"For you two I suppose..."

"Oh Dracey, let it go. I'm sure Vanice knows you just wanted to impress her, right?"

At Lydia's statement, we both went red. Crabbe and Goyle exchanged nervous looks and then scowled at Lydia, who was trying not to smile. I was wide eyed and looking down at my broom, to the clouds and to the ground, anywhere but Draco.

I could just feel the embarrassment, though I didn't have a right to be. It was just something Lydia had innocently, more like teasingly, said.

And for that, her and I had a lot of discussing to do.

"Of course not!" Draco began to stammer. "I don't need to impress a stupid girl, and I know for a fact she couldn't care less."

My head snapped up and I scowled at Draco, who seemed to have flinched at his words. From the corner of my eye, I saw Lydia slap her forehead and Crabbe close his eyes, while Goyle covered his ears.

"I mean, not that you're a stupid girl Vanice, but I'm just saying..." Draco rambled, looking around and looking lost.

I regained my composure slowly, trying not to get angry at one of my closest friends, keeping in mind that had in fact insulted a Crypton.

"I expect an apology then." I calmly said, sitting up straight on my broom.

"I...uh..."

"Oh my Merlin, you just called my best friend stupid, THE LEAST YOU COULD DO IS SAY SORRY, YOU TROLL." Lydia screamed, surprising all of us.

Draco made a face at Lydia and rolled his eyes.

"Be quiet Lydia." He mumbled, then turned to me. "Vanice, I apologize."

Before I could respond, he flew down, Crabbe and Goyle right behind him. Once they were on the ground, they all put their brooms in the shed and began to walk back to the mansion, not even looking back.

"Oh like whatever. Dracey always gets like that when he doesn't get his way, since that like never happens."

Stifling a smile, I motioned for us to start to fly down. She had a smirk on her face, I knew, and from the corner of my eye, the bracelet had turned a chestnut brown. The word CONFUSED was in swirls. That was a fact. I was thoroughly confused. Though I wasn't sure if I wanted to know the answer or not.

"So, like, let's go to my room." Lydia suggested, putting our brooms away and skipping back inside.

Nodding, I followed her, noting that her bedroom was in the east wing of the Mansion. And on the third floor. The staircase up was slightly different than the rest of the house, with a slight feminine touch. Not necessary bows and pink everywhere, but more details to the design in the wood and to the walls. There was still as much Slytherin and Serpance Pride, no doubt about it. Occasional paintings here and there, with flowers along the corners of the halls.

"Here we are! My like, lovely room."

We were in front of a large white oak door, and the handle was metal bow. I mentally prepared myself for the most Lydia-fied sight in the mansion. She opened the door, and my jaw opened wide.

The ceiling was white, as were the walls. She had a single window which was decorated with emerald green curtains, which made a giant bow at the top. Her bed was large, queen sized and fluffy white. It was against a wall opposite of the door, and besides the bed on the right was a large dresser with a fairly big mirror. On the pearly white dresser was all the makeup, hair products and nail polish you could find. She had a small bookshelf at least half the length of her dresser and on the wall were the window was, appeared a double doored opening.

As Lydia walked me in, she smiled and giggled, going over to a glass table in the middle of the room and picking out some Chocolate Frogs.

"That's like, my closet! We're about the same size, so whatever you need, feel like, free to wear it. Free of charge." She said, gesturing to the double doors, which gently opened, revealing a walk-in-closet.

I walked into the spacious closet to find clothes of all different styles packed from wall to wall. I scanned through my options and carefully selected a plain black sweater with lace sleeves.

Changing quickly I emerged from the closet to find Lydia toying with one of her many various beauty products.

"Hey." I said it almost abrasively as if her earlier comment had irked me, though not as if I couldn't be kidding.

"Hmmm?" She replied lightly, appearing dazed.

I plopped myself next to her on the fluffy bed. She tossed me a chocolate frog and I unwrapped it slowly.

