Chapter 51

The Perfect Disguise

New Orleans

"Please don't hurt me," I sobbed. "Please…"

"Shh, shh, quiet, little one," the man said and lifted me on the bed. The room was filthy; he had kept other girls here before me. Unfortunately for him, this time he had chosen a wrong girl. He picked up a doll lying on the table and handed it to me.

"Do you want to play, little one?" he purred and placed his hand on my knee.

"Definitely," I replied smiling sweetly.

"Me too," Kol's voice said from the door. The man almost jumped before turning around.

"What… Get out."

Kol's smile definitely wasn't sweet.

"Oh, I don't think so."

The man didn't seem to know what to do; clearly this was a new situation for him. It wasn't so much fun to deal with someone his own size for a change. He tried to back away when Klaus appeared next to Kol.

"Papa," I said innocently.

The man's eyes widened with terror.

"No, no, this isn't what you think, I… I found her and… I was going to take her home…"

"No, you weren't," I cut in. "You were planning to hurt me. What kind of a person would hurt a helpless child?"

I jumped to the floor while I spoke, the man continued backing away. He seemed confused when I approached him.

"You wanted to play with me?" I hummed and revealed my vampire face. "Let's play then."

He screamed when I sank my fangs into his neck, Klaus and Kol took his wrists and joined me. It didn't take long for three of us to drain him.

"Now that was fun," Klaus said grinning and picked me up. "I've missed hunting with you, sweetheart."

I licked my lips and smiled at him, I had missed this too. This was my first night out after I had returned to New Orleans, papa and Rebekah had been reluctant to let me out of their sight. I didn't want to hurt their feelings by pointing out that I had looked after myself for years, they didn't have to coddle me.

"Come here," Kol huffed and yanked me off Klaus' arms. I had warned them both to stop treating me like a doll, but apparently neither of them wanted to listen. At least they were getting along, just like old times back in England. The three of us were a great team, although I had no interest participating in the games they liked to play when they were out drinking. Killing random people just wasn't my thing; I liked to choose my victims carefully. The victims I killed that was, usually I didn't kill the people who I fed on. Perhaps I was a hypocrite, but I liked to think that papa had taught me at least some kind of moral.

"You are quite a little beast," Kol said smiling and touched my cheek. "Just like I remembered."

I smiled too; I couldn't deny that I had missed him. I still had a lot of issues to settle with him and with Klaus, but right now I just wanted to enjoy their company. Kol lifted me on his shoulder when we headed outside. The French Quarter was quiet in this hour, but the taverns were still open.

"Would the lady like to have a drink?" Kol asked.

"Sure," I replied. "I bet I can drink you two under the table…"

"Wait," Klaus suddenly said, he had stopped walking.

"What?" Kol asked, he was looking around vigilantly.

"I know you're there," Klaus snorted and crossed his arms. "Very subtle."

I frowned and was just about to ask who he was talking to when papa appeared in front of us.

"Honestly, Elijah?" Kol huffed. "You are following us?"

"I was concerned of Eva's safety," papa replied coolly.

"Her safety?" Klaus repeated disbelievingly. "You think we can't keep her safe?"

"No, you can't," Rebekah snapped, she had just appeared next to papa.

"Both of you?" Klaus snorted. "This is ridiculous; she doesn't need you to…"

"You have no right to tell me what she does or doesn't need," papa interrupted him icily. "Not after what you did."

"Not this again…"

"You think we would just forget," Rebekah snapped. "No, Nik, not this time. I don't care if you hurt me, I have got used to that, but no one hurts my baby."

"For heaven's sake, Rebekah, she's not a baby!" Klaus snapped back. "Just because you want her to be doesn't mean…"

"Stop it!" I demanded. "All of you!"

I paused and touched Kol's shoulder, silently asking him to place me on the ground. No one said anything, but everyone, except Kol, seemed tense.

"We all need to work this out," I said quietly. "Let's go home."

"Hey? Little girl? We're here."

I opened my eyes and blinked few times, the cabdriver had stopped the car. I hadn't fallen asleep, but I had allowed my body to rest during the long ride from the airport to this backwater known as Mystic Falls. I looked outside through the window and saw that the driver had parked the car in front of a bus station. Dr. Martin had promised to pick me up from here. I stretched my arms and started to look for one of my, or technically papa's, credit cards from my small handbag. It was very girly, or womanly, with an elegant rose print and a bow. My hair was up in a bun and I was wearing a short burgundy dress, a black sweater and my favorite black pumps. Just because I looked like a child, didn't mean that I would have to dress like one.

