had figured that we both deserved a break after staying alert the whole week. There had been no sight of Kol, but I had still followed Damon like a shadow, just in case. I knew Kol well enough for not to think that he would have simply forgotten the whole thing. Perhaps I should have handled things differently, but my feelings had gotten the best of me.

"Alright, the brunette it is," I said and started to make my way among the crowd. I was wearing a creamy evening gown; it was one of my favorites. The brunette seemed a little lost, she kept looking around her. I stopped in front of her and used my "poor helpless child" look.

"Excuse me," I said shyly.

She looked down and smiled at me.

"Oh, hello."

I blinked my eyes coyly.

"Could you help me, miss, I can't find my brother."

"Yes, of course," she replied. "Don't worry, we will find him together."

"Thank you," I said smiling. "You are very kind."

"I am happy to help, sweetheart. My name is Sarah."

"Eva."

"That's a beautiful name," she said and took my hand. "What does your brother look like?"

"He is tall and handsome," I replied shyly. "He has dark hair and blue eyes, just like mine."

"Are your parents here?"

I shook my head.

"No, our parents are dead. He looks after me."

"Oh, I am so sorry."

Damon was quite clumsy with the opposite sex; he usually needed a little help to get started. He didn't feel comfortable lying to the women and he certainly never used compulsion, I thought that was cute. He had been 25 when he had become a vampire, but my guess was that he wasn't very experienced as far as women were concerned. Perhaps that had made him an easier target to this Katherine, who obviously had manipulated him.

"There he is," I said and waved at Damon.

"Eva, there you are," he said. "You should know better than wander off like that."

"I'm sorry," I said. "I met this nice lady."

"Hi, I'm Sarah," the brunette said smiling; obviously she liked what she was seeing.

Damon took her hand and kissed it, just like I had taught him to do.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, I'm Damon. Thank you for looking after my little sister."

"Oh, it was nothing," she replied, she was twirling her hair around her finger.

Damon didn't say anything; apparently he was too nervous to continue. Come on, the woman was obviously interested.

"So, you are her guardian?" the brunette asked after an uncomfortable silence.

"Yes," Damon muttered.

"I think that is wonderful, not many young men would take such a responsibility."

"Yes…"

Apparently Damon was suddenly very interested in his shoes, I had to do something or neither of us would get lucky tonight.

"I love my brother," I said and wrapped my arms around him. "He is the kindest brother there is."

He smiled and tapped my head.

"Thank you, sweetheart. Would you like to dance, Miss Sarah?"

"I would love to," she replied.

"Don't go too far," Damon said to me before leading the brunette to the dance floor. He seemed much more confident now, he had a potential to become quite a charmer. I was so concentrated on looking at him that I didn't notice Kol before he was standing next to me.

"Good evening," he said casually. "Nice party."

It took a moment before I managed to reply.

"We need to talk."

"Yes, I agree," he stated. "Outside."

I nodded and followed him to the glass doors that led to the garden. The mayor had a nice garden, but I didn't pay any attention to that. The night sky was full of stars; I glanced at them briefly before facing Kol. He had crossed his arms over his chest and he wasn't looking at me.

"About what happened…" he started rigidly. "When I saw… I thought…"

"Damon and I aren't lovers," I interrupted him. "Not that it's any of your business."

"I know," he muttered. "I don't blame you for being mad at me."

"Good to know," I huffed. "You can be damn sure that I'm mad at you."

He was quiet for a moment; he was biting his bottom lip.

"Eva… I need you to know that I never wanted to abandon you."

"You still did," I replied coolly. "That was your choice."

"Yes, I know I made wrong choices, but…"

"Look, what happened, happened," I sighed. "There's no point tearing all the old wounds open. I only have one request for you and if you ever cared about me at all, you will give me what I ask."

"Yes, of course. What is it?"

I moved in front of him and took his hand; that made him finally to look at me.

"I want your word that you won't hurt Damon, he has done nothing except been my friend when I really needed one."

Kol's eyes narrowed, he didn't look pleased at all.

"Give me your word," I demanded.

"Fine," he muttered through clenched teeth. "But you will never sleep in his bed again. I mean it; I will kill him if you do."

"You have no right to give me orders!" I snapped and shoved him. "You have no idea what I've been through!"

"Tell me," he demanded. "What happened between you and my siblings?"

"It doesn't matter," I muttered. "They are better off without me."

"I don't believe that, not for a second."

I turned my back on him and marched further away from the mayor's mansion, I needed a moment to gather my thoughts. He followed me, but he didn't say anything. Finally I stopped and turned to look at him.

"I found out what happened to Owen," I said tensely. "So I left. When I came back, 5 months later, they were all…having fun; all my things were gone, like I would have never existed. Does it sound to you that they missed me?"

Kol frowned; he was just about to speak when we both sensed that something was wrong. The next thing I noticed was the pain; some kind of piece of cloth had been thrown over me. It was a net, I could smell the vervain, it burned me all over. I screamed, trying desperately to get the net off me, but another net was thrown over me and someone yanked it, making me to fall down.

"Get the girl!" someone shouted. "Kill the man!"
