CHAPTER 22
[The night before]
Quinn's POV:
"Quinn, do you have any plans tomorrow?" My dad asked me, without tearing away his sight from the steak he was slicing.
"I'm actually planning on staying home, why?"
"Do you remember Liam booker? Robin's son?" I know where this conversation is headed to. Normally, I would've accommodated his request but I have a lot on my mind right now. Especially now that I know Santana's against the idea of me going out on dates even if it doesn't mean anything to me.
"Dad…actually…" I'm thinking of a good reason that will not offend him, but then my mom butt in.
"Russel, you're just wasting your time." My mother remarked; she looked taken aback with what she just said, so it probably just slipped through her mouth.
That didn't stop my dad from being skeptical though. "What do you mean by that?" she asked my mother then looked at me directly, "I thought you had a crush on him when you were twelve?"
I was surprised that he remembered that fact about me, or that he remembered anything at all, because I thought he was too busy with working that those little petty things would slip from his mind by now. And I wish it just did, because now, it just became harder for me to disappoint him. Because his looking at me, with his teasing smile, that makes me feel like I'm twelve again.
"Dad…" I sighed. I didn't want to break his heart.
And I could see that my mom was having a hard time too. I could see that she doesn't want my dad to be mad at me. I almost forgot that just because she doesn't understand me, doesn't mean she doesn't love me.
She was looking at me now; it's been a while since she last did. I know that she can see the panic in my eyes, but she nodded encouragingly. She's probably tired of keeping secrets too.
"I'm in love with someone else, Dad." I said carefully, dreading for the next question to come.
"Really?" He said in slight surprise. "With whom?" he was enthusiastic, he is in a good mood and I hate how I'd destroy that with my answer.
"Santana Lopez." I answered looking down; it's not that I was ashamed with my answer; it's just that I hate to see his smile turn into a frown.
"That is not a very good joke, Quinn." He said without humor.
"I wasn't joking, Dad." I said, my voice trembling slightly.
"You knew about this?" I heard him ask my mom.
My mom probably nodded because my Dad slammed the table hard, almost making me jump in surprise.
"How long?" he asked. I wasn't sure whom he's asking. "How long have you known, Judy?"
"Does it matter? What she needs now, is guidance." My mother answered.
"I don't want that girl for you, Quinn." He said as if he hasn't made it obvious. "I don't like her for you."
I didn't question if it was because she was a girl because that would be beyond stupid. There's no point in asking.
"You don't need to like her, Dad. You just have to accept the fact that I do. I'm in love with her." There's no stopping now. They need to know the truth and they need to deal with that.
"I want you out of this house, now." He said with an authoritative tone, and he didn't have to say it again before I was out of his sight.
[Present]
Quinn had asked Santana to stay the night, and Santana find it ridiculous that she even need to be shy about it. Her parents were both in New York for a week; coincidentally they both have businesses to finish there.
They we're at Santana's bedroom, in Santana's bed, and for what seemed like forever to them, they're finally in each other's arms again.
"Quinn…" Santana wants to say something comforting, something that would make her feel better, but she don't think an 'I love you' can fix it this time. Somehow, they always end up in these kinds of situations; first, Quinn's mom, and now her dad.
The Latina wonders how her parents would react. Now that she thinks about it, she's surprised Judy hasn't told her parents yet, since they're long-time friends. Santana's betting it's because her husband doesn't know it yet, back then. Now that both Quinn's parents knew about them, surely, it's only a matter of time before they tell Santana's parents.
To be honest though, she's not that concerned. Her parents seemed to know; like it's some kind of an open secret between them. They seemed to know since her thing with Brittany back then. Her parents just haven't asked her directly. Her father is a doctor and her mother is a lawyer; they are smart people, they couldn't possibly think that Brittany and her were just friends back then.
"San?" said the blonde in a husky voice.
"Yeah?" the brunette answered, stopping from her train of thought.
"What were you thinking just now?" Quinn inquired; curiosity and concern laced her voice.
"Just things." Santana tried shrugging it off, at least for now.
"I know we haven't seen each other for a while, but I still know you. Something's bothering you, and I want you to know that you can tell me." Quinn said holding her girlfriend's hands.
