Chapter 18: Betrayal

Dr. Weir reread the notes that Taylor, McKay and Zelenka had sent her. When she finished, she closed out the file, leaned back in her chair and placed her hands flat on her desk. The three researchers were trying to find out as much as they could about Ereshkigal and her connection to the Ancient that had put the chip in her head. There was still a lot of information to go through and it was taking some time because everything was in code.

All the secrets, especially dark secrets, which existed within the walls of Atlantis, were not easily discovered. It was as though fortified walls were protecting the secrets and when one wall had been broken down, there was another heavier, fortified wall.

The planet of feline-like people and their devotion to Ereshkigal caused knots to twist in her stomach. It looked as though they had run into situation like the Goa'uld all over again. Ereshkigal's physical strength and agility went beyond the Wraith, but the extent of her longevity and healing abilities hadn't been determined.

The threat that Ereshkigal had made caused several scenarios running through her head, each getting worse than the one before and it was causing her to worry about the people she led.

Ever since they came to the Pegasus galaxy, enemies came out of the woodwork like termites. It was her duty to protect her people that had come from Earth and those they had met in this galaxy that had become more than allies. They had become family.

She heard the alarm and then Chuck came over her comm. "Dr. Weir, we have a situation. A Wraith ship is headed toward the planet."

"I'll be right there," she replied, standing up from her chair and headed to the gate room.

When she entered the room, she saw her people analyzing the situation and talking rapidly. Her eyes went to the screen that showed the Wraith ship entering the planet's atmosphere.

Chuck didn't turn his head when she walked up to his station. "Ma'am, the shield is up and we've contacted the Athosians."

McKay and Ronon walked into the room and rushed over to her. "Dr. Weir, Colonel Sheppard has prepared a team to extract the Athosians from the mainland to bring them to the city," Ronon reported. She couldn't help but hear the disappointment in his voice. She knew that Ronon wanted to be out there fighting the Wraith, but Dr. Beckett still hadn't cleared him for duty yet.

"I can't believe the Wraith are attacking us now." McKay said with a frown.

She didn't respond knowing what was going through his mind and that the timing was a little suspicious as well especially since Ereshkigal had threatened them. If Ereshkigal had some sort of connection to this attack then Atlantis was in serious danger.

She stood in front of the screen that showed the Wraith ship flying only a few miles from the city. She watched the fighter jets that were trying to attack the Wraith ship without any real affect. It was too bad that they didn't have one of the Ancient's starships or one of Earth's ships around to help.

"The shield is down!" Yelled Chuck.

"What? How?" McKay asked his eyes wide.

Chuck only shook his head. "I'm trying to get it back up."

"The Wraith are attacking the Athosians," someone yelled from the other side of the room.

"We have a team in the air firing at the Wraith Darts and another team is protecting Atlantis but we need more firepower," said a woman with ebony hair.

Dr. Weir felt the blast from the Wraith Ship that struck the main tower.

"Use the city's weapons." She watched as Major Carson started directing the ZPM's power to the weapons. She held onto the railing before her as the city shook again.

She looked over at Ronon and McKay. Ronon stood leaning on his crutch with a fierce, angry look on his face while McKay was holding onto the railing with fear in his eyes.

Sheppard fired at the Wraith Dart and was finally able to get a direct hit that caused it to explode, killing the Wraith pilot inside. He looked down, knowing that he had to protect the Athosians. The timing of this attack was suspicious since Sky had threatened the people of Atlantis but he couldn't believe that she was involved.

He veered to the left just as a blast from one of the Darts came from behind. He maneuvered the ship as though he were dancing in the sky avoiding blast after blast. It was a few moments before Colonel Harper appeared and took down the Dart. Sheppard saluted him before went to circle around and head back towards the battle.

As he turned around, something silver caught his eye and he saw Sky standing on a cliff overlooking the city of Atlantis. The shock almost made him crash into a Wraith Dart but he was able to veer to the right, turn around and fire at the ship, destroying it.

He couldn't prevent the feeling of trouble that was beginning to grow in his gut. He had to land so he could reason with her and remind her that she was Sky, not some dark-goddess named Ereshkigal.

He saw her raise a baseball-sized object before her. He couldn't quite make out what the item was but it caused that feeling of trouble suddenly became an unfathomable feeling of doom. He saw the object glow.

The Wraith Queen screeched when a ball of energy struck her ship. It went through the shield blasting a large hole in the ship's side. The Queen sensed the deaths of several of her Wraith as she rose from her throne.

She ignored the alarms that went off, her anger focused intently on the screen that showed the one who dared to attack her.

Another blast struck the ship causing it to shudder as though it knew what was to come. The ship's starboard dipped causing the ship to twist downward.

She never should have trusted Ereshkigal and cursed her for the betrayal.

A blast struck the ship one more time causing it to explode. The Wraith Queen felt a burst of intense heat and then she didn't feel anything.

McKay and Ronon stared at the screen that showed the Wraith ship with a large hole in its side. "What was that?" McKay asked as ship took another hit.

A few seconds later, another blast struck the ship.

"The Wraith ship has been destroyed," Chuck said his eyes wide as he zoomed in on the flaming wreckage that had once been a ship.

"What? By who?" McKay asked.

"Not sure but the blast came from the mainland."

"We don't have any weapons on the mainland. Nothing that can do that anyway." McKay said his widened eyes meeting Elizabeth's frightened ones.

"Sky is here," Ronon said his eyes focused on the screen.

"You mean Ereshkigal," McKay corrected.

"There's a ship flying near the city."

"How come we didn't detect it?" Dr. Weir asked.

"It must have a cloaking device," Ronon said frowning as his eyebrows narrowed.

A blur swept into the room knocking out the soldiers that didn't even have time to react. The blur stopped in front of the group that was still watching the screen. Dark blue eyes looked up at them.

"Ereshkigal," Ronon spat as he reached for his weapon but she was suddenly next to him, grabbed his weapon, threw it across the room and then lifted him off his feet by his throat.

Everyone that remained conscious could only stare as she flung Ronan across the room causing him to hit the stargate and drop to the floor, his eyes closed.

McKay shook his head and ran at her, a mixture of fury and anger in his eyes, but she just swept him away with her arm, sending him into the wall. He could only watch as Ereshkigal turned to Dr. Weir and took a step towards her.

Ereshkigal threw a struggling Dr. Weir into a holding cell, told the closest Tirgrian to watch the prisoner and walked away.

She walked onto the bridge of the ship and sat down in a chair. She smiled because of the fear and confusion in the Tigrians.

"Eternal One," said a Tigrian that had black fur and large, daffodil colored eyes.

She stood in front of her chair, ignoring the Tigrian that had addressed her and looked at the screen that showed the wreckage of the Wraith ship. "It is time to return."

"What about the destruction of Atlantis?" Spoke the female Tigrian who was piloting the ship.

"You dare question me? I order you to return us to Tigria!"

The Tigrian bowed deeply, apologized profusely and turned the ship around. The ship rose into the atmosphere and left Lantea with the leader of Atlantis as its prisoner.
