Chapter 59

How to catch a wolf

Tennessee, 1 month later

"Thank you," I said to a man who had been kind enough to offer me a ride, after a little compulsion. Not many people picked children up from the side of the road without asking any questions and I was in no mood to play any games. My only goal was to find Klaus, period. Yet I had to admit that perhaps my life had been too easy for the past decades, I haven't been by myself after leaving from New Orleans all those years ago. Sure I could have called Kol, but I was still angry at him. I could do this by myself.

The sleazy biker's bar in front of me looked everything but nice, but I marched in without hesitation. Hopefully this was the right place. It was, I could tell that immediately when I stepped inside. I could smell them. The place was almost full; there were plenty of big and intimidating looking guys and skanky looking women. At first no one paid attention to me, they were chatting, drinking and listening to the loud music. There were people playing pool and throwing darts, I tried to look for the source of the smell. The four loud guys playing pool. They were all tall, muscular and most definitely dangerous, it was clear that even the other people in the bar didn't go too near them. Bingo. Calmly I walked over to them; they were too occupied to notice me.

"What the fuck, Donny?" one of them snorted. "You cheated!"

"Who are you calling a cheater? I won fair and square, so pay up, bitch!"

"Make me…"

I had to clear my throat few times before they noticed me, clearly they were stunned.

"Good evening, gentlemen," I said politely. "Can I have a word with you?"

All four of them stared at me disbelievingly, like they would have never seen a child before. I was trying not to draw too much attention, so I was wearing a pair of jeans, a floral print sweater and sneakers. Usually I enjoyed wearing dresses, skirts, boots and pumps, but at the moment I needed to blend in or at least try to.

"What…" one of the men murmured. "Are you lost, cutie pie?"

"No, I'm not," I replied, forcing myself to stay calm. Honey, sweetie, sweetheart, cutie, girlie, shorty, silly-goose, huggy-buggy (yes, really), baby doll, bambina, little princess, those were just few of the "lovely" names I've been called during the last few weeks. Back home in California I had got used to be treated at least a little respectfully, but now when I was alone, there was no hope for that. Obviously I didn't mind papa calling me sweetheart or whatever he wanted to, but that certainly wasn't the same thing.

"I would like to ask you couple of questions."

The men stared at me for a moment before bursting into laughter.

"Aren't you adorable," one of them chuckled. "Who put you up to this? Was it Jimmy?"

"No, I'm here to ask you couple of questions."

"Go ahead, sweet pea," one of them said grinning.

"Alright, I'm looking for a man called Klaus."

None of the men were certainly laughing anymore; they looked more or less shocked. Good, obviously they knew who Klaus was.

"Who the fuck are you?" one of them snapped.

"My name is Eva," I replied politely and showed them a glimpse of my vampire face. That made them all to take a step back.

"Jesus!"

I suppressed an urge to roll my eyes and looked at the men calmly.

"Look, I don't want any trouble; I just want to find Klaus. Do you have any idea where he could be?"

"Get lost runty fanger," one of them snapped. "Your kind ain't welcome here."

"I respect that and I'll be more than happy to leave right after you tell me…"

"You think you can make demands? Guess again, shorty."

I pressed my lips together and struggled to control myself.

"There's no need to be rude, I haven't said anything about your appearance have I? And believe me; I could say more than one thing. Like for example, would it kill you to bathe more often than once a year?"

Okay, that hadn't been very smart, but I was sick of people mocking me. The men glared at me and formed a circle around me.

"You really don't want to do this," I stated calmly.

"Guess again, fanger. Your kinds are nothing but disgusting scum…"

He didn't have time to finish his sentence when I burst into tears. They couldn't say that I wouldn't have given them a chance to handle this sophistically. But then again, what could I expect from a werewolf biker gang.

"Help me!" I shouted. "Mommy, please help! The bad men are hurting me!"

Suddenly the bar was very quiet, everyone was looking at me. Perhaps these people weren't the upper class of the society, but they didn't hurt children.

"Shut up," one of the werewolves hissed. "She's kidding," he added.

I cried even harder and looked at the people in the bar.

"Please help me."

Most men and all the women stood up.

"Leave the kid alone," a huge tattooed guy snarled.

The werewolves were clearly outnumbered, but they were stronger than humans. Still it would be a close call.

"Last chance," I whispered. "Where's Klaus?"

One of the werewolves growled and grabbed me; I didn't try to stop him.

"Fine," I sighed. "Suit yourself. Mommy!"

That was enough to start a chaos. I had been in bar fights before with Kol and Klaus, but this was something new.

"Perverts!" some woman shouted while hitting one of the werewolves with a chair. There was hitting, kicking, scratching and biting, perhaps I had overdone this. In the middle of it all, I managed to grab one of the werewolves and drag him outside behind the bar. He growled furiously when I pinned him on the ground and picked up a small bottle out of my pocket.

"Guess what this is?" I asked calmly. "That's right, wolfsbane, so I suggest you start talking."

"Go to hell, you little fanger bitch!"

I sighed, why couldn't anything ever be easy? He did talk eventually, only to tell me that he didn't actually know anything. His little gang had heard about Klaus, the hybrid who was looking for werewolves, but they had no idea where he was. Another dead end. I was more than frustrated when I headed back to the road, planning to hitch a ride to the nearest hotel or motel. I needed to rest, take a shower and formulate a new plan. Life on the road wasn't much fun, I had become too lazy. I missed the home I had decorated for papa and me; I missed my room, my clothes, my books, Mrs. Mills, my blood popsicles and the pool boy. Yes, definitely the pool boy.

Most of all I missed my family, although I was angry as hell to most of them. I was angry at papa for keeping things from me, angry at Kol for trying to control me, angry at Damon for acting like an ill-mannered child, although he had reluctantly told me what he knew about Klaus and Stefan, which hadn't been much. I had left immediately after that, I hadn't wanted to hear any more mocking words from him. I had no idea if he had believed me when I had told him that we had known each other before.

Then there was Klaus. I had no idea what to think. A part of me refused to believe that he would have done something like that to Rebekah. I needed to find him and make him give papa back to me. I raised my thumb when I saw a car approaching, it was very likely that it would stop and then someone would ask me the same damn questions. Was I alright, what had happened, where my parents were and so on. Or then I would have to deal with some pervert who thought that this was his lucky day. Just the thought of it was giving me a headache; I needed to compel the driver quickly. As I had suspected, the car stopped and the door opened.

"Thank you for stopping," I said while climbing into the front seat next to the driver. "That was…."

"Hello, Eva."

I froze for few seconds before I managed to look up.

"Klaus…"
