Chapter Four

Link arrived on his horse at the entrance to the lost woods, the sounds of moaning and groaning inside. He dismounted, taking his sword out as he quietly moved towards the woods. He saw men laying about, cut and knocked out, and he knew right away, this was Rego's doing. He made his way through the bodies, and the blood. Claw marks covered the walls and floors, leading a pathway of destruction through the woods. He came to a room, where tables were thrown about, and men lay on the floor, one of them in much worse condition. He lay in a puddle of blood, his neck sliced open, a look of pure terror frozen forever on his face. Link covered his mouth in shock, looking around him. A small residue of smoke lay next to the body, and Link's eyes closed as he sighed. His breathing calmed, as he began to use the magic he had learned over the years, picking up Rego's trail, seeing it lead to Death Mountain.

"I can't believe he snapped." He walked out of the woods, and into Kokiri, where he sat, sighing. He looked out over the village, thinking back.

"And this, Rego," Link began, his green tunic blowing in the wind. "Is the New Deku Tree, which I helped grow after the first one died. Young Rego's eyes were filled with wonder as he looked at the huge tree.

"But daddy," Rego said. "What happened to the first one?" Link kneeled down next to his son, looking him in the eyes.

"A very bad man killed him, Rego. He poisoned him." Rego looked puzzled.

"But killing is bad, isn't it?" Link nodded.

"Yes, son. Killing is very bad. I had...to kill a lot of bad things, but I'm done with that now. I saved people, but I never liked killing the bad things. Now, this bad man...he killed good things. Lots of them. Like this tree. The Great Deku Tree raised me after my mother died, and he taught me about how killing was bad, and you should never do it." Rego smiled.

"I know my daddy is always right. I won't ever kill, daddy. Ever."

"I promise."

Link shook his head, and stroked his beard, snapping out of his memory. Tears in his eyes, he quickly snuck out of Kokiri, each house and gate and log, making him remember raising his son. He snuck out, and mounted his horse, trodding off to Death Mountain.

Rego sat in front of a small fire in the bottom of a canyon, his face blank. "I killed him." He said to himself. "How could I kill him?" He sat for hours, until the fire died out, the last of the coals burning slowly. He sighed, looking up to the sky. "Do I deserve it?" He asked.

"Of course you do." Said a voice from nowhere, as the fire blasted suddenly, roaring back to life. The voice was kind, and wise, but something about it seemed off.

"Who are you?! Where are you?" Rego asked, leaping up and extending his claws, looking around in shock.

"I am the one who gave you that, Rego." The voice said. The fire twisted and moved, a face forming in it.

"I gave you the Triforce of Power."

Rego hesitantly lowered his claws, looking into the fire. "Din? The Goddess of Power?" The face smiled.

"Rego, of course you deserve it. I chose you to have it for a reason." He scratched his head.

"...you already know, don't you?" He said into the fire.

"That you killed that man? The one who saw to it that Impa was murdered?" The voice said. "Yes, I know. I agree with what you did, except...that he deserved a slower death." Rego cocked his head.

"What're you...?"

"I'm saying that you possess the Triforce of Power. The man who used it before you killed millions, and you are to do the same. Kill the ones who would kill without this regret, Rego. If you leave the wolves unchained, they will go crazy. Take them out, or chain them up, and you could save millions. All it would take..." Rego shivered as the voice began to hiss.

"Is claiming that Triforce for your own." Rego's left hand began to burn, and he gasped as a glow began to emanate from his glove, a triangle appearing on it. Rego screamed in pain as it began to burn brighter, more painfully. The fire began to swirl out of control, and exploded, dissipating entirely. "It's your choice." It said, as Rego tripped backwards, falling hard on his head, passing out.