"It's nothing." Santana said with a smile. "I just think that it's a good idea to introduce you properly to my parents, as my girlfriend." She confessed. And Santana didn't fail to notice the blonde's hands pull away slowly from hers.
Santana giggled and reached for Quinn's hand once again. "You'll be fine." She knows Quinn is nervous, but the brunette thinks she has no reason to. "They'll like you."
"You don't know that." Quinn stated. Quinn was sure her parents liked Santana but because they found out that they were dating, that liking flew out of the window immediately. But she had to remind herself that her parents are different from Santana's.
"They liked Brittany, I'm sure they'd like you too." Santana wished she didn't just say that. But it's too late to take it back now.
Quinn didn't say anything.
"What I meant was-" Santana tried to elaborate but she was interrupted.
"I know what you meant. It's fine. I get it." Santana wouldn't have noticed the annoyance in Quinn's voice if she didn't know her too well.
"Look, I'm sorry for bringing her up. What I'm saying is that you're the most beautiful person I know, it's impossible for them to not like you."
Quinn nuzzled up to the brunette. "I'm sorry. I'm just really tired." Quinn understands that Brittany and Santana go way back, but sometimes, sometimes she just can't help but get jealous.
Santana held her close as she was unconsciously playing with her hair with her free hand. "Maybe it's better if we sleep first. We'll talk about this tomorrow."
"Thank you." The blonde said, but Santana thought there's no need to. She was about to say something but Quinn kissed her in the lips that lasted for a second which stopped her from complaining.
Santana might never figure out what she did to deserve the girl beside her, but she's just glad she did it.
"So this is what it feels like, huh?" Quinn asked the brunette, chuckling.
Santana knew exactly what she meant. No secrets. The brunette never really officially came out, she just started dating girls, and she didn't care what the world thinks. It's her life after all. But of course with Quinn it's different. But now that 'kind of' both their parents know, their world is getting bigger, and hopefully it gets better too.
"What does it feels like?" But the Latina still asked for the benefit of it.
"Free." She said simply but the impact it brought the Latina was overwhelming.
"I'm happy for you, Q."
"I'm happy with you, S." she replied.
And Santana couldn't help but laugh at her cheesiness. "Me too, Quinn. Me too."
Quinn loved the sound of it: Santana's laughter. She kept replaying it in her head whenever they're apart.
Everything's going to be alright. They both thought.
Caleb wasn't lying when he said that they were going at The Brew. Caleb asked her to go out and since she didn't have better thing to do she agreed to it. She thought it would take her mind of a certain brunette but it been 20 minutes and she's all she could think about.
Hanna's POV:
"Hanna, you know that I don't mind talking as long as I know you're listening." Caleb said that cut me off my thoughts.
"What are you trying to pull off back there?" I didn't have to specify what I was referring to.
"So this is what it's all about." He said and sighed. "You're the one who didn't argue when she referred to this as a date." True. But he insinuated it.
"You know very well that I wasn't planning on approaching them." I pointed out instead.
"I know-"
"Plus, you placed your arm around me. What did you expect she would think?" I added. Yes, maybe I want to see some reaction from Emily. I want to see if she cares if I go on dates. But I don't want her to think that I'm trying to replace her that fast. Besides, I know how Emily gets when it comes to Caleb.
"Who cares what she thinks? You're not together anymore." He said, annoyance laced his voice, but he made an effort to hide it. "You shouldn't care." He whispered.
I didn't know what made me irritated, the fact that he's pointing it out or the fact that its true. Caleb saying it, made it feel more real though. We're not together anymore. And I hate it.
I stood up from my seat across him and headed to the exit but Caleb stopped me. "Don't." I looked at him and I was surprised to see that his eyes were pleading. "Please stay. Please. Just give me a chance." And I knew that we weren't just talking about staying anymore.
I shook my head, because I couldn't get myself to reject him verbally.
He released my hand but I stayed still at my place.
"Just listen to me. Please, let's go back to our seat." He requested, and I obliged.
"You can't expect me to get over her that fast, Caleb." I stated before anything else. I wanted to make that clear. "Right now, what I need is a friend."
