After so many of his sleeping hours spent here, he has grown familiar with this place.
It's overwhelmingly claustrophobic, the well little more than a narrow shaft that stretches infinitely upward, the only light emanating from the sapphires below. They roll, tumbling over each other, rising to sparkle and shine before sinking again into the black water.
From his omnipotent view, Jaime watches and wishes he could scoop them up and spirit them away. Anxiety steals his heart every time one sinks beneath the lapping waves, the feeling washing away only when another surfaces, an ebb and flow that he follows behind his closed lids.
Over and over, night after night they churn, softly clinking together in a delicate but melodic song.
But tonight, the water is thick as oil, leaving behind a murky glaze that dims their inner light. He can only watch in mute horror as one by one
they sink
and fall
until finally
they
fail
to
rise.

12:18PM Jaime: And oh, look, a sentient hive-mind intelligence that uses colorful hypnotic lures and dissolves its prey. Doesn't exactly make for light lunch-break reading.
