Eve 6 – Think Twice

Chapter 48

Homecoming

I closed my eyes before someone entered the room; I pretended that I was unconscious. Despite of the pain, hunger and exhaustion, the fear helped me to concentrate. I forced myself to lie still when I heard the footsteps approaching the bed. Then I couldn't hear anything, this person didn't make a sound. He was staring at me, I could feel it. I had never been so afraid in my life, but I wasn't going to give up without a fight. If he was a human, I could have a slight chance to fight him off, but if he was a vampire…

The helplessness filled me with desperation, this couldn't be happening, not to me. I had killed many predators that harmed children, but I had never before been afraid for some of them hurting me. The thought almost made me tremble, I was about to panic. Yes, I had dreamt of experiencing some intimacy, but definitely not like this, not with some sick bastard against my will. No, that wouldn't happen, I would rather die.

The silence seemed to last forever, what was he waiting for? I flinched when he suddenly touched my cheek, I needed to act now. Maybe I couldn't get my fangs out, but that didn't stop me from biting. I used all the strength I had left and grabbed his hand before sinking my teeth into it. He cried out in surprise and yanked his hand away; I was too weak to stop him.

"Eva?"

I barely heard him calling my name, I was shouting furiously.

"Don't you dare to touch me! I'll kill you!"

I couldn't move, but I tried to struggle when he grabbed my shoulders.

"Eva! Eva, it's me!"

I blinked my eyes few times in order to clear my vision, even though I had already recognized his voice.

"Klaus…"

He was looking down at me smiling; his fingers touched my hair when he sat down next to me.

"My Eva…"

I was so relieved that I started to sob, my whole body was shaking.

"Hey…What's wrong, sweetheart?"

I couldn't stop crying, but I managed to get one word out. "Hungry."

He looked confused and picked me up, but his touch hurt so much that I cried out in pain.

"Eva…" he muttered. "What's wrong?"

I looked at him with tearful eyes and tried to reach for his wrist.

"Please… I need to feed."

His eyes widened, gently he placed me onto his lap and bit his wrist.

"Here, sweetheart."

I grabbed his wrist with both hands and drank greedily, I was starving. He stroked my hair while I fed, but I barely noticed that. Finally he pulled his wrist away and pressed me against his chest. I allowed him to do that and wrap his arms around me; I needed a moment to recover. He sighed and sniffed my hair.

"My Eva…"

Slowly my mind started to comprehend what had happened, he had sent people to hunt me down and bring me to him caged like an animal. How dared he?

"You," I growled and freed myself from his embrace. My eyes were flaming in rage when I glared at him. "Why? Do you hate me so much that you wanted to humiliate me for fun?"

He looked stunned. "What?"

I jumped to the floor and revealed my fangs.

"You bastard!" I shouted. "Did you think it was funny to order people to capture me with vervain nets and bring me here in a cage? Did you enjoy my suffering?"

His face went blank.

"What? Marcellus!"

I was still glaring at Klaus when Marcellus walked in.

"Yes?"

"Where are those bounty hunters?" Klaus snarled.

Marcellus raised his eyebrows.

"They left."

"What kind of orders did you give them?"

"To find her at any cost and bring her here alive," Marcellus replied cautiously. "Just like you said."

Klaus' eyes darkened.

"I never said anything about hurting her!"

Marcellus didn't say anything, but he seemed a bit nervous.

"Everything alright, flea?" he muttered and glanced at me.

"No," I replied coldly. "Far from it. I'm leaving."

I marched towards the door, but Klaus zoomed in front of me.

"Out of my way," I growled. "Or do you want to hurt me some more?"

"I didn't tell anyone to hurt you," he replied firmly. "I needed to find you."

"Why?" I snapped.

He pressed his lips together.

"Marcellus, leave us. And bring me the heads of those bounty hunters."

I snorted; did he really think that would fix everything? Hardly.

"Don't bother," I huffed. "They were just following someone's orders."

I crossed my arms and glared at Klaus, he waited until Marcellus had left.

"Eva," he sighed. "I really am sorry."

"Why am I here?" I asked icily.

His expression tensed, he had never liked people challenging him. Not many people were foolish enough to do that, but I was, I wasn't afraid of him. On the contrary, I was angry as hell, who did he think he was?

"Careful, Eva," he stated matching my tone. "As I said, I apologize the way you were brought here, but you were the one who ran away and forced me to spend years looking for you."

I stared at him disbelievingly.

"Years? It took you less than 5 months to get rid of all my belongings, why would you try to find me?"

"What?" he muttered. "How do you…" He paused and pressed his lips together. "You were here."

"Yes," I replied coolly. "I came back in order to talk about…what happened and I saw with my own eyes how much you and papa missed me."

Klaus was quiet for a while, his face was completely callous.

"Elijah turned his humanity off," he finally said.

"What?" I gasped, I couldn't believe my ears. "How…"

"It happened after you left," Klaus continued. "Not a pretty sight."

I was too shocked to say anything, what had I done? This was all my fault, I had failed papa.

"Where is he?" I asked desperately. "I need to go to him."

Klaus was looking at me strangely, he seemed almost angry.

"All I got was acting up, but as soon as you heard Elijah's name you are ready to run to him like nothing would have happened."

He couldn't be serious.

"Where is papa?" I asked tensely. "Tell me."

His eyes narrowed.

"You know what, Eva, I doubt that you really understand how privileged you are. If anyone else would have done what you did, there would have been some very unpleasant consequences."

"Being locked up in the cage wasn't unpleasant?" I snapped.

"You left me!" he shouted. "No one does that! Do you hear me, no one!"

The magnitude of his emotions surprised me, he was gritting his teeth and his hands were shaking. I had really hurt him. The thought was somehow confusing; I wasn't sure how to handle it. We were both quiet for a long while before I touched his hand and wrapped my arms carefully around him. He lifted me up and held me tightly, like he would have never wanted to let go.

"You are mine, Eva," he muttered. "Whatever will happen, you are mine."

I didn't have time to say anything when the door flew open. I turned my head and saw Kol standing in the doorway, he looked furious.

"Hello, brother," he snarled and zoomed in front of Klaus, but he didn't attack before yanking me off Klaus' arms and placing me on the floor. No more than a second later they were at each other's throats growling like animals.

"Hey!" I shouted. "Stop it!"

Neither of them was listening to me, so I gave up and went to the kitchen to get a bucket of cold water. The house looked just like I remembered, Klaus hadn't changed much. On my way back I ran into Marcellus, he had probably heard the racket and was on his way to see what was going on.

"I got this," I said. "You should probably stay here."

He raised his eyebrows, but didn't say anything. Klaus and Kol had managed to destroy most of the furniture and cracked one of the walls, now they were apparently trying to strangle each other.

"You son of a bitch!" Kol snarled. "I'll teach you to hurt my Eva!"

"You're the one who hurt her!" Klaus snapped. "And she's my Eva!"

I rolled my eyes and jumped on the bed, luckily they were almost next to it.

"Enough!" I shouted and threw cold water on them. Fortunately that made them stop, neither of them looked pleased.

"Now," I said when they seemed a little calmer. "Where's papa?"