"And, I know that. I'm willing to wait. But at least be with me, when you're with me. You're here, but your mind is always wandering and that's what I can't accept." He explained.
"I'm sorry." I apologized because really, he didn't deserve it. "But I need you to understand that I'm not looking for someone to love, we're not over until she says so."
"That's stupid." He didn't bother hide his annoyance now. "I can see it, Hanna. You always feel jealous when she's with your other friends and I think we both know why. I'd never make you feel jealous. I'd make you feel so loved that you wouldn't even think even once that I'd ever find someone better than you." He reached for my hand.
But I removed my hand from his grip. "This is not a good idea." I stood up once again and headed to the exit, this time he didn't stop me.
Just as I exited The Brew I saw Emily leaning on her car, she was already looking at me like she was expecting me.
I can't pretend that I didn't see her so I stayed glued to my place. "Hanna." She called out as she walked towards me.
"You're here." I stated.
"I'll drive you home." She said; it wasn't even an offer.
"There's no need for that." I didn't have to look behind me to know that it was Caleb. I cursed under my breath. "I'll drive her home." He added placing a hand on my waist. And of course Emily's eyes trailed at the gesture.
"Caleb." I warned him. But he didn't remove his hand.
"I need to talk to you." She said pretending that Caleb is non-existent. "We need to talk."
"We're on a date, Emily. I'm sure it can wait." Caleb said with conviction, and I noticed Emily's annoyance is growing by the second.
"Caleb, stop." I said, trying not to sound harsh. The last thing I want is to see them fighting on the streets.
"I'll wait for you in the car." Emily said, not waiting for my response and turned her heels towards her car.
"Don't tell me you're following her." Caleb said as if it's the most ridiculous thing to do.
"I'm not going to follow anyone." I said looking straight at his eyes. "But we do need to talk." I stated referring to Emily and I.
"Seriously?" he asked incredulously, "She's just keep on hurting you."
"You make it sound like she means it." I replied. I agree that I'm hurting, but it isn't anyone's fault. No one wanted this.
"Well, doesn't she?" he asked, his voice rising in frustration.
"We'll talk some other time." I said before turning my back on him.
I stayed silent when I entered Emily's car. Even her, isn't saying a word. I know she's still pissed with Caleb. She never really liked talking when she's pissed.
But I'm also irritated at her because she didn't send me a single text since our break-up. "I thought you were going to say something."
She let out a huff. "Are you really on a date with him?"
"Really? That's the first thing you're going to say?" I asked incredulously.
"You should've at least informed me." she said ignoring my question.
"What for? We're not together anymore." I said crossing my arms. Okay maybe that was a little harsh. I saw a glint of hurt in her expression from the rear view mirror and I suddenly felt guilty. "I'm sorry."
Her eyes stayed focus on the road. "Its okay." She simply answered.
I let out a sigh due to frustration. "I hate you." But we both know I didn't mean that.
"Welcome to the club." She retorted.
"If I would've known that you're going to be like this, I would've taken Caleb's offer to drive me home instead." I said in annoyance because she's making this communication thing hard for me.
Emily parked the car, she knew this conversation wouldn't go well and it would be a bad idea to keep driving.
"Why do you keep on bringing him up?" she questioned, her voice raised a bit, but she managed to control it.
"Because you're being like this." I answered.
"Just because we're not together doesn't mean I can't be jealous." I was taken aback at Emily's confession. She didn't like being vulnerable but she admitted it like it's the most obvious thing in the world.
"You never called. Not even a single text." She ought to know what I meant by it. I needed to hear her explanation.
"Because I thought you needed space." She explained. "Did you think it was easy for me not to talk to you? Every minute I have to remind myself that you need a break, so I stop myself. But seeing you with him is a deal-breaker."
"So you can have lunch with Aria, you can drive Spencer home, but I can't even have coffee with Caleb?" I have to let it out at some point. I know how to get jealous too.
"I wish you didn't break up with me. I never really agreed on it. Not even until now." She sighed. I was caught off guard by her hand touching mine. But I relaxed at it. I missed this. "I'm still in love with you."
I was about to say I love her too.
But she opened her mouth and I decided to listen.