Popping it into my mouth I let it partially melt in my mouth, pondering the best way to word my inquisitions.

"Why did you mess with Draco like that?" I asked.

"I didn't like, mess with him at all. Sometimes his ego just gets too big. Besides, it's not like it's not totally I true."

"Don't be stupid Lydia. It is not true. Well, the last part. Draco has no need to impress me, nor would I care if he did."

I kept my focus off of Lydia, following the complicated pattern that ran along her headboard.

"If you say so Vanice. Come on let's go find Dracey."

We once more descended the staircase and made our way to the dining room. Their elf was placing large silver platters filled with food along the thick mahogany table. Every one was present so I took my seat across from Draco. Even the plates and silverware seemed expensive, all delicately crafted and the end of each utensil brandishing a large 'M' for Malfoy. Even the napkins had been folded elaborately.

I began to fill my plate with slices of beef, piles of potatoes and peas and several other foods. I observed that Crabbe, Goyle and Draco had been having a whispered conversation.

Even now I sensed a thick awkward tension lingering between us; and over something so silly. Swallowing my food, I checked to make sure my parents were immersed in conversation. Confirming so, I subtlety grabbed a pea and launched it toward Draco.

He jumped up as it hit his cheek and his attention immediately went to me. I made no remark, only smirked a little. As he smiled back the tension between us melted.

I glanced in my parents direction to make sure they had not seen my previous actions, for such behavior from a Crypton would have appalled them, taking away privileges I had worked hard for. I finished my meal and waited patiently for my parents.

"Vanice?"

"Hm?"

"I uh, I am sorry though. I er, really don't think you're stupid, it's just uh-"

"Its okay. I'm not mad."

"Oh uh well.." I was sure this time that I saw a light flush spread across his cheeks.

"Come along Vanice, we're leaving."

I stood and followed them to the fireplace, holding Aletta's hand.

Right before I stepped into the fireplace, Lydia smothered me with another hug.

"See you at school." said Draco.

"Bye." I stepped into the ashes and was engulfed with green flame, whisking me away from Draco and back home

"You have your books?"

"Yes Mother."

"Your extra robes?"

"Yes Mother."

"Your wand?"

"Of course I do mum." I shoved my way through the Muggles and through the barrier, my mother and sister in close pursuit.

"Have a good term sweetheart." Mother said briefly, as I was about to hop aboard with my trunk, I felt Aletta wrap her tiny arms around my leg.

I patted her head and kissed her cheek goodbye as the train gave its last warning whistle then crawled aboard.

The majority of the school had went home so I had to search for some time to find Draco, Crabbe, Goyle and Lydia.

"I bet you that Potter had to stay at Hogwarts." Draco said to no one in particular.

Lydia was filing her nails and Crabbe and Goyle chuckled stupidly.

"Weasley too. Those blood traitors don't have the money to have him. Can you imagine the kinds of gifts they get?"

I stored my trunk above then took my seat next to Lydia.

"Granger too." He continued

"We wouldn't be so lucky Draco. Look."

I gestured across the hall to Granger, who had her nose buried in a book.

"Heh. How sad is that!" He laughed.

He continued his rant on Potter and his group and I occasionally threw in an agreement or opinion. When the cart came around Draco bought a mountain of sweets that we all consumed from a pile.

Finally around late afternoon the train began to slow, the castle now In view. I stood up, but as I did so the train came to an abrupt halt and I lost my balance.

I prepared myself to fall backwards but to my confusion I felt a cold hand grasp my own and steady me.

"Er..thanks." I responded to Draco, smoothing my hair and reminding myself it was a basic act of kindness.

"You're welcome."

I took a breath and gathered my stuff before exiting the compartment.

"You're like, totally blushing." whispered Lydia.

I then became aware of the fact my face felt warm.

"No I'm not. It must be a trick of the light." I replied cooly, despite my contradiction she kept her smirk and I increased my pace as I entered the castle door.