"Thank you," I said when the driver lifted my suitcase from the trunk.

"I should probably wait until someone picks you up," he muttered, he certainly didn't sound very thrilled.

"No need," I replied smiling. "I'm more than capable of looking after myself."

"Sure," he snorted. "I think I'll still wait…"

"You can go," I cut in, using compulsion. I had no patience to argue with him.

"Okay then…"

"Drive carefully."

I crossed my arms and waited impatiently after the cab had driven away. The flight had felt incredibly long, I hadn't been able to think about anything else than papa. I couldn't understand who could have daggered him. As far as I knew, no one except Klaus had those kinds of daggers. Unless… Mikael. I swallowed when I thought about my first and so far last meeting with him in that theatre in New Orleans all those years ago. I had managed to bite the bastard, but that had been only because I had surprised him. Without Klaus things would have no doubt turned out much nastier than they had. I looked up when I heard a car stopping in front of me.

"Eva," Dr. Martin greeted me while stepping out. "Thank you for coming."

"Of course," I replied.

He picked up my suitcase and lifted it to the trunk. Luka was sitting on the front seat so I climbed to the backseat.

"Hello," I greeted him.

"Hi," he muttered. He hadn't really known of what to make of me the last time I had seen him and apparently he still wasn't sure.

"Where's papa?" I asked as soon as Dr. Martin was inside. "Who daggered him?"

Dr. Martin hesitated for a brief moment before answering.

"There was a group of them, two vampires and some humans. One of them is a witch."

"Why did they dagger him?"

"I think you should ask him."

My eyebrows furrowed, but I wasn't going to argue about this, first I needed to save papa.

"Alright, please take me to him."

Dr. Martin nodded and started the car. We were all quiet; I was too tense to really concentrate on anything. The ride through the town didn't tell me anything I wouldn't have already known; obviously I had googled this place on my way here. Mystic Falls seemed to be just a typical small town, except for the unusually many "animal attacks" which had all occurred lately. Some vampires just couldn't clean up after themselves.

"How old are these vampires?" I asked after a long silence.

"I'm not completely sure, but younger than 200 years."

"Good," I huffed. My senses sharpened when we started to slow down, I saw a large house ahead.

"This is the place," Dr. Martin said. "Elijah is kept somewhere in that house. Right now the only people in there are the two vampires and a human girl, she's on vervain. She owns the house."

I bit my bottom lip.

"Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you know where papa is why haven't you done anything to rescue him?"

I could see through the rearview mirror that Dr. Martin looked a little uncomfortable.

"I… I thought this would be the safest way to rescue him, no one would ever suspect someone like you."

"True," I muttered. "I think I need to get changed."

"Get changed?"

"Yes. Please drive the car further away from the house."

Dr. Martin obeyed and went to get my suitcase. My mind was already formulating a plan; first I needed to be invited in. That shouldn't be too difficult. Dr. Martin and Luka waited outside when I opened my suitcase and picked up more suitable clothes. A pair of white jeans, a pink My Little Pony print shirt and pink sneakers. I even put my hair in pigtails. Perfect. Dr. Martin's eyes widened when I stepped outside.

"So," I said and spun around. "Would you invite me in?"

"I most definitely would," he muttered.

I smiled and winked at him.

"Alright then, wish me luck."

"Yes… Good luck. And don't kill the girl, Elijah needs her alive."

"Good to know," I muttered and marched determinedly towards the house; all my senses were scanning my surroundings. The place was huge, I needed to act fast if I wanted to find papa. He would definitely have some explaining to do, but first things first, I needed to save him. I placed my best "helpless and innocent" look on my face before timidly knocking the door. It didn't take long when it opened and I saw a pretty brunette. She must be the human.

"Hi," I said shyly and twirled my hair around my finger.

"Hi," she replied. She looked a little confused, but not suspicious. "Where did you come from?"

"Mommy sent me to get help," I explained. "Our car broke down and she had to stay with my baby sister. Can I please use your phone, miss?"

"Yes, yes, of course," she replied and took a step back. "Come in."

I suppressed my smile.

"Thank you very much."