"I love you. And I want you to be happy. And even though I don't like Caleb, if he can make you happy, then, I want you to go for it." I tried holding back the tears but I couldn't. This sounds like a break up to me. And the funny thing is that we're not even together.
"Why?" I struggled to say, because I feel like my throat dried up.
"I don't want to be selfish anymore. And even though you make it look like you're not, I know, I know that you're still waiting for me. And I thank you for that but, if ever you develop-"
I didn't even let her finish, I shook my head violently while crying, how can she be so calm about this? "We weren't on a date, Em." I clarified like it would change anything.
She chuckled weakly. "I missed that." She said in almost a whisper. "I always loved hearing my name from you." Just then did I realize that it's the first time I mentioned her name in front of her since our break-up.
She placed her hands on my cheeks, wiping my tears with her both thumb. I couldn't help but look at her brown eyes. Her eyes however were staring at my lips. She leaned forward closing the gap between us as I close my eyes. But I didn't feel her lips on mine; instead I felt a gentle pressure on my forehead.
After 5 seconds, not that I kept track, she pulled away. "I love you, Hanna. And even though you're right..." I furrowed my eyebrows not quite getting what she means. But when I looked at her eyes, I knew exactly what she meant. She likes her too. "I'm not going to give up on us just like that. I know I don't deserve you yet. But we'll get there. We'll work this out."
I held her hands that were still on my face. "I really hope so, because I'm undeniably in love with you. And I can't imagine this feeling going away."
I initiated the kiss this time, I sat on her lap facing her and I made sure that my lips would meet hers this time. My stomach flipped and my heart skipped when her tongue traced my lips.
She knew it. She was right. All she needed was a decent conversation with Emily, and she would throw the entire separation thing out the window just like that.
[Present]
Emily didn't know what yesterday meant. One thing she knows is that Hanna and her we're talking about how maybe breaking up was the right thing to do at the moment, and the next thing she knew, they we're breathless from kissing each other.
It felt good, there's no denying that. But they still have a lot to settle. There were still secrets left unsaid. And Spencer's text just supports her latter statement.
Spencer: I already told Aria. I'm sorry I didn't inform you before I did it. I don't know what came to me.
Guilt. It's what came over her of course. It's been nagging Emily ever since too.
She doesn't exactly know what to do so she went to Santana's house for advice.
Much to her surprise Quinn answered the door.
"Em." Quinn beamed a smile. She missed the taller brunette in front of her; she walked forward to hug her.
And of course, Emily hugged her back. "I missed you."
"I missed you too." Quinn replied.
Santana must've been curious what's taking Quinn a little too long answering the door so she followed.
"Em. You're here." Santana beamed. "On a Saturday morning." She added.
Emily laughed. "Look at you." Emily stated, "You have a girlfriend answering the door for you, how domestic." She remarked.
Both Santana and Quinn just smirked.
Santana opened the door wider, gesturing for them to enter. They settled on the couch in the living room. "I'm betting you haven't had coffee?" Santana guessed.
Emily smiled, enough for Santana to go make coffee for her in the kitchen, leaving Quinn and Em alone in the living room.
"You don't have any plans with Hanna today?" Quinn asked, oblivious about the current situation.
Emily smiled. "We're not-"
The change in Emily's demeanor was enough for Quinn to get the message. "I'm sorry. I didn't realize… I'm sorry to hear that."
"It's fine." The brunette gave her a reassuring smile. "You're here early by the way." She asked trying to change the topic. Her friends look happy today, she didn't want to ruin the mood by talking about her problems.
"My parents and I aren't exactly on good terms right now." Quinn answered with a smile looking down.
"Oh." Emily didn't know what to say since
Santana returned from the kitchen, before she could say anything else. "I know you haven't eaten anything so here." She placed the coffee and a bowl of cereal on the coffee table.
"Is this how you got Quinn to date you? Because I think this is effective." Emily joked.
"No, but this is her effect on me." The Latina said placing a kiss on Quinn's forehead that made the blonde smile, before sitting beside her.
Emily smiled at the two's affection for each other. She's genuinely happy for them.
"I'm betting you're not here to watch us publicly display our affection?" Santana said with humor.
"I just missed you, that's all." Emily reasoned lamely.
"Suuuure." Santana said sarcastically. "Come on, we have time. We don't have plans today anyways."
"Yeah, plus, I haven't heard any gossips from you guys for a long time. So spill." The blonde added.
"Well…" the two watched Emily in anticipation. "Spencer and I…" she paused not knowing how to continue because she didn't know if it's okay to Spencer if she tells their friends.
"Likes you?" Santana continued, making it easy for her friend.
The other brunette just nodded taken aback but not too surprised that Santana knows.
It just started and Quinn already thinks this is too much. She wasn't sure if they are referring to the same Spencer. She just realized how left out she is with news about her friends. It isn't helping that her girlfriend reacted like its ancient news.
"We kissed." Emily said in almost a whisper, but the silence in the Latina's house made it easy for them to hear it.
Quinn's eyes grew wider. She just didn't see it coming. This time Santana had the same reaction as hers.
"Is that the reason Hanna broke up with you?" Santana inquired, still absorbing the news she just heard.
"No." Emily answered, and the three of them didn't know if it was a good thing or a bad thing.
Emily told them the whole story from Toby kissing Toby up to what happened last night.
"You should tell her." Quinn said, referring to Hanna. "I mean, if it happened while you two were together." The blonde added. "She has the right to know."
"I know." The brunette sighed.
"You shouldn't have done that." Santana's not trying to judge but things just got bad to worse because of it. "You should've known better."
Emily kept quiet and looked down. "Do you like her too?" she heard the Latina ask. Spencer's beautiful. She's smart, she's kind…there's nothing to not like about her. And Emily's pretty sure she'd fall for the girl if she let her guard down, but she can't. She can't afford to love another person again. She just can't.
"It doesn't really matter." Emily reasoned. "Right now, my priority is Hanna and Aria. Aria's not replying to my texts because Spencer told her about it and she's mad at both of us. If that's Aria's reaction then I don't know what to expect with Hanna."
"You really messed up this time." Santana sighed. She didn't mean to be a downer but this is really some complicated shit.
"You're Emily Fields. You'll think of something." Quinn tried to assure her. She smiled at the blonde genuinely. Quinn has always seen the best in her, even after what she just said, and she's glad for it.
"I'm sorry." was all Emily said. She felt like she's the main reason their friendship is in havoc.
"This isn't anyone's fault." Santana said, taking a guess at what her friend meant. "Life's just a bitch at times." She said, followed by a slap at her arm.
"Ouch." She exclaimed. "What did you do that for?" the Latina asked her girlfriend.
"What did I tell you about profanities?" the blonde reprimanded.
"It's a female dog." Santana tried to reason.
"Yeah, because life is a female dog." The blonde said with her voice full of sarcasm.
Even for a minute, seeing her friends talk about something so non-sense, she felt like the old times again. She wishes it could be the same to all of them.
"Maybe we can have a mini reunion here at your house?" the blonde suggested that made Emily feel excited and scared at the same time.
"That's a pretty risky idea." Santana replied. She's betting there would be confrontations. It's almost impossible to not have one.
"Think about it. We haven't been complete in a long time. I know mostly it's because I'm not here. But I think it's worth a try. I just miss all of you guys. " she explained, trying hard with her puppy eyes to convince Santana.
"Don't look at me like that." Santana said, almost giving in, before she looked away.
"Em? What do you say?" Quinn asked the brunette, looking for some kind of help persuading Santana.
"This is Santana's House. Not mine." Emily replied, raising both her hands.
Quinn just pouted at the Latina.
It was enough for Santana to give in.
"It's settled then." Quinn stated. She didn't know what to expect either. But they're all about to find out.
It would be an eventful day, more than Emily expected; that's for sure.
So yeah, next chapter, there would be a little reunion...
I wonder what happens...I haven't started the next chapter yet.
But I bet that it would be fun writing it.
Thank you so much guys for reading! I hope this chapter isn't too bad.
I've read that a lot of you liked Emaria to be endgame.
And I'm really glad because of personal reasons. You can guess why. 3
Anyways, I'm still considering it, because I really ship Hannily too.
